Ginger may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of diseases caused by a bacterial infection, some studies found.
Infection is a medical condition caused by bacteria multiplication after entering the body.
During the acute phase of infection before the bacteria enter the body, white blood cells of the systematic immune response to the bodily injury and damage by activating not only the emergency repair system to cover the wound through coagulation but also stimulating the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off the invaded pathogens.
However, in many instances, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can cause damage or death od nearby cells, leading to improper healing with the formation of scars.
In fact, failure to switch from the phase of production of proinflammatory cytokines to anti-inflammatory can interrupt the healing process, leading to chronic wound and inflammation.
Some researchers suggested that the failure of the switches may be caused by the weakened immune system that can not kill off all foreign invaders within 3 to 8 weeks.
Researcher continued, our immune system has evolved over thousands of year with an aim to kill off all stimuli and pathogens within a said of time, otherwise, they will adapt to the change, causing low-grade inflammation that cannot be reversed in many diseases such as type 2 diabetes and RA.
Most cases of acute infection were blocked in the first phase of the immune system response. In other words, the white blood cells won, pathogens were destroyed and the wound started to recover process without interruption.
However, if the pathogens won, after entering in the body, they can initiate infection through the stage of incubation where bacterial multiplying in the specific tissues and organs, leading to the colonization and in facilitating diseases development.
Patients with acute bacterial infection usually recover in a short period of time within 3 weeks.
Severely, if the immune system can not get rid of the invaders in the said time, some bacterial pathogens will establish life-long chronic infections by persistent establishment after an acute infection period.
Dr. Cierny G 3rd, the lead scientist, at the RE Orthopaedics, said," Failure of an acute inflammatory response to resolve a wound infection heralds a cascade of events that affect the host and pathogens, culminating in a chronic, refractory condition".
"The factors contributing to this outcome include immune compromise of the host, antimicrobial resistance, wound-healing deficiencies, and the adherence of pathogens to themselves and wound surfaces via an impenetrable, resistant biofilm.".
These results firmly suggested that if you have a weakened immune system you have a substantially increased risk of chronic bacterial infection.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of infection with little or no side effects researchers evaluated the effects of ginger against the monogenean parasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli.
The tested ethanolic and aqueous extracts were prepared for freeze-dried ginger.
An increase in extract concentration was associated with reduced time to parasite immobilization.
Injection at concentrations of 5 and 40ppt ethanolic extract induced parasites death at 26.1±0.7 and 4.9±0.3min, respectively. The ethanolic extract was more efficient. At 75 and 200ppt aqueous ginger extract, induced parasites died at 65.6±2.8 and 1.8±0.2min, respectively.
Bathing G. turnbulli-infected fish in the ethanolic ginger extract (i.e. 5 and 7.5ppt for 90 and 30min, respectively) significantly reduced infection prevalence and intensity.
The higher concentration (i.e. 7.5ppt) proved to be effective as those of Praziquantel, the conventional chemical.
Interestingly, oral treatments of G. turnbulli-infected guppies with diets supplemented with 10 and 20% ginger powder also proved to be ineffective in decreasing parasite load.
Furthermore, in schistosome mansonii infected mice, extract given daily for 45 days beginning at either 2nd day or 45 days post-infection showed a reduction of worm burden and the egg load in the liver and intestine which coincided with the reduction in granuloma diameters.
Ginger extract exerted a potential effect in reducing some inflammatory mediators that play a crucial role in schistosomal liver fibrosis and its complications.
The in-depth analysis also suggested that ginger extract also minimizes the deleterious effects of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in the tested mice.
Taken altogether, ginger extracts with the abundant bioactive compound may be used for the prevention and treatment of parasite-infected diseases, pending to the larger and multi-center human study.

Herbal Butterbur, the Potent Neuro-protective Bioactive Herbal Medicine
Herbal Butterbur may have a profound and strong effect on protecting the neuron integrity and validity against the onset of neuro diseases, some scientists suggested.
Neuroprotective effects are the activity which protects neurons of the brain and spinal cord.
A neurologic deficit is a condition of the brain, spinal cord, leading to weaker muscles, nerves or part of the body.
The causes of neurological deficit include genetic disorders, congenital abnormalities or disorders, infections, lifestyle or environmental health problems associated with malnutrition, and brain injury, spinal cord injury or nerve injury.
People of neurologic deficit may experience certain medical conditions and symptoms including partial or complete paralysis, and loss of sensation, seizures, difficulty reading, and writing and walking and decreased alertness.
However, some researchers suggested the most serious symptoms is a poor cognitive ability, depending on the parts of the brain or spinal cord which have been affected.
According to the statistic provided by the US government, more than 16 million people in the United States are living with cognitive impairment and disease with a tendency to increase at an alarming rate, particularly in the age group of 50 and over.
People with cognitive impairment, according to the report are more than three times as many hospitals stay as individuals who are hospitalized for some other condition, causing a substantial burden to the US health care system.
Out of all neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias alone are estimated to be the third most expensive disease to treat in the United States.
The Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures 20106, wrote, “ The average Medicaid payment for a person aged 65 or older with Alzheimer’s or other dementias is nine times higher than that for other beneficiaries in the same age group.”
Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.
The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.
The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.
The Second Military Medical University on finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of neurologic deficit examine the effect of the total bakkenolides, a bioactive compound isolated from the herbal Butterbur, in vitro cerebral ischemia model and oxygen-glucose deprivation of cultured nerve cells.
Oral administration of total bakkenolides showed a significant immediate effect after reperfusion at doses of 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg markedly reduced brain infarct volume and neurological deficits.
The chemical compound also was found to attenuate cell death and apoptosis in primary cultured neurons subject to 1-h hypoxia followed by 24-h reoxygenation.
The compound also protects the neurons by inhibiting the protein involved production of inflammatory cytokines through blocking activation of the classical activation pathway due to the injury.
Further differentiation of the experiment, researchers discovered that total bakkenolides inhibit the activation of pathways associated with neuron apoptosis.
Dr. the lead scientists after taking into account of co and confounders said, "our results provide a strong pharmacological basis for further understanding the potential therapeutic role of total bakkenolides in cerebral ischemic disease and shed new light on its neuroprotective mechanism".
Moreover, in the examine the neurologic deficit effects of 4 novel bakkenolides - bakkenolide-Ia ( 1), bakkenolide-IIa ( 2), bakkenolide-IIIa ( 3) and bakkenolide-IVa ( 4) isolated from the extract of the rhizome of Petasites tricholobus, researchers showed the compounds 1 - 4 exert a significantly neuroprotective activity in primary cultured neurons exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation and oxidative insults by enhancing the antioxidant activity.
According to the VITRO assay, all these compounds exhibited significant neuroprotective and antioxidant activities.
The findings strongly suggested total bakkenolides and its derivative demonstrate neurologic deficits protective effects through blocking the mechanisms involved neuron cells apoptosis through their antioxidant property.
Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur processed bioactive compounds such as bakkenolides may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of neurologic deficits.

Herbal Andrographis The Natural and Potential Anti Oral Cancer Functional Plant
Scientists may have found a bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Oral cancer is any malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva) and the roof of the mouth (palate).
Most cases of oral cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the oral cavity.
At stage 0 and 1, patients may not experience any symptoms as the cancer is localized in the outermost layer of tissue in the oral cavity or oropharynx less than 2 cm across.
However, as the cancer proliferation, at the advanced stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the oral cavity to infect other healthy tissue or organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
The liver, lungs, lymph nodes, and bones are common areas of oral cancer metastasis.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, every year, approximately 51,000 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer causing the death of 10,000 patients.
Depending on the stage of cancer, the 5 years survival rate of early stages (1 and 0) is 84% and 64% if cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs and/or the regional lymph nodes.
Men, age, exposure to the Ultraviolet light, genetic preposition, tobacco use, alcohol and chew betel quid are the risk factors associated with the early onset of oral cancer.
Some researchers suggested that infected by the Human papillomaviruses is the most common cause of oropharyngeal cancers in the Western world found in 25 percent of patients.
The cases controlled study consisted of newly diagnosed patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx.conducted by the McGill University in examining the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and risk of developing oral cancer showed that
* HPV DNA was detected in 19% of cases (14 out of 72), and 5% of controls (six out of 129).
* Among tonsil-related cancers (palatine tonsil and base of tongue) viral DNA was detected in 43% of cases (nine out of 21).
* The OR for tonsil-related cancers for high-risk HPV types was 19.32.
The findings clearly provide evidence supporting a strong causal association between HPV infection and tonsil-related cancers.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
The medical plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.
Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.
On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of oral cancer with no side effects, researchers examined the effects of Andrographolide (Andro) isolated from an herbal plant, Andrographis paniculata.
Injection of Andro potently suppressed squamous cell carcinogenesis induced by 7,12-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene (DMBA) in the hamster model of cheek buccal pouch.
Andro reduced the genes associated with the activation of a protein (The nuclear factor NF-κB) that promotes cell proliferation and prevents cell apoptosis.
Furthermore, Andro suppressed transcription factors that attenuate neoplastic cell proliferation, promoted cancerous cell apoptosis, and mitigated tumor-induced angiogenesis.
Moreover, Andro retarded growth decreased proliferation, and promoted apoptosis of Tb cells, a human tongue squamous cell carcinoma cell line, in time- and dose-dependent manners.
Dr. Wang LJ, the lead scientist wrote, "Our results thus demonstrate that NF-κB activation plays important roles in the pathogenesis of chemically induced squamous cell carcinoma". and By inhibition of aberrant NF-κB activation, Andro treats chemically induced oral squamous cell carcinogenesis".
In-depth analysis, Andro reduced the production of cytokines, chemokines and the nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathway that involves the initiation of cancer cells.
And, Andro inhibited cancer growth progression through a series of mechanisms, including inhibition of proteins that involved in cell growth, survival, development, and differentiation (such as Janus tyrosine kinases-signal transducers and activators of transcription, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and NF-κB signalling pathways) and cell division through activation of genes (p53 and p21) that are associated with tumor suppression.
These results clearly suggested Andro processes a strong effect in the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, survival, metastasis, and angiogenesis.
Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis processed a bioactive compound Andro may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of oral cancer with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Potent Anti Colon Cancer Herbal Remedy
Herbal Aloe vera may have a profound and positive effect on reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, with no side effects, some scientists suggested.
Colon Cancer is a condition characterized by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.
Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. In the early, as the cancer cells are only found in the outmost layer of the localized linning, patients may not experience any symptoms.
However, in the advanced stage, the colon cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue or organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
The most common sites of metastasis for colon or rectal cancer is the liver and lung.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. Every year approximately, 90000 new cases of colon cancer. 43,000 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed, leading to the death of 50,000 patients.
The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. About 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of colon cancer such as age, family and personal history, genetic preposition, smoking, alcohol, being overweight or obese are, many researchers suggested that the most common cause of colon cancer in the Western world is due to the promotion of the Western diet.
Dr. Jessie A. Satia, the lead scientist in the examine the dietary patterns and colon cancer risk in Whites and African Americans in North Carolina strongly indicated "Compared to the Western-Southern pattern, the fruit-vegetable and metropolitan patterns were associated with more healthful dietary behaviors (e.g., higher vegetable intake and lower red meat consumption), and demographic/lifestyle characteristics typically correlated with low colon cancer risk, for example, lower BMI, higher education, and higher NSAID use".
And, "The fruit-vegetable pattern was significantly inversely associated with colon cancer risk in Whites (OR = 0.4, 95% CI = 0.3–0.6) and the metropolitan pattern with a nonsignificant 30% risk reduction in both Whites and African Americans after adjustment for education".
These results strongly suggested that people who follow the diet pattern of the Western diet are at a substantial risk of the disease. In other words, the risk of colon cancer is significantly reduced for people who follow the diet with high fruits and vegetable and low red meat and processed foods.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.
The medical plant has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.
The main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include Aloe-Emodin, amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient or remedy for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology examine the anti-colon cancer effects on Aloe-emodin (AE), a natural anthraquinone.
In colon cancer cell lines, AE inhibited cell proliferation by the cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and protein associated with cellular proliferation and division.
AE also induced cancer cell death by stimulating the function of proteins associated with pro apoptosis.
In order to obtain additional information related to the Aloe vera anti-colon cancer activity, researchers analyzed the molecular mechanisms involved in the antimigratory and antiangiogenic activity of this hydroxy anthraquinone.
AE suppressed the phorbol-12-myristyl-13-acetate (PMA), a diester of phorbol in the promotion of promotes tumor expression through migration and invasion.
AE also inhibited the mRNA expression of colon cancer cells and the matrixes involved malignant tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis and gene associated with the signaling in the formation and dissemination of a range of cancers.
Furthermore, EA inhibited the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) expression in forming a new blood vessel in the promotion of endothelial cell migration/invasion.
Moreover, AE also suppressed the protein complex that controls the transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival.
Researchers wrote in the summary of the experiment, "These data indicate that AE target multiple molecules responsible for cellular invasion, migration and angiogenesis" and Inhibitory effect on angiogenic and metastatic regulatory processes make AE a sensible candidate as a specific blocker of tumor-associated events".
Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera processed a major bioactive compound Aloe emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of colon cancer.

Ginger, the Potential Anti Airway Hyperresponsiveness in Asthmatic Patients
Scientists may have found a pungent spice for the treatment of airway hyperresponsiveness in asthmatic patients, according to the studies.
Airway hyperresponsiveness is a hallmark of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused by the exaggerated response of the airways to nonspecific stimuli.
Asthma is respiratory disease associated caused by the spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, leading to symptoms of difficulty in breathing. In other words, asthma is a disease as the results from an allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity.
Asthma attacks can be dangerous, if not treated immediately. In an asthma attack, the airways become swollen and inflamed, leading to overproduction of mucus, that causes the narrowing of the airway.
According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in the US, or more than 26 million people have asthma, with 8.3 percent of adults and 8.3 percent of children.
The exact cause of asthma is not known. But exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens), including airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander are most common prevalent risk factors.
Some researchers suggested that widespread obesity may be correlated to the rise of asthmatic cases over the past few decades.
Dr. Sveta Mohanan and colleagues in examing the pathophysiology and implications of obesity and asthma in primary care centers wrote, "Mainstream clinical practice has yet to adopt aggressive management of obesity as a modifiable risk factor in asthma care, as is the case with a risk factor like tobacco or allergen exposure".
And, "Our review suggests that evidence of chronic inflammatory response linking obesity and asthma indicates a need to address obesity during asthma management, possibly using patient-centered approaches such as shared decision making".
The findings strongly indicated a link between obesity and the risk of asthma.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of respiratory infection with no side effects evaluated the ginger activity on airway smooth muscle relaxation and calcium regulation.
In isolated human ASM, researchers found that ginger caused significant and rapid relaxation.
In both guinea pig and human tracheas, injection of [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, and [6]-shogaol induced rapid relaxation of precontracted ASM (100–300 μM) compared to [10]-gingerol failure in the induction of relaxation.
In human ASM cells, exposure to [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, and [6]-shogaol, blunted subsequent Ca2+ responses to bradykinin (10 μM) and S-(−)-Bay K 8644 (10 μM) associated with the reuptake in airway smooth muscle compared to no response of the [10]-gingerol at a concentration of 100 μM.
Futhermore, in A/J mice, the nebulization of [8]-gingerol (100 μM), 15 minutes before methacholine challenge, significantly attenuated airway resistance, compared with vehicle.
These results suggested that not all compounds from ginger experts a respiratory protective effect through inducing airway smooth muscle relaxation, thus decreasing the symptoms of asthma.
Dr. Elizabeth A. Townsend, the lead scientists said, "these novel data show that ginger and its isolated active components, [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, and [6]-shogaol, relax ASM, and [8]-gingerol attenuates airway hyperresponsiveness, in part by altering [Ca2+] I regulation".
In order to reveal more information about ginger relaxed airway smooth muscle (ASM) activity, researchers examined the 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, or 6-shogaol bioactive compounds found in ginger potentiate β-agonist-induced ASM relaxation.
In human ASM, the airway issues were relaxed dose-dependently with β-agonist, isoproterenol, in the presence of vehicles, 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, or 6-shogaol (100 μM).
A Significant potentiation of isoproterenol-induced relaxation was observed with each of the ginger constituents. 6-Shogaol showed the largest shift in isoproterenol half-maximal effective concentration.
6-Gingerol, 8-gingerol, or 6-shogaol significantly inhibited PDE4D involved smooth muscle contractility, whereas 8-gingerol and 6-shogaol also inhibited phospholipase C β activity also involved constriction of smooth muscle.
The findings strongly suggested that Isolated components of ginger potentiate βagonist-induced relaxation in human ASM.
Taken altogether, ginger processed a number of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of asthmatic symptoms through attenuating air hyperresponsiveness.

Sinigrin, the Potential Alternative Antibiotic for Fungal Infection, Scientists Say
The bioactive compound Sinigrin may be used as antibiotics for the treatment of fungal infection, studies suggested.
Antibiotics are conventional medicine used for the treatment of microbial infection except for virus.
Fungi are kind of living organisms, including molds, molds, and mushrooms.
Most cases of fungal infections start in the lungs or on the skin. People with the weakened immune system or long-term use of antibiotics and immune suppressive medicine are prone to getting a fungal infection.
Histoplasmosis, which is the most common fungal infection in the US, caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum.
However, invasive candidiasis is a common infection, approximately 46,000 cases of invasive candidiasis were diagnosed in the US each year.
Believe or not, there are millions of different fungal species on the Earth, but only about 300 of those make people sick.
Most cases of fungal infection are treated with antibiotics topically or orally.
Untreated fungal infection may cause the spread of fungi to the bloodstream, leading to serious complications including death depending on types of fungal infection.
Sinigrin is a phytochemical glucosinolate, belongs to the family of glucosides found abundantly in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, the seeds of black mustard, etc.
Researchers with an aim to find a natural ingredient used by traditional medicine for the treatment of fungal infection investigated the effect of sinigrin in form of isothiocyanates (ITCs)against Alternaria brassicicola.
Exposure of the fungus to ICTs led to apoptosis through the decreased oxygen consumption rate, intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial membrane depolarization.
The effects of fungal-induced infection on the activation of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase signaling pathway involved in directing cellular responses to a diverse array of stimuli, were inhibited by the presence of ICTs.
The injection of ICTs also induced the expression of oxygen reactive species in killing the fungi through cytotoxicity.
However, ICT-derived ROS was also countered by the expression of different oxidative-response genes stimulated by the Alternaria brassicicola.
The findings strongly suggested that ITCs exert their toxicity on fungal cells.
Taken altogether, sinigrin in form of isothiocyanates (ITCs) may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of fungal infection, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of sinigrin as a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose-induced liver toxicity.

Ginger Kills Retinoblastoma Cancer Cells in Vitro
Scientists may have a pungent spice which processes a potential to treat retinoblastoma, according to studies.
Retinoblastoma (Rb) is a rare form of cancer rapidly developed due to the production of the immature cells of a retina. Retina, composed many layers, is the sensory membrane that lines the inner surface of the back of the eyeball. Most cases of retinoblastoma (Rb) are found in young children.
According to the statistics, provided by the American Cancer Society, approximately 200 to 300 children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma each year in the United States. The average age of children affected by retinoblastoma is 2. The disease rarely occurs in children older than 6.
Retinoblastoma diagnosed at the early stage is curable. However, the advanced form of retinoblastoma can be life-threatening.
Epidemiological studies suggested that age and genetic preposition are the 2 most common risk factors associated with the onset of retinoblastoma.
Some researchers suggested that children inherited gene Rb may be associated with the risk of retinoblastoma development.
Dr. Jun Yun and colleagues in examing the epidemiology and Rb1 gene of retinoblastoma said, "Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most common eye cancer in children and it can be inherited".
And, "In children with the heritable genetic form of Rb, there is a mutation on chromosome 13, called the retinoblastoma 1 (Rb1) gene. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical to the successful treatment of the Rb."
The results strongly suggested that the mutation gene Rb1prevents the protein to carry the function as a negative regulator of the cell cycle, leading to the unbalance between cell growth and development, a major cause of retinoblastoma.
Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the treatment of retinoblastoma with no side effects by examing the gingerol anti-cancer activity on retinoblastoma cancer cells (RB355 Cell Line).
Application of gingerol exerted dose-dependent and time-dependent growth inhibitory effects against the retinoblastoma cells.
The growth inhibitory effects of gingerol were less pronounced against normal fr2 cells. In other words, ginger application inhibited the growth of retinoblastoma cells without affecting the normal epithelial fr2 cells.
Compared to the untreated control cells, gingerol-treated cells at concentrations of 25, 75, and 150 μM had drastic changes in cell morphology, including rounding and withering of cells, with disorganized cell layers, the indications of rupture of the cell membrane and cellular damage.
Furthermore, untreated cells showed normal green fluorescence and gingerol-treated cells showed yellow/red fluorescence captured and classified by the image test.
Moreover, gingerol also displayed an inhibitory activity at a dose-dependent in the G2/M phase cell cycle arrest on RB355 retinoblastoma cells.
In-depth analysis, researchers found that the kitchen spice at concentration-dependent also inhibits the protein expressions involved in cellular functions such as cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, motility, survival, and intracellular trafficking,
Dr. Bo Meng and colleagues wrote in the final report, "Gingerol exhibits potent anticancer effects in RB355 human retinoblastoma cancer cells and these effects were mediated via apoptosis induction, cell cycle arrest, and modulation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway".
Where PI3K/Akt signaling pathway is an intracellular signaling pathway associated with the cell division cycle.
Taken altogether, ginger processed abundantly bioactive compound gingerol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of retinoblastoma, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
