Gastric cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cell growth in the stomach.
Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of stomach tissue.
Due to the small size at the early stage, gastric cancer is asymptomatic.
However, at the later stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers of the stomach, the cancer cell may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Researchers do not know why some people with the same health condition are susceptible to the risk of gastric cancer, while others do not. The exact causes of gastric cancer are also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that Age, diet, and stomach disease, such as can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer.
The most common symptoms of gastric cancer are stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite,... and indigestion. However, common symptoms of unexpected weight loss and stomach ulcers can only be found in gastric cancer while iron-deficiency anemia.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).
Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of cancer, aging may be one of the major risk factors that cause the disease onset as cancer has been found to have a peak incidence between 50 and 70 years of age.
On finding a potential plant that processes anti-invasive cancer activity researchers examined the relationship between consumption of cruciferous vegetables (CV) in the risk of gastric cancer.
According to the meta-analysis that summarize available evidence from epidemiological studies published reports of CV intake and gastric cancer were identified using MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, and Web of Science databases through to the end of September 2012, including 16 case-control and 6 prospective studies,
* The pooled studies showed a significantly inverse association between CV (relative risk = 0.81; 95% confidence interval, 0.75-0.88) intake and gastric cancer risk, with little heterogeneity (Q = 27.27, P = 0.292, I(2) = 12.0%).
* In a separate analysis, the case-control studies of CV intake yielded significant results compared to the borderline statistical significance of CV intake yielded in the prospective studies.
* Moreover, significant results were consistent for high-quality studies, for North American, European, and Asian studies, for studies on males, and for studies on non-cardia gastric cancer.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "... this meta-analysis provides evidence that high intake of CV was inversely associated with the risk of gastric cancer and non-cardia gastric cancer in humans.
Taken altogether, CV with rich phytochemicals may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Onion Protects the Cell DNA Against the Risk of Ovarian Cancer
Cancer is a class of diseases caused by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of the DNA.
After penetrating into deeper layer tissues of a specific organ, the proliferative tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.
The most advanced stage of cancer may result in the death of the patients.
The ovaries are an -shaped ovum-producing reproductive organ in part of a woman's reproductive system connected to the fallopian tubes and attached to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament. Usually, the left and right ovary take a turn to release an egg every month.
Ovarian cancer is a condition of abnormal cell growth of ovarian cells that start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the ovary have become cancerous. Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancer in the US, according to the statistics adapted from the American Cancer Society's publication,.
Cancer Facts & Figures 2010, an estimated 21,880 women in the United States will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 13,850 deaths.
The exact causes of ovarian cancer are unknown. However, the most common prevalent factors associated with increased risk of ovarian cancer are
*Age
The risk of ovarian cancer increases for women between 50 to 70 years of age.
* Genetic preposition
Women who carry certain mutation genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for 5%–13% of ovarian cancers.
* Family history
The risk of the disease increases, if one of your direct member family has a history of cancer.
* Never pregnant
Researchers found that the risk of ovarian cancer is lower with numbers of pregnancy.
* Race
White women are associated with a higher risk than other races.
* Hormone therapy
Risk of ovarian cancer increase with the use of hormone replacement therapy in post-menopausal women.
* Chemicalsexposures
Certain chemicals such as asbestos also increase the risk of ovarian cancer.
* High fat dietary
Researchers found that women who diet high in saturated fat and trans fat are at higher risk.
* Fertility medication
Drugs used to enhance fertility such as Clomiphene citrate may increase the risk of ovarian cancer.
* Milk
According to the BBC, researchers found that women who drank two or more glasses a day were at double the risk of those who did not consume it at all, or only in small amounts.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the effects of onionin A (ONA) derived from the onion in the inhibition of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in the M2 phenotype.
According to the tested analysis.* Onionin A (ONA )inhibits ovarian cancer cell proliferation induced by co-culture with human macrophages.
* Onionin A directly suppressed lung cancer cell proliferation.
* Onionin A enhanced the effects of anti-cancer drugs was also observed.
* In ovarian cancer cells. signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) involved in cell proliferation and chemo-resistance were significantly suppressed by ONA.
* Additionally, ONA inhibited cancer progression and prolonged the survival time in a murine ovarian cancer model under single and combined with chemo drug treatment conditions.
Based on the finding, researchers said, "ONA is considered useful for the additional treatment of patients with lung cancer owing to its suppression of the pro-tumor activation of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and direct cytotoxicity against cancer cells".
Taken altogether, onion processed a higher mount of onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Banana, The Potential Gastric Ulcer Healing Functional Food
Banana may have a potential effect in protecting the gastrointestinal tract against the formation of gastric ulcers, some scientists suggested.
Gastric ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside lining of your stomach.
The most common cause of gastric ulcers is associated with the infection of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). However, patients who are the long-term users of aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) also at a higher risk of gastric ulcers.
The long-term untreated gastric ulcers can result in gastric adenocarcinoma development.
Although there are some disagreements that a poor diet can cause gastric ulcers, some researchers suggested that a diet rich, fatty or spicy foods such as the Western diet and unhealthy lifestyle such as high caffeine. and excessive alcohol consumption also elevates the onset of the disease.
Therefore by following a healthy diet with more fruits and vegetables, whole grainless red meat and processed foods accompanied by a healthy choice of lifestyle and moderate exercise, one can lower the risk gastric ulcer substantially.
Dr. the lead author in the study, "Nutritional care in peptic ulcer" wrote, "Dietotherapy, as well as caloric distribution, should be adjusted to the patient's needs aiming to normalize the nutritional status and promote healing. Recommended nutrients can be different in the acute phase and in the recovery phase, and there is a greater need for protein and some micronutrients, such as vitamin A, zinc, selenium, and vitamin C in the recovery phase. In addition, some studies have shown that vitamin C has a beneficial effect on the eradication of H. pylori. Fibers and probiotics also play an important role in the treatment of peptic ulcer, because they reduce the side effects of antibiotics and help reduce treatment time.".
These results suggested that gastric ulcers not only can be prevented by the change of diet but can also be treated by modifying the antioxidant and nutrients intake.
Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.
The Banaras Hindu University in the reaffirming the expression of the inflammatory cytokines occurred in the onset of gastric ulcer onset launched an investigation to examine the effect of a Musa sapientum fruit (banana extract, MSE) extract the acetic acid (AA)-induced gastric ulcer (GU) in diabetic (DR) rat
A selected rat model was given MSE (100 mg/kg, oral), omeprazole (OMZ, 2.0 mg/kg, oral), insulin (INS, 4 U/kg, sc) or pentoxyphylline (PTX, 10 mg/kg, oral) once daily for 10 days in 14 days post-streptozotocin (60 mg/kg, intraperitoneal)-induced diabetic rats before the normal/diabetic rats were received CMC for the same period after induction of GU with AA.
According to the ulcer index, TNF-α and IL-1β were observed in normal (NR)-AA rat given the acetic acid (AA) compared to the NR-normal rats group.. the expression of proinflammatory presentation suggested that acetic acid (AA) has caused gastric damage.
Application of Musa sapientum fruit (MSE) extract inhibited the gastric ulcer expression through significant normalizing the levels of the blood glucose and gastric mucosal cytokines, TNF-α and IL-1β and growth factor, TGF-α, compared to OMZ (antiulcer drug).
Further analysis suggested that the efficacy of Musa sapientum fruit (MSE) extract was attributed to the presence of phytochemicals saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids, and alkaloids.
Dr. Kumar M, the lead scientists said, "MSE showed antidiabetic and better ulcer healing effects compared with OMZ (anti-ulcer drug)".
Additionally, in the study of the antiulcer and mucosal defensive factors effects of methanolic extract of Musa sapientum var. Paradisiaca (MSE, 100 mg/kg) in normal and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) rats. NIDDM was induced by administering streptozotocin (STZ, 70 mg/kg, ip) to 5 days old rat pups also found that
* The effects of MSE were effective compared with the known ulcer protective drug, sucralfate (SFT, 500 mg/kg) and anti-diabetic drug glibenclamide (GLC, 0.6 mg/kg) when administered orally, once daily for 6 days against gastric ulcers (GU).
* The MSE extracts to reverse the changes in gastric mucosal glycoproteins, cell proliferation, free radicals (lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide) and anti-oxidants enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) and glutathione (GSH) levels induced by administering streptozotocin.
* MSE showed better ulcer protective effect in NIDDM rats compared with SFT and GLC in CRS-induced GU
* The extracts restore the levels of the gastric mucosal glycoprotein which was reduced in the NIDDM rats without having any effect on cell proliferation.
* MSE pretreatment showed a reversal in the levels of all the parameters better than GLC.caused by the injection of streptozotocin.
Final differentiation discovered that the efficacy of MSE in the inhibition of gastric ulcers was attributed to the predominant effect on the mucosal glycoprotein, cell proliferation, free radicals, and antioxidant systems.
Taken all together, banana processed abundantly phytochemicals may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of gastric ulcer without inducing any side effects.

Healthy Foods Apricot and Plum, the next Generation of Oral Hygiene
People with the problem with oral hygiene may consider adding Apricot and Plum into their diet, a new study suggested. In fact, the foods not contain a measurable amount of nutrients which are important to maintain the proper growth and body functions, but also enhance the immune system in fighting against the invasion of foreign substances, including bacterial and viral agents.
Patients with oral hygiene incompetence may be experiencing certain dental consequences such as gum diseases including cavities or even tooth loss.
According to the study by the University of Karachi, butanoic extract from Prunus armeniaca exhibited antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria(1).
Mei, another member of the Prunus armeniaca, a favorite snack of Asian women, especially for those in the early stage of pregnancy, probably due to its sour taste, is also found to improve oral hygiene. According to the study of the University of Hong Kong, in the differentiation of the antibacterial effectiveness of 20 traditional Chinese herbs. Mei was found to exert a significant effect against all testing oral bacteria, namely, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis(3).
Organic acids, the main ingredient of Fructus mume extract, also showed strong evidence in enhancing oral hygiene through its antimicrobial effect on the orthodontic bracket in vitro by increasing the number of dead bacteria on the surface(4).
Mei or Lu E Mei is also known as Plum. The sour and warm herb has been used in TCM to treat diarrhea, pain from colic caused by ascaris, alleviates thirst, as well as other digestive system diseases caused by an imbalance of bacteria. According to the University of Hong Kong, at the suspension of 2 g/mL the extract showed a significantly inhibited effect on all tested oral pathogenic bacteria and may be considered as a potential anti- oral antimicrobial agent to control or prevent dental diseases(5).
Unfortunately, accompanied to their health effects, Mei can not be used in case of internal heat excess such as high fever with infection or cold or flu without sweat)(6) and sulfite-sensitive People should not consume fried apricot because sulfur- compounds are often added to dried foods as preservatives for prevention of oxidation, according to traditional Chinese medicine. Avocado-Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASUs), A Natural Treatment of Osteoarthritis, with No side Effects, Studies Showed
Avocado may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.
Avocado is commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world.
The fruit is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.
Osteoarthritis is a group of diseases involved progressive denegation of joints, including articular cartilage and subchondral bone.
According to the statistic, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US, affecting over 10% men and 13% in women aged 60 years or older. The disease can also affect the younger population, after a traumatic injury.
Epidemiological studies suggested that symptoms progress slowly and contribute to workplace disability and reduced quality of life.
Dr. Hofmann S, the lead scientist in the team of arthritis in the examine the mechanical causes of osteoarthritis in young adults suggested that that certain conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement (a condition in which extra bone grows along one or both of the bones that form the hip joint) are a very common cause of secondary osteoarthritis (OA) in the young adults" and "
It is an important co-factor in the better recognized pre-arthritic deformities such as residual hip dysplasia (RHD), Perthes disease and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE)".
These results clearly indicated genetic mutation and mechanical deformity are major causes of osteoarthritis in younger adults besides athletic injury.
Some scientists proposed that the development of femoroacetabular impingement may be a result of a repetitive injury to the proximal femoral physis that occurs during a critical period of development.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, a disease associated with the progressive degeneration of joints, researchers at the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth assessed the anti-OA of the compounds Avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) which have shown some promise for OA.
By searching the database of medical literature, researchers found 4 randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trials of ASU.satisified the guideline and criteria.
The doses per day in the 4 studies are in the range between 300 mg and 600 mg.
3 out of 4 studies suggest that ASU is effective for the symptomatic treatment of OA.
Furthermore, the Hôpital Léopold Bellan launched a follow-up study to investigate the efficacy of preparations with avocado-soybean unsaponifiables (ASUs) in osteoarthritis (OA) patients in the hip, included 163 patients, 102 men and 61 women (mean age 63.2 +/- 8.7 years).
Participants in the study are patients with regular painful primary OA of the hip (European League Against Rheumatism 1980 criteria) and a joint space still > or = 1 mm were selected entered a prospective, multicenter, randomized, parallel group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 2 years duration.
ASU treatment group showed a lesser joint space loss compared to the significantly greater loss in the placebo group.
The clinical parameters in the 2 groups did not differ significantly throughout the study.
These results indicated a significant effect of ASU against the progression of joint loss in OA patients.
Dr,. the lead scientists said, "SU significantly reduced the progression of joint space loss as compared with placebo in the subgroup of patients with advanced joint space narrowing".
Taken altogether, avocado-soybean unsaponifiables (ASUs) may have a profound effect in reducing the symptoms and progression of osteoarthritis.

Apricot, A Natural Antibiotic Which Protects the Stomach Against Chronic Gastritis Caused by Bacteria Helicobacter pylori (Hp), Scientists Show
Apricot may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk, progression and treatment of chronic gastritis, some scientists suggested.
Chronic Gastritis is a condition of chronic inflammation of the stomach mucosa with function to protect the stomach against overexpression of stomach acid produced for breaking down food.
The most common cause of chronic gastritis is an infection by Helicobacter pylori bacteria
Chronic gastritis can be caused by the immune system which mistakenly attacks the cells in the stomach lining and long term intake of conventional medicine, such as NSAIDs, aspirin, ibuprofen
Conventional medication used for the treatment of the condition is totally dependent on the causes of the disease, including antibiotics for bacterial infection, medicine that block acid production and promote or neutralize stomach acid.
If you experience localized symptoms of upper abdominal pain, indigestion, bloating, nausea,... and vomiting, you have chronic gastritis. Please see your doctor rule out the possibility.
The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongs to the family Rosaceae. Apricot is classified with the family of the plum and has yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.
Chemical constituents
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(3) and flavonoid glycosides, (4),
In the study of 1358 asymptomatic adults diagnosed with chronic gastritis induced by bacteria Helicobacter pylori dividing into a group with high-intake and group with low-intake of Japanese apricot (CJA), at the end of the experience, researchers found that
* Among H. pylori-positive non-elderly subjects, antibody titers were significantly lower in the high-intake group (P=0.041).
* High apricot intake group demonstrated a significantly less H. pylori bacterial load and mononuclear infiltration irrespective of the gastric site in comparison to low intake group.
Finally, the Endoscopic tissue biopsy from participants also confirmed that a high intake group shows less H. pylori bacterial load and mononuclear infiltration irrespective of gastric site.
Dr. Enomoto S, the lead author said, "Our findings strongly indicate a preventive effect of JA intake on CAG by inhibiting H. pylori infection and reducing active mucosal inflammation".
Furthermore, in the study to examine Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in the induction of gastric disorders, including chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcers, intestinal metaplasia and cancer with Hp-inoculated gerbils given CJA in their drinking water at concentrations of 1 and 3% for 10 weeks, researchers at the Aichi Cancer Center Research Institute, showed that* CJA intake groups exert a lower score of gastritis and mucosal hyperplasia in compared to the Hp-inoculated control group.
* PH in the glandular stomach is lower in the dose of 1 and 3% CJA in compared to Hp-inoculated control groups.
These results indicated that CJA at doses of 1 and 3% has a strong effect in protecting the stomach lining against overexpression of stomach acid.
In the final report, Dr. Otsuka T, the lead scientist wrote, "These findings suggest that suppressive effects on gastric cancer development might also be expected as a result of decreased numbers of Hp and improvement of Hp-induced chronic active gastritis on the administration of CJA.".
Taking all together, Apricot fruit juice may be used as a natural antibiotic functional food for the treatment of chronic gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria without inducing any side effects.
