Apricot, the Potential Anti Colon Cancer Functional Fruit, Scientists Find

Apricot maybe next generation of whole food medicine for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, some studies suggested.

Colon cancer is the medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the tissue of the colon as a result of the alternation of DNA of the healthy cells.

Most case of colon cancer starts on the surfaced cells of the inner lining of the colon tissue. However, at the later stage, the cancerous cells of the colon can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The colon also known as the large bowel or large intestine is an organ that involves the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down certain materials in the feces into substances in which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

The causes of colon cancer are unknown, however, researchers do know that age, family history, ethnicity, overweight or obesity, excessive alcohol drinking and long-term use of tobacco are the most common risk factor of colon cancer.

Some researchers suggested that good and poor choice of the diet may have potential effects to reduce and contribute to the risk of colon cancer.

People who follow the Western diet not only associated with higher risk but also the recurrent risk of colon cancer onset.

Dr. Alan Moss, the lead author in the study of "The Association Between Diet and Colorectal Cancer Risk: Moving Beyond Generalizations" wrote, "processed meat is carcinogenic to humans and lists processed meat as a group 1 substance. Processed meats result from salting, smoking, fermenting, or curing the meat, and common examples include ham, bacon, and sausage.5 Furthermore, red meat was declared as probably carcinogenic to humans, and red meat was listed as a group 2A substance.4 Red and processed meats are considered significant components of a “Western” diet. Other consumed substances that are associated with an increased risk of CRC include alcohol6 and tobacco".

On the other hand in the support of the healthy diet choice in the reduction of colon cancer risk, Dr.Jessie A. Satia, the lead scientists said, "the fruit-vegetable and metropolitan patterns were associated with more healthful dietary behaviors (e.g., higher vegetable intake and lower red meat consumption), and demographic/lifestyle characteristics typically correlated with low colon cancer risk".

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongs to the family Rosaceae.

Apricot is classified with the family o the plum and has yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

The chemical constituents of apricot include
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(a) and flavonoid glycosides.

Dr. Fahima Rashid, the lead author in finding a natural and bioactive from food sources with no side effect suggested that the butanolic extract may have a profound effect in reducing the risk of colon cancer by inhibiting the expression of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The antibacterial effect of the extract was attributed to the presence of bioactive Flavonoid glycoside.

Furthermore, in the investigation of the anti-neoplastic effects of MK615, an extract from the Japanese apricot (Prunus mume), against 3 colon cancer cell lines, SW480, COLO, and WiDr, cultured with MK615, researchers found that
* MK615 inhibited growth and lysed SW480, COLO and WiDr cells in a dose-dependent manner.

* MK615 induced apoptosis after 6 h incubation, at which point the occurrence of apoptotic cells was 68.0%, 65.7% and 64.7% for SW480, COLO, and WiDr cells, respectively.

* MK615 induced cells death through massive cytoplasmic vacuoles (autophagosomes) in all three cell lines.

Dr. Mori S, the lead author wrote at the final report, "MK615 has an antineoplastic effect against colon cancer cells. The effect may be exerted by the induction of apoptosis and autophagy".

Taken altogether, apricot may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of apricot anti-colon cancer possibilities.

Avocado, the Anti Inflammatory Diseases Functional Food

Intake avocado daily may have a strong effect in reducing the risk of acute and chronic inflammation, some researchers suggested.

Inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response with an aim to protect our body against the invasion of foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is caused by the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines which is activated the immune macrophages, a first line of the immune defense.

Chronic inflammation that lasts for several months and even year usually is the result of the immune system failing to eliminate all pathogenic invasion in the acute inflammation.

In some cases, chronic inflammation can also be caused by the immune white blood cells mistakenly attacks the body healthy tissue.

Some researchers suggested that long-term exposure to lower levels of irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air may also cause chronic inflammation.

According to the statistic, in 2000, nearly 125 million Americans were living with chronic conditions and 61 million (21%) had more than one. And these numbers are expected to increase substantially,

More scarcely, 3 of 5 people die due to chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes, worldwide.

If you experience symptoms of depression, anxiety and mood disorders, persistent gastrointestinal complications like constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux, weight gain, and frequent infections, you may be at the early stage of the development of chronic inflammation. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Dr. Roma Pahwa and Dr. Ishwarlal Jialal in the article of chronic inflammation suggested that many dietary and lifestyle changes may be helpful in removing inflammation triggers and reducing chronic inflammation as listed below. The most effective is weight loss.

Avocado is a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world. It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

In the finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of skin inflammation caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation without inducing side effects, researchers at the Granot Initiative Center conducted a study to test the ability of unique lipid molecules, polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFA), extracted from avocado, to reduce UVB-induced damage and inflammation in skin.

Introducing PFA to keratinocytes prior to their exposure to UVB exerted a protective effect, increasing cell viability, decreasing the secretion of IL-6, and PGE(2), the proinflammatory cytokines and enhancing DNA repair.

In human skin explants, treating with PFA reduced significantly UV-induced cellular damage.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the anti-inflammatory effect of the combination of avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression which is responsible for increase the inflammatory response and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) production in cytokine-activated equine chondrocytes, the cells harvested from normal or OA joints.

Before application of the combination of avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), equine chondrocytes responded to cytokine activation by up-regulated gene expression of COX-2 and increased PGE(2) production.

Application of ASU and EGCG marginally inhibited COX-2 expression and PGE(2) production in activated chondrocytes.

The combination of ASU and EGCG reduced COX-2 expression close to non-activated control levels and significantly inhibited PGE(2) production.

The inhibition of COX-2 expression and PGE(2) production was associated with the inhibition of NF-kappaB translocation in the regulation of cytokines and immune responses.

These results suggested that the combination may offer an attractive supplement or alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the management of osteoarthritis, a chronic inflammatory disease.

Additional study on the effects of avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) on proinflammatory mediators in chondrocytes and monocyte/macrophage-like cells, researchers also found that
* ASU reduced proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, COX-2, and iNOS expression in LPS-activated chondrocytes to levels similar to nonactivated control levels.

* The suppression of COX-2 and iNOS expression was paralleled by a significant reduction in PGE(2) and nitrite, respectively.

Taken altogether, avocado processed a significant anti-inflammatory activity may be considered a functional food for the prevention of inflammatory disease and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases with no side effects.

Say Good Bye to High Blood Cholesterol with Banana

Banana may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, some studies suggested.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally elevated blood cholesterol.

Hyperlipidemia is not caused by an a single factor. However, the hereditary factors are the most common cause.

Other prevalent risk factors associated with the early onset of high blood cholesterol are a diet high in saturated fat and triglyceride levels.

Certain medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, and hypothyroidism, may also promote hypertriglyceridemia.

Cholesterol produced by the liver or directly from dietary sources are necessary for the cell membrane and the production of the steroid hormone.

However, if cholesterol levels are elevated, large amounts of LDL or bad cholesterol can deposit in the arterial walls, leading to atherosclerosis.

The normal ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (low-density lipoprotein, LDL) to 1 (high-density lipoprotein, HDL). Any levels that are lower than 4 are considered a healthy blood cholesterol.

Long-term and untreated high blood cholesterol can cause numbers of cardiovascular disease, including stroke, coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, and diabetes.

If you are experiencing symptoms of chest pain or angina, pain while walking caused by the blocked arteries that are unable to send blood to the legs, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of high blood cholesterol.

High blood cholesterol is easy to treat by changing diet pattern, lifestyle and involving moderate physical activity.

Dr. Robert L. Rosenthal, at the Baylor University Medical Center, in the study "Effectiveness of altering serum cholesterol levels without drugs" said, " except for patients with extreme cholesterol elevations, consensus panels all promote dietary therapy as an initial step in the treatment of hyperlipidemia' and " a variety of dietary strategies designed to lower lipid levels, including the American Heart Association diet, the Ornish diet, the Mediterranean diet, exercise, phytosterols, fiber, soy products, and fish oil.

Therefore, the risk high blood cholesterol of people with a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetable, whole grain and less in saturated and trans fat, red meats and processed foods and lifestyle and involving moderate physical exercise are closed to zero.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

The research team at Okayama University in the finding the natural ingredient for lowering the cholesterol launched an investigation to examine the effect pulp of banana fruit (Musa sapientum L. var. Cavendishii) for its cholesterol-lowering effect in mice model.

Selected male rats were fed on a diet containing lard (50 g/kg) and cholesterol (5 g/kg).

Application of freeze-dried banana pulp showed a marked cholesterol-lowering effect when incorporated into a diet at the level of 300 or 500 g/kg,

Starch and tannin prepared from banana pulp were not responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effect. and banana lipids did not affect the concentration of serum cholesterol.

A rise of the concentration of serum cholesterol in mice group fed with dopamine, n-epinephrine, and serotonin was also reduced by the injection of the freeze-dried banana pulp.
Further examination also found that both soluble and insoluble fibers fractionated from banana pulp had a cholesterol-lowering effect, with the exception of cellulose.

Moreover, in the additional investigation of the hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects of ethanol extract of mature green fruits of Musa (green banana) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats, researchers launched a testing of the extract at two doses, 500 mg/kg body weight and 1000 mg/kg body weight in comparison to the standard drug, glibenclamide.

Rats administered with alloxan showed significantly increased levels of serum triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity.

Futhermore, lipid peroxides od rats administered with alloxan increased significantly while reduced glutathione (GSH) decreased considerably in liver and pancreas.

Oral administration of the ethanol extract of green fruits of Musa significantly decreased the levels of serum triacylglycerol, cholesterol and ALT activity.

More importantly, the green banana application significantly decreased the level of lipid peroxides while GSH content increased substantially in liver and pancreas.

The lowering cholesterol effect was found to dose independent. However, treatment with 500 mg/kg body weight of the extract showed a higher content of GSH and lower level of lipid peroxides in pancreas compared with glibenclamide.

Dr. Kaimal S, at the final report, wrote, "ethanol extract of mature green fruits of Musa AAA (Chenkadali) has antioxidant and hypolipidaemic properties and may be used for treating diabetes mellitus".

Taken altogether, banana and its extract may be considered s functional food for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects.

Apricot, the Most Prominent Fruit for the Prevention and Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer

Apricot may have a potential for the cure of pancreatic cancer without inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the pancreas.

Most primary pancreatic cancer starts with the alternated DNA cells on the surface of the inner lining of the pancreas organ.

At the advanced stage, the malignant cells in the pancreas can travel a distance way to infect other tissue and organ through lymph and blood.

Including all the stages, the 5 years survival rate of pancreatic cancer is 7% and it is considered the most rapidly fatal cancer.
Most people at the early stage of pancreatic cancer do not experience any symptoms. However, at the later stage, as the tumor has grown large enough, it can suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, leading to localized symptoms and severe pain.

The exact causes of pancreatic cancer are unknown. Age, gender, race, family history. and inherited genetic syndromes were found to associate with the risk factor of the onset of the disease, epidemiologically.

Some researchers suggested that the most common risk factors that cause the development of pancreatic cancer are found in patients associated with a history of tobacco use and obesity.

Dr. Alguacil J in the study to examine the association between noncigarette tobacco use (i.e., cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco) and pancreatic cancer risk among nonsmokers of cigarettes, said, "Cigarette smoking is an important and well-established cause of pancreatic cancer." and "Long-term use of smokeless tobacco (i.e., >20 years) was also associated with a nonsignificant increased risk" and "heavy use of smokeless tobacco, and to a lesser extent, cigar-smoking may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer among nonsmokers of cigarettes".

These results suggested cigarettes and noncigarette smoking are associated with the increased risk of pancreatic cancer in a type-dependent manner.

In the obesity front, Dr, Michaud DS in the study "Obesity and Pancreatic Cancer" said, "obesity early in adulthood is strongly associated with future risk of pancreatic cancer and that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor. There is increasing evidence suggesting long-standing diabetes type 2 and insulin resistance are important etiological factors of this disease, providing a strong mechanistic link to obesity".

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongs to the family Rosaceae.

Apricot is classified with the family of the plum and has yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

The chemical constituents of apricot include
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(a) and flavonoid glycosides.

The research team on cancer program at the Shimane University showed that MK615 produced from Japanese apricot and contains several cyclic triterpenes, such as oleanolic and ursolic acids may have an effect in the inhibition of pancreatic cancer.

The experiments were performed on several human cancer cell lines exposed to MK615 for 7 days and in vivo growth of human pancreatic cancer MIAPaCa-2 cells.

The application of MK615 inhibited the growth of several human cancer cell lines in a concentration-dependent way.

Pancreatic cancer MIAPaCa-2 cells were highly sensitive to the growth-inhibiting effects of MK615.

Treatment with MK615 preferentially induced cell death in human cancer cells without causing harm to the nearby cells such as human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and mouse bone marrow cells.

MIAPaCa-2 cells incubated with MK615 in the presence of antioxidant, growth-inhibition was significantly reduced.

MK615 induced the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in the exertion of cytotoxicity to the cancer cells but not in HUVEC.

Finally, researchers also found that MK615, in both the presence and absence of gemcitabine, significantly inhibited the growth of human pancreatic cancer cells as xenografts without apparent adverse effects.

The findings suggested that MK615, a supplement produced from Japanese apricot, processes a potential and therapeutic value in treating pancreatic cancers through a reactive oxygen species-dependent mechanism.

The study was published on the National Institutes of Health

Taken altogether, Apricot with abundant bioactive compounds such as oleanolic and ursolic acids may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

Papaya, The Anti Cancer Functional Food Targeted by Chemotherapy and Pharmacology

Papaya extract may be the next potential pharmacological target to identify the ingredients for the treatment of cancers, some scientists suggested.

Cancer is the class of chronic conditions characterized by the abnormal cell growth caused by the alteration of healthy cell DNA which starts on the surface of the inner lining of the bodily organs.

At the advanced stage, after colonizing most of the tissue of the primary organ, the malignant cells travel a distance away through lymph and blood to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Researchers do not know why people with similar health conditions, family history, and race, some are susceptible to cell alternation in the initiation of cancer while others do not.

There has not been much success in the debate over whether the cancerous state is originated in a single cell or whether it is a reflection of aberrant behavior on the part of a ‘society of cells’.

The tissue organization field theory (TOFT) suggested that cancer onset is a result of a breakdown of tissue organization involving many cells from different embryological layers. In other words, cancer is a tissue-based disease and that proliferation is the default state of all cells.

The cancer stem cell (CSC) theory hypothesized that cancers are the result of genetic and epigenetic changes that take place within single cells. In other words, cancer is driven by a rare subpopulation of cells, designated cancer stem cells (CSC).

Other researchers proposed that cancer is the rewiring of the cell’s protein interaction networks mediated by intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) that drives the tumorigenic process.

In other words, the disorders of signaling proteins and amino acid residues are the culprits that drive the onset of cancers and chronic diseases.

Regardless of the hypotheses, as of today, the exact causes of cancer are still unknown. Certain risk factors are known to associate with the onset of cancers, including an increase in age, excessive alcohol drinking, cancer-causing chemicals, chronic inflammation, poor diet, hormones therapy, immunosuppression, and infectious pathogens, according to epidemiological studies.

According to the World center fund International, in 2012, there were 14.1 million cancer cases, affecting 7.4 million in men and 6.7 million in women. This number is expected to increase to 24 million by 2035.

Papaya, a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae, native to the tropics of the Americas.

The fruit has been used in traditional medicine as remedies for many various ailments, including gastric problems, inflammation, and cancer.

The major chemical constituents of papaya include ethanol extract including benzylisothiocyanate are said to exhibit immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antihyperlipidemic, anti cellular oxidative stress, anti neural tube defect, etc. effects.

Aqueous extract, according to University of Tokyo, on various tumor cell lines, showed to inhibit significant growth activity, through immunomodulatory effects including, interleukin 12 (also known as natural killer cell stimulatory factor 2), IL-12p70(a heterodimer), IFN-gamma(regulation of immunologically relevant genes) and TNF-alpha(innate immune response against pathogenic infection).

Fermented papaya, a traditional dish of many Southeast Asian cultures, processed antioxidant, and immune-modulating potentials, through the influence of signaling cascades associated with cell growth and survival, from epidemiological and in-vitro studies of patients with diabetes.

In Azoxymethane (AOM) induced colon cancer in rats, papaya peel extract (PapPE), showed a significantly ameliorated the cytotoxic effects of AOM, through the potent antioxidant activities in the reduction of oxidative stress (glutathione depletion, lipid peroxidation).

In cultured human lung cancer H69 cell, Benzyl glucosinolate (BG) found in the pulp and the seed of papaya, inhibited cancer cell proliferation at a dose of 6.5 μmol, probably through its effect in superoxide generation and apoptosis induction.

Benzylisothiocyanate (BITC), another chemical constituent also mediated apoptosis of prostate and pancreases cancer cells through activation of both procaspase-8 pathways(initiation of apoptosis) and cell cycle arrest, inhibition of the advanced ovarian cancer cell lines through activation of caspase-3(activation in the apoptotic cell) and -9(activation of apoptotic process), and cleavage of PARP-1(repair of DNA damage) and breast cancer through generation of reactive oxygen species.

Dr/ Nguyen and the research team at The University of Queensland told PubMed "(The) extract-based or specific compound-based investigations and emphasize the aspects (of papaya) that warrant future research to explore the bioactive in C. papaya for their anticancer activities".

Taken altogether, fermented papaya containing major chemical constituents such as Benzyl glucosinolate (BG) and Benzylisothiocyanate (BITC) may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers, but further studies with large sample size and multi-centers are necessary to reaffirm papaya anti cancers possibility.

Tomato, the Anti Hyperlipidemia Functional Food for Type 2 Diabetes

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high blood cholesterol in the bloodstream. The condition is also a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the risk type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance with a double-edged sword. On one hand, cholesterol is essential for the body to build strong cellular membranes, production of steroids hormones, and vitamin D and aided digestion, on another hand, it also causes a number of diseases if overexpressed in the blood.

Cholesterol is either produced by the liver or by the intake of fat.

There are 2 types of cholesterol in the body, the low-density lipoprotein (LDL, bad cholesterol) and high-density lipoprotein (good cholesterol).

Where high-density lipoprotein (HDL, good cholesterol) plays a critical role to return the cholesterol to the liver for future use. Low levels of high-density or high levels lipoproteins may result in blood cholesterol accumulated in the blood, leading to high blood cholesterol.

The optimized ratio of LDL/ HDL is any numbers that less than 4.

Dr. Joan Carles Escola`-Gil, the lead scientist in the evaluation of the Western diet risk of high blood cholesterol wrote, ". The HFHC diet caused a significant increase in plasma cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and liver cholesterol and enhanced macrophage-derived [ 3 H]cholesterol flux to feces by 3- to 4-fold".

In other words, long-term intake of high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers examined the effect of tomato and grape pomace to the cholesterol (0.3%) diet of male Wistar rats produced a dose-dependent effect.

During the experiment, researchers found that at 5% pomace of either and grape or combination showed no effects on reduced levels of hyperlipidemia.
However, 15% pomace of tomato and grape reduced serum cholesterol levels from 4.4 mmol/L to 2.5 mmol/L and 2.0 mmol/L respectively.

Interestingly, at the concentration of 15%, both tomato and grape pomace induced a redistribution of cholesterol in lipoproteins associated with an anti-atherogenic profile and reduced cholesterol concentration in very-low-density lipoprotein (VDL) (24% [tomato], 50% [grape]) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (3-fold, 3.6-fold).

Furthermore, both types of pomace enhanced the function of HDL in cholesterol transport by reducing the VLDL and LDL contribution.

Moreover, tomato and grape pomace reduced plasma levels of conjugated dienes involved in cholesterol oxidation in high levels by 30-50%

Additionally, injection also improved the antioxidant enzymes in the liver against lipid peroxidation.

In rats fed with hypercholesterolemic feed and treated with lycopene orally by gavage at the dose of 5, 25, 45, 65, 85, and 105, 125 mg/kg/bw-1/d-1, researchers found that injection of all doses of lycopene exerted a statistical significance in reduced the levels of cholesterol observed by inverse U shape at the 4 weeks of the experiment.

Furthermore, serum lycopene concentration was negatively correlated with the levels of serum TC, LDL-C, particularly in the cerebral LDL-C.

Serum lycopene concentration was also found to have a positive correlation with the expression of Claudin-5 associated with brain microvascular endothelial cell proliferation, migration. and the number of neurons in hippocampal CA1 and CA3.

In other words, serum lycopene showed a strong effect on the protection of neurons against hyperlipidemia in the brain that facilitates neurons damage.

Dr. Wang W, the lead scientist said, "These results suggested an inverse U-shape relation between dose and serum concentration of lycopene, and intermediate doses were most effective to protect cerebral vessels and neurons from being damaged by hyperlipidemia".

Taken altogether, tomatoes processed high amounts of lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Amtak Baechu Cabbage Induces Pancreatic Cancer Cells Death

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, the pancreas aids the digestive system to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

Traditional Chinese medicine suggested that the pancreas is a vital organ responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our body.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.

Most cases of pancreas cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue. However, as the cancer progress, the malignant cells of the pancreas, although unusual may travel a far distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The pancreas cancer was found to be the site of metastasis from renal cell cancer, lung, colon and breast cancers.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate at stage IA pancreatic cancer is only14%.

The exact causes of pancreatic cancer are identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, family history, race, gender, smoking, being obese or overweight and a medical condition such as diabetes is the most prevalent risk of the disease.

The genetic and acquired genetic mutation of p16 and TP53 and KRAS, BRAF, and DPC4 (SMAD4) were also found in patients with pancreatic cancer.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer property activity researchers investigated the effects of kimchi prepared using the standard Baechu cabbage and Amtak Baechu cabbage on hepatic cancer cells.

The study included 4 different kimchi samples prepared for this study which are t(1) the standard Baechu cabbage and dry salt treatment method (SK-D); (2) the Amtak Baechu cabbage and dry salt treatment method (AK-D); (3) the standard Baechu cabbage and brine solution treatment method (SK-B); and (4) the Amtak Baechu cabbage and brine solution treatment method (AK-B).

Based on the results of the analysis,
* The liver cancer cells showed a significant increase in cell growth inhibition when exposed to AK-D and AK-B compared with SK-D and SK-B (p < 0.05). At 2.0 mg/mL,

* AK-B and AK-D treatment exerted 2.0 times against the Capan-2 cells, compared with SK-B and SK-D.

* AK-D and AK-B treatment compared with SK-D and SK-B demonstrated a significant increase of tumor-suppressive p21 levels associated with apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

* AK-B displayed higher ongoing cytotoxic effects compared with AK-D.

Based on the evidence, researchers said,. "Overall, these results indicate that kimchi made with Amtak Baechu cabbage and treated with brine solution (AK-B) had a superior anticancer potential against both types of cancer cells, with the effects being greater in pancreatic cancer cells compared with liver cancer cells".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of
pancreatic cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Cucumber Inhibits All Parameters Associated with Insulin Resistance In Vivo

Insulin Resistance, a hallmark in patients with type II diabetes is the condition in which the cells in tissues that start to resist or ignore the signal of the hormone insulin.

In other words, the insulin produced by the body no longer can convert glucose to energy even with the presence of the hormone insulin, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately, 1 in 3 people in the United States have prediabetes, including half of those aged 60 and older.

People with insulin resistance have been found to increase the risk for prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Although researchers do not know the exact cause of insulin resistance, they do not certain risk factors such as genetic preposition, aging, and ethnicity are associated with the onset of the condition.

However, an unhealthy lifestyle that causes excess body weight, too much belly fat, smoking and lack of exercise are the most prevalent factors in the Western world.

Dr. Martin O. Weickert wrote, "Insulin resistance has been proposed as the strongest single predictor for the development of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM). Chronic oversupply of energy from food, together with inadequate physical activity, has been recognized as the most relevant factor leading to overweight, abdominal adiposity, insulin resistance, and finally T2DM".

And, "Conversely, energy-reduced diets almost invariably to facilitate weight loss and reduce abdominal fat mass and insulin resistance. However, sustained weight loss is generally difficult to achieve, and distinct metabolic characteristics in patients with T2DM further compromise success".

The findings strongly suggested that by maintaining a healthy lifestyle including a healthy diet and moderate exercise, insulin resistance is preventable.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of insulin resistance, researchers investigated the effect of the effects of Cucumis melo L. (Cucumis) on obesity-induced insulin resistance (IR) in genetically leptin-deficient Lepob/Lepob mice.

According to the results of the tested assays, Cucumis showed significant activity in the improvement of IR in obese mice and inhibition of inflammation in adipose tissue and blood.

The efficacy of Cucumis against insulin resistance of the tested mice was also attributed to the enhancement of the ratio of gut microbiota in the gut-associated with improvement of insulin sensitivity.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, " administration of Cucumis improved IR by reducing inflammation, thereby changing the gut microbiota composition. Cucumis is thus a promising treatment for obesity-induced insulin resistance and the inflammatory state".

The Lund University in the study of glycemic and insulinemic responses to fermentation products suggested that adding pickled cucumber to breakfast with a high-glycemic-index bread significantly lowered postprandial glycemia and insulinemia compared to no metabolic response of regular milk and fresh cucumber.

In other words, fermentation products such a prickle play an essential role in reducing the risk of insulin resistance.

Carrot Juice, the Potent Anti Hypertension Functional Food

Scientists may have found a common vegetable that has the potential to decrease high blood pressure quickly with no side effects, some studies suggested.

Hypertension is a condition characterized by persistent high blood pressure.

In the US approximately, one-third of the adults have hypertension, affecting over 77 million people in the country.

Additionally, among adults age 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.

Hypertension is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.

The cause of hypertension is a result of hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), due to the slow progression of plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries,

Some researchers suggested that hypertension is associated with the risk factors of a genetic preposition, longterm unhealthy diet, and lifestyle.

Dr. Butler MG, the lead scientist at the Kansas University Medical Center, in the study "Genetics of hypertension. Current status" wrote, " The heritable component of blood pressure has been documented in familial and twin studies suggesting that 30%-50% of the variance of blood pressure readings are attributable to genetic heritability and about 50% to environmental factors".

However, the genes that cause the onset of hypertension are unknown. Researchers suggested that
all genes involved with the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system controlling blood pressure and salt-water homeostasis, proteins in hormonal regulation of blood pressure (enzymes and receptors of the mineralo- and glucocorticoid pathways) and proteins coded by genes involved in the structure and/or regulation of vascular tone are susceptible to the cause of the condition.

Furthermore, according to the Journal of Human Hypertension in the article "Dietary and lifestyle factors in hypertension", adoption of a healthy diet and lifestyle is important for preventing hypertension among individuals who are free of hypertension and has a central role in improved blood pressure control among patients with hypertension.6–8 For patients with hypertension, dietary and lifestyle interventions are commonly recommended as an initial strategy or as an adjunct to antihypertensive medication to control blood pressure and improve the cardiovascular risk profile.

And, regular physical activity and aerobic exercise more than 5 h per week was associated with a lower risk of incident hypertension.18 and anaerobic interval training program 2 days per week reduced levels of blood pressure in hypertensive and normotensive men.

These results suggested that if you follow a healthy diet, lifestyle and regular physical activity, you can not have hypertension regardless of the genetic preposition.

Unmanaged hypertension can lead to a heart attack, stroke, and other complications such as hypertensive retinopathy. chronic kidney disease.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the study to reaffirm the effects of Daucus carota (carrot) for the treatment of hypertension in traditional medicine, researchers at The Aga Khan University Medical College conducted an experiment to test the antihypertensive activity of two coumarin glycosides DC-2 and DC-3 isolated from the vegetable.
In normotensive anesthetized rats, intravenous administration of the compounds lowers the arterial blood pressure in a dose-dependent of 1-10 mg/kg.

In vitro, both compounds caused a dose-dependent (10-200 microg/ml) inhibitory effect on spontaneously beating guinea-pig atria as well as on the K+ -induced contractions of rabbit aorta at similar concentrations.

The findings suggested that carrot may process antihypertensive property in blocking the calcium channels which can induce the membrane excitation of vascular muscle in the contribution to hypertension.

In the concerns of obesity-associated with chronic, low-grade inflammation predisposing the individual to hypertension and impaired blood glucose homeostasis, scientists launched an investigation to examine whether phenolic acids from purple carrots are effective at reversing inflammation and metabolic alterations through the mean of the acid in the Mediterranean diet

After the final assessment, researchers found that

* The mean intake of total phenolic acids of 362.6 mg/day is associated with the reduce the risk of hypertension.

* When taking into account individual subclasses of phenolic acids, only hydroxyphenyl acetic acid was inversely associated with hypertension.

The findings suggest that dietary phenolic acids may be inversely associated with hypertension, irrespectively of their dietary source.

Taken altogether, purple carrot with abundant phenolic acids may be considered a natural functional food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension.

Broccoli Enhances Xenobiotic Metabolism Against the Risk of Cancer

Xenobiotic metabolism is an action that protects the host against chemicals that affect normal metabolism.

Other common metabolisms may include
* Nutrient metabolism is a process that absorbs end products of food digestion such as monosaccharides, also has been found to protect the gut mucosal barrier in preserving the ability to absorb nutrients.

* Drug metabolism is the process to alter chemical of a drug that may cause harm to the body

The gut microbiota plays a critical role in regulating the systemic metabolism of the host including produced vitamins, synthesized all essential and nonessential amino acids, and carried out biotransformation of bile by interacting with other organs such as intestine, liver, brain, and other organs through the host-microbiota and co-metabolism structure to form an ametabolic axis.

More precisely, under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health,
* Gut microbiota improves the absorption of the dietary nutrients of the digestive system

* Gut microbiota protects the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity through facilitating the excretion.

* Gut microbiota also maintains the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier by enhancing the epithelial cells that protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of intestinal in nutrients adsorption.

* Gut microbiota interacts with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibits the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

The imbalanced of the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative impact on human health and diseases.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticarcinogenic activity, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), the isothiocyanate derived from 4-methyl-sulphinyl butyl glucosinolate in broccoli induce-xenobiotic metabolizing.

The study included 16 subjects randomized, into 3-phase crossover dietary trial of standard broccoli, high glucosinolate broccoli, and water.

According to the results of the trial, consumption of high glucosinolate broccoli showed a strong effect in the improvement of several xenobiotics metabolizing genes, including thioredoxin reductase, Aldo-keto reductases, and glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit.

Furthermore, the affected genes also have been found to be improved after exposure to SF, in cell and animal models.

Compared to phytochemical sulforaphane (SF) and sulforaphane (SF), only 1 such gene was affected in the consumption of standard broccoli.

Taken altogether, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process the potential anticarcinogenic activity by upregulating the gene associated with xenobiotic metabolism, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Red Cabbage, the Potential Anti-Mammalian Cancer Healthy Food

Cancers are a class of chronic diseases associated with cell growth in the tissue and organs. At the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy cells and tissues.

There are many types of cancer, depending on the location where cancer begins.

As of today, researchers do not know what are the exact cause of cancers. however many researchers believe, exposure to environmental toxins, genetic mutation, and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases.

Genetic mutation od BRCA1 and BRCA2 are associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and alternation of gene PTEN.that suppress the growth of tumors also increase the risk of cancers.

According to the statistic provided by the UK Cancers research, in 2012, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred worldwide.

Sadly, more than 4 in ten cancers occurring worldwide are in countries at a low or medium level of the Human Development Index (HDI).

The four most common types of human cancer, occurring worldwide are
* Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the lung. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may invade other healthy tissues and organs a distance away from the original site.

According to statistics, In 2015, approximately 26,600 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer and 20,900 will die of it.

* Female breast cancer
Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

* Colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells DNA.

Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.

The disease is also the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

* Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is defined as a condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth which spread to the distant parts of the body. Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.
Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. The veggie leave is highly nutritious cultivated as foods in most parts of Europe.

On finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of cancers, researchers examined, in vitro cytotoxic effects and the mode of interaction of biologically synthesized Ag and Au nanoparticles (NPs) using Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. Rubra (BOL) against HT-1080 cancer cells and bacterial cells.

According to the tested analysis,* The Ag NPs showed a stronger free radical scavenging activity in vitro compared to the Au NPs.
* Both nanoparticles (NPs) exerted the cytotoxic effects are mediated through nuclear morphological changes and DNA damage.

* Intracellular localization of Ag and Au NPs induced HT-1080 cancer cells apoptosis.

These results strongly suggested that the Ag and Au NPs have easily entered and accumulated into the cytosol and nucleus to activate the inflammatory and apoptosis pathways to induce damage in cancer cell DNA.

Most importantly, Ag and Au NPs showed no clear toxic effects and no nuclear abnormalities in peripheral blood cells

Taken altogether, red cabbage may be considered a functional food for the treatment of mammalian cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli Protects the Kidney Cell Against Chemo Drug Adverse Effects

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found in the left and right side in the retroperitoneal space in the body.

The function of kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Chemotherapy is a drug treatment that kills cancer cells by inducing cytotoxicity. Most cases of chemotherapy have been found to causes severe side effects on the patient, including fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, bowel issues such as constipation or diarrhea, hair loss, mouth sores, skin and nail problems.

Chemo drugs have also been shown to induce nephrotoxicity, by increasing the production of ROS and inhibiting several antioxidant enzymes to orchestrating kidney oxidative stress injury.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti kidney toxicity induced by chemo-drugs, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), a natural constituent of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, on Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II, CIS) nephropathy.

In rodents, before treatment with FN, cisplatin therapy triggered marked activation of stress signaling pathways to promote cancer cell death in the kidney by increasing the DNA fragmentation, apoptotic proteins,

Furthermore, CIS also exhibited the terminal associated with attenuation of various prosurvival signaling pathways and increased the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the kidney.

In other words, the injection of CIS not only induced kidney injury but also caused damage to the death of the kidney cells, through several aforementioned mechanisms.

After the administration of SF, all these effects were significantly attenuated by pretreatment of rodents with SFN.

Based on the evidence, researchers wrote, " SFN is able to prevent the CIS-induced renal injury by modulating these pathways, providing a novel approach for preventing this devastating complication of chemotherapy".

Taken altogether, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process the potential anti-side effect of CIS in the induction of kidney toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Carrot, The Vegetable Which Promotes Weight Loss and Prevents the Onset of Obesity

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect on reducing weight loss in the obese population, some scientists suggested.

Weight loss is an intentional action referred by the medicine, health, or physical fitness communities as a reduction of the total body mass, including loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue or lean mass.

Obesity is a condition or disease characterized by extreme overweight. According to the Body Mass Index calculator, BMI between 25.0 to <30 is considered overweight and BMI of 30.0 or higher, is considered obese.

According to the National Institue of Health, obese people are associated with numbers of diseases and conditions, including diseases of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, stroke, gallbladder disease, liver disease, certain types of respiratory disease and infertility and conditions of high blood pressure, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis.

Most researchers agreed that obesity is caused by a genetic mutation inherited from the parents, a longterm unhealthy diet with consumption of high amounts of energy foods, particularly fat and sugars and physical inactivity.

Other causative factors also include certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and Cushing's syndrome and long-term use of certain medications such as corticosteroids and antidepressants.

The general belief also suggested that some smokers may gain weight if they quit smoking.

According to the study conducted by the J University of Georgia, using a combined approach to promote nutrition and physical activity policies and practices in early care and education may reduce the risk of child obesity.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

Estrogen-deficient animals with diet-induced obesity were examined in the study by the Obesity/Diabetes Center, Asan, Korea using black carrots to test the mechanisms of the long-term consumption of unfermented black carrot extract (BC) and its extracts fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum (BCLP) or Aspergillus oryzae (BCAO) in the prevention of menopausal symptoms including impaired energy, glucose and lipid metabolism

During the experiment, ovariectomized (OVX) rats were fed four different high-fat diets containing 2 % dextrin (OVX-control), 2 % BC, 2 % BCLP, or 2 % BCAO for 12 weeks. Sham rats were fed high-fat diets containing 2 % dextrin.

Fat mass and weight gain in tested mice were lower in descending order of OVX-control > BC and BCLP > BCAO due to increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation.

BC, BCLP and especially BCAO all normalized HOMA-IR, an indicator of insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.

Furthermore, BCAO markedly decreased hepatic triglyceride levels by increasing gene expressions of CPT-1 and PPAR-α, which are involved in fatty acid oxidation, and decreasing mRNA expressions of FAS and SREBP-1c, which are associated with fatty acid synthesis.

More importantly, Cyanidin and malvidin markedly decreased fat accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by increasing CPT-1 and decreasing FAS expression in the liver fat metabolism and SREBP-1c expression in the regulation of the genes with the function of lipid metabolism in comparison with cyanidin-3-rutinoside, an anthocyanin, and malvidin-3,5-diglycosides, another anthocyanidin.

Where 3T3-L1 is a cell line derived from 3T3 cells used in biological research on adipose tissue.

These results suggested that unfermented black carrot extract (BC) and its extracts fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum (BCLP) processed an anti-obesity mechanism by preventing the exacerbation of lipid and glucose metabolism, the major's causes of weight gain.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti-weight gain possibilities.

Cabbage Protects the Blood Vessel Against Vascular Inflammation

Blood vessels formed part of the circulatory system are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.
Atherosclerosis is characterized by chronic inflammation of the vascular wall.

Chronic vascular inflammation has been found to cause historical changes in the blood vessel walls, leading to blood vessel wall thickening, weakening, narrowing or scarring on orchestrating blood flow restriction, resulting in organ and tissue damage.

Vasoprotection is the process to improve the function of the blood vessels, including the use of the herbal and natural remedy.

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system's self-protection to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, pathogens... from our body.

Acute inflammatory inflammation is a result of the over-response of the immune system after sensing the injury or damage of the body through activating the protein associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

The production of proinflammatory cytokines induced by the immune response is to kill the invasive pathogens, which try to enter the body through the wound.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines may induce overproduction of these cytokines can cause death or damage to the nearby cells, leading to scar formation and symptoms of localized swelling, redness and fever.

Chronic inflammation is a serious condition caused by the immune system to adapt to the new change due to its inability to kill all the invasion within a set of times.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find natural food that inhibits inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich extract from red Chinese cabbage (ArCC).

According to the inhibitory effects in cultured endothelial cells and hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α, the pro-inflammatory cytokines -stimulated endothelial cells.

Furthermore, ArCC's also processed the ability to downregulate the expression and transcription of endothelial adhesion molecules associated with the increased response to cytokines and other inflammatory mediators.

Moreover, the regulation of adhesion molecules was accompanied by transcriptional inhibition of nuclear factor-κB, which restricted cytoplasmic localization in triggering inflammation.

Additionally, Administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) inhibited aortic inflammation in hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice,

More precisely, ArCC markedly lower leukocyte infiltration reduced plaque formation and lowered concentrations of blood inflammatory cytokines compared to control mice.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " ...the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases.".

Taken altogether, Korean cabbage kimchi may be used for the treatment of vascular inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fennel, The Herbal Remedy Which Protects Our Body Against The Onset of Acute Inflammation and Chronic Inflammatory Diseases, Scientists Find

Fennel may process a strong anti-inflammatory activity in reducing the risk of tissue injury and cell apoptosis, some scientists suggested.

Acute inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response to protect our body against the invasion of foreign bacteria and viruses by the initiated production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection.

However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines initiated by the immune system for a prolonged period of time may lead to cell damage and sometimes death of the healthy cells in the infectious site and nearby cells.

These complications can also cause improper healing for the forming of scars and damage to the tissue of the organ, affecting and limiting the organs functioning, such as liver scars caused by hepatitis virus infection.

Badly enough, some proteins process the duo functions of pro and anti-inflammation. Under abnormal conditions, they can switch from their original action of anti-inflammatory cytokines to pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, chronic inflammation occurred that lasts for months or years when the immune system response to the site of infection failure to eliminate agents that cause acute inflammation.

An autoimmune disorder that attacks normal healthy tissue, mistaking them for pathogens that can also cause chronic inflammatory disease.
Most cases of inflammation, are treated with NSAID's, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, in some people intake of these medications can cause common and serious side effects, including gastrointestinal issues, such as pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and stomach ulcers, kidney problems, anemia,.... and swelling in the leg.

If you are presently taking anti-inflammatory medicine, please make sure that you discuss the adverse effects with your doctor.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

According to study of BALB/C mice were intraperitoneally administered anethole (62.5, 125, 250, or 500 mg/kg) 1 h before intratracheal treatment with LPS (1.5 mg/kg) and sacrificed after 4 h, researchers found that in anethole treatment group exerts a significant increase of numbers of mobile white blood cells macrophages and neutrophils, the first immune response to the infectious site.

Furthermore, the application of LPS also induced the production of inflammatory mediators such as matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) all systematic inflammatory cytokines in response to cellular damage and tissue injury.

Moreover, LPS also exhibited overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) observed in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in facilitated cellular cytotoxicity.

In the compared nontreatment group, injection anethole group demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory effect through decrease activities of proinflammatory factors without affecting the immune activity in protects against infection.

Additional analysis also found that the treatment group reduced acute lung injury caused by injection LPS through its antioxidants and induced production of host natural antioxidants in the body tissue.

The inhibited LPS results according to were attributed to anethole effect in suppressed the activation of NF-κB in signaling the production of inflammatory cytokines by blocking the initiation of IκB-α degradation by inhibited TRAF2 in the induction of inflammation through TNF receptor superfamily members and NIK, a key signaling molecule of the noncanonical NF-κB.

Interestingly, further investigation of anethole as an inhibitor of TNF-induced NF-kB activation (an early response) as monitored by electrophoretic mobility shift assay, by suppression of IkBa phosphorylation and NF-kB reporter gene, researchers also indicated that

* Anethole also suppressed TNF-induced activation of the transcription factor AP-1 in regulated gene expression in response to a variety of stimuli, including LPS application.

*c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) with function in response to stress stimuli, such as cytokines,
And

* MAPKkinase in signal inflammatory response through transmitting information from a receptor on the surface of the cell to the DNA in the nucleus of the cell.

* Application of anethole also suppressed TNF-induced both lipid peroxidation and ROS generation, through the stimulated production of natural antioxidants in the host and itself, resulting in balancing the ratio of antioxidant and ROS expression.

The illustration and differentiation were elite by the experiment in the application of TNF (100 pM) with the cells pretreated for 240 and 120 min with anethole, NF-kB activation was almost completely inhibited.

However, the inhibition decreased gradually with decreased pre-incubation time.

Taken together, fennel and its bioactive anethole may be considered as a functional food in reduced risk and treatment in acute and chronic inflammatory related-diseases through the properties like a pro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.
