Tomatoes Protect the Obese Against Obesity-Related Co-Morbidities

Obesity is a disease characterized by excess body fat that has accumulated over time. A BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height, a BMI that is between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.

According to the statistics, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. Obesity has been found to induce adverse effects in nearly every system of the human body, leading to an increased risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity continues to climb at an alarming rate, which leads to significant burdens to the country's economy and health care system.

Currently, there is no effective treatment of the disease. However, some researchers suggested that combating the powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity, particularly in the economy that may be the best approach to reduce the risk of obesity.

Bariatric surgery has been proposed to patients with extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or higher) due to weight-induced a serious weight-related health problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure accompanied by the commitment of lifestyle changes. However, this type of surgery has posed a serious risk to many patients if the commitment of making lifelong changes in their eating and exercise habits cannot be followed through.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of obesity. Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity in the US may be correlated to the promotion high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr, Golay A, the lead scientist at the Geneva University Hospital, wrote, "Epidemiological evidence suggests that a high-fat diet promotes the development of obesity and that there is a direct relationship between the amount of dietary fat and the degree of obesity".

And, "Dietary fat induces overconsumption and weight gain through its low satiety properties and high caloric density. Obese and post-obese subjects do not appear to adapt to dietary fat, and therefore fat storage is increased".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a natural and potential compound for the treatment of obesity complications, researchers investigated the effect of the potent tomato-derived antioxidant and oxidative status, and inflammatory markers in obese.

The study included the comparison of 8 obese patients (body mass index 37.5 +/- 2.5 kg/m2) with a control group of eight lean, age and gender-matched subjects (BMI 21.6 +/- 0.6 kg/m2), before and after 4 weeks of lycopene supplementation (tomato-derived Lyc-O-Mato) (30 mg daily).

Before treatment, according to the tested results, compared to control, obese subjects showed significantly reduced levels of plasma carotenoids, increased levels of CRP, and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine and oxidative stress.

Additional analysis of the findings, BMI was correlated with increased expression of CRP, proinflammation (IL-6), and oxidative stress.
The presence of high levels IL-6 and oxidative stress also found to correlate inversely with carotenoids (P < 0.05).

In other words, obese-induced increased levels of CRP, IL-6, and oxidative stress were attributed probably to the depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

After treatment, lycopene had a significant elevation of plasma carotenoids (1.79 vs. 0.54 microg/ml) and plasma of lycopene (1.15 vs 0.23 microg/ml) in the subjects compared to the placebo group.

The results suggested that injection of lycopene improved the levels of antioxidants enzymes in the obese, thus preventing the occurrence of diseases associated with CRP, IL-6, and oxidative stress without affecting the markers of inflammation and oxidation products.

Based on the results, researchers concluded, "Obese patients showed abnormally higher markers of inflammation and oxidation products and lower plasma carotenoids".

And, "The lack of reduction of pro-inflammatory markers could be attributed to the short period of the study and the small number of participants".

Taken altogether, tomatoes processed a high amount of lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention of obesity-related co-morbidities, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ginger Detoxes Liver Acute Toxicity and Improves Liver Functioning In ViVo, According to Studies

The functions of the liver are to filter out blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body.

In another world, the liver inhibits chemical toxins and other harmful by-products such as medication before distributing the clean blood to nourish the body.

In detail, the liver also plays a critical role in bile production for the digestive system in breaking down food, and excretion of bilirubin to clear waste products, production of cholesterol for building the cell wall membrane, and vitamin D secretion as well as steroormones.
According to the statistics, provided by the World Health Organization, liver diseases affect the largest population worldwide, representing 46% of global diseases.

Out of 35 million people in the world who die of chronic diseases, 59% are liver diseases and 59% of the mortality is because of chronic diseases.

Jaundice, persistently abdominal pain and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, chronic fatigue and gastrointestinal discomforts, particularly persistent itchy skin, dark urine color, and pale stool are some common signs and symptoms of liver problems.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of liver diseases, excessive alcohol drinking may be the major cause of liver diseases in the Western world, besides hepatitis C infection.

Dr. Radan Bruha, in the evaluation of alcoholic liver diseases, wrote, "Alcohol consumption is directly associated with liver disease mortality and accounts for elevated social and economic costs. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) may take the form of acute involvement (alcoholic hepatitis) or chronic liver disease (steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis)".

And, " The severity and prognosis of the alcohol-induced liver disease depend on the amount, pattern and duration of alcohol consumption, as well as on the presence of liver inflammation, diet, nutritional status and genetic predisposition of an individual. While steatosis is an almost completely benign disease, liver cirrhosis is associated with marked morbidity, mortality, and life expectancy shortening. The median survival of patients with advanced cirrhosis is 1-2 years. Severe acute alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is associated with mortality as high as 50%".

The results strongly suggested that excessive alcohol drinking over time will definitely cause alcoholic liver disease.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Scientists on finding a natural remedy in improving liver functionings examined the effects of 6-gingerol on the biochemical parameters and ovarian histological improvements in estradiol valerate (EV) induced PCOS rats.

36 female Wistar rats included in the study were divided into 4 groups: control, received a normal diet, PCOS control, received 4 mg/kg EV injection for 28 days and two experimental groups, received an EV injection for 28 days and followed by 6-gingerol (200 μg/kg and 400 μg/kg) for 14 days.

Before application of 6-gingerol, the group administrated by EV showed an increase in body and ovarian weights, abnormality in serum sex steroid profile and proinflammatory cytokines, and a decrease of antioxidant activity associated with the increase of total cholesterol (TC), low-density cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides.

However, pretreatment 6-gingerol treatments, particularly the 400 μg/kg dose, restored the alteration back to the normal and improved liver in the regulation of lipid profile.

The findings suggested that 6-gingerol processed beneficial effects in PCOS rats by inhibiting the oxidative stress and restoring biochemical parameters to normal and decreasing the cysts in the ovaries and increasing liver functioning.

In order to reveal more information on the ginger effect on the liver, researchers also reviewed the liver protective activity of polyphenol-rich food products (e.g., chokeberry, black and green tea, blueberry, olive oil, rosemary, and ginger) from this xenobiotic hepatotoxicity and treatment of this heavy metal-induced liver damage.

Injection of polyphenols showed a strong effect in binding ions of Cd against Cd in the induction of hepatotoxicity.

Although most studies are conducted in animal models, some of them are derived from experimental models that reflect human exposure. Therefore it is safe to assume that some polyphenol-rich food products may be promising protective agents against Cd hepatotoxicity in humans, including ginger.

Taken altogether, ginger used alone or combined with other polyphenol-rich foods may be considered functional remedies for improving the liver functioning with no side effects, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Cruciferous Vegetables Gobble Up Liver Cancer Cells

The liver is one of the organs with a lack of nerve tissue, therefore liver cancer does not induce pain until the later stage.

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells' DNA that normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

The most common cause of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus. However, in North America, due to the overexpression of the overweight and obese population, liver cancer may be slowly progressed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

There is a number of risk factors other than those mentioned above associated with the onset of liver cancer such as male, ethnicity, hepatitis viral carriers.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31%, and 43% of people with liver cancer are diagnosed at stages 0 and 1.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Isothiocyanates (ITCs), the phytochemicals derived from the breakdown of glucosinolates that exist in cruciferous vegetables against liver cancer cells.

In HepG2 cells, all ITCs reduced metabolic activity in each cell line, particularly in the compound phenylethyl-ITC.

Both dietary and synthetic ITCs were found to suppress the migratory and invasive potential of all cell lines.

Furthermore, chronic injection of dietary and synthetic ITCs also inhibited the cancer cell colony-forming capability and induced apoptosis.

Phenylethyl-ITC exposure resulted in a significant generation of reactive oxygen species to stimulate the expression of cytotoxicity in the cancer cell lines.

Collectively, researchers said, "These data highlight the potential advantages of utilizing ITCs to delay the carcinogenic process and the potential for dietary and synthetic ITCs to act as anticancer agents".

Taken altogether, Cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Best Remedy for the Treatment of Depression

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of depression according to studies.
Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting the physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think and act.

Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

There are many causes associated with the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief, or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome.

The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.

Some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering, and thoughts of harming themselves.

Readers may find other symptoms not be included in the article including behavior and physical symptoms.

According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression Association of American, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread depression in the Western world may be associated with life stress at work and home.

Dr. T. Plieger, the lead scientist in examining the effects of psychological stress on depression wrote, "A significantly closer relation between depression and life stress than between burnout and life stress was found in the healthy (z = 3.01, p = .003) as well as in the depressed sample".

And "This finding was supported in both samples by means of a path analytic approach where the associations between life stress, burnout, and depression were controlled for the possible mediator and moderator effects, also considering the influence of age".

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Scientists searching for an alternative remedy for the treatment of depression with no side effects examined the effects of honey on several studies through searching the database of online medical literature.

8 studies that satisfied the standard criteria and guidelines were chosen, including 2 RCTs of human subjects and 6 animal studies.

The randomized studies suggested that depressed elderly treated with a mix of honey and barely exhibited a significant decrease in depression, stress, and mood disturbances scores compared to the control group.

In menopause women, treatment with honey or a mix of honey and pollens exerted a significant activity in the improvement of the three subscales of the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) by 68.3% and 70.9%, respectively.

The results also suggested that posttreatment demonstrates a better effect compared to the pretreatment when the mixture of honey was applied.

Furthermore, the application showed similar effects on the serum levels of cholesterol, such as total, HDL, or LDL cholesterol), triglycerides, or oestradiol in both groups.

According to the survey returned, participants reported that they observed improvements 3-4 days after the initiation of treatment. On a 10-point taste scale, (1 = very good and 10 = very bad) honey received an average score of 2.3, whereas a honey and pollen mix received an average score of 6.0.

Interestingly, the side effects of exhaustion and edema of lower extremities were reported by some participants and 2 participants were withdrawn from the study due to the taste of the mix of honey with bare powder.

In animal studies, all experiments displayed a positive effect of honey on depression. Some studies also found that honey improves depressive-like behaviors, cognitive function, and symptoms of anhedonia.

Furthermore, honey injection also showed a reduction of anxiety symptoms and improvement of spatial memory.

Moreover, honey alone or a combination of honey and other bee products inhibited MAO enzyme activity in the liver of treated mice.

Where monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), an enzyme that metabolizes monoamines was elevated in depressed patients.

And, the anti-depressive effects were correlated to the volume of honey intake. In other words, greater improvements were associated with the increased administration of high doses of honey.

In order to reveal more information about honey depression activity, researchers examined
Tualang and Acacia honey in patients with stress-depression disorder.

Both Tualang and Acacia honey showed a significant anti-depression activity through increasing the production of levels of antioxidants.

However, Tualang honey consumption was found to be more suitable in regulating weight-related effects of stress-depression disorder compared to that of Acacia honey which exerted more profound effects in alleviating depression effects and managing glucocorticoids imbalance effects of the stress-depression disorder.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly Tualang, and Acacia honey, used alone or combined with other bee products may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of depression, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
