Selected male C57BL/J6 mice included in the study were assigned into four groups to receive: control diet (CD), high-fat diet (HFD), high-fat diet supplemented with lycopene or with tomato powder (TP) for 12 weeks.
According to the tested assays, both lycopene and TP supplementation significantly reduced adiposity index, organ, and relative organ weights, serum triglycerides, free fatty acids, 8-iso-prostaglandin GF2α induced by inflammation and improved glucose homeostasis, but did not affect total body weight.
Furthermore, both lycopene and TP supplementation prevented HFD-induced hepatosteatosis and hypertrophy of adipocytes associated with induced obesity.
Moreover, both lycopene and TP decreased HFD-induced proinflammatory cytokine mRNA expression in the liver and in the epididymal adipose tissue.
In other words, lycopene and TP inhibited the expression of hepatosteatosis involved in liver disease and hypertrophy of adipocytes in obese.
Lycopene and TP protected the adipocytes dysfunction in the onset of obese complications by inhibiting the overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the tissues.
Based on the results, researchers said, " lycopene or TP supplementation display similar beneficial health effects that could be particularly relevant in the context of nutritional approaches to fight obesity-associated pathologies".
In order to reveal more information about tomato effects on obese complications, researchers examined the Mediterranean tomato-based sofrito sauce against obese fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21)-resistant state.
In obese Zucker rats (OZR) fed with a sofrito-supplemented diet or control diet, researchers found that the sofrito-supplemented diet improved insulin and FGF21 sensitivity in OZR, by exhibiting the effect on glucose metabolism.
The sofrito-fed rats also showed a strong effect on the protection of the UCP1 gene associated with reduced obesity and improved insulin sensitivity.

Tomatoes Protect the Liver Against Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis in Vivo
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a type of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver.
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is asymptomatic until the condition is developed into cirrhosis, the condition that causes advanced liver scars and reduced the performance of the liver.

With an aim to discover a potential and natural compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers in the cancer team at the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University examined the hepatoprotective effect of lycopene (Ly) on the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in an animal model.
65 rats selected to the study were randomly divided into the normal group, model group, and lycopene (Ly) treatment groups, with model rats induced NAFLD by feeding a high-fat diet for 14 wks.
Pretreatment of lycopene at the dose of 20 mg/kg showed a significant decrease in the levels of serum AST (2.07-fold), ALT (2.95-fold), and the blood lipid TG (2.34-fold) and TC (1.66-fold) compared to the model group.
Furthermore, pretreatment with 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg of Ly significantly raised the levels of antioxidant enzyme SOD in a dose-dependent manner compared to the model group.
Additional differentiation of the lycopene liver protective property, researchers found that Ly not only significantly decreased levels of lipid products LDL-C and improved HDL-C level but also significantly decreased the content of liver free fatty acid (FFA), also compared to the model group.
Moreover, in the doses of pretreatment with 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg of Ly also significantly reduced MDA amount, a marker of liver oxidative stress by 30.87, 45.51 and 54.49% in the liver homogenates, respectively
Levels of CYP2E1 expression associated with the metabolism of xenobiotics in the liver, proinflammatory cytokines, infiltration of liver fats and reversed histopathological changes in the model group also were reduced by the injection of Ly.
Based on the results, researchers said, "Ly has a protective effect on NAFLD, down-regulates expression of TNF-α, and that CYP2E1 may be one of the action mechanisms for Ly".
Taken altogether, tomatoes processed abundantly bioactive compound Ly may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis through its liver protective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ginger, The Potential Anti Ulcerative Colitis Functional Spice

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
With an aim to reaffirm the traditional use of ginger for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, one of the most common types of inflammatory bowel disease, researchers evaluated the 6-Gingerol, a component of gingerols extracted from ginger (Zingiber officinale) anti ulcerative colitis effect.
In the selected rat model, colitis was induced in rats through consumption of 5% (cw/v) dextran sulfate sodium drinking water for 7 consecutive days before 6-Gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 10-gingerol were given intraperitoneally at doses of 30 mg kg-1 d-1 for another 7 days,
At the end of the experiment, researchers found that all three gingerols attenuated colitic symptoms evoked by dextran sulfate sodium
Application of 6-Gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 10-gingerol significantly elevated superoxide dismutase activity, decreased malondialdehyde levels and myeloperoxidase activity in the colon tissue.
The applications also strongly decrease the expression of proinflammatory cytokines expression.
All three gingerols obviously accelerated mucosal damage healing.

Mice co-treated with 6 gingerols significantly reversed the DSS-mediated reduction in body weight, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and restored the colon shrinkage back to near normal.
Application of 6-gingerol significantly suppressed the circulating concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines caused by injection DSS and reactivity the systematic immune response through increasing the myeloperoxidase activity.
Moreover, 6-gingerol also restored the function of the colon in response to waste material.
The efficacy of 6-gingerol in the inhibition of ulcerative colitis was attributed to the stimulation of the increasing activities of antioxidant enzymes and glutathione content, decreasing the hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde levels.
In other words, 6-gingerol restored the balanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the tested mice injected by DSS.
Dr. Ajayi BO, the lead scientist said, " 6-Gingerol suppressed the induction of ulcerative colitis in mice via and anti-inflammatory activities, and may thus represent a potential anti-colitis drug candidate".

The participants were randomly assigned to two groups and followed up for two cycles. The treatment group was given fennel drop and the control group was given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or oral contraceptive pills.
After assessing the final report, researchers suggested that both groups exert a clinic significant effect in reducing pain. However, a comparison of bleeding severity in the study group before and after the intervention on the first day, second day, the third day, the fourth day, and fifth day was 0.948, 0.330, 0.508, 0.583, 0.890, respectively.

Moreover, in a vitro joint study by the Institute of Science and Technology, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of 2% chlorhexidine gel (CHX) isolated from the ginger as auxiliary chemical substance and intracanal medications on Candida albicans.
The study included 48 single-rooted human teeth randomly divided into fourr groups (n = 12), according to intracanal medications used: (1) Calcium hydroxide + apyrogenic saline solution (Ca(OH)2 + SS), (2) 20% ginger glycolic extract (GEN), (3) calcium hydroxide + 20% ginger glycolic extract (Ca(OH)2 + GEN), (4) apyrogenic SS (control).
At the end of the experiment, researchers found that
* CHX was effective in the complete elimination of E. coli and C. albicans.
* ChX also significantly reduced and then completely eliminated E. faecalis after intracanal medication.
* All other applications also revealed a reduction of endotoxins, the outer membrane of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria.
In the final report, the research team concluded, "CHX and intracanal medication used were able to eliminate the microorganisms from the root canal; the endotoxins were reduced, yet not completely eliminated".
These results strongly suggested that ginger bioactive compound processes a significant antibacterial activity, particularly in those of C. albicans.
