Endometriosis: The Effects of Chinese herb Peony

Posted by Chantel Martiromo, Research article by Kyle J. Norton

During the last stage of the menstrual cycle, normally a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood, instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body to cause endometriosis. Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Peony are Chinese herbs that include white and red peony. While red peony is made by the whole peony root with its reddish thick outer bark, the white peony is made by the peeled root with the bark stripped off to reveal a powdery white to pink under-layer. It is said to help in strengthen the liver function(491)(492),in regulation of blood flow(493), and reducetion of menstrual cramps(494).

The effects
1. Reduce menstrual cramps
White peony reduces the period pain(494) through reduction the internal heat in the upper part of the body caused by Qi stagnation. By releasing the flow of the qi it also reduces the abdominal pain(491). Red peony helps to treat blood stagnation by increasing the blood flow to the abdomen(491).

2. Hormonal balancing
Since white peony helps to strengthen the liver qi(493)(494), it increases the secretion of bile into the digestive system that helps to inhibit the levels of bad estrogen(497) in the body which causes menstrual cramps and cell abnormality, such as cancer(498), endometrial implants, and adhesion(499)(500)(501).

3. Relaxing uterine muscle
With a strong liver, it helps to balance the prostaglandins hormones(496) by balancing the fatty acids in our body. Without the over-production of certain hormones in the prostaglandins family, there are no overactive uterine muscles(496) and menstrual cramps(494).

4. Immune system(490)(493)
Peony contains paeonin and paeoniflorin which help to strengthen the immune system in fighting against inflammation(495) that causes the endometrial implants and adhesion.

5. Nervous system(502)
By increasing the liver function(492) by stabilize the yin qi in the liver it helps the liver in protein and fat metabolism resulting in increasing the function of the nervous system thus reducing symptoms of dizziness, fatigue, irritation, memory loss, etc.(502)(503) in patient with or without endometriosis.

Endometriosis: The Effects of Chinese herb Licorice

Posted by Chantel Martiromo, Research article by Kyle J. Norton

During the last stage of the menstrual cycle, normally a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood, instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body to cause endometriosis. Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

The licorice plant is a legume and native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It has been used in treating women with endometriosis because of its isoflavones property.

The effects
1. Hormone balancing
Since it contains (Glabridin) isoflavones, it helps to regulate the estrogen and progesterone hormones by blocking the enzyme that breaks down progesterone. Because of its phytoestrogenic activity(479), it can also raise or lower the levels of estrogen(480) in the women body which is essential for women with endometriosis. Its Puerarin, may have the potential to treat endometriosis through suppression of the tissue invasion by endometriotic stromal cells (ESCs)(481).

2. Menstrual pain
Since licorice also helps in protein and fat metabolism by secreting the steroid hormones known to stimulate the production of androgen testosterone, it helps to balance the over-production of some members in the prostaglandins hormone that cause menstrual pain(482).

3. Nervous system(483)(484)
Licorice contains substances similar to adrenal cortical hormone which helps to increase function of adrenal glands. This helps to reduce tension of nervous system during distress(485).

4. Licorice and Immune system(486)
Licorice is also a powerful herb that has been proclaimed to help the liver in protein and fat metabolism resulting in enhancing the immune system(487) in fighting against forming of free radicals(488)(487) and endometrial implants and adhesion(488)(489).

Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Black haw is also known as black haw viburnum, or stag bush. It is a native to southeastern North America. The herb has been used in treating menstrual cramp and morning sickness for women with or without endometriosis.

The effects
1. Nervous system(470)
It is said that scopoletin(469) in the black haw helps in strengthening the nervous system by regulating the serotonin hormone, thereby it reduces the tension of nervous system and symptoms of endometriosis such as anxiety(471).

2. Immune system(472)
Black haw contains scopoletin, The substance is said to help immune system in fighting against bacteria, virus invasion, and forming of free redials including endometrial implants and adhesion(473).

3. Calming uterus contraction(474)
Black is said to have uterine sedative tonic containing salicin, the aspirin-like substance. It helps to relax the contraction of uterus during and after menstruation leading to reduce tension in the uterus and abdominal pain(475).

4. Uterus muscles(475)
Deficiency of bile caused by bile duct blockage increases the risk of imbalance of prostaglandins hormones(478) during menstrual cycle that leads to overactive uterine muscles resulting in menstrual pain(477) in the abdominal region(475). Black haw is said to help remove the blockage, thereby increasing the liver function(476) in balancing the prostaglandin hormones.

Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Cramp bark is also known as water elder or European cranberry bush, it grows to 4-5 m tall. The fruit is edible in small quantities, with a very acidic taste. It is said to have the best female medicine compared to other herbs.

The effects
1. Uterine relaxation(467)
Cramp bark is said to help increase the blood flow to the abdominal region, thereby it helps to relax the uterus resulting in lessening menstrual pain(464)(461).

2. Menstrual cramps(461)
It is said that cramp bark is a reproductive muscle tonic medicine that helps to reduce overactive uterine muscles(461)(467) caused by over-production of certain hormones in the prostaglandins family.

3. Immune system(462)
The herb contains high amount of antioxidants of which helps the immune system fighting against forming of free radicals and irregular cell growth(468), including the cells of endometriosis adhesion and reactive oxygen species such as superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide(463).

4. Nervous tension(464)
Since it is containing high amount of flavonoids(463), it helps to reduce centralnervous system disorders that causes symptoms of endometriosis such as mood swing, irritation, anxiety, and depression(465).

5. Bring on period
Cramp bark has been used to bring on period either caused by hormone imbalance or blood stagnation probably through enhancing the liver function(466)(467) in blood regulation, thus increasing the blood flow to the abdominal region.

Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides)containing high amount of Saponins, is a species of Caulophyllum and family of Berberidaceae. It is a medium-tall perennial with blue berry-like fruits and bluish-green foliage. It has been used by herbalists in relieving menstrual cramps in traditional medicine.

The effects
1. Reduce menstrual cramps
Blue cohosh is said to contain elements that help in protein and fat metabolism which helps to regulate the production of prostaglandins hormone during the menstrual cycle(456). Over-production of certain hormones of the prostaglandins family causes over-reaction of uterine muscles resulting in abdominal pains.

2. Hormone balancing
It is said that blue cohosh has a property in balancing the estrogen levels(458) by occupying the estrogen receptor sites, thereby it helps to lower levels of estrogen and reduces effects of estrogen dominance that increases the risks of cancer and abnormal cell growth(459)

3. Increase blood flow(460)
Blue cohosh is said to help bring blood to the abdomen and increases the circulation of blood resulting in easing pain caused by blood stagnation during menstrual period.

4. Nervous system(457)
Blue cohosh is an antispamsmodic that helps to ease tension of nervous system(458)(459) resulting in reducing symptoms of endometriosis during menstrual cycle.

5. Phytoestrogen(457)(458)
Blue cohosh contains phytoestrogen which helps to reduce the levels of bad estrogen that causes menstrual cramps.

Endometriosis: The effects of herbal Red raspberry leaf

Posted by Chantel Martiromo, Research article by Kyle J. Norton

During the last stage of the menstrual cycle, normally a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood, instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body to cause endometriosis. Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Red raspberry leaf (rubus idaeus) is a pale-green leaf of a raspberry plant with an upright shrub with perennial roots and prickly canes. It contains high amounts of vitamins and minerals that can help in treating women with endometriosis. Traditionally, it has been used as tea to give immediate relief to mouth and stomach problems.

1. Beta carotene and vitamin A
Beta carotene is water-soluble and it can be converted to vitamin A. It is a powerful antioxidant that helps our immune system(445) in fighting against the forming of free radicals, and endometrial implants and adhesion caused by inflammation(447) of endometrial cells growing in some other parts of the body.

2. Vitamin C(445)
Red raspberry leaf has an abundant amount of vitamin C. Besides helping to protect our body from bacteria, virus and abnormal cells development, it also helps to improve the digestive absorption(448) of other essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B complex, zinc, iron, and magnesium.

3. Vitamin E(445)
Besides helping to protect the fatty acid against degradation in the human body and to prevent the cell membranes' oxidation(446), it also helps to nourish the brain cells(449) which reduces symptoms of endometriosis such as mood swings, anxiety, and depression.

4. Vitamin B complex(450)
Vitamin B complex in the plant is vital for women with endometriosis. It not only reduces tension of the nervous system resulting in converting carbohydrates to energy which is necessary for the proper functions of the nervous system(451), but it also helps the liver in fat and protein metabolism in which it inhibits the bad estrogen produced by our body that causes menstrual camps(452) and abnormal cell growth(453).

5. Potassium(454)
Deficiency of potassium reduces the liver fat and protein metabolism causing the imbalance of fatty acids in the body leading to overactive uterine muscles as a result of over-production of certain hormones in the protagslandins family.

6. Calcium(455)
Calcium is needed to relax our body's muscles. Deficiency of calcium causes hyperactive muscles including the uterine muscles that control the abdominal cramps during menstrual cycle.

Endometriosis: The effects of herbal Angelica Root

Posted by Chantel Martiromo, Research article by Kyle J. Norton

During the last stage of the menstrual cycle, normally a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood, instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body to cause endometriosis. Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Dong quai or Dang Qui or Angelica Root is a tall plant with white green flowers. It has been used in Chinese medicine for over 4000 years in treating diseases caused by female reproductive system(438) including endometriosis(435). It is considered the "female ginseng" because of its balancing effect on the female hormonal system, including pre-menstrual syndrome and menstrual cramps.

1. Estrogen inhibitor
Dong quai contains phytoestrogens which help to maintain strong liver in protein and fat metabolism. By increasing the function of liver it helps to inhibit the bad estrogen(436) that causes menstrual cramps(437)(438) and symptoms of endometriosis.

2. Immune system
Dong Qui has found to stimulate the immune system in fighting again irregular cell growth and adhesion to cause tumors(439) of that reduces the risk of forming of endometrial tissues in other part of reproductive organs.

2. Regulating carbohydrate metabolism(441)
Dong quai also helps in carbohydrate metabolism by stimulating the right levels of insulin(440) produced by the pancreas which is necessary in providing energy for our body. Without strong liver function, too much insulin during the menstrual cycle will cause food and sugar craving.

3. Reduce menstrual cramps
Dong Quai is also a muscle tonic, it helps to calm the uterine muscle during menstrual cycle by balancing the levels of prostaglandins hormones resulting in calming over-active uterine muscles(437)(438).

4. Increase production of blood and replace blood loss(442)
Dong Quai has been used for women with heavy menstrual flow in preventing tisk of blood deficiency(444). By increasing the production of blood(442), it helps to maintain the strong circulation of blood that carries oxygen and nutrients to our body's cells and decreases the risk of anemia(443).
The root is said to be very effective in eliminating blood stagnation. By increasing the blood flow(442) to the abdominal regions, it helps to relax the uterine muscles and reduce the period pain caused by blood stagnation in the abdomen(437)(438).
