In HepG2 cells, all ITCs reduced metabolic activity in each cell line, particularly in the compound phenylethyl-ITC.
Both dietary and synthetic ITCs were found to suppress the migratory and invasive potential of all cell lines.
Furthermore, chronic injection of dietary and synthetic ITCs also inhibited the cancer cell colony-forming capability and induced apoptosis.
Phenylethyl-ITC exposure resulted in a significant generation of reactive oxygen species to stimulate the expression of cytotoxicity in the cancer cell lines.
Collectively, researchers said, "These data highlight the potential advantages of utilizing ITCs to delay the carcinogenic process and the potential for dietary and synthetic ITCs to act as anticancer agents".
Taken altogether, Cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
