Soy and Menstrual Pain

In a study of "Associations of menstrual pain with intakes of soy, fat and dietary fiber in Japanese women" by Guarantor: C Nagata., posted in European Journal and clinical Nutrition, researcher found that Intake of dietary fiber was significantly inversely correlated with the menstrual pain scale (r=-0.12, P=0.04) after controlling for age, smoking status, age at menarche and total energy intake. Neither soy nor fat intake was significantly correlated with menstrual pain after controlling for the covariate with the conclusion of : The cross-sectional difference in dietary fiber intake across the level of menstrual pain was small in magnitude but warrants further studies

Apple-Nut Salad & Tofu-Honey Dressing Recipe

Ingredients:




Salad

5 Red Delicious apples, sliced
1/4 cup Fresh lemon juice
1 cup Water
3 Celery stalks, diced
8 ounces Pineapple tidbits, drained
1/3 cup Walnuts, coarsely chopped
1 Mint sprig as a garnish



Dressing
1 cup Plain low-fat yogurt
1/2 cup Soft tofu
1 tablespoon Honey
1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
Instructions for Apple-Nut Salad & Tofu-Honey Dressing:

For the Salad
Place sliced apples in mixture of lemon juice and water. Add more water if needed to cover apples.
At serving time, drain liquid from apples. Combine apples, celery, pineapple and nuts.

For the Dressing
Combine yogurt, tofu, honey and cinnamon in a food processor and blend until smooth. Chill.
Combine apple mixture with dressing and toss gently. Garnish with mint sprigs.

Soy and Sex Hormone In Men

In a study of "Soy milk intake in relation to serum sex hormone levels in British men." by Allen NE, Appleby PN, Davey GK, Key TJ. Soy milk intake was measured using a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire, and serum hormone concentrations were measured by immunoassay. Multiple regression was used to investigate the association between soy milk intake, an index of isoflavone intake, and hormone levels after adjustment for pertinent confounders, researchers found that soy milk intake was not associated with serum concentrations of testosterone, free testosterone, androstanediol glucuronide, sex hormone-binding globulin, or luteinizing hormone. These results suggest that soy milk intake, as a marker of isoflavone intake, is not associated with serum sex hormone concentrations among free-living Western men.

In a study of |" Soy milk intake and plasma sex hormones: a cross-sectional study in pre- and postmenopausal women (EPIC-Oxford). by Verkasalo PK, Appleby PN, Davey GK, Key TJ. Cytotrophoblast cells were isolated from human term placentas. Phytoestrogens genistein and daidzein were incubated in different concentrations with trophoblast cells. Untreated cells were used as controls. After 24 h aliquots were removed and tested for progesterone and estrogen production, researchers found that phytoestrogens (genistein and daidzein) sufficiently reduce progesterone production in human term trophoblast cells. Because blockade of progesterone is a possible mechanism involved in initiation of labor, we may speculate that high doses of phytoestrogens at the feto-maternal interphase could play a negative role in maintenance of pregnancy. Stimulation of estrogen production by genistein and daidzein in trophoblast cells is probably due to estrogen receptor blocking effects of both phytoestrogens. Trophoblast cells seem to compensate blocking of its estrogen receptors by higher estrogen production.

Soy and plasma sex hormones

In a cross sectional study of "Soy milk intake and plasma sex hormones: a cross-sectional study in pre- and postmenopausal women (EPIC-Oxford)." by Verkasalo PK, Appleby PN, Davey GK, Key TJ., of 636 premenopausal and 456 postmenopausal British women. Sixty-five percent of the women were vegetarians or vegans. Data on soy milk intake and other factors were obtained from a validated food frequency questionnaire, hormone concentrations were measured by immunoassays, and variations in geometric means were compared using analysis of covariance, researchers found that no statistically significant trends or meaningful associations between soy milk intake and circulating sex hormones. Adjusting for factors possibly affecting circulating hormone concentrations did not materially alter the results. We conclude that soy milk intake does not change plasma concentrations of sex hormones in pre- or postmenopausal British women who consume soy milk as a part of their regular diet.

Soy and Renal Cell Carcinoma

In a study of "Antiproliferative and antiangiogenic activities of genistein in human renal cell carcinoma" by Hiroto Sasamura, Atsushi Takahashi, Jinyang Yuan, Hiroshi Kitamura, Naoya Masumori, Noriomi Miyao, Naoki Itoh,Taiji Tsukamoto posted in The Official Journal of Societe Internationale D' Urology, researchers found that Treatment with genistein for 48 hours inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner and 100 μg/mL genistein inhibited it in a time-dependent manner. A dose of 50 μg/mL genistein clearly induced cell apoptosis. The vascular volume after implantation of the Millipore filter chamber containing RCC cells increased to threefold that without RCC cells. Genistein in the Millipore filter chamber significantly decreased the neovascularization induced by human RCC cells in vivo. and concluded that the results of this study demonstrated that genistein inhibited cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and suppressed in vivo angiogenesis in human RCC cells. Genistein may be a promising antitumorigenic and antiangiogenic agent for the treatment and prevention of RCC.

Soy and Antifungal Activity

In a study of "Antifungal Activity of Glyceollins Isolated from Soybean Elicited with Aspergillus sojae" by Hyo Jung Kim, Hwa-Jin Suh, Choong Hwan Lee, Jeong Hwan Kim, Sun Chul Kang, Sunmin Park and Jong-Sang Kim posted in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers found that the results obtained in this study demonstrate that glyceollins derived from soybean seeds elicited with A. sojae possess a wide range of fungicidal activity and could become an alternative to synthetic fungicides for controlling certain important fungal diseases.
