Cruciferous Vegetables Reduces the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD)

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.

In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

Cardiovascular diseases are chronic diseases that refer to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world. According to statistics, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015.

In other words, anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, which causes damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

Hyperlipidemia and hypertension are the risk factors of the diseases.

According to the statistics cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.

Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.

According to statistics, heart disease is the second leading cause of death, claiming more than 48,000 lives every year.in Canada.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers the effect of sulforaphane against cardiovascular disease via Nrf2 activation.

According to the results of the experiment,
* Sulforaphane (SFN) is an ITC that exerted anticancer activity by both in vivo and epidemiological studies.
* SFN demonstrated strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in CVD.

* SFN activated NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) that serves as a defense mechanism against oxidative stress and electrophilic toxicants by inducing more than a hundred cytoprotective proteins, including antioxidants and phase II detoxifying enzymes.

Based on the results, researchers said, "the evidence from clinical studies and animal experiments relating to the potential mechanisms by which SFN modulates Nrf2 activation and protects against CVD".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of CVD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Western diet Is Associated with The Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

The Western pattern diet or typical American diet is a modern dietary pattern associated with a high intake of processed foods, red meat, processed meat, fried and refined foods, and high-sugar.

The Western pattern diet has also been found to induce chronic diseases. Dr. Hariharan D, the lead scientist wrote, "Characteristics of the Western diet that fueled the obesity epidemic may also impact kidney disease incidence and progression. Enlarging portion sizes over the past half-century have been accompanied by increased intake of protein, sodium, and processed foods while consumption of fruits and vegetables has declined".

And, ", the Western diet, characterized by high intake of red meat, animal fat, sweets, and desserts and low intake of fresh fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy products, increases risk of chronic diseases".

The results clearly suggested, if you are following a traditional diet with high fruits and vegetable and fewer in processed food, saturated and trans fat, and red meat accompanied with moderate exercise daily, you are at a substantially decreased risk of chronic disease, compared to those who follow the Western diet.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, triglycerides, and blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

In other words, if you process 3 of the aforementioned conditions, you are at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, most people with metabolic syndrome have never developed
CVD and diabetes.

Other than high blood glucose, most patients with metabolic conditions are asymptomatic.

Epidemiologically, aging, ethnicity, obesity, medical condition such as diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome are the most risk factors found in patients with the syndrome.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, researchers investigated the association between major dietary patterns and prevalence of metabolic syndrome in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance.

The cross-sectional study included a total of 425 subjects 35 to 55 y of age. According to the returned food-frequency questionnaire from participants,

* The Western pattern with a high in sweets, butter, soda, mayonnaise, sugar, cookies, the tail of a lamb, hydrogenated fat, and eggs was associated with greater odds of having increased triacylglycerol (odds ratio 1.76, 95% confidence interval 1.01-3.07) and blood pressure (odds ratio 2.62, 95% confidence interval 1.32-5.23).

* The prudent pattern with a high in fish, peas, honey, nuts, juice, dry fruits, vegetable oil, liver and organic meat, and coconuts and low in hydrogenated fat and non-leafy vegetables was associated with a prevalence of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (odds ratio 0.55, 95% confidence interval 0.31-0.96).

* The vegetarian dietary pattern with a was inversely associated with a risk of an abnormal fasting blood glucose level (odds ratio 2.26, 95% confidence interval 1.25-4.06).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Major dietary patterns were significantly associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome".

Taken altogether, People who follow the Western diet are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes comapred to other dietary patterns.

Monofloral Honey, a Potential and Natural Anti- Human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 Functional Food

Honey may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of HIV-1, some scientists suggested.

Human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 is the most widespread type worldwide that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to epidemiological studies, people who serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

Most people infected by the HIV virus may experience symptoms of fever, muscle aches, and joint pain similar to those of influenza in the early stage of the viral attacks.

At the final stage of the infection, the virus can weaken the immune system to the point that causes the onset of AIDS and induces more severe symptoms including the general symptoms of cancers accompanied by soaking night sweats, recurring fever, and persistent white spots or unusual lesions on your tongue or in your mouth.

Dr. Seth C Kalichman and colleagues in the infectious team, in the concern of the risk of HIV in people with multiple sexual partners in the examining the 209 HIV positive men and 291 HIV positive women recruited conveniently from HIV/AIDS support groups and antiretroviral clinics found that 63% and 309 (62%) participants were currently sexually active, of whom 247 (80%) reported only one sex partner in the previous 3 months and 62 (20%) reported two or more partners during that time".

Although the use of a condom may have some protective effects in the prevention of HIV transmitting disease, however, the team said, "Steady sex partners of participants with multiple partnerships were significantly less likely to be protected by condoms than steady partners of individuals with only one sex partner".

Dangerously, at the final report, the team wrote, "individuals with multiple sex partners were also significantly less likely to have disclosed their HIV status".

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the inhibition of human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 before they can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), researchers evaluated the anti-HIV-1 activity of eight different kinds of honey.

The tested Monofloral Iranian honey from eight floral sources was analyzed to determine their anti-HIV-1 activities as well as their effects on lymphocyte proliferation.

According to the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and high pure viral nucleic acid kit, 6 out of 8 monofloral kinds of honey from Petro selinum sativum, Nigella sativa, Citrus sinensis, Zataria multiflora, Citrus aurantium, and Zizyphus mauritiana flowers exerted a significantly inhibitory HIV-1 activity at different doses.

The half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) values of 6 out of 8 monofloral kinds of honey are 37.5, 88, 70, 88, 105, and 5 µg/ml respectively.

The monofloral Iranian kinds of honey from Astragalus gummier and Chamaemelum Nobile flowers had a weak anti-HIV-1 activity, compared to others.

The frequency and intensity of cluster of differentiation CD4 expression on Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) increased in the presence of all honey types, an indication of immune activity.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) are round nucleus peripheral blood cells consisted of lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, NK cells) and CD4 cells or T4 helpers play critical roles to send signals to other types of immune cells with a function to destroy invasive pathogens.

Treatment with monofloral kinds of honey from Z. multiflora and N. Sativa also increased the CD19 markers for normal and neoplastic B cells.

According to the spectroscopic analysis, monofloral kinds of honey from P. sativum, N. sativa, Z. multiflora, and Z. mauritiana flowers processed a potency to be anti-HIV-1 agents.

In-depth differentiation, researchers showed that the inhibitory effect of methylglyoxal is higher on the late stage of HIV-1 infection.

The chemical compound found to exert anti-HIV-1 activity was methylglyoxal.

Taken altogether, monofloral kinds of honey containing high amounts bioactive compound methylglyoxal may be considered a functional food for the prevention of HIV-1 infection and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of AIDs.

Cruciferous Vegetables Gobbles Up Melanoma Cells in Vitro

Skin diseases are conditions of skin damage and classified according to each pathogenic cause.

Most cases of skin disease are involved in allergens, irritants. However certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, and genetic preposition can also cause r skin diseases.

Recent studies suggested that a poor diet is also associated with the onset of skin diseases such as dermatological disease may be linked to systemic disease, and dietary changes may affect health outcomes, as in psoriasis.

Skin melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the alternation of the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. However, in rare cases, melanoma can also occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye.

Most cases of melanoma start in melanocytes on the skin before spreading to the nearby tissue. In the advanced stage, the cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the originated site to infect other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis, through the circulation of blood and fluids.

The most common sites of melanoma metastasis are the lung and breast.

According to the statistic, melanoma skin cancer is increasing and anticipated to continue to rise. In the United States, approximately 70,230 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed, causing the death of 8,790.

The causes of melanoma skin cancer are associated with the alternation of the pigment cells in the skin. Why some people are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not even share similar health conditions, family history, and ethnicity.

However, according to epidemiological studies, genetic mutation inherited from the parent, exposure to environmental toxins, and sun UV rays are the most common associated with the increased risk of melanoma skin cancer.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers investigated the effects of indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a natural anti-cancer phytochemical derived from cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli, as a new chemical scaffold of small molecule enzymatic inhibitors of NEDD4-1 on human cancer cell lines.

Where NEDD4-1 is a proto-oncogenic ubiquitin ligase for PTEN, a tumor suppressor that plays a critical regulator for multiple cellular processes. The gene is mutated or deleted frequently in various human cancers.

According to the tested assays,
* I3C's stable synthetic derivative 1-benzyl-I3C showed to directly inhibit NEDD4-1 ubiquitination activity.

* Furthermore, compared to I3C, which has an IC50 of 284μM, 1-benzyl-I3C was a significantly more potent NEDD4-1 enzymatic inhibitor with an IC50 of 12.3μM.

* The compounds 2242 and 2243, (the two indolecarbinol analogs with added methyl groups) result in a more nucleophilic benzene ring π system, further enhanced potency with IC50s of 2.71μM and 7.59μM, respectively.

* Most importantly, the indolecarbinol compounds inhibited human melanoma cell proliferation in a manner that generally correlated with their effectiveness as NEDD4-1 enzymatic inhibitors.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " I3C analogs represent a novel set of anti-cancer compounds for the treatment of human melanomas and other cancers that express indolecarbinol-sensitive target enzymes".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables consisting of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and five novel synthetic analogs may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of melanoma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Coffee and Coffee Caffeine, The Potential Ingredients in Reducing the Risk of Basal Cell Skin Cancer

Coffee caffeine consumption regularly is associated with ameliorated risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin, the Queensland Institute of Medical Research study suggested.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Basal cell cancer is the most common type of skin cancer characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis. Cancer rarely spread and kill but can cause significant destruction and disfigurement to the affected skin area and accounted for more than 90% of all skin cancer in the U.S.

In the study among 1,325 randomly selected adult residents of a subtropical Australian community collected in 1992, 1994, and 1996, returned food frequency questionnaires from participants showed a significantly lower relative risk in people with prior skin cancers by 25% with daily consumption of four cups of regular coffee.

For people without previous history of skin disease, consumption of neither caffeinated nor decaffeinated coffee regardless of amount intake expressed no risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin.

Dr. Miura K, the lead author said, " Among people with prior skin cancers, a relatively high caffeine intake may help prevent subsequent BCC development. However, caffeine intake appears not to influence the risk of SCC."

Also, in the evaluation of the effects of tea, coffee, and caffeine-related to early-onset BCC from data of 767 non-Hispanic Whites under age 40 in Connecticut. BCC cases (n=377) identified through Yale's Dermatopathology database and controls (n=390) of individuals in the same database, participants interview revealed combined regular consumption of caffeinated coffee plus hot tea expressed a strong inverse association of early-onset BCC.

According to the analysis, the risk of BCC was reduced by as much as 43% in this group compared to the nondrinking group.

Researchers at the study also indicated that the efficacy in reduced risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin from these 2 beverages may be attributed to the chemical component of caffeine.

Promisingly. in the support of caffeine administration in prevented squamous cells skin cancer development, the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, postulated the following results.
1. Caffeine intake from all dietary sources was inversely associated with BCC risk even for people who only consumed less than 1 cup of caffeinated coffee per month.
2. Women who consumed more than 3 cups/d had the relative odd risk ratio of 0.79, compared to 0.90 in men with the same cups intake.
3. Decaffeinated coffee consumption showed no association with decreased BCC risk.

The finding evidence expressed that coffee and coffee caffeine consumption has a significant effect in reduced risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin, particularly in people with previous skin cancer.

Cruciferous Vegetables Lowers the Risk of myocardial infarction in Patients with GSTT1*1 allele

Stroke is the third leading cause of death. Approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

Stroke is caused by the accumulation of cholesterol and other substances that build up the arterial walls. In other words, if cholesterol building up in the arteries is blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the body causing oxygen not to be delivered to the brain, leading to the death of some cells in the brain.

According to the statistics, every year, more than 790,000 people suffer a stroke, including 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Most cases of stroke occur in people over the age of 65.

Myocardial infarction is a severe and medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing local brain neurons to death. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential post disease complications.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

Depending on the severity of the acute infarction, in serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms, paralysis of the face, arm or leg, trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.

Although, there are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction. some researchers suggested an unhealthy diet may have a strong and negative implication on the onset of the condition.

On finding a potential remedy for the management of post-stroke, researchers examined the association between cruciferous vegetable intake and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) on glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) against coronary heart disease.

The study included a total of 2042 patients with a first acute nonfatal MI and population-based controls (n = 2042) living in Costa Rica, the area of residence, were genotyped for a deletion polymorphism in GSTM1 and GSTT1 and an Ile105Val substitution in GSTP1.

According to the food-questionnaire returned
* Compared with the lowest tertile of cruciferous vegetable intake, the highest tertile was associated with a lower risk of MI among persons with the functional GSTT1*1 allele (OR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.58, 0.84) but not among those with the GSTT1*0*0 genotype (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 0.83, 1.82) (P = 0.006 for interaction).
* Furthermore, the protective effect of cruciferous vegetable intake among those with the GSTT1*1 allele was greater for current smokers (OR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.36, 0.79) than for nonsmokers.

* More importantly, GSTP1 and GSTM1 did not modify the association between cruciferous vegetable intake and MI.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Consumption of cruciferous vegetables was associated with a lower risk of MI among those with a functional GSTT1*1 allele, which suggests that compounds that are detoxified by this enzyme contribute to the risk of MI.".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the management of myocardial infarction with patients with GSTT1*1 allele, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Coffee Caffeine Does Not Associate with Poor Child Cognition and Behavior

Epidemiological studies do not agree that maternal Caffeine Intake during pregnancy may have a negative impact on child cognition and behavior, a new study suggested.

Coffee, second to green tea is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Cognition and Behavior is a group of neuron functions involving sensation and perception, learning and memory, attention, mental imagery, conceptual presentation, language expression, emotion response, motor control,.....

In the study of examining maternal serum paraxanthine at <20 and ≥26 weeks gestation with the child's intelligence quotient (IQ) and problem behaviors at ages 4 and 7 years among 2,197 mother-child pairs, researchers showed that paraxanthine, a structurally related to caffeine.and caffeine's primary metabolite concentration has a significantly inverted effect at ≥26 weeks gestation with child's IQ at age 7 years.

And at <20 weeks, paraxanthine also expressed a linearly associated with internalizing behavior at age 4 years.

Interestingly, after taking into account a range of values applicable to most pregnant women, researchers indicated that coffee caffeine in contribution to serum paraxanthine concentration showed no significant effect in association with childhood IQ or problem behaviors.

In contrast to the healthy mothers, Women's reported coffee intake per day during pregnancy was associated with lower child's Behavior Rating Scale (BRS), a complete overview of child and adolescent concerns and disorders, ratings in anemic children. Even with the inclusion of other contributing factors and after anemic children given appropriate treatment, coffee consumption continuously showed Poor Child Cognition and Behavior.

Dr.Engle PL, the lead author said, " The effects of postnatal coffee ingestion in Guatemala were seen for sleep duration, but not for cognitive development. Prenatal coffee ingestion was negatively associated with Behavior Rating Scales".

Taking all together, coffee caffeine intake during pregnancy may not have any meaningful effect in association to childhood cognitive development and measurement of Behavior Rating Scales, excluding anemic children,

Localized Honey, the Best for the Treatment of Allergies with No Side Effects, According to Studies

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of allergies, according to studies.

Allergies are a faulty reaction of the immune system responses against harmful substances that enter the body.

Symptoms and diseases associated with allergy include sinus swelling, seasonal and returning allergies, hay fever, and nasal allergies.

Believe it or not, Penicillin, antibiotic medicine is the most common allergy trigger in drug allergies. 10 percent of people are allergic after using the medicine.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, more than 50 million Americans have experienced various types of allergies each year and 15 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.9 million children under age 18.

In other words, 1 in 13 children suffers from a food allergy. About 30 percent of children with food allergies are allergic to more than one food.

The findings strongly suggested that foods are the most common and major cause of allergic onset.

Dr. Ruchi S. Gupta and colleagues in the allergic team in examining the food allergies in children wrote, "Overall, estimated current FA prevalence was 7.6%,.The most prevalent allergens were peanut (2.2%), milk (1.9%), shellfish (1.3%), and tree nut (1.2%)".

And, "Among food-allergic children, 42.3% reported ≥1 severe FA and 39.9% reported multiple FA. Furthermore, 19.0% reported ≥1 FA-related emergency department visit in the previous year and 42.0% reported ≥1-lifetime FA-related emergency department visit, whereas 40.7% had a current epinephrine autoinjector prescription.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of allergies examined the honey effects in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR).

The prospective randomized placebo-controlled study included 40 AR patients divided equally into a case group and a control group. All the subjects received a daily dose of 10 mg of loratadine for 4 weeks.

The case group then ingested 1 g/kg body weight of honey daily in separate doses for the 4-week period. The control group ingested the same dose of honey-flavored corn syrup as a placebo.

According to the AR symptoms scored at the start, week 4, and week 8 of the study, at week 4, both groups showed progressive improvement in the symptoms, however, at week 8, only the case group showed continuous improvement in the symptom score.

The ingested honey group showed a significant improvement in individual AR symptoms after week 8 and the efficacy in reducing the symptoms persisted for a month after the cessation of the honey treatment.

The results suggested that honey processed certain chemical compounds that were not found in the corn syrup for the treatment of AR.

Some researchers suggested that long-term intake of raw honey can help to ameliorate allergy symptoms by regularly exposing to pollen, similarly to the allergy injection in desensitizing pollen-program.

If this result is true then only local honey can process the anti-AR symptoms compared to honey unlocalized pollen.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of AR symptoms, regardless of the types of honey, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Inhibit Menopausal Symptoms of Breast Cancer Survivors

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

The development of cancer can be divided into three different stages
* Initiation
Initiation is characteristic by irreversible mutation of DNA of a particular cell which does not undergo DNA repair (by enzymes) or undergoes faulty DNA repair, including gene deletion or insertion, gene slices, etc.

* Promotion
In the promotion stage, the mutation cells involve in uncontrolled growth and proliferation of mutated cells as it promotes the expression of its mutation gene and in its replication. In time these cells lose their normal abilities and just reproduce.

* Progression
In the progression stage, the cancerous cells invade nearby tissues and migrate to other tissues via lymph or blood

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissues. At the late stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away to infect other organs and tissues from the original site.

The study of bioactive green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) was found to decrease the progression of breast cancer cells with Her-2/neu overexpression, through many mechanisms.

Unlike general breast cancer which processes either receptors for estrogen or progesterone and/or receptors with a protein called HER2, triple-negative breast cancer is a form of breast cancer that does not share the aforementioned characteristics.

In other words, triple-negative breast cancer does not have receptors of estrogen or progesterone, or genetic preposition.

Compared to the malignant nature, triple-negative and basal-like breast cancers are highly invasive which can grow and spread quickly to other tissues and organs through lymph and blood.

Also compared to other breast cancer, with decreased risk after 5 years, triple-negative breast cancers have a substantially higher recurrent rate within 5 years after treatment.

Triple-negative breast cancer shares symptoms similar to those of breast cancer and risk factor except in the form of the genetic preposition.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the association between dietary intake of soy or cruciferous vegetables and breast cancer treatment-related symptoms among Chinese-American (CA) and Non-Hispanic White (NHW) breast cancer survivors.

The joint cross-sectional study led by the Georgetown University included 192 CA and 173 NHW female breast cancer survivors (stages 0-III, diagnosed between 2006 and 2012) recruited from two California cancer registries, who had completed primary treatment.

Based on the Patient-reported data on treatment-related symptoms and potential covariates collected via telephone interviews, * Soy foods and cruciferous vegetable intake ranged from no intake to 431 and 865 g/day, respectively, and was higher in CA survivors.

* Higher soy food intake was associated with lower odds of menopausal symptoms (≥ 24.0 vs. 0 g/day, OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.25, 1.03), and fatigue (≥ 24.0 vs. 0 g/day, OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.22, 0.84), particularly in NHW survivors only.

* Compared with low intake, higher cruciferous vegetable intake was associated with lower odds of experiencing menopausal symptoms (≥ 70.8 vs. < 33.0 g/day, OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.25, 0.97) in the overall population.

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the treatment of breast cancer survivors' menopausal symptoms and fatigue, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Coffee and Coffee Caffeine in Reducing the Risk of Breast Cancer Selectively

Recent studies suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine may have a potential effect in reduced risk and treatment of breast cancer, selectively.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the review of literature from database of PubMed with selection of 37 published articles, involving 59,018 breast cancer cases and 966,263 participants, suggested that
1. There is no significant association between coffee and coffee caffeine intake and breast cancer risk
2. Post menopause women drinking coffee daily and regularly have a reduced risk of breast cancer developing.
3. Women who are BRCA1 mutation carriers showed a positive risk of breast cancer from coffee intake

The study also indicated that for additional cup of coffee consumed risk of breast cancer decreased by 2% and 1% for every 200mg/day increment in caffeine intake.

Contrastively, in a case-control analysis on 1,690 women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation from 40 centers in 4 countries.to determine coffee and coffee caffeine intake against the risk of breast cancer, returned self-administered questionnaire. showed a significant correlation of coffee intake in the elevated breast caner risk.

Women with breast cancer in BRCA carriers who habitually drank 0, 1-3, 4-5 and 6 or more cups of coffee showed a relative risk odds ratio of 1.00, 0.90, 0.75 and 0.31, respectively.

The finding evidence of relative odd ratio suggested that risk of breast cancer was reduced in this group of women linearly to numbers of coffee and coffee caffeine consumed daily.

Dr, Jiang W, lead author said, " (According to the findings) women with BRCA gene mutation, coffee consumption is unlikely to be harmful and that high levels of consumption may in fact be related to reduced breast cancer risk"

Interesting, in the investigated the common A to C polymorphism in the CYP1A2 gene associated with decreased enzyme inducibility and impaired caffeine metabolism of caffeine to examine the risk of breast cancer in BRCA1 mutation carriers of 411 BRCA1 mutation carriers (170 cases and 241 controls) researchers at the University of Toronto found that risk of breast cancer decrease significantly by 64% in BRCA1 mutation carriers with at least one C polymorphism in the CYP1A2 gene but not in CYP1A2 AA group in compared to women who never consumed coffee.

Collectively, coffee and coffee caffeine may only benefit to certain ages and genes expression but harmful to the others. Further cohort studies are necessary to clarify these controversies..

Green Tea, the Best in Prevention and Treatment of Prostate Cancer in Clinical Diagnosis

Prostate cancer is a condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth with the possibility of spreading to the distant parts of the body.
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.

Green tea may be used as a functional food in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, a renowned institute study suggested

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine,or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick.

According to the Fu Jen Catholic University, New Taipei City, catechin nanoemulsion preparation showed the highest inhibition of growth of PC-3 tumor cells, with concentration being 15.4 μg/mL and 8.5 μg/mL

The inhibition of prostate cancer cell line is observed in cell cycle arrest by regulated proteins involved in cell cycle division, namely cyclin A, cyclin B, cyclin-dependent kinase 2, and cyclin-dependent kinase 1 expression and activated cell apoptosis and survival.

Dr. Tsai YJ, the lead author said, " catechin extract and nanoemulsion could induce apoptosis of PC-3 cells through decrease in B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) expression and increase in cytochrome c expression( in the induction of apoptosis) for activation of caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 (involved cell death)".

Furthermore, in the recruited 404 PCA cases and 395 controls from the same hospital who completed data on habitual tea consumption, including green, oolong, black, and pu'er tea regular green drinkers have a significantly reduced risk in prostate cancer development.

The review of the inverse relation of tea drinkers and risk of prostate cancer has shown explicitly:
1. total of 32 cases and 50 controls reported habitual green tea drinking, showing an adjusted OR of 0.60 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.37, 0.98).
2. A moderate excess risk was observed among the habitual pu'er tea drinkers (OR=1.44, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.91).
3. A significantly lower intake of EGCG was observed among cases (54.4 mg) than the controls (72.5 mg).

Additionally, the differentiation of 7 observational studies and 3 randomized controlled trials retrieved from Cochrane Library, PubMed, ScienceDirect Online, and hand searching. the database, also reveals an interest correlated incidence of PCa decrease with each 1 cup/day increase of green tea.

According to the study, "higher green tea consumption was linearly reduced PCa risk with more than 7 cups/day and green tea catechins were effective for preventing PCa".

Collectively, green tea consumption is associated inversely with the risk of PCA but the injection of a large amount of green tea supplement should be taken with care in prevented toxicity.

Healthy Food Tomato Inhibits Hepatic Steatosis in Vivo

Hepatic steatosis is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver.

In other words, if the intrahepatic fat of your liver is more than 5% of liver weight, you are considered to have hepatic steatosis. Over time, untreated hepatic steatosis can lead to liver metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, and advanced forms of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Epidemiologically, hepatic steatosis has been found to induce complications in patients with obesity, alcohol intoxication, and/or hepatic disorders.

There are several mechanisms involved in the accumulation of intrahepatic fat, including increased flux of fatty acids to the liver, increased de novo lipogenesis, and/or reduced clearance through β-oxidation or very-low-density lipoprotein secretion.

People who are obese, having the condition of insulin resistance or diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, rapid weight loss, using hepatotoxic medications total parenteral nutrition (TPN) are at the increased risk of hepatic steatosis.

Out of many prevalent factors involved in the onset of hepatic steatosis, some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades in the Western world may have a strong and negative impact that accelerates the incidence onset.

Dr. Michael D. Roberts, the lead scientist wrote, "Six weeks of WD feeding caused hepatic steatosis development as evidenced by the 2.25-fold increase in liver triacylglycerol content, but did not induce advanced liver disease (i.e., no overt inflammation or fibrosis)".

And, "sub-chronic WD feeding appears to increase hepatic steatosis development over a 6-week period but only induces select inflammation-related liver transcripts, mostly acute phase response genes. These findings continue to outline the early stages of NAFLD development prior to overt liver inflammation and advanced liver disease".

The results strongly suggested the risk of the Western diet on hepatic steatosis developing.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to discover healthy foods for the treatment of hepatic steatosis, researchers examined the effect of tomato consumption on biomarkers and gene expression related to lipid metabolism in rats with induced steatosis.

The study included 24 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (8 weeks old) randomly assigned to (n = 6 rats/group) four experimental groups, including NA (normal diet and water), NL (normal diet and tomato juice), HA (high-fat diet and water) and HL (high-fat diet and tomato juice).

According to the tested assays, before treatment of tomato, HA group fed high-fat diet-induced hepatic steatosis confirmed by the levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, an indication of liver stress and injury.

Tomato treated group showed a significant increase of levels of lycopene and its secondary metabolites in the livers of these animals, particularly in HL than in NL group, apparently due to higher absorption (63.07 vs. 44.45%).

Furthermore, tomato treated group protected the liver by alleviating oxidative stress through the reduction of isoprostanes in the urine observed by increased levels of antioxidant enzymes.

Moreover, levels of high-density lipoprotein were also increased in the HL group compared to the HA group.

Interestingly, overexpression of several genes related to lipid metabolism was also found in the HL group compared to nontreatment groups.

In other words, tomato inhibited the onset and progression of hepatic steatosis in high-fat diet mice by inhibiting liver oxidative stress and enhancing lipid metabolism.

Dr. Martín-Pozuelo G, the lead scientist wrote, "The consumption of tomato juice and tomato products reduced hallmarks of steatosis, plasmatic triglycerides, and very-low-density lipoproteins, and increased lipid metabolism by inducing an overexpression of genes involved in more efficient fatty acid oxidation".

Taken altogether, tomato may be considered a dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of hepatic steatosis, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea Shows a Strong Anti Obesity Activity in Vivo

Green tea is found to consist of an anti-obesity function, a recent study by a popular institute suggested.

Green tea, considered as a functional food, linking numbers of health benefits has been reported by several renowned research and studies. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. But adding a slice of ginger will do the trick.

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated over time. A person is considered obese if excess body weight relative to the height is over 30 in BMI index.

According to the University of the Punjab, Epigallocatechin gallate, a polyphenol found in tea plants exhibited anti obesity effect through modulation of thePPAR[gamma] pathway in metabolism involved fat cells/adipose tissues.

In an animal study, the chemical constituent stopped the adipogenic cell differentiation through different proteins and transcription factors in the expression of adipocyte formation which is considered as fat cell development in contribution to obesity.

Dr. Javaid MS, the lead author in the study said, "Docking analysis of PPAR gamma and epigallocatechin gallate demonstrated that epigallocatechin gallate binds with PPAR gamma at its active site and blocks its activity".

Also, in animal induced by high fat diet, green tea Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG),exerted anti obesity effects through reduced plasma glucose and alleviate complications of diabetes by attenuating advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation involved proteins or lipids expression.

Dietary EGCG tested in C57BL/6 mice induced by high-fat diet with or without ECGC for 17 weeks and compared to a control group placed on low-fat diet for the same period, also showed a significanty reduced weight gain, plasma glucose, insulin level, liver and kidney weight, which can be seen in obesity in compared control mice.

Importantly, green tea Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG fed mice novally decreased the levels of AGEs(advanced glycation end product) in both plasma and liver while inhibiting the receptor for AGE (RAGE) expression of activating Nrf2, antioxidant response and enhanced anti oxidative stress ratio of GSH/GSSG.

Other searchers opinionated the effect of green tea in reduced fat/adipose tissues accumulation in obese subject is a result of the pro-oxidant action of EGCG, in de activated cellular production of reactive oxygen species, through indication of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase in suppressed gene and protein expression of enzymes and transcription factors involved in adipogenesis and lipogenesis(fat and adiposed metabolism).

Taking together, green tea with all the phytochemicals may be used as anti obesity functional food to help control hyperglycemia, reduce weight, and alleviate diabetes complications.
