Cruciferous Vegetables Induce the Death of Bladder Cancer Cells

The bladder is a hollow elastic organ in the center of the lower abdomen that collects urine from the kidneys and excreted them through the urethra.

Bladder cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the bladder tissue due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of primary bladder cancer start on the cell on the surface of the inner lining. However, after growing large enough, the cancerous call can spread to other regions in the body through the circulation of fluids and blood.

According to the statistic. 90% of bladder cancer were diagnosed in people who are older than 55. and the average age of people diagnosed with bladder cancer is 73.

Every year, the disease causes over 17,000 deaths and bladder cancer is the eighth most common cause of cancer death in men.

Bladder cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects men twice as frequently as it affects women.

Usually, it starts from the lining of the bladder caused by several types of malignant growths of the urinary bladder cells.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of bladder cancer, long-term cigarette smoking use is considered a significant cause of the disease. Smokers are 4 to 7 times more likely to develop bladder cancer than nonsmokers.

However, most of the cigarette smoker has never developed bladder cancer.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers evaluated the diets rich in cruciferous vegetables, particularly broccoli on bladder cancer risk.

In vitro studies, isothiocyanates, the major chemical compound of cruciferous vegetables inhibited bladder cancer cell lines, induced cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis.

Furthermore, isothiocyanates demonstrated many mechanisms of anticancer activity at the steps of cancer initiation, promotion, and progression.

Moreover, isothiocyanates induced cancer cell death by targeting multiple pathways including the adaptive stress response, phase I/II enzyme modulation, pro-growth, pro-survival, pro-inflammatory signaling, angiogenesis, and even epigenetic modulation, according to multiple in vivo studies.

Collectively, researchers said, "Overall, both cell and animal studies support a potential role for isothiocyanates in bladder cancer prevention and treatment. Future studies are necessary to examine clinically relevant outcomes and define guidelines on ameliorating the bladder cancer burden".

Taken altogether, collard green consisting of isothiocyanates that may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Cabbage Processes Anti-Proliferative Activities in Vitro

Cancers are the class of diseases caused by alteration of DNA that initiates healthy cells to grow disorderly and uncontrollably.

At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect healthy cells of other tissue and organs.

Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases.

According to a statistic from the Canada Government, approximately 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease.

The most common types of cancer in Canada include lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers. And these 4 cancers are account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada.

Believe or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.

Depending on types of cancer, people with cancers may experience general and specific symptoms.

The American Cancer Society wrote, "Cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss. Because cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the body makes energy from food. Cancer can also cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these signs and symptoms" and " Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms that are not usually linked to cancer. For example, some cancers of the pancreas can release substances that cause blood clots in veins of the legs".

DNA alternation is the major cause of diseases.

Proliferation is a condition of rapid cell multiplication used by the cancer cells to grow indefinitely.

Normal cycle multiplication has a limited cell cycle division before replacing by the new cell.

In cancer cells, the cell cycle division is unlimited

In cancer, antiproliferative activities is a process to inhibit the growth of cancer cells

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the heterodimeric 13.8 kDa napin-like polypeptide that has previously been isolated from Chinese cabbage (Brassica parachinensis) seed on leukemia (L1210) cells.

According to the tested analysis, the selected compound stimulated nitrite production by mouse peritoneal macrophages against the tested cells.

In other words, polypeptide blocks the cell cycle division activity by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation.

Furthermore, the tested compound also stimulated the immune macrophages to reduce the viability of leukemia (L1210) cells through its immunomodulatory activity.

More precisely, the heterodimeric 13.8 kDa napin-like polypeptide processes a strong anti-cancer cell proliferative property.

Taken altogether, cabbage contains high levels of phytochemicals which process anticancer cell proliferative activities, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Kimchi (Fematneted Cabbage) Reduces the Risk of Colorectal Cancer

Colorectum formed part of the secretory system including the large intestine and the rectum is the second part of the digestive system involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

The colon formed part of the large intestine plays a critical role in re-absorbing fluids and processing waste products from the body for elimination.

The colon consists of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon

The rectum or the part of the large intestine nearest the rectum plays a temporary storehouse for feces.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon or rectum.

Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining in the colon and rectum, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through proliferation.

Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progresses cancer in a predictable way.

The disease is more common in people over the age of 50. Regular colonoscopy after the age of 50 is valuable to detect the disease in the early stage, thereby increasing the rate of survival.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer, including cancer in the colon or rectum is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States.

In 2019, approximately 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.

The 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%. Sadly, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the prevention of cancer, researchers examined the effects of commercial kimchi (CK), standardized kimchi (SK), cancer-preventive kimchi (CPK), and anticancer kimchi (ACK), on colorectal carcinogenesis in mice.

Male BALB/c mice induced colon cancer with a single intraperitoneal injection of azoxymethane (AOM, 10 mg/kg body weight) and subsequent treatment with 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water for 7 days for two cycles.

According to the experimental analysis.
* Treatment with the methanolic extracts from different kimchis, particularly 1.89 g/kg of ACK, significantly increased colon length, decreased the ratio of colon weight/length, and resulted in the lowest number of tumors compared with the other kimchi-treated groups.

In other words, the kimchi extract protected the colonic cells against the alternation of DNA.

* Injection of ACK was able to suppress AOM- and DSS-induced colonic mucosal damage and neoplasia.

* ACK also significantly decreased the mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IFN-γ) as well as the mRNA and protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) to induce protein, lipid, and cell DNA damage.

* Mote importantly, kimchi extract enhanced the tumor-suppressive genes on AOM- and DSS-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in the BALB/c mice.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " The anticancer effects of ACK were particularly potent. Thus, it is possible that the health-promoting sub-ingredients added to ACK might be used to prevent colon carcinogenesis in humans".

Taken altogether, cabbage may process anti colorectal activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Banana, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Diarrhea

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

Diarrhea is a condition of frequent bowel movements with three loose or liquid each day. A prolonged period of diarrhea may result in dehydration due to fluid loss.

Infections by bacteria such as Salmonella or Escherichia coli are the most common causes of acute diarrhea. Patients with acute diarrhea usually are recovered within a week or 2 with or without medication.

However, patients with some bowel diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease also frequently experience chronic conditions, which can not be cured unless the diseases are treated.

In some cases, chronic frequent and severe diarrhea can be a sign of intestinal disease or a functional bowel disorder.

The most common symptoms of diarrhea include loose, watery stools. abdominal pain and gastrointestinal discomforts. In the severe case, patients may also experience symptoms of fever and blood in the stool.

Some researchers suggested that symptoms of diarrhea accompanied by blood in the stool is also a sign of colon cancer.

Dr. Jia Cai, the lead scientist at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, in the differentiated the incidence of colon polyps, cancer, and colitis for the chronic abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, and constipation suggested that there is no significant difference was found in the positive rate of colon polyps, cancer and ulcerative colitis among these 2 groups divided by symptoms.

The team continued, "The incidence of colon polyps, cancer, and colitis for chronic abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, and constipation group is 20.8%, 57.1%, 42.9% respectively. The incidence of colon polyps and cancer increases with age. Among the age groups 13-39 years old, 40-59 years and > 60 years, the incidence is 7.9%, 13.6%, 22.4% respectively".

Therefore, if you have diarrhea with symptoms of chronic abdominal pain, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colon polyps, cancer, and ulcerative colitis.

Most cases of acute and chronic diarrhea can be treated successfully by natural whole foods and herbal remedies with no side effects.

On finding a natural source with no side effects for the treatment of diarrhea associated with enteral feedings remains a problem for clinicians, researchers evaluated the effects of flakes in controlling diarrhea in critically ill patients receiving enteral feedings.

The study includes 31 patients with diarrhea and receiving enteral feedings randomized to receive either banana flakes or medical treatment for diarrhea.

Both banana flakes and medical treatments reduced the severity of diarrhea in critically ill tube-fed patients.

Over the course of treatment, the banana flake group scored diarrhea mean of 21.64 +/- 7.81 compared to 25.41 +/- 9.76 to the medical group. Both groups achieved similar levels of nutrition support.

The banana flake group had less diarrhea clinically, with 57% of the subjects diarrhea free on their last study day as opposed to 24% of the medically treated subjects.

This occurred despite a threefold increase in the number of patients testing positive for Clostridium difficile toxin in the banana flake group.

Dr. Emery EA, the lead author said, " banana flakes can be used as a safe, cost-effective treatment for diarrhea in critically ill tube-fed patients".

Moreover, in order to understand the anti-diarrhea effect of banana, researchers evaluated the therapeutic effects of green banana or pectin in children with persistent diarrhea.

The double-blind trial, 62 boys, age 5-12 months, were randomly given a rice-based diet containing either 250 g/L of cooked green banana (n = 22) or 4 g/kg pectin (n = 19) or the rice-diet alone (control, n = 21), providing 54 kcal/dL daily for 7 days.

The results of stool analysis showed that
* Most children (60%) had no pathogens isolated from stools, 17% had rotavirus, 5% Vibrio cholerae, 4% Salmonella group B, and 11% had enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infections.

* By day 3 posttreatment, significantly (P < 0.001) more children recovered from diarrhea receiving pectin or banana compared to control, and by day 4, these proportions correspondingly increased to 82%, 78%, and 23%, respectively.

These results strongly indicated green banana and pectin significantly reduced amounts of stool, oral rehydration solution, intravenous fluid, and numbers of vomiting, and diarrheal duration.

Dr. Rabbani GH, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Green banana and pectin are useful in the dietary the management of persistent diarrhea in hospitalized children and may also be useful to treat children at home".

In support to the above results, the Hospital Universitario de Maracaibo strongly suggested that green plantain showed to be effective in the dietary management of persistent diarrhea, in a prospective, in-hospital controlled trial, two different treatments were administered to a sample of 80 children of both sexes, with ages ranging from 1 to 28 months.

Taken altogether, green banana may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diarrhea with no side effects

Papaya, in the Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, according to studies.

Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.

During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off microorganisms.

However, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain to the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation to the affected tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off the foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involved immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air, the increase in age, being obese or obesity, low sex hormone production, sleep disorder, and diet.

The Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset Solna study suggested that cigarette smoking is emerging as a strong risk factor in the otherwise unknown etiology of chronic inflammatory diseases. The risk of nicotine smokers showed a substantial increase in the risk of chronic inflammatory diseases compared to ever-nonsmokers.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Chemical constituents
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.

With an aim to investigate the therapeutic potential of fruit and vegetables in the inhibition of inflammation, with no side-effects and the whole foods additive and synergistic benefits, researchers at the Universiti Putra Malaysia, examined the role of papaya in mediating inflammatory responses.

On cells of healthy individuals, according to the flow cytometry methods, injection of the fruit significant inhibited the overexpression of IFN-γ(+), a cytokine that is critical for innate and adaptive immunity and CD4(+), in the activation of the cells of the innate immune system, B-lymphocytes, cytotoxic T cells.

The application also showed to increase the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines which play a critical role in reducing the risk of inflammation.

These results suggested that papaya suppressed the pro-inflammatory cytokines through its anti-inflammatory response mediated through Tregs, a specialized subpopulation of T cells that act to suppress the immune response.

In other words, papaya modulates the systematic immune response through a set of mechanisms in the acute phase of infection.

Furthermore, on finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment for patients with sepsis, a serious unbalanced hyperinflammatory condition, researchers evaluated the effect of mangiferin (MF), a natural glucosyl xanthone found in both mango and papaya.

Application of mangiferin (MF) was found epidemiologically to attenuate cecal ligation and puncture-induced mortality and acute lung injury (ALI), by reduced systemic and pulmonary inflammatory responses.

In Sepsis patients, pretreatment with MF inhibits sepsis-activated mitogen-activated protein kinases which play a critical role in directing cellular responses to a diverse array of stimuli, and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells signaling (NF-κB) associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokine for cell survival.

These actions indicated that pretreatment with MF inhibits the production of proinflammatory mediators associated with immune responses.

In the tested animal, MF dose-dependently exhibited the expression and activity of heme oxygenase (HO)-1, a gene that plays a critical role in the prevention of vascular inflammation. in the lung of septic mice.

Dr.Gong X, the lead scientist said, 'MF attenuates sepsis by up-regulation of HO-1 that protects against sepsis-induced ALI through inhibiting inflammatory signaling and proinflammatory mediators", after taking into account co and confounders.

Interestingly, in the evaluated fermented papaya preparation, a functional food supplement, researchers at the Touro College of Pharmacy also found that the fermentation exhibited anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunostimulatory (at the level of the mucous membrane), through a set of bioactive compounds found in the fruit.

Taken altogether, papaya may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of the diseases associated with chronic inflammation.

Strawberries, the Fruits That Kill 100% of Breast Cancer Cells in Vivo and Vitro, Scientists Say

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a type of irregular cell growth that starts either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk in the breast.

There are also rare cases, that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast.

In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone. The risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

The causes of breast cancer are unknown. Researchers do not know, people with the same health conditions and similar family history, some are more susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.

However, an increase of aging, history with breast conditions, such as previous breast cancer, breast density, use of hormone estrogen therapy, overweight and obese, and excessive alcohol consumption are some major risk factors that can elevate the development of breast cancer.

Furthermore, genetic mutation of certain inherited from the parent such as gene BRCA1 and BRCA2 are also the prevalent risk factors of breast cancer. There is an estimation that 33% of women who carry a harmful mutation in PALB2 will develop breast cancer by age 70 years.

According to the article posted by the National Institute of Health, " Several different tests are available. Some tests look for a specific harmful BRCA1 orBRCA2 gene mutation that has already been identified in another family member. Other tests check for all of the known harmful mutations in both genes. Multigene (panel) testing uses next-generation sequencing to look for harmful mutations in many genes that are associated with an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, at the same time".

If you have a family history of genetic mutation involved breast cancer, please make sure that you have them checked to rule out the possibility.

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongs to the family Roseaceae.

The fruit has been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

Epidemiological studies strongly agree that consumption of berry fruits, including strawberries have beneficial effects on human health and reduces the risk of chronic diseases, including breast cancer.

According to the Indian Institute of Science which conducted the experiment to examine whether a methanolic extract of strawberry (MESB) fruits processes anticancer activity in leukemia (CEM) and breast cancer (T47D) cell lines ex vivo, and its cancer therapeutic and chemopreventive potential in mice models,
* Mice bearing breast adenocarcinoma with MESB treated by the extract blocked the proliferation of tumor cells in a time-dependent manner.

* Application of the extract also increases lifespan in the cancer-bearing animal model.

* MESB treatment affected tumor cell proliferation by activating apoptosis and did not result in any side effects

* Finally, MESB treatment also induces the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis by activating p73 in breast cancer cells, caused by the mutation of tumor suppressor gene p53.

These results revealed that strawberry fruits possess both cancer preventive and therapeutic values.

Additionally, in the study to test for anti-breast cancer activity in extracts of six popularly consumed berries--blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry and strawberry conducted by the University of California, researchers found that strawberry and other berry extracts exert their ability to inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 at concentrations ranging from 25 to 200 micro g/mL.

Moreover, researchers also discovered the apoptosis rate of breast cancer cell killing are increased with increasing concentration of the extract. These findings suggested that strawberry extract may have the potential to kill 100% of the breast cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner.

In comparison to other extracts, black raspberry and strawberry extracts showed the most significant pro-apoptotic effects against breast cell lines.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of strawberry anti-breast cancer possibilities.

Papaya, The Fruit Which inhibits the Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

Scientists may have found a whole fruit with a potential in inhibiting the overexpression of inflammation caused by the acute and chronic phases of infection, some studies suggested.

Inflammation is a natural systematic immune response in activating the production of the inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage or injury

However, overexpression of noninflammatory agents activity in a prolonged period can damage the healthy nearby cells and damage the cells in the affected region. In severe cases, this action may lead to cell apoptosis, causing abnormal scars formation that damage the infected organs.

Many chronic diseases, such as cirrhosis are the results of liver scars formation caused by excessive alcohol drinking and infected by hepatitis viruses.

Some researchers suggested that anti-inflammatory cytokines under a normal condition at the acute phase of infection can also switch to pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Opal SM, in the elevated function of anti-inflammatory cytokines, wrote, "The anti-inflammatory cytokines are a series of immunoregulatory molecules that control the proinflammatory cytokine response. Cytokines act in concert with specific cytokine inhibitors and soluble cytokine receptors to regulate the human immune response".

These result suggested that anti-inflammatory cytokines also act according to the stimulation of the immune system.

Chronic inflammation is a condition that can last for months, sometimes years, in which the immune system has a failure to eliminate all microorganisms, in the acute inflammation.

Some chronic inflammations also are the results of autoimmune disorder, caused by the immune system attacks normal healthy tissue, by mistaking them for pathogens that cause disease.

Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.

In the findings of a natural ingredient to reduce the economic burden for healthcare systems, with a high mortality and limited treatment in sepsis patients, a hyperinflammatory condition, researchers at the Chongqing Medical University launched an investigation to evaluate whether mango and papaya process anti hyperinflammatory effect against sepsis.

Mangiferin (MF), a natural glucosyl xanthone found in both mango and papaya showed a significant effect in attenuating the cecal ligation and puncture-induced mortality and acute lung injury (ALI), through reducing the systemic and pulmonary inflammatory responses.

Further analysis, the function of the isolated compounds from the experimental fruits, exerted the anti-inflammatory functions in inhibiting production of proinflammatory mediators through a set of actions including deactivated sepsis-activated mitogen-activated protein kinases and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer in stimulating the pro-inflammatory production.

Additionally, application of mangiferin (MF), also inhibited the levels of free radicals and increased the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a Nrf2-regulated gene that plays a critical role in the prevention of vascular inflammation found in the lung of septic mice.

Dr. Gong X, the lead author, after taking into account co and confounders said, "MF attenuates sepsis by up-regulation of HO-1 that protects against sepsis-induced ALI through inhibiting inflammatory signaling and proinflammatory mediators:
Interestingly, in the reaffirm the potency of fermented papaya preparation (FPP) (a product of yeast fermentation of Carica papaya Linn) and a food supplement, in chronic and degenerative disease conditions (such as thalassemia, cirrhosis, diabetes and aging through modulating the immunological, hematological, inflammatory, vascular and oxidative stress damage parameters, researchers found that

* Fermented papaya preparation (FPP) does not cause a genotoxic effect when exposed to HepG2 cells nor and the PC12 cells.

* Application of exerts a strong effect in reducing levels of free radicals and increasing antioxidants by balancing the ratio of antioxidants produced by the host tissue and ROS.
Thus, decreasing the levels of oxidative stress caused by overexpression ROS in stimulating the onset of cell damage and inflammation, which have a strong implication in causing a variety of cancers, diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular dysfunctions, neurodegenerative disorders (such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease), exercise physiology (including performance sports) and aging.

These results suggested that fermented papaya and its bioactive compound may be considered functional food used conjunction with conventional medicine for prevention and treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases.

However, additional data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of fermented papaya and its bioactive compound during the course of the inflammation will be necessary to complete the picture of papaya anti-inflammatory possibilities.

Avocado, the Best Fruit for Skin health

Researchers may have found a whole fruit for the promotion of skin health with no side effects, according to studies.

Skin, a large organ of the body protects our tissue and organs against the invasion of pathogens and fluid loss.

There are many causes of skin damage. Sun exposure is the most common cause of skin damage. Other causes of skin damage include smoking cigarettes, drinking too much alcohol, extreme temperatures, and exposure to toxic chemicals and pollutants in the air outside.

Some researchers suggested that free radicals bombard our bodies daily are also associated with skin damage in the modern world.

Free radicals are unstable molecules with the unpaired electron on the outer ring. In order for them to become balanced, free radical either donates or intercept an electron from another stable molecule, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until the outer ring election is paired or inhibited by antioxidant.
In fact, free radical formation occurs continuously in the cells as a consequence of both enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions, they can be generated by our bodies such as the process of metabolism and exogenous sources such as pollution, alcohol, tobacco smoke.

Free radicals can affect our skin in different ways, including the alternation of the DNA, damage of lipid membrane, collagen structures, and inducing photoaging and cancer.

Dr. Borut Poljšak, in the study "Free Radicals and Extrinsic Skin Aging" wrote, "Extrinsic skin damage develops due to several factors: ionizing radiation, severe physical and psychological stress, alcohol intake, poor nutrition, overeating, environmental pollution, and exposure to UV radiation (UVR)". and

"The only protection of our skin is in its endogenous protection (melanin and enzymatic antioxidants) and antioxidants we consume from the food (vitamin A, C, E, etc.)".

These results suggested that although free radicals can induce the early onset of skin damage and aging, providing our body with enough antioxidants from the food sources is the best way to counter the process.

Avocado is a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world. It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

On finding a natural ingredient or essential oil that has a potential effect on skin health without inducing any side effects, researchers explored the effects of various avocado oils on collagen metabolism.

In skin rats fed diets containing 10% (w/w) of the tested oils, researchers found the akin protective effects were totally depended on the types of avocado oil.

Rats fed the unrefined avocado oil extracted with hexane from the intact fruit, including unsaponifiable or the avocado seed oil, showed a significant increase in soluble collagen content in skin, though total collagen content was not affected.

The increased soluble collagen content was attributed to the inhibition of lysyl oxidase activity whose increment is associated with the oxidative stress induced by chronic exposure to skin harmful substances.

The active factor which protects skin health was found to be present in the unrefined avocado oil and probably originated from the avocado seed, observed by the collagen metabolism which is affected only by fractions containing lipids fraction from the seed.

In order to illustrate the effects of avocado oil on skin health, researchers evaluated the wound-healing activity of a semisolid formulation of avocado oil, SSFAO 50%, or avocado oil in natural, on incisional and excisional cutaneous wound models in Wistar rats.

On the 14 days of application on the wound, 50% SSFAO or avocado oil demonstrate a significant increase in percentage wound contraction and reepithelialization, compared to the petroleum jelly control.

The treatment group also displayed the increase in anti-inflammatory activity, density of collagen, and tensile strength, compared to control groups.

This efficacy of the 50% SSFAO or avocado oil was attributed to the contents of the bioactive compounds, oleic fatty acid (47.20%), followed by palmitic (23.66%), linoleic (13.46%) docosadienoic (8.88%), palmitoleic (3.58%), linolenic (1.60%), eicosenoic (1.29%), and myristic acids (0.33%).

Dr. de Oliveira AP, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "When used in natural or in pharmaceutical formulations for topical use, avocado oil can promote increased collagen synthesis and decreased numbers of inflammatory cells during the wound-healing process".

In skin exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, unique lipid molecules, polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFA), extracted from avocado, reduced significantly UV-induced cellular damage, through increasing cell viability, decreased the secretion of IL-6, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, and PGE(2) in mediated the inflammation process.

Taken altogether, avocado processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the promotion of skin health without inducing any side effects

Honey Protects the Breast Cells integrity Against the Onset of Breast Cancer

Scientists may have found a sweet whole food which processes a strong effect in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, according to some studies.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

In the early stage, most patients with breast cancer may experience lumps on the breast or surrounding the breast.

However, breast skin irritation or dimpling, nipple pain, nipple retraction (turning inward), redness and scaliness that cannot be healed within 3 weeks are also the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

At the later stage, after colonizing most parts of the breast, the breast cancer cells may travel a distance far the way to infect other healthy cells and tissue.

In Canada, according to the statistic, 11% of women will develop breast cancer by the time they reach 90 years of age.

Just about 20% of breast cancers in Canada are diagnosed in women under 50, while almost 30% are diagnosed in women over 70 years of age.

These results suggested that the most common risk factor to fuel the onset of breast cancer is the increase in age.

The concern of the increasing number of studies indicates that the strength and even direction the association between breast cancer and established risk factors differ according to the woman's age when she develops the disease, Dr. Tryggvadóttir L, the lead scientist. according to the result of the study of a cohort of 80.219 women attending population-based cervical and breast cancer screening in Iceland, 1120 cases were identified, aged 26-90 years at diagnosis and 10,537 controls, individually matched to the cases on birth year and age when attending wrote at the final report, "age at diagnosis should be taken into account when studying the effects of breast cancer risk factors".

Sadly to let you know that 60% of women who carry the genetic mutation of gene BRCA1 and 2 have breast cancer developed before the age of 70.

Other risk factors associated with the onset of breast cancer are reproductive history having a dense breast, personal and family history, previous intake of the drug diethylstilbestrol (DES), previous radiotherapy.

Regardless of all risk factors, women breast self-examinations are still the most important methods to have breast cancer diagnosed early and increase the years of survival.

According to the worldwide statistic, the 5 survival rate of the early stage of breast cancer is 100%.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In finding natural compounds in cancer therapy, researchers at the United Arab Emirates University conducted an experiment to test the underlying mechanism and molecular targets of manuka honey (MH) on proliferation, invasiveness, and angiogenic potential were investigated using two human breast cancer cell lines, the triple-negative MDA-MB-231 cells and estrogen receptor-positive MCF-7 cells, and the non-neoplastic breast epithelial MCF-10A cell line.

Infection of MH at concentrations of 0.3-1.25% (w/v) induced a dose-dependent inhibition of the proliferation of MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, but not MCF-10A, cells.

At higher concentrations (>2.5%), MH was found to be generally deleterious to the growth of all three cell lines.

MH induced apoptosis of MDA-MB-231 cells through activation of proteins associated with the cell death programming and cancer cells apoptosis correlated with a loss of proteins associated with cancer cell proliferation.

Furthermore, low concentrations of MH (0.03-1.25% w/v) induced a rapid reduction in tyrosine-phosphorylated STAT3 (pY-STAT3) involved in cell growth and division in MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells.

The maximum inhibition of pY-STAT3 was observed at 1 h with a loss of >80% and coincided with decreased interleukin-6 (IL-6) production.

These results suggested manuka honey (MH) inhibits breast cancer cell lines through many different mechanisms

In a total of 50 nulliparous female Sprague-Dawley rats were grouped as follows: Group 0 (healthy normal rats control), Group 1 (negative control; untreated rats), Groups 2, 3 and 4 received daily doses of 0.2, 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg body weight of TH, respectively. The rats in groups 1, 2, 3, 4 were induced with 80 mg/kg of 1-methyl-1-nitrosourea (MNU) to examine the effects of Tualang honey (TH) against breast cancer.

The TH-treated rats showed a reduction of tumor progression (mean 75.3 days versus 51.5 days) compared to control.

The incidence (mean 76.6% versus 100%); the multiplicity (mean 2.5 versus 4 tumor masses per rat); the size of tumor mass (mean 0.41 cm versus 1.47 cm [p < 0.05]) and the weight of the tumor mass (mean 1.22 g versus 3.23 g; [p < 0.05]) also lower in the TH treated rats compared to control.

The grade of breast cancer is lower (I and II) compared to control (Grade III),

The efficacy of TH treatment in reducing the expression of breast cancer was attributed to the lower anti-apoptotic proteins (E2, ESR1, and Bcl-xL) expression and a higher pro-apoptotic proteins (Apaf-1 and Caspase-9) expression at serum and on the cancer tissue level.

The breast cancer size breast in the TH-treated groups was smaller mean tumor size (≤ 2 cm3) compared to Controls (≤ 8 cm3). The number of cancers developing in TH-treated groups was also significantly lower.

More importantly, an increasing trend of the apoptotic index (AI) was found in TH-treated groups with an increasing dosage of Tualang Honey compared to control.

Taken altogether, adding a portion of honey into women's diet may have a potential effect in reducing the risk of breast cancer.

And honey may be considered an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.

Avocado, the Next Prominent Anti Prostate Cancer Functional Fruit, Scientists Say

Avocado may be the generation whole fruit medicine for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, some scientists found

Prostate cancer is a medical condition in which the cells of the prostate has become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and can be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissues.
At the advanced stage, as the tumor continues to grow, it may suppress the nearly healthy tissue and nerve cells leading to severe symptoms and pain.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Approximately, 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.

The most common symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent urination, weak or interrupted urine flow or the need to strain to empty the bladder. and the urge to urine frequently at night due to the large size of the tumor that suppresses the bladder and the flow of urine.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of blood in the urine, blood in the seminal fluid and pain or burning during urination caused by the tumor that breaks the nearby small veins and nerve cells.

At this stage, cancerous cells from the prostate gland can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ, leading to the secondary metastasis.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of prostate cancer. However, the increase in age, location and behavioral correlates are some prevalent risks of the disease onset.

According to the University of Zurich, factors that may enhance prostate cancer risk include frequent consumption of dairy products and, possibly, meat and increased physical activity, intakes of tomatoes, cruciferous vegetables, and soy are possible preventative behavioral factors.

These results indicated that by following a healthy diet with moderate exercise, the risk of prostate cancer can be reduced substantially.

Avocado is a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world. It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

With an aim to discover a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers at the University of the West Indies investigate the intake of dietary MUFAs from the whole fruit of avocado in the risk of prostate cancer (PCa).

The case study included 209 men 40-80 years old with newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed prostate cancer and 226 cancer-free men, attending the same urology clinics.

Higher intakes of dietary MUFA were inversely related to prostate cancer. The principal source of dietary MUFA of the participants was the avocado intake. Dietary intakes of other fats were not associated with PCa.

Dr. Jackson MD, the lead author wrote in the report, "Whole-blood and dietary MUFA reduced the risk of prostate cancer. The association may be related to avocado intakes".

Researchers at the University of California agreed that the avocado is known as a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids, for treatment of prostate cancer, but suggested that other bioactive substances including carotenoids, which might contribute to cancer-preventive properties similar to those attributed to other fruits and vegetables.

In vitro, injection of acetone extract of avocado containing carotenoids and tocopherols inhibited the growth of both androgen-dependent (LNCaP) and androgen-independent (PC-3) prostate cancer cell lines.

Incubation of PC-3 cells with the avocado extract led to G(2)/M cell cycle arrest accompanied by an increase in p27 protein expression, a protein that regulates the cell cycle.

Lutein combined with other bioactive compounds also exerted a similar effect in inhibiting the prostate cancer cell spreading, but the chemical compound alone did not reproduce the effects of the avocado extract on cancer cell proliferation.

These results strongly indicated, the avocado anti-prostate cancer efficacy probably is associated with all bioactive compounds containing in the fruit such as monounsaturated fat, and carotenoids.

In order to illustrate the importance of the whole fruit in the inhibition of prostate cancer, researchers examined the 3 newly isolated compounds from unripe avocado and found that all 3 compounds exert significant activity against six human tumor cell lines in culture and show selectivity for human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3) cells with 3 being nearly as potent as adriamycin.

Dr. Lu QY, after taking into account other factors said, "Because the avocado also contains a significant amount of monounsaturated fat, these bioactive carotenoids are likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream, where in combination with other diet-derived phytochemicals they may contribute to the significant cancer risk reduction associated with a diet of fruits and vegetables".

Taken altogether, avocado with abundant bioactive active compounds and MUFAs may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Honey Protects Our Skin Pigment Against the Onset of Melanoma Skin Cancer

Scientists may have found a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of skin melanoma cancer, according to some studies.

Skin melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the alternation of the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. However, in rare cases, melanoma can also occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye.
The 4 most common types of skin melanoma include
1. Superficial spreading melanoma, the type of cancer has a tendency to spread grow outward and spread across the surface of the skin, accounted for 70% of all melanoma skin cancer.

2, Nodular melanoma normally grows down into the skin and has a tendency to spread more quickly than other types of melanoma skin cancer.

3. Lentigo malignant melanoma, most common in the older population, making up approximately 15% of all melanoma skin cancer.

4. Acral lentiginous melanoma, most common in people with darker skin. Cancer first moves outward before spreading deeper into the skin.

According to the statistic, melanoma skin cancer is increasing and anticipated to continue to rise. In the United States, approximately 70,230 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed, causing the death of 8,790.

The causes of melanoma skin cancer are associated with the alternation of the pigment cells in the skin. Why some people are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not even share similar health conditions, family history, and ethnicity.

However, according to the epidemiological studies, genetic mutation inherited from the parent, exposure to the environmental toxins and sun UV rays are the most common associated with the increased risk of melanoma skin cancer.

In fact, people who inherited the BRAF oncogene have a substantial risk to develop melanoma skin cancer and the most common genes which have been primarily linked to familial melanoma, are CDKN2A and CDK4.

Dr. Miriam Potrony, the lead author in the study "Update in genetic susceptibility in melanoma" suggested that 10% of melanoma skin cancer are genetically related and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A), identified as the first melanoma susceptibility gene more than 20 years ago, is the main high-risk gene for melanoma.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In the finding a natural ingredient for the reduction of risk and treatment of melanoma skin cancer, researchers launched an investigation to determine the effect of chrysin, a flavonoid present in honey, propolis, against human uveal melanoma cell lines (M17 and SP6.5)

Injection of chrysin reduced the viability of cultured human melanoma cells in a dose-dependent manner (0, 10, 30 and 100 µM) with IC50 at 28.3 and 35.8 µM in SP6.5 and M17 cell lines, respectively.

Chrysin at 30-100 µM levels selectively reduced the viability of melanoma cells without affecting the viability of nearby healthy cells.

Chrysin inhibited the melanoma skin cancer cells through the proteins associated with cancer cell death and degradation.

These results indicated chrysin induces apoptosis of human uveal melanoma cells via the mitochondrial signaling pathway in the increased mitochondrial permeability

In the finding the scientist evidence for Manuka honey effect in the treatment of cancer, researchers at the UAE University conducted an investigation to examine the anti-cancer effect on three different cancer cell lines, murine melanoma (B16.F1) and colorectal carcinoma (CT26) as well as human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells in vitro.

Manuka honey has a potent anti-proliferative effect on all three cancer cell lines in a time- and dose-dependent manner, at the concentrations as low as 0.6% (w/v).

The efficacy of Manuka honey in the inhibitory melanoma skin cancer was attributed to the increased expression of pro-apoptotic and cell death programming activity.

Treatment with manuka honey alone resulted in about 33% inhibition of tumor growth, which correlated with a histologically observable increase in tumor apoptosis without inducing any side effects.

Dr. Fernandez-Cabezudo MJ, the lead author said, "Although better control of tumor growth was observed in animals treated with paclitaxel alone or in combination with manuka honey (61% inhibition), a dramatic improvement in host survival was seen in the co-treatment group".

In support of the above differentiation, a joint study led by Nazarbayev University also suggested that honey processed the anti-carcinogenic effects in vitro and in a murine model of melanoma.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention of melanoma skin cancer and a secondary therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of melanoma skin cancer.

Banana, the Natural Antibiotic and Anti Oxidative Stress Functional Food

Banana may have a potential and substantial effect on balancing the levels of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, according to the studies.

Oxidative stress is a condition of imbalance of the ration of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the body, leading to the damage of cell, protein, and alternation of cell DNA.

The causes of oxidative are either associated with overexpression of free radicals and depressed the host antioxidant enzymes.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with the unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom. In order for them to become balanced, they must donate or steal an electron from the stable molecules, leading to the chain of reaction which can not be stopped until the electrons on the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of domino's effect is known as oxidation.

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation.

There are 2 types of antioxidants in the human body. The antioxidants are produced by the host and antioxidants come from dietary sources.

Every day, our body is bombarded by the invasion of free radical. Believe it not, substances include fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, air pollutants, which produce harmful free radicals to our body.

Epidemiological studies agreed that oxidative stress is involved in several age-related conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.

Dr. Seungyoun Jung,, the lead scientists in the evaluation of a healthy diet pattern and the risk of oxidative stress suggested, "Foods rich in healthy diets—characterized by a high intake of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains as well as a low intake of saturated fat—are aggregate sources of bioactive compounds. These compounds work as components in antioxidant systems, such as superoxide dismutases or glutathione peroxidase, and may break free radical chain reactions."

These results strongly indicated a healthy diet can form a significant part in reducing the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

On finding a natural antioxidant ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of the diseases associated with overexpression of free radical, researchers compared the antioxidant properties of banana (Musa paradisiaca) and Sapodilla/Chikoo (Manilkara zapota) peel extracts in chicken patties.

The chicken patties were assigned to 4 treatments viz., I. Control (meat + 2% salt), II.BHT (meat + 2% salt + 0.1% BHT), III. BPE (meat + 2% salt + 2% banana peel extract) and IV. SPE (meat + 2% salt + 2% sapodilla/chikoo peel extract).

By comparing the changes in color and lipid oxidation during 8 days refrigerated storage (4 ± °C) in 4 groups, researchers showed that
* The average phenolic content was 550.2 and 550.8 mg gallic acid equivalent per 10 g peel in BPE and SPE respectively.

* Free radical scavenging activity was 66.9 and 67.8% in BPE and SPE respectively.

* Banana peel extract had significantly (P < 0.05) higher reducing activity (1.6) as compared to sapodilla peel extract (0.91).

* Observation on lipid oxidation showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher TBARS values used for the determination of oxidative stress in control than the three treatments.

* The increase in TBARS from the initial day of storage to last day of storage was highest in control (514.3%)compared to BHT (387.7%), BPE (370.6%) and SPE (383.7%). Both synthetic antioxidants and natural extracts significantly decreased TBARS.

These results clearly suggested that the water extracts obtained from banana and sapodilla peel process natural antioxidants in poultry meat and meat products.

Furthermore, in examining the antioxidant activity of different Musa sp. leave extracts of hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol, researchers found that

* All the Musa sp. extracts showed moderate antibacterial activities expect Musa paradisiaca with the inhibition zone ranging from 8.0 to 18.6 mm.

* Among four species ethyl acetate extracts of Musa paradisiaca showed the highest activity against tested pathogens particularly E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and Citrobacter sp.

* The minimum inhibitory concentrations were within the value of 15.63- 250 µg/mL and minimum bactericidal concentrations were ranging from 31.25- 250 µg/mL.

* Antioxidant activity of Musa acuminate exhibited maximum activity among the r three Musa species.

Taken all together, a banana may be considered functional food for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections and diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Honey, the Potential Chemo Replacement for the Treatment Cancers, Scientists Say

Honey may process certain chemical compounds which have a potential effect in the reducing risk and treatment of cancers with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Cancer cells are the type of cells which can grow indefinitely compared to normal cycle which can only survive after certain cycle division.

According to cellular biology, in a fully grown adult cell, the rate of cell proliferation is much less, and under normal circumstances and cell division in an adult can only occur when there is the need to replace cells that have been lost, damaged, or worn out.

Most cancers start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the specific organ.

At the early stage, most cancer tumors do not induce any symptoms. However, after colonizing most tissue, the disorderly proliferative tumor can suppress the nearby tissue including nerve cells and blood vessels, causing localized pain and severe symptoms depending on the types of cancer.

Also, at this stage, malignant cells can also travel through lymph and blood to infect other healthy tissue, a distance away from the original site.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of cancer, people with a genetic preposition are at the highest risk.

Men who carry genetic mutation BRCA1, BRCA2, and HOXB13, inherited from the parents are at 70% risk of prostate cancer, and women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have an increased risk breast cancer of over 55%.

Sadly, more than 12 percent of men with prostate cancer tested positive for hereditary mutations of cancer-causing genes, 87% of women reported BRCA testing by one-year post-diagnosis of breast cancer.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, a joint study led by the Universiti Sains Malaysia was conducted to examine the role of honey in modulating the development and progression of tumors or cancers.

By searching the available data online literature, researchers found that there is available evidence (some of which is very recent) with regards to the antimetastatic, antiproliferative and anticancer effects of honey in various forms of cancer.

Honey was highly cytotoxic against tumor or cancer cells, while it was non-cytotoxic to normal cells.

Honey inhibited growth and proliferation of tumors or cancers.

Application of honey inhibited carcinogenesis by modulating the molecular processes of initiation, promotion, and progression stages.

Furthermore, in the study to examine the honey and royal jelly effects against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in patients with cancer, researchers examined the results of patients with cancer assigned for cisplatin chemotherapy randomly divided into bee honey and royal jelly groups pretreated before the initiation and during cisplatin chemotherapeutic regimen and control group on cisplatin only and showed that* Patients on crude bee honey and royal jelly capsules showed lower serum levels of renal injury products (creatinine and urea) compared to those in the control group.

* The changes in kidney parameters were significantly (p < 0.05) lower when compared within the bee honey group before and after cisplatin treatment.

These results indicated bee honey and royal jelly as natural compounds are effective in reducing cisplatin nephrotoxicity and may offer a promising chance for clinically meaningful prevention with no side effects.

Interestingly, Dr. the lead author in the examine the overwhelming evidence of the role of diet and lifestyle in cancer risk and prevention, suggested that there is a growing interest in the search for chemopreventative or chemotherapeutic agents derived from natural products.

And, honey is an important source of bioactive compounds derived from plants and recent years have been under the intensified study for its anticancer properties.

Recently, the role of honey in targeting key hallmarks of carcinogenesis, including uncontrolled proliferation, apoptosis evasion, angiogenesis, growth factor signaling, invasion, and inflammation has been presented. in numbers of conventional research.

Taken altogether, honey may be used as a functional food for the prevention of cancers and a secondary therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers.

Papaya, the Potential Functional Food for the Treatment of Anemia

Scientists may have found a whole fruit for the treatment of anemia with no side effects, according to studies.

Anemia is a medical condition associated with a lack of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood.

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common anemia, caused by poor iron levels in the blood, leading to the reduced delivery of oxygen throughout your body.

There are many risk factors involved in the onset of the condition. Blood loss, such as from heavy menstrual bleeding, ulcer, cancer and regular use of some over-the-counter pain relievers, especially aspirin are some of the most common prevalent risk factors.

People with a long-term deficiency of folate and vitamin B-12 which play a critical role in the production of healthy red blood cells are also at an increased risk of Amenia.

Also, people with the mutated gene inherited from the parent are at substantial risk of the disease. the Duliajan College study suggested that certain gene such as βE-Globin Gene is associated with the onset of anemia.

Dr. SK Sharma, the lead scientists in examine the anemia in India population surprisingly found that there is a high prevalence of anemia among children (78.9%), ever-married women (56.2%), pregnant women (57.9%) and never-married men (24.3%) in India.

The doctor continued after observing the levels of hemoglobin in the tested subjects, " Association of the lower level of hemoglobin,...., was observed in subjects carrying the βE-globin gene. The mean (± SD) hemoglobin levels of the subject with heterozygous and homozygous state of HbE was 10.9 ± 0.95 and 9.7 ± 0.64 g/dL, respectively, against 11.28 ± 1.42 g/dL observed in normal hemoglobin pattern (Hb AA)".

These results clearly stated that amenia may be a genetic preposition related disease that can be reversed in some people.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of anemia, with no side effect, researchers at the Covenant University, examined the papaya anti-anemia effect in subjects with sickle cell disease (SCD)

Sickle cell disease (SCD)is a genetic disease caused by an individual inheriting an allele for sickle cell hemoglobin from both parents. The disease is associated with the unusual production of a large number of immature blood cells.

Application of Carica papaya seed oil (Cari-oil) showed significant effects in reducing the levels of sickle blood cells compared with that of untreated SCD patients.

RBCs in Cari-oil treated samples were significantly higher (P < 0.05) compared with VerMyg, antisickling plant-treated samples.

The Cari-oil extract significantly reduced (P < 0.05) lactate dehydrogenase activity, in both male (HbSSM) and female (HbSSF) human sickle cell blood.

Lactate dehydrogenase activity, LDH consistently increased in patients with anemia.
Furthermore, Cari-oil treated HbSSM and HbSSF blood had significantly increased (P < 0.05) peroxidase activity which was a significant decrease in patients with anemia, compared with controls.

Dr. the lead scientist suggested at the end of the experiment, "Methanolic extracts from... C. papaya seed oil exhibited antisickling properties coupled with the potential to reduce stress in sickle cell patients".

Moreover, in patients with beta-thalassemia major and intermedia and E-beta-thalassemia, researchers found that by ameliorating oxidative stress in red blood cells, the disease may be treatable.

In vitro and in vivo, oral administration of FPP to beta-thalassemic mice (50 mg/mouse/day for 3 months) and to patients (3 g x 3 times/day for 3 months), reduced all the above-mentioned parameters of oxidative stress (p < 0.001 in mice and p < 0.005 in patients).

The results suggested that FPP, as a potent antioxidant, might alleviate symptoms associated with oxidative stress in severe forms of thalassemia.

In human studies, injection of fermented papaya preparation (FPP) on two groups of beta-thal patients: beta-thal, major and intermedia, (in Israel) and E-beta-thal (in Singapore) increased the production of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and significantly decreased the levels of ROS.

In other words, fermented papaya preparation (FPP) increased the content of reduced glutathione (GSH) in red blood cells (RBC), and decreased their reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, membrane lipid peroxidation, and externalization of phosphatidylserine (PS), indicating amelioration of their oxidative status, without a significant change in the hematological parameters.
The finding in human studies indicated it is possible that a longer duration of treatment, probably with the addition of an iron chelator, is required in order to achieve a significant change in the hematological parameters.

Taken altogether, Papaya, particularly in fermentation, may be considered a functional for the prevention and treatment of anemia with no side effects.
