Banana may have a potential effect in protecting the gastrointestinal tract against the formation of gastric ulcers, some scientists suggested.
Gastric ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside lining of your stomach.
The most common cause of gastric ulcers is associated with the infection of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). However, patients who are the long-term users of aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) also at a higher risk of gastric ulcers.
The long-term untreated gastric ulcers can result in gastric adenocarcinoma development.
Although there are some disagreements that a poor diet can cause gastric ulcers, some researchers suggested that a diet rich, fatty or spicy foods such as the Western diet and unhealthy lifestyle such as high caffeine. and excessive alcohol consumption also elevates the onset of the disease.
Therefore by following a healthy diet with more fruits and vegetables, whole grainless red meat and processed foods accompanied by a healthy choice of lifestyle and moderate exercise, one can lower the risk gastric ulcer substantially.
Dr. the lead author in the study, "Nutritional care in peptic ulcer" wrote, "Dietotherapy, as well as caloric distribution, should be adjusted to the patient's needs aiming to normalize the nutritional status and promote healing. Recommended nutrients can be different in the acute phase and in the recovery phase, and there is a greater need for protein and some micronutrients, such as vitamin A, zinc, selenium, and vitamin C in the recovery phase. In addition, some studies have shown that vitamin C has a beneficial effect on the eradication of H. pylori. Fibers and probiotics also play an important role in the treatment of peptic ulcer, because they reduce the side effects of antibiotics and help reduce treatment time.".
These results suggested that gastric ulcers not only can be prevented by the change of diet but can also be treated by modifying the antioxidant and nutrients intake.
Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.
The Banaras Hindu University in the reaffirming the expression of the inflammatory cytokines occurred in the onset of gastric ulcer onset launched an investigation to examine the effect of a Musa sapientum fruit (banana extract, MSE) extract the acetic acid (AA)-induced gastric ulcer (GU) in diabetic (DR) rat
A selected rat model was given MSE (100 mg/kg, oral), omeprazole (OMZ, 2.0 mg/kg, oral), insulin (INS, 4 U/kg, sc) or pentoxyphylline (PTX, 10 mg/kg, oral) once daily for 10 days in 14 days post-streptozotocin (60 mg/kg, intraperitoneal)-induced diabetic rats before the normal/diabetic rats were received CMC for the same period after induction of GU with AA.
According to the ulcer index, TNF-α and IL-1β were observed in normal (NR)-AA rat given the acetic acid (AA) compared to the NR-normal rats group.. the expression of proinflammatory presentation suggested that acetic acid (AA) has caused gastric damage.
Application of Musa sapientum fruit (MSE) extract inhibited the gastric ulcer expression through significant normalizing the levels of the blood glucose and gastric mucosal cytokines, TNF-α and IL-1β and growth factor, TGF-α, compared to OMZ (antiulcer drug).
Further analysis suggested that the efficacy of Musa sapientum fruit (MSE) extract was attributed to the presence of phytochemicals saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids, and alkaloids.
Dr. Kumar M, the lead scientists said, "MSE showed antidiabetic and better ulcer healing effects compared with OMZ (anti-ulcer drug)".
Additionally, in the study of the antiulcer and mucosal defensive factors effects of methanolic extract of Musa sapientum var. Paradisiaca (MSE, 100 mg/kg) in normal and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) rats. NIDDM was induced by administering streptozotocin (STZ, 70 mg/kg, ip) to 5 days old rat pups also found that
* The effects of MSE were effective compared with the known ulcer protective drug, sucralfate (SFT, 500 mg/kg) and anti-diabetic drug glibenclamide (GLC, 0.6 mg/kg) when administered orally, once daily for 6 days against gastric ulcers (GU).
* The MSE extracts to reverse the changes in gastric mucosal glycoproteins, cell proliferation, free radicals (lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide) and anti-oxidants enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) and glutathione (GSH) levels induced by administering streptozotocin.
* MSE showed better ulcer protective effect in NIDDM rats compared with SFT and GLC in CRS-induced GU
* The extracts restore the levels of the gastric mucosal glycoprotein which was reduced in the NIDDM rats without having any effect on cell proliferation.
* MSE pretreatment showed a reversal in the levels of all the parameters better than GLC.caused by the injection of streptozotocin.
Final differentiation discovered that the efficacy of MSE in the inhibition of gastric ulcers was attributed to the predominant effect on the mucosal glycoprotein, cell proliferation, free radicals, and antioxidant systems.
Taken all together, banana processed abundantly phytochemicals may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of gastric ulcer without inducing any side effects.
