The Possible Effects of Healthy Veggie Broccoli on Hypertension, Researchers Say

Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the arterial walls. In high blood pressure, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the circulation system. Over time, high blood pressure has been found to cause damage to the heart and arteries.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition characterized by persistent high blood pressure.

In the US approximately, one-third of adults have high blood pressure, affecting over 77 million people in the country.

Additionally, among adults aged 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.

High blood pressure is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.

High blood pressure is a chronic condition associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and chronic diseases such as kidney disease, leading to the onset of strokes and cardiovascular disease.

In other words, if you can control your diet, such as making changes to your lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and dieting with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

The cause of high blood pressure is a result hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), due to the slow progression of plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA) patients with blood pressure that is higher than 130 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) is considered to have hypertension.

Untreated chronic high blood pressure may induce complications of heart attack, stroke, and other health conditions.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

In finding a potential plant that processes anti-high blood pressure, researchers examined the broccoli protein hydrolysates' inhibitory activity in vitro and hypotensive effect in vivo.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Three ACE inhibitory peptides were isolated and identified as IPPAYTK, LVLPGELAK, and TFQGPPHGIQVER, and their inhibitory IC50 values were 23.5, 184.0, and 3.4 μM, respectively.

* LVLPGE and LAK, two novel peptides exhibited the highest ACE inhibitory activity associated with lowering hypertension with IC50 values of 13.5 and 48.0 μM, respectively.

* Moreover, the hypotensive effect of the peptides was assessed after oral administration to spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHRs).

Collectively, researchers said, "LVLPGE and LAK demonstrated a significant hypotensive effect in vivo. Protein from broccoli may thus constitute a potential antihypertensive peptide source".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood Red Cabbage Processes Anti-Bacteria Infection, Researchers Say

Infectious diseases are medical conditions caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi.
Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.

Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated with antibiotics.

Bacteria is a type of biological cell consisting of a single cell with a simple internal structure.

The most common diseases caused by bacteria include strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.

Infection occurs when the bacteria successfully invade the body and start to multiply. Most cases of infectious diseases caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.

And, most cases of infectious disease are transmitted by airborne you can get sick if you breathe into the air that carries infectious bacteria in air particles, vector-borne if you are stunk by the insect that the bacteria, and vehicle-borne if you are eating food or carrying the materials contaminated by the bacteria.

Most cases of bacterial invasion are met with the first line of immune white blood cells. In the active division of bacteria in the acute phase of infection, the immune system response activated the production of the proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all bacteria.

However, if the immune fails to kill off all the bacteria within the 3 - 8 weeks period, it then will adapt to the change, leading to chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

To find a natural wholefood for the prevention of infectious disease, researchers examined the B. oleracea L (red cabbage) anti-microbial activity.

In 22 pathogenic bacteria and fungi, B. oleracea L (red cabbage) demonstrated antibacterial (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli O157: H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium) and antifungal (Trichophyton rubrum and Aspergillus terreus) activities at a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC), respectively.

In Chemical analysis, the potent antimicrobial action from B. oleracea L (red cabbage) was attributed to the rich source of phenolic compounds, anthocyanins.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "This extract is potentially novel for future antimicrobials, inexpensive, and readily available at a large scale for pharmaceutical companies for further investigation and processing".

Taken altogether, red cabbage may be considered a natural antibiotic, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthy #Tomato/Lycopene the Anti Cancers Functional Food

Cancers are a class of diseases caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or organ in the body.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2017, over 200,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed and 80,800 patients died from the disease in the same year.

Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer accounted for about half of all cancer diagnoses and deaths.
Believe it or not, 1 in 2 Canadian adults will develop cancer in their lifetimes and 1 in 4 will die of the disease.

At the early stage, patients with cancer may not experience any symptoms due to the very small size of the tumor and the cancer is still on the surface in the inner lining tissues. However, at the late stage after colonizing the complete organ, cancer cells not can travel a distance away from the originated site to affect other healthy tissue and organ, they can also cause some related and specific symptoms accompanied by general symptoms associated with other types of cancer.

Cancer is classified by the followings* Size of the cancer

* Invasive or not

* Whether cancer has spread to the lymph nodes

* Whether cancer has spread to distant parts or organs of the body.

There are 4 stages of breast cancer in TNM rating (where T is referred for tumor size, N is referred for Lymph Node status, and M is referred for invasive or not)

Where
# T: Tumor Size is divided into four classes: T-1 is between 0 - 2 cms, T-2 is between 2 - 5 cms, T-3 is > 5cms, and T-4 is a tumor of any size growing into the chest wall or skin, including inflammatory breast cancer.
#N: No swollen nodes: N-0, some swelling but negative node (not cancerous): N-1a, swelling nodes and positive node (cancerous): N-1b, quite swollen and bunched together: N-2, quite swollen and near the collarbone: N-3.
# M: if no cancer cell is found: M-0, cancer cells found: M-1.

The stages of cancer are
* Stage 1T-1 tumor and clear lymph nodes with no evidence of spreading (M-0), or T-1N-0M-0.
* Stage 2
Stage 2 is the combination of a combination of T-1, T-2, or T-3 tumor, N-0. N-1a and N-1b but no spreading (M-0)
* Stage 3
Stage 3 is the combination of all T or N but no spreading (M-0)
* Stage 4
Stage 4 is the combination of T, N-1a, N-1b, N-2, N-3, and M-1

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of cancer with little or no side effect, researchers examined the effect of a novel strategy of formulating the lycopene-loaded whey protein isolate nanoparticles (LYC-WPI-NPs) ability for adenosine deaminase inhibition of the regression of the tumor with the percent lycopene entrapment in the range to 50 and 65%.

In the chemical release analysis, LYC-WPI-NPs enhanced the oral bioavailability of lycopene by controlling its release through the absorption in the lymphatic pathways.

According to the MTT-based colorimetric assay, LYC-WPI-NPs exerted significant cytotoxicity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells in vitro.

In an animal model-induced breast cancer, LYC-WPI-NPsd also demonstrated its prophylactic anticancer efficacy without causing the death of normal cells.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final paper, "Conclusively, it may quite reasonable that lycopene loaded protein nanoparticles are competent to improve the biopharmaceutical attributes of lycopene and demonstrated prophylactic anticancer activity, decrease tumor proliferation and increase the survival rate of treated animals".

In other words, LYC-WPI-NPs significantly enhanced the lycopene anti-cancer biopharmaceutic activity compared to oral administration as seen in an animal model.

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Potatoes (Solanum), Process a Strong Antioxidant Property

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating oxidative stress that causes damage to proteins, lipids, and cell DNA.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to their nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

There are 3 main types of antioxidants found in nature, including antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalases, antioxidants vitamins, that may be injected from dietary sources such as fruits and vegetables, including vitamins A, C, D, and E and antioxidant-phytochemicals found in the plant including second metabolites.

Potato is the genus Solanum and belongs to the family Solanaceae. It is a good source of protein and according to the statistic, the annual diet of an average global citizen is about 33 kg (72.6 Lbs) of potato. The root veggie now is growing worldwide in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits, thus its consumption is extremely variable and rapidly changing.

In finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the potential of peptide fractions isolated from dehydrated potatoes on intestinal epithelial cells (IEC-6) under oxidative and inflammatory conditions.

Based on the results of differentiation,* Peptide fractions demonstrated a significantly inhibit the pro-inflammatory protein expression such as tumor necrosis factor-α and cycloxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase.

* More importantly, the tested peptides also showed significant antioxidant activity by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) release induced from mitochondria, and nitrotyrosine formation

* Furthermore, the applications also increase the antioxidant response by heme oxygenase-1 and superoxide dismutase expression.

Additionally, the peptide fractions were able to significantly increase wound repair in IEC-6 induced by oxidative-inflammatory damage.

Collectively, researchers said, "The obtained results indicate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential of dehydrated potatoes at the intestinal level".

Taken altogether, potatoes may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cabbage Protects the Cell's Integrity Against Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
In other words, oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Long-term oxidative stress present in the body can cause protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

More precisely, exogenous factors, such as cigarette smoke, and endogenous factors, such as the oxidative burst from activated macrophages are some of the factors involved in the risk of oxidative stress.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

On findings of a natural whole for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of red cabbage anthocyanin (RCA)-enriched extract on H₂O₂ expression on HepG2 cells.

According to chemical analysis, all derivatives of cyanidin (268 ± 2 μg/mg) found in RCA, mainly with 19% nonacylated, 51% monoacylated, and 31% diacylated structures with ferulic, sinapic, p-coumaric, and caffeic acids exerted antioxidant activity against the oxidative stress induced by the injection of H₂O₂.

Furthermore, the application of RCA extracts markedly ameliorated cell apoptosis and improved viability.

Moreover, in another study, cabbage extract protected against H2O2-induced cell death and did not elicit any cytotoxic effects by suppressing ROS production and increasing the expression of antioxidant proteins (SOD-1, catalase, and GPx) produced by the host.

In oxidative stress-exposed H9c2 cells, the protective effects of cabbage extract also inhibited apoptotic responses and activation of MAPK proteins (ERK1/2, JNK, and p-38) involved in the resistance of apoptosis by preserving mitochondrial functions.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "cabbage extract protects against oxidative stress and suggests that it can be used as an alternative therapeutic strategy to prevent the oxidative stress in the heart".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be used as a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tomatoes Kill Bacterial Staphylococcus Aureus Against the Onset of Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a medical condition associated with the infection of the lung. In adults, the most common cause of pneumonia is bacterial infections such as Staphylococcus aureus.

Viruses or fungi also have been found to induce the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of pneumonia are persistent coughing with phlegm (mucus) fever, sweating, chills, and chest pain. However, depending on the types of pathogens that cause the infection.

In severe cases, pneumonia is life-threatening. Some patients at this stage also experience persistent shortness of breath due to severe inflammation in the air sacs of the lungs.

According to epidemiological studies, most cases of pneumonia are acquired from either hospitals or communities caused by people who have the disease.

Some researchers suggested people who have weakened such as elderly or immature immune systems such as babies and underage children are more prone to the disease.

Dr. Sanjay Sethi at the University at Buffalo SUNY wrote, "Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. Pneumonia in people whose immune system is weakened or impaired (for example, by AIDS, cancer, organ transplantation, or the use of certain drugs) is often caused by different organisms than those that cause pneumonia in healthy people".

In other words, people who are treated with chemotherapy drugs due to cancer or immune suppressants, and diseases associated with immunity are susceptible to pneumonia developing.

Most cases of pneumonia are treated with antibiotics. Depending on the condition, treatment may include medicine for reduced coughing, pain, and fever with an aim to improve the patient's quality of life.

If you are taking certain types of antibiotics for the treatment of pneumonia, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measures.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia, researchers examined the effect of naringenin found abundantly in tomatoes.

In the Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia model, naringenin protected the lung cells' integrity and viability by inhibiting the production of α-toxin.

Where α-toxin is an essential virulence factor found in patients with Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia.

Furthermore, at 16 μg/ml of naringenin, treatment organisms showed reduced expression of α-toxin significantly compared to the untreated group.

Moreover, in vivo, a mouse model of S. aureus pneumonia treated with naringenin demonstrated a significant effect in attenuating symptoms of lung injury and inflammation against infection.

In other words, naringenin acted as a natural antibiotic in preventing the overexpression of α-toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus through its antibacterial activity.

Based on the findings, Dr. Zhang Y, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "These results suggest that naringenin is a promising agent for the treatment of S. aureus infection".

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of naringenin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

2. Blend on high speed for about 1 minute or until the mixture is thick and the ice is well crushed. Add more green tea drinks if needed
3. Serve immediately

Cherries(1), ginger(4), and peppermint(7) may be the next combination of therapeutic ingredients as a pain reliever for the treatment of chronic pain in patients with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease.

Cherry, a fleshy drupe, is the fruit of many plants of the genus Prunus cultivated all over the world for commercial profit due to its health potential.

In a randomized double-blind crossover study of 58 non-diabetic patients, oral administration of cherry juice improved the Western Ontario McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, inducing symptom relief, including pain for patients with mild to moderate knee Osteoarthritis, through lowering the C-reactive protein CRP levels(1). According to the Oregon Health & Science University, the study of fifty-four healthy runners with ingesting 355 mL bottles of tart cherry juice twice daily for 7 days, during a strenuous running event can minimize post-run muscle pain(3).

Dr. Kuehl KS said, "Tart cherries appear to possess similar effectiveness in treating the inflammatory reaction seen in both acute and chronic pain syndromes encountered among athletes and non-athletes with chronic inflammatory disease")2) of that may be used as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient on prevention, treatment, and recovery of soft tissue injury and pain.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root is the genus Zingiber, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil, used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
In primary dysmenorrhea patients, ginger is effective in pain relief without inducing adverse effects and may be used as an alternative treatment for primary dysmenorrhea, according to the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences(4) and treatment of ginger in students with primary dysmenorrhea for 5 days also showed a statistically significant effect on relieving intensity and duration of pain, the Shahid University, the study suggested(5).
Furthermore, in osteoarthritic patients, Dr. Therkleson T said," ginger therapy activated a marked relief of osteoarthritis symptoms that progressively improved over the 24 weeks, with no negative effects reported. Ginger therapy needs to be considered by nurses caring for specific personality types with osteoarthritis"(6).

Peppermint is a hybrid mint with small purple or white flowers and downy leaves, in the genus Mentha, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to Europe. The herb has been used in folk medicine as an analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, decongestant, and agent and to relieve gas, nausea, and stomach pain due to irritable bowel, intestinal cramps, indigestion, infection, etc

According to the Translational Research Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders (TARGID), peppermint oil, with antispasmodics may be considered the first-line treatment for abdominal pain in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)(7).

Menthol, the cooling natural product of peppermint, according to the study conducted by Yale University School of Medicine, is widely used for the relief of acute and inflammatory pain in sports injuries, arthritis, and other painful conditions, through activating the methol-induced sensation of cooling(8).
Dr. Shen YH and Dr. Nahas R. said," Peppermint oil alleviates IBS symptoms, including abdominal pain" and "several complementary and alternative therapies can be recommended as part of an evidence-based approach to the treatment of IBS; these might provide patients with satisfactory relief and improve the therapeutic alliance"(9).

In the 76-year-old woman whose pain had been resistant to standard therapies, application of neat peppermint oil showed to immediately improve her pain with persistence for 4-6 hours after application of the oil(10).

Taking all together, People with Chronic Pain due to autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease should drink the smoothie as much as they can, depending on digestive and liver toleration.

Phytochemical Carotenoids Block the Onset of Colorectal Cancer in Patients with DICER1 rs3742330 Genotypeancer

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of organs.

The colon-rectum formed as a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaking down of certain materials in the feces into substances which of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is cancer located in the colon or rectum caused by the alternation of cell DNA. Most cases of colorectal cancer begin in the cells on the surface of inner ling tissue in either the colon or rectum, before multiplying to form a tumor.

Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.
The disease is also the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US,
101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in 2019.

Additionally, colorectal cancer will also cause the death of 51,020 Americans in 2019.

Overall, the lifetime risk of colorectal cancer developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) in men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) in women.

Besides adenocarcinomas, the common type of colorectal cancer originated in epithelium tissues and squamous cells that make up the bowel lining together with the gland cells, other types of colorectal tumors include* Carcinoid
Carcinoid is an unusual type of slow-growth neuroendocrine tumor in the hormone-producing tissue in the digestive system. the condition may look benign but can spread to other parts of the body as they grow

* Leiomyosarcomas
Leiomyosarcomas are a rare and resistant type of colorectal cancer and are generally not very responsive to chemotherapy or radiation. They are a malignant abnormal mass of tissue of smooth muscles of the colon, comprising between 5–10% of soft tissue sarcomas.

* Lymphomas
Bowel lymphomas are rare and more likely to start in the rectum rather in the colon. Many patients with lymphomas are diagnosed in the late stage and already spread to other organs.

* Melanomas
Melanomas are rare malignant tumors of cells that produce dark pigment. This type of bowel cancer usually originates from somewhere else and then spread to the bowel.

Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer, researchers investigated whether dietary lutein/zeaxanthin, the major compounds found in carotenoid intake affect colorectal cancer risk in patients with a DICER1 rs3742330 polymorphism.

The experiment included 923 colorectal cancer patients and 1,846 controls based on eligibility criteria, that answered the semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire and the DICER1 rs3742330 genotype.

Based on the returned questionnaires differentiation, the highest quartile of lutein/zeaxanthin consumption was inversely associated with colorectal cancer risk.

In genotype analysis, patients who carry the G allele (AG + GG) showed a significantly reduced colorectal cancer incidence compared to that AA carriers.
Furthermore, patients with G allele (AG + GG) along with high lutein/zeaxanthin consumption were markedly associated with a decreased colorectal cancer risk, particularly in rectal cancer compared to that AA carrier with low lutein/zeaxanthin intakes.

The results strongly suggested that carotenoids' major compounds lutein/zeaxanthin has a strong implication on the colorectal cancer risk in patients with the DICER1 rs3742330 genotype.

Dr. Kim J, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, " colorectal cancer risk was related to an interactive effect between dietary lutein/zeaxanthin intake and the DICER1 rs3742330 polymorphism".

Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #Tomato, the Natural and Potential Anti-Inflammatory Remedy, Researchers Say

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

In other words, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of the palette to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, in severe cases, particularly in people with a weakened immune system, the inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, leading to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Diseases associated with low-grade inflammation include diabetes and cardiovascular.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Dr. Roma Pahwa in the classification of chronic inflammation wrote, "Chronic inflammation is also referred to as slow, long-term inflammation lasting for prolonged periods of several months to years. Generally, the extent and effects of chronic inflammation vary with the cause of the injury and the ability of the body to repair and overcome the damage".

And, "(The causes of chronic inflammation are) Failure of eliminating the agent causing acute inflammation, ..., Exposure to a low level of a particular irritant or foreign materials,...An autoimmune disorder,... Recurrent episodes of acute inflammation,... Inflammatory and biochemical inducers"

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory diseases researchers examined the effect of tomato ketchup extracts and bioactive from tomato ketchup on human monocytes and vascular endothelial cells (HUVEC).

HUVEC selected for the study were pre-treated for 1 h with either individual bioactive (7.5 µM lycopene, 1.4 µM α-tocopherol, or 55 µM ascorbic acid) or a combination of these three compounds, or with the hydrophilic or lipophilic tomato ketchup extracts or with the two extracts combined.

According to the tested assays, tomato ketchup extracts significantly reduced gene expression and pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-8 in HUVEC after inducing inflammation.

Furthermore, levels of anti-inflammatory release were increased observed by the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

The effects were correlated with the reduction of IL-8 production in the presence of the test compounds and extracts.
In other words, lycopene found in tomato extract is one of the major bioactive compounds that induce the anti-inflammatory effect, and α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid appeared to strengthen the anti-inflammatory effect of lycopene.

In order to obtain more information about tomato anti-inflammatory activity, researchers analyzed the potential protective effects of phytochemicals in tomatoes on inflammation.

According to the nitric oxide (NO) assay, tomato extract exhibited an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264 macrophages.
Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were significantly decreased after the injection of tomatoes.

The efficacy of tomatoes was attributed to the bioactive compound RF52 in the inhibition of the production of these proinflammatory mediators.

Dr. Kim YI, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that RF52 from tomatoes may have the potential to suppress inflammation by inhibiting the production of NO or proinflammatory cytokines during the interaction between adipocytes and macrophages".

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered functional food for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cooked Tomato's Lycopene Protects Protein, Lipid and Cell Damage Against Oxidative Stress in Human Studies

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by overexpression of free radicals in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants caused by abundant free radicals and low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.

A free radical is an unstable atom with a single electron on the outermost ring. Given its nature, free radicals readily donate or intercept an electron from another atom, leading to a chain of the free radical cascade that cannot be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

The antioxidant is a stable atom with a function to inhibit oxidation, and comes either from dietary sources or produced by the body.

In contrast to general belief, free radical is also needed in moderated amounts for the function of the heart muscle to pump blood such as NO for vasodilation and increasing blood flow.

According to studies, in cancer, oxidative stress has been found to induce cytotoxicity used in chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer by killing cancer cells.

However, in a healthy person, oxidative stress is harmful because it not only induces cells lipid and protein oxidation but also causes the change of cell DNA, leading to diseases associated with oxidative stress including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Ozone, certain pesticides, cleaners, cigarette smoke, radiation, and pollution are some of the risk factors associated with the increased risk of oxidative stress.

Based on the oxidative stress theory of aging oxidative stress, oxidative stress is also the main culprit contributing to aging in humans.

Dr. Ilaria Liguori, the lead scientist said, "Aging is a process characterized by the progressive loss of tissue and organ function. The oxidative stress theory of aging is based on the hypothesis that age-associated functional losses are due to the accumulation of RONS-induced damages".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress researchers examined the efficacy of lycopene a carotenoid commonly found in tomatoes and tomato products.

A total of 23 healthy postmenopausal women, 50-60 years old, provided blood samples at baseline and following a one-month lycopene-depletion period according to the St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, ON, Canada. PARTICIPANTS AND STUDY DESIGN.
Compared to the blood sample before and after experiment samples, a one-month lycopene-depletion period diet showed a significantly decreased antioxidant profile including serum lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx).

Furthermore, the diet also depressed levels of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), significantly in the participants while increasing levels of lipid and protein oxidation.
In other words, a tomato restrictive diet increased the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress in postmenopausal women due to the increase of ROS and depletion of antioxidants in the tissues.

In order to reveal more information about tomato's effect on oxidative stress, researchers conducted a study to determine whether lycopene would act as an antioxidant to decrease oxidative stress parameters.
The study included a total of 60 postmenopausal women, 50-60 years old, following a 1-month washout without lycopene consumption,.

After a month, the participants were randomly divided into groups with 15 members each consuming either : (1) regular tomato juice, (2) lycopene-rich tomato juice, (3) tomato Lyc-O-Mato lycopene capsules, or (4) placebo capsules, twice daily for total lycopene intakes of 30, 70, 30, and 0 mg/day respectively for 4 months.

According to the tested assays, for 4 months significantly increased serum lycopene compared to placebo.

Moreover, the total serum antioxidant capacity (TAC) and decreasing lipid and protein peroxidation were found to increase substantially in the groups treated with consumed juice or lycopene capsules compared to the placebo group.

Taken altogether, tomatoes and their major bioactive compound lycopene may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Honey, the Best Natural Remedy for Chronic Otitis Externa With No Side Effects

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of acute otitis externa, according to studies.

Acute otitis externa is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the ear canal. Most cases of acute cute otitis externa are associated with the infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus due to improper cleaning.

However, people with seborrhoeic dermatitis caused by inflammation of greasy areas of the skin can also lead to infection of the ears.

The most common symptoms of acute otitis include itching, canal edema, canal erythema, and otorrhea.

Most cases of acute otitis externa are healed within days with proper ear drops. However, there is a rare case where the disease may take weeks or months to recover.

Chronic otitis externa shares the common symptoms of the acute form, accompanied by water retention and severe ear pain, and temporary loss of hearing, due to building up thick and dry skin that can build up inside the ear canal, leading to narrowing of the ear canal.

Untreated chronic otitis externa can cause deafness.

Besides sharing the risk factors with the acute form, otitis externa can also be caused by infection due to the long-term use of hearing aids and earplugs.

Unlike the acute form, most cases of otitis externa are treated with steroid drops in addition to antibiotics accompanied by oral intake of pain medications such as ibuprofen.

Generally, oral antibiotics are not recommended, however, if the infection has spread beyond the ear canal, oral antibiotics may be applied.

According to the statistics, otitis externa affects 1–3% of people in America a year and 95% of people's complaints of the condition are acute.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

The finding of a natural ingredient for the treatment of eczematous external otitis, scientists investigated the antibacterial potential of medical honey eardrops as a treatment of eczematous external otitis.

15 patients diagnosed with recurrent eczematous external otitis were selected and treated with medical honey eardrops for 2 weeks.

Honey treatment resulted in less discomfort and itching and decreased signs of eczema with no side effects, according to assays.

Although honey eardrops showed a strong in vitro inhibitory activity against all tested strains, it did not eradicate Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Honey eardrops also reduced the visual analog scale of ear complaints, and a score of eczema, and increased the eradication of bacterial infection. Most patients in the study, are satisfied with the use of honey eardrops for the treatment of their eczematous external otitis.

Dr. Henatsch D, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "The results of this preliminary study indicate a possible role of honey eardrops in eczematous ear disease".

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of eczematous external otitis, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Best Natural Treatment For High Blood Pressure with No Side Effects, Scientists Say

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a herbal remedy for normalizing blood pressure, according to studies.

Hypertension is a chronic condition caused by abnormally high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a condition of a cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

In high blood pressure individuals, due to the elevated blood pressure in your arteries, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the blood vessels.

In low blood pressure individuals, the reduced blood pressure in the arteries drops can cause the heart to pump blood at a slower rate than normal.

According to the standard guidelines, the levels of blood pressure is normal if it is more than 120 over 80 and less than 140 over 90 (120/80-140/90).

People with blood pressure lower than 120/80 are considered normal without being accompanied by symptoms of light-head or dizziness.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in the U.S. 29% or 100 million adults have hypertension during 2015–2016 and hypertension prevalence increased with age and was 33.2% among those aged 40–59 and 63.1% among those aged 60 and over.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers in the course of finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of high blood pressure investigated the safety and effect of intrapulmonary administration (by inhalation) of 60 % honey solution, 10% dextrose, or distilled water in normal or diabetic subjects.

Twenty-four healthy subjects, 16 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and six patients with hypertension were selected to participate in the study.

Twelve healthy subjects were subjected to distilling water inhalation for 10 min, and after one week they received inhalation of honey solution (60% wt/v) for 10 min. Another 12 healthy subjects received inhalation of 10% dextrose for 10 min.

Honey treatment showed a mild reduction of blood pressure compared to no change in another group.

From a time perspective, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was reduced by honey inhalation in hypertensive patients at 60 and 120 min.

After taking into account co and confounders, researchers said, "honey inhalation was safe and effective in reducing...elevated blood pressure in hypertensive patients".

Moreover, in order to obtain more information on honey antihypertensive activity, researchers investigated the aqueous extract obtained from the mixture of the fresh leaf of Persea Americana, stems, and a fresh leaf of Cymbopogon citrus, fruits of Citrus medica, and honey on ethanol and sucrose-induced hypertension in rats.

Rats included in the study were divided into eight groups of 6 rats each and daily treated for 5 weeks. The control group received distilled water (1 mL/kg) while rats of groups 2, 3, and 4 received ethanol 40 degrees (3 g/kg/day), 10% sucrose as drinking water, and the two substances respectively.

The remaining groups received additional sucrose and ethanol, the aqueous extract (50, 100, and 150 mg/kg) or nifedipine (10 mg/kg) respectively.

Group treated with ethanol and sucrose showed a significantly (p < 0.001) increased blood pressure and heart rate compared to distilled water-treated rats.

Chronic treatment of ethanol and sucrose also exerted significantly decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, observed by the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and elevated levels of oxidative stress observed by the stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) levels.

However, administration of the aqueous extract or nifedipine prevented all changes caused by chronic ethanol and sucrose, including the hemodynamic, biochemical, oxidative, and histological impairments.

The finding clearly suggested that aqueous extract including honey possesses antihypertensive activity by the improvement of biochemical and oxidative status, through its antioxidant property.

Taken altogether, honey used alone or combined with other herbs may be considered anti-hypertension functional remedies with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Tomato Apoptoses Liver Cancer Better Than of Doxorubicin and Camptothecin in Vitro

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cells growing disorderly and uncontrollably in our bodies.

Liver cancer is a chronic medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the liver tissues.

The liver is the largest internal organ that only filters out blood from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body, but also produces bile to aid digestion, build strong cell walls and vitamin D and steroid hormones.

The liver joined with the kidney and skin is considered 3 detoxed organs in the human.

Most common liver cancers are* Hepatocellular carcinoma, is a most common liver cancer accounting, accounting for 75 percent of all cases caused by the DNA alternation of hepatocytes, predominant liver cells.

Epidemiologically, primarily hepatocellular carcinoma has been found to metastasize to the pancreas, intestines, and stomach.

* Cholangiocarcinoma, also known as bile duct cancer, is caused by abnormal cell growth in the small, tube-like bile ducts in the liver, accounting to 10 to 20% of all liver cancer cases.

Out of many prevalent factors that cause the onset of liver cancer, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong impact to increase the risk of liver cancer.

Dr. Qiu-Ye Lan, the lead scientist wrote, "Healthy dietary patterns may prevent many chronic diseases and is emphasized by 2015 US dietary guideline, but it remains unclear which dietary patterns may be a benefit to prevention of primary liver cancer (PLC)"

And, "Our findings suggest that the UPDP (an urban prudent dietary pattern (UPDP)) and TCDP (traditional Cantonese dietary pattern (TCDP) )were associated with lower, whereas the MPFP with the higher, risk of PLC".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to discover healthy foods for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the effect of the tomato antiproliferative activities against human colon (HT29) and liver (HepG2) cancer cells.

Application of the tetrasaccharide tomato glycoalkaloid alpha-tomatine, the trisaccharide beta(1)-tomatine, the disaccharide gamma-tomatine, the monosaccharide delta-tomatine, and their common aglycon tomatidine showed better inhibition of liver cancer cell compared to the tested colon cell line.

Additionally, alpha-tomatine isolated from tomato at a concentration of 1 microg/mL demonstrated a greater effect against liver carcinoma cells compared to those of anticancer drugs doxorubicin and camptothecin

Furthermore, alpha-tomatine also inhibited normal human liver HeLa (Chang) cells without inducing any side effects.

Also in vitro, according to the tested assays,
* Alpha-tomatine isolated from green tomatoes induced liver cancer cells death compared to little inhibition of the cells by the three low-tomatine red tomato extracts.

* Alpha-Tomatine from tomato also was highly effective in inhibiting all of the liver cell lines, compared to little cell inhibition of ehydrotomatine, tomatidenol, and tomatidine.

Collectively, the results not only showed the susceptibility to destruction varies with the nature of the alkaloid and plant extract but also how phytochemicals in plants worked synergistically in cancer inhibition.

Dr. Friedman M, the lead scientist said, "These findings extend related observations on the anticarcinogenic potential of glycoalkaloids and suggest that consumers may benefit by eating not only high-lycopene red tomatoes but also green tomatoes containing glycoalkaloids".

Taken altogether, tomato processed with a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Cabbage Protects the Cells Integrity Against Oxidative Stress

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings of a natural wholefood for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of red cabbage anthocyanin (RCA)-enriched extract on H₂O₂ expression on HepG2 cells.
