Cardiac toxicity is a condition in which the heart has been damage to some extents caused by harmful chemicals, including toxins induced by the treatment of chemotherapy, leading to reduced heart muscles function to pump blood and heart failure.
Long term intake of certain medication and people who are under treatment of chemotherapy have been found in most cases of cardiotoxicity.
Dr. Polonsky TS, the lead scientist wrote, "Age and preexisting left ventricular dysfunction have been identified most consistently as being associated with the development of clinical heart failure or a worsening of left ventricular function with chemotherapy".
And, "Other cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery disease, are also associated with the risk of cardiotoxicity".
Additionally, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, genetic preposition, a malignant disease associated with the amyloid deposited on the heart or other organs, high blood pressure, untreated hyperthyroidism, and vitamin b2 deficiency are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with cardiotoxicity.
Depending on the cells of the areas of the heart that have been damaged, cardiac toxicity includes
* Cardiomyopathy is a disorder caused a weaken or damage of heart muscle, affecting the heart rhythm or inducing the risk of heart failure.
* Myocarditis is a condition of inflammation of the heart, that can lead to changes in heart rhythm or heart failure.
* Pericarditis is a condition caused by the inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart, inducing chest pain or heart failure.
* Acute coronary syndromes that affect the blood flow due to blood vessel damage.
* Congestive heart failure is a result that affects the function of the heart in pumping blood throughout the body.
Most common symptoms of cardiotoxicity are associated with not enough blood circulation in the body such as tiredness and fatigue, a long-term (chronic) cough, shortness of breath, floating due to the enlarged heart muscle, abnormal heart or lung sounds and swelling in your hands, feet, or unusual weight gain.
Conventionally, treatment of cardiotoxicity is totally depending on the types of the disease including
Beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors induce (widen) the arterial dilation and improvement of the blood flow and diuretics.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the protective effect of cranberry extract (CRAN) against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in an animal model.
According to the results of rats were given CRAN orally (100mg/kg/day for 10 consecutive days) and DOX (15mg/kg; i.p.) for 7 days, CRAN protected the heart function against DOX-induced increased mortality and ECG changes.
The reduced levels of antioxidants enzymes and increased oxidative stress in the cardiac tissues induced by DOX such as glutathione (GSH) depletion and oxidized glutathione (GSSG), malondialdehyde (MDA), and protein carbonyls were significantly inhibited by the administration of CRAN.
Furthermore, the reduced cardiac activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione reductase (GR) induced by DOX were also inhibited by CRAN.
Moreover, CRAN also improved the cardiac myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity against infection compared to untreated rats.
Most important, CRAN also normalized the levels of enzymes associated with cardio muscle damage and injury casued by DOX such as troponin I, creatine phosphokinase (CK), and creatine kinase-MB.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "CRAN alleviated histopathological changes in rats' hearts treated with DOX. In conclusion, CRAN protects against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in rats".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the protection of cardiovascular toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Betaxanthins Block the Gene Associated with Colon Cancer Developing
Primary cancer is a class of chronic disease caused by cells growth disorderly and irregularly in the tissue of a specific organ as a result of the alternation of DNA.
Colon formed part of the digestive system including large intestine that connects to the small intestines and rectum plays a critical role to reabsorb fluids and process waste products from the body and prepare for its elimination through the rectum.
Colon cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly due to the alternation of DNA in the colon tissue.
Most cases of colon cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through proliferating.
However, at the advanced stage, the cancerous colon cells in the colon can travel a distance far away to infect other healthy tissue and organ.
Furthermore, at this stage, the overgrowth can cause localized severe pain and bleeding as the proliferation of cancer have suppressed the nearby nerve cells and blood vessels, accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
Researchers do not know the exact causes of the disease. A history of polyps, ethnicity, high-fat diet and low fiber, aging, the long-term infection of colon diseases are some of the prevalent risk factors associated with the onset and progression of colon cancer.
Believe it or not, colon cancer is the most slowing cancer and proliferates in a predictable way. In some patients, cancer cells can present in the colon more than 20 years before being diagnosed.
Out of that group of risk factors, the increase in age has been under intensified studies by many scientists.
According to the statistic, colorectal cancer is the third common cancer in the US. The median age at diagnosis for colon cancer is 68 in men and 72 in women.
In other words, most cases of colon cancer are found in the aging population in the US.
Early diagnosis of colon cancer can increase the 5 years of survival rate. Truly, in the 39% of colon cancer diagnosed at the localized-stage disease, the five and ten years survival rate are 90%.
Dr. and colleagues wrote, "Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. As society ages, the number of elderly patients with CRC will increase. The percentage of patients with right-sided colon cancer and the incidence of microsatellite instability is higher in elderly than in younger patients with CRC.".
And, "Moreover, the higher incidence of comorbid diseases in elderly patients indicates the need for less invasive treatment strategies".
These results furtherly confirm the prognosis of colon cancer in the aging population. However, most aging population do not develop colon cancer.
Betaxanthins are Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.
With an aim to find a potent compound for the promotion of colon health, researchers examined the effects of indicaxanthin, a constituent of betaxanthins on the human colon cancer cell line CACO2.
In colon cancer lines induced demethylation, the chemical process that causes the removal of a methyl group (CH3) to initiate some methylation-silenced onco-suppressor genes involved in colorectal carcinogenesis, indicaxanthin exhibited anti-proliferative activity in all cell lines but HT29 and cancer cell line involved in hypermethylated tumor-suppressor genes(SFRP1 and HPP1).
Furthermore, although DNMT gene expression that provides instructions for making an enzyme called DNA methyltransferase 1 were increased by the injection of indicaxanthin, observed by the increased the expression of genes involved in DNA demethylation, its activity associated with gene suppression was inhibited by the phytochemical.
The results strongly suggested that indicaxanthin exerts a stable binding of the DNMT1 undergoing a chemical reaction against the initiation of colon cancer cell proliferation.
Taken altogether, Betaxanthins processed the abundantly indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Inhibits Parameters Induced Post Myocardial Infarction Complication
Acute brain infarction is the severe and medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing local death of the neurons in the brain. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential complications.
The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are asscoaited with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.
In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.
The exact causes of a blood clot to induce acute brain infarction are unknown. However, the trouble with speaking and understanding, confusion, sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in your face, arm or leg, headache and the trouble with walking are some of the most common symptoms found in patients with post-myocardial infarction.
Depending on the severity of the acute infarction, in serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms, paralysis of the face, arm or leg, trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.
Although, there are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction. some researchers suggested aging may have a strong and negative implication on acute infarction.
Dr. Amelia Carro, the lead scientist wrote, "Data from 163,140 hospital admissions of Medicare beneficiaries age > or =65 years between 1994 and 1996 with AMI at U.S. hospitals were evaluated for differences in clinical characteristics and mortality across five age-based strata (in years): 65 to 69, 70 to 74, 75 to 79, 80 to 84 and > or =85".
And, "Our data indicate significant age-associated differences in clinical characteristics in elderly patients with AMI, which account for some of the age-associated differences in mortality".
Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas.
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment in the post-heart attack, researchers examined supplementation on cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI).
The study included male Wistar rats assigned randomly into four groups: the sham group (animals that underwent simulated surgery) that received a standard chow (S; n=18), the infarcted group that received a standard chow (MI; n=13), the infarcted group supplemented with lycopene (1 mg of lycopene/kg body weight/day) (MIL; n=16) and the infarcted group supplemented with tomato (MIT; n=16).
At the end of 3 months of the experiment, based on the assay analysis, researchers found that* The groups MIL and MIT showed decreased interstitial fibrosis induced by infarction.
* Tomato treated group attenuated the hypertrophy induced by MI.
* Lycopene reduced the expression of proteins and pathway associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TGF-β1, and NF-κB and TNF-α respectively, collagen I, collagen III associated with the initiation of fibrous tissues.
* Most importantly, lycopene also ameliorated the level of ventricular remodeling post-MI.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Lycopene may inhibit the NF-κB signaling pathway thereby reducing the inflammatory response and cardiomyocyte apoptosis post-MI, which could be a key mechanism of lycopene in attenuating ventricular remodeling".
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the and treatment of in cardio-remodeling in post-myocardial infarction, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Yoga In Reduced Physical and Psychological Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease
People who participated in yoga class have a profound and positive impact in reduced symptoms of Parkinson's disease, a renowned study suggested.
Yoga, the accident technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
Parkinson's disease is a condition affected motor and nonmotor functions and causes severe debility and poor quality of life, a recent study suggested.
According to statistic, approximately one million are living with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the U.S.
Every year, over 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with PD.
And, if you are men, you are 1.5 times more likely to have Parkinson's disease compared to women.
In the discussion with 28 experienced yoga experts, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria, selected validating the content of the integrated yoga module(IYM) for PD, researchers found that 21 out of 28 exhibited significant content validity by applying Lawshe's formula for the content validity ratio (CVR) of 0.42.
Additionally, in a randomized controlled pilot study investigated the effectiveness of yoga intervention on physiological and health-related QOL measures in people with PD with 13 people with stage 1-2 PD randomized to either a yoga (n = 8) or a control group (n = 5) and the yoga group participated in twice-weekly yoga sessions for 12 weeks, searchers found that yoga participants demonstrate a significant improvement in Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS)scores, improved diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.036) and average forced vital capacity (P = 0.03) over time, in compared to control.
Furthermore, researchers also indicated that the yoga group expressed positive trends of improvement in depression scores (P = 0.056), body weight (P = 0.056) and forced expiratory volume (P = 0.059).
More profoundly, Yoga participants reported more positive symptom changes including immediate tremor reduction in compared to the control group. Collectively, yoga significantly improves aspects of QOL and physiological functions in stages 1-2 PD patients.
Importantly, in support of the above differentiation, the California State University, in the measuring the effect of an eight-week adaptive yoga program on the physical and psychological status of individuals with Parkinson's disease pilot study suggested, after assessing the result of 10 participants with a Hoehn and Yahr stage of 2 or 3 prior to and after an 8-week control phase and again after they underwent an 8-week adaptive yoga program scientists suggested that yoga participants not only reduced expression of depression, anxiety in both gender, but also enhanced sit-and-reach flexibility in male participants in compared to female counterparts.
In younger participants, yoga showed an enormous improvement of the Single-Leg Balance test(SLB) time after the intervention.
Indeed, in the compare the effects of power training (PWT) and a high-speed yoga program on physical performances in older patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), researchers indicated that both yoga program and PWT programs can significantly improve physical performance in older persons with PD.
In other words, Dr. Ni M, the led author said, "both training groups showed significant improvements (P<.05) in all physical measurements except functional reach on the more affected side, SLS, and postural sway compared with the pretests, and significantly better scores for UPDRSMS, BBS, Mini-BESTest, Timed Up and Go, functional reach on the less affected side".
Taking all together, yoga no doubt has a fabulous effect in improving both physical and psychological symptoms in the early stage of Parkinson's disease. Some researchers even suggested that yoga may be used as an integrated form of exercise conventionally with conventional therapy.

Antioxidant Indicaxanthin Prevent the Risk of Atheromas
An atheroma, or atheromatous plaque ("plaque"), is an abnormal accumulation of plaque in the inner layer of the wall of an artery, found in most adults, a leading cause of atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis is a condition caused by long-term plaques built-up on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries, a major cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD)
CVD is a medical condition involved in blood vessels. CVD can be heart disease or stroke depending on the location of a blood clot which causes blockage of the blood flow in the artery.
According to the statistics provided by the Europeanean Hear Network, cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes 3.9 million deaths in Europe and over 1.8 million deaths in the European Union (EU) every year. In 2015, approximately, 11.3 million new cases of CVD in Europe and 6.1 million new cases of CVD in the EU were diagnosed.
Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.
Atheromatous plaques build-up in the arteries can be classified into several stages, including
* Stage 1 is the foam cells of macrophage and fatty deposits are localized on blood vessel walls.
* Stage 2 Type II is various thread-like fibers or filaments accumulated on the arterial wall.
* Stage 3 is connective tissue deposition on the arteries is thicker.
The stage 1-3 are most frequently found in patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, and who smoke.
* The stage 4 and 5 Type IV and V are conditions that the softer plaque with a thinner fibrous cap containing macrophages and smooth muscle cells are formed.
Atherosclerosis at the early stage is assymptomatic. However, in stage 4 and 5, patients may experience symptoms of chest pain, pain in your leg, arm, particularly in the area of a blocked artery, shortness of breath, fatigue muscle weakness due to reduce blood flow in the artery.
Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
On finding a potent compound for the treament of atheromas, 7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC)-induced apoptosis of macrophages is considered a key event in the development of human atheromas.
In human atheromatous plaque-induced by the 7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC), researchers found that* The induction of atheromatous plaque within 24 h pf injection of 7-KC was associated with the induced cytotoxicity by elevating the expression of intracellular reactive oxygen species over basal levels.
* Furthermore, levels of preceding NADPH oxidase-4 (NOX-4) over-expression and elevation of cytosolic Ca²⁺ associated with an imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants were also induced by the administration of 7-KC.
* Moreover, the progressive depletion of total thiols that cause oxidative stress was also promoted by the 7-KC.
* Additionally, the redox-sensitive NF-κB involved in the inhibition of oxidation was also de-promoted by 7-KC activation.
* Co-incubation of 2·5 μm of Ind not only completely prevented 7-KC-induced pro-apoptosis in the tested cells but also decreased the parameters that lead to the risk of atheromas.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "( Indicaxanthin( a highly bioavailable dietary phytochemical, may exert protective effects against atherogenesis toxicity of 7-KC at a concentration of nutritional interest".
Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of atheromas, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Destroys Liver Cancer Cells In Vitro
Liver formed part of the detoxed organs in the human body is the largest internal organ that filters the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.
The liver also plays an essential role to produce cholesterol to build a strong cell wall, steroid hormones, and vitamin D and aid the digestive function in food absorption and detoxify toxic chemicals and metabolizes drugs.
Liver disease is a process of reduced function of the liver acutely or gradually.
According to the Canadian Liver Foundation, approximately one in ten Canadians, or more than 3 million people in Canada has some forms of liver disease. 95% of deaths from liver disease are due to chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer, including 25% of obese patients.
Compared to cancer caused by irregular cell growth in specific tissues of an organ, liver cancer precisely is caused by uncontrolled cell growth in the liver tissue that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the liver.
At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell in the primary liver cancer can travel a distance away to infect other nearby healthy tissue or organ, via blood and fluid circulation, leading to secondary metastasis.
Liver cancer is caused by the alternation of liver cell DNA. Because of lower nerve tissue, most patients in the very early stage of liver cancer are assymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms upper abdominal pain, general weakness, abdominal swelling, jaundice and white, chalky stools accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
Liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.
The 5-year survival rate of 44% of people diagnosed in the early stage of liver cancer only is 31%., comapred to 90% and 100% of colon and breast cancer, respectively.
Some researchers suggested long-term excessive alcohol use has been linked to an increased risk of liver cancer and worse prognosis comapred to other forms of liver cancer
"Liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with hepatitis B and C infections being the main causes".
"Alcohol abuse and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are other dominant risk factors. Due to improvements in the treatment of hepatitis infections and increased alcohol consumption in some regions, it is likely that alcohol will become a leading cause of liver cancer".
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On the finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers investigated the antioxidant and apoptotic inductive effects of Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) leaf extract ((ASH-WX; 6.25 mg/ml-100 mg/ml)) against a hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2cells).
According to the tested differentiation, ASH-WX injection demonstrated increased cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells compared to untreated control with IC50 of 5% (approximately 5.0 mg/ml).
ASH-WX also exerted strong antioxidant activities by increasing the levels of Fas-ligand associated with cell death programming and matrixes involved regulating of cancer cell migration, invasion, and metastasis and decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory induced systemic inflammation.
Furthermore, the extracts were also found to interact with cyclin D1, an important regulator of cell cycle progression.
More precisely, ASH-WX induced cell death in HepG2cells was found to increase significant accumulation in the G0/G1 and G2/M phases compared to the control and untreated cells.
In other words, ASH-WX blocked the proliferation through cell cycle arrest.
Based on the results, researchers said, "Ashwagandha could be a powerful antioxidant and a promising anticancer agent against HCC".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of liver cancer, pending to larger sample size and multicenter study.

Indicaxanthin Kills Colorectal Cancer Cells In Vitro
The bowel formed a lower part of the digestive system consists of the small bowel (or small intestine) and the large bowel(colon and rectum).
The large bowel plays an essential role to absorb water, restore and remove waste.
Cancer is a class of medical condition caused alternation of cell DNA that starts on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of a specific organ. Compared to a benign tumor, invasive tumor cells at the advanced stage can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue through blood and fluid circulation.
Colorectal Cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly in the tissues of colon or rectum.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society in 2019, approximately
101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.
Furthermore, the overall, lifetime risk colorectal cancer of developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer. It is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the U.S. and Canada.
Most patients with colorectal cancer at the early stage are assymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage patients might experience symptoms of changes in bowel habits, narrow stools, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, intermittent, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulosis, peptic ulcer disease, abdominal pain, accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
Conventionally, treatment of colorectal cancer is totally depending on the stage of cancer, including localized(0), regional (1) and distance spread cancer (2 - nearby tissue, 3 - spread to the lymph node, 4, spread to organs and tissues)
Most common types of colorectal cancer are Adenocarcinomas which are originated in the surface of the inner layer that line the cavities and organs of the body.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer, researchers examined the effect of the aqueous extract and of its betalain pigment indicaxanthin (Ind), on the proliferation of human colorectal cancer Caco-2 cells.
According to the tested assays, administration of whole extract and Ind exerted a strong activity to induce apoptosis and anti-proliferation at nutritionally relevant amounts, with IC50 400±25 mg fresh pulp equivalents/mL, and 115±15 μM (n=9), respectively at a dose-dependent manner.
More importantly, the inhibited of colorectal cancer cells by whole extract and Ind without causing toxicity for post-confluent differentiated cells.
In chemical analysis, Ind was found to account for ∼80% of the effect of the whole extract. Ind did cause oxidative stress in proliferating Caco-2 cells.
Furthermore, Ind was found to act as a de-methylation of the tumor suppressor p16(INK4a) gene promoter, in the activation of cell cycle arrest in the G2/M-phase in the tested cell line.
More precisely, Ind kills cancer cells by decreasing hyper-phosphorylated associated with cell cycle division and promoting hypo-phosphorylated associated with cell cycle arrest without alternating the cell division enzyme cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CD4).
Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Yoga, The Integrate Form of Exercise In the Prevention and Treatment of Maternal Anxiety
Yoga may be used as a potential treatment in reduced anxiety in maternal women, a study by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec suggested.
Maternal anxiety is a condition which appears during pregnancy characterized by a state of excessive uneasiness and apprehension, typically with compulsive behavior or panic attacks.
Some researchers suggested that anxiety may be attributed to the overreaction of the sympathetic nervous system that has a function to prepare our body for emergency and the conscious or even unconscious mind in cases of a need for defense.
The reaction sympathetic nervous system causes overproduction of certain hormones which in turn, induce the imbalance of the stress hormones in the body such as adrenaline and cortisol, and the precursor hormone DHEA, affecting a person psychological wellbeing in the initiation of anxiety.
Researchers do not know why some people are susceptible to the risk of anxiety, while others do not. However, they do know certain factors such as gene inherited from the parents, family history, gender and people with stressful and traumatic life experiences and people who are drugs abusers are associated with increased risk of anxiety.
Most symptoms of maternal anxiety include feeling unable to cope. very alone and frightened. depressed. disconnected from self and/or the baby. anxious about the baby. and seeing everything as stressful. particularly a feeling of not able to “let go” and relax.
In some women, irreparable effects of anxiety during pregnancy can change pregnancy into an unpleasant event of women’s life, affecting some serious effects in the offspring’s health.
Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture.....
The technique has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia, due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
In the review of literature posted in Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (30 November 2010), MEDLINE (1950 to 30 November 2010), EMBASE (1974 to 30 November 2010), the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) (1 December 2010), ClinicalTrials.gov (December 2010) and Current Controlled Trials (1 December 2010) involving pregnant women of any age at any time from conception to one month after birth, researchers found that * In compared with usual care, yoga and other techniques with mind-body interventions in one study with 133 women expressed a positive effect on anxiety during labor decreasing anxiety at the early and middle stages of labor.
* Another study also suggested that yoga and other techniques with mind-body interventions had a positive effect on anxiety and depression in the immediate postpartum period
Dr. Marc I, the lead author said, "Mind-body interventions might benefit women's anxiety during pregnancy" and " there is some but no strong evidence for the effectiveness of mind-body interventions for the management of anxiety during pregnancy".
Even with these favorable outcomes, researchers in the review still concern of the small number of studies per intervention and to the diversity of outcome measurements with no meta-analysis.
Other, also in the review of literature from in four major electronic databases: CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, and EMBASE using Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines with 13 publications met inclusion criteria and selected. researchers indicated that most studies expressed a generally effective in reducing anxiety in pregnant women participated in yoga class.
Not only that, Dr. Sheffield KM, the lead author said, " The use of yoga in the perinatal period shows promise in improving mental health and well-being for women and infants".
Truly, yoga meditation and mindfulness only calm the nervous system in the modulation of hormones production without inducing overexpression of certain hormones which may cause anxiety but also
bring the prenatal mother back to the present and deal the situation in a thoughtful way.
These results may restore the feeling of joy, connection with the baby, the happiness that the baby will bring, the pleasure to have a baby and a feeling of comfort in the belly that carries the baby, etc.
In support of the above analysis, a joint study conducted by the University of Manchester in 59 primiparous, low-risk pregnant women completed questionnaires assessing state (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; STAI-State), trait (STAI-Trait), and pregnancy-specific anxiety (Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire; WDEQ) and depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale; EPDS) before randomization (baseline) to either an 8-week course of antenatal yoga or treatment-as-usual (TAU); both groups repeated the questionnaires at follow-up, showed that
* Compared to the control group, yoga participated group in one single class showed to reduce both subjective and physiological measures of state anxiety (STAI-S and cortisol), and
* This single class-induced reduction remained through the final session of the intervention
* Yoga group also improved the reduction in WDEQ score
After adjusting to other risk factors, researchers said, " Antenatal yoga seems to be useful for reducing women's anxieties toward childbirth and preventing increases in depressive symptomatology".
Taking all together, there is no doubt that yoga may be considered a potential and therapeutic treatment in reducing risk and symptoms and treatment of anxiety maternally.

Cranberry, the Potent Free Radical Scavenger
Free radicals are highly reactive atoms associated with an unpaired electron in the outermost ring produced internally by our body cell metabolism and externally by the environmental factors, including the air which we breathe and the food we eat.
In other words, any chemicals compounds or molecules which process oxygen atom can be free radicals after chemical interaction.
Believe it or not, free radical in moderate amount is important for our body functions such as NO cardio-vessel relaxation. However, in high levels, free radicals have been found epidemiologically to damage the lipid, and protein and induce the alternation of healthy cell DNA.
Out of all damages caused by overexpression of free radicals, some researchers suggested that lipid peroxidation induced by free radical has a strong implication in the pathogenesis of various disorders and diseases, including free radical-mediated chain reaction, enzyme-mediated oxidation, and nonradical, non-enzymatic oxidation.
These chain of reaction can not be stopped until the electrons on the outermost ring of free radical are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Free radical scavengers are antioxidants that process a specific function to prevent the forming of free radicals by removing them before they can damage vital components of the cell.
Dr. Slemmer JE, the lead scientist in the examination of free radical scavengers for the treatment of stroke wrote, "The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) is a common underlying mechanism of many neuropathologies, as they have been shown to damage various cellular components, including proteins, lipids, and DNA".
And "several acute and chronic pharmacological therapies that have been extensively studied in order to reduce ROS/RNS loads in cells and the subsequent oxidative stress, so-called "free-radical scavengers".
These results strongly suggested that antioxidants with free radical scavenging activity protect the body against the damage of various cellular components, including proteins, lipids, and DNA alternation in the initiation of diseases.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the cranberry antioxidative and protective effects of cranberry flavonoids in free radical-generating systems on mitochondrial ultrastructure.
In radical-generating systems, cranberry flavonoids effectively inhibit the generation of free radical nitric oxide (IC50 = 4.4 ± 0.4 µg/ml), superoxide anion radicals (IC50 = 2.8 ± 0.3 µg/ml) and hydroxyl radicals (IC50 = 53 ± 4 µg/ml).
1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals (DPPH) was scavenged at the concentration of 2.2 ± 0.3 µg/ml with the IC50.
Furthermore, cranberry flavonoids exerted the antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity against lipid peroxidation in liposomal membranes and glutathione oxidation in erythrocytes induced by UV irradiation or organic hydroperoxides.
Moreover, the phytochemical compound also decreased the rigidity of the outer leaflet of the liposomal membranes.
In the liver, cranberry flavonoids also displayed hepatoprotective potential by preventing rat liver mitochondrial damage.
Collectively, researchers said, "The mitochondria-addressed effects of flavonoids might be related both to radical-scavenging properties and modulation of various mitochondrial events".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered free radical scavenging remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Yoga Therapy In the Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases
Yoga therapy may have a strong impact in reducing the risk of inflammation by significantly decreased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, a US university study suggested.
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in the stimulation of the production of inflammatory cytokines with an aim to protect our body against infectious agents in the acute phase of bodily injury and tissue damage.
However, in many instances, overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines can cause cells death and tissue damage, leading to irreversible organs damage with large scars formation.
For example, overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the healing of hepatitis virus infection can lead to liver scars.
Furthermore, inflammation that lasts more than 3 months may be considered chronic inflammation, a leading cause of chronic diseases.
Chronic inflammation occurs when the immune system no longer has the ability to kill off all the infectious agents, during the onset of acute infection.
Moreover, chronic inflammation also happens in people with autoimmune disorder. In this case, the immune system attacks the bodily normal healthy tissue, by mistaking them for foreign pathogens that cause disease.
Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture.....
The practice has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
In a randomized controlled 3-month trial conducted with two post-treatment assessments of 200 breast cancer survivors assigned to either 12 weeks of 90-minute twice per week hatha yoga classes or a wait-list control researchers at The Ohio State University showed that
* Yoga demonstrated significantly reduced proteins in the production of pro-inflammatory expression, namely IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β in compared to the control group.
* Inflammation-induced lower levels of energy also reduced such as fatigue and improved vitality after 3 months of engagement but not at the beginning of the class.
Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser JK, the led author said, "Chronic inflammation may fuel declines in physical function leading to frailty and disability. If yoga dampens or limits both fatigue and inflammation".
Truly, yoga practice calms the central nervous system against the onset of psychological stress which in turn, decrease the production of stress hormones in compromising the immune system.
Yoga practice has a direct impact on the calming of the nervous system, in turn, improves the immune system in the correct differentiation of its response against foreign pathogens. thus, reducing the risk of autoimmune disease and overproduction of inflammatory cytokines in initiating chronic inflammatory diseases.
Other researchers in the concerns of global obesity prevalence and overexpression of tissue and circulating inflammatory biomolecules in these group of the population may cause vascular inflammation and atherogenesis, and subsequently, cardiovascular disease developing postulated that yoga-based lifestyle intervention may be used as a promising option,
* In reducing the weight of obesity that decreases the risk of the onset of inflammatory diseases.
* In reducing the risk of chronic diseases as inflammation may be prevented and managed through a change of lifestyle
The study also emphasized that yoga therapy is simple to follow and cost-effective with high compliance. therefore, it may be recommended as a secondary treatment combined with the standard application.
Furthermore, Dr. Sarvottam K, the led author said, "The efficacy of such lifestyle intervention programs is multifaceted and is achieved via a reduction in weight, obesity-related inflammation on and stress, thereby culminating into risk reduction towards several chronic diseases including CVD".
By bringing back the presence and dealing it in a positive way, long-term yoga participants may choose to improve immune function through the change of diet and lifestyle to combat chronic inflammatory diseases.
More interestingly, in a proposed study of 16 breast cancer survivors with persistent cancer-related fatigue randomized to a 12-week Iyengar yoga intervention (n=16) or a 12-week health education control condition (n=15), researchers indicated that
* Yoga treatment group expressed a reduced production of pro-inflammatory transcription including, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and increased activity of the anti-inflammatory cytokines such as glucocorticoid receptor.... compared to control.
* All inflammatory markers, such as soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor type II (sTNF-RII) were lower in yoga therapy group compared to the increase in the educational group.
Dr. Bower JE the led author opinionated, Yoga participated improved the lower level of energy caused by inflammation-related gene expression in breast cancer survivors with persistent probably through enhancing behavioral and physical health after 12 weeks.
Taking all together, Yoga may be considered as an integrated form of exercise in reduced risk and treatment of inflammation-inducing poor behavioral and physical activities.

Onion, a Natural Treatment of Endothelial Dysfunction
The endothelium is the lining of the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. In other words, endothelium formed an interface to separate the circulating blood or lymph in the lumen and the rest of the vessel wall.
The endothelium processes some main functions, inclduing acting as a semi-selective barrier between the vessel lumen and surrounding tissue and transporting white blood cells into and out of the bloodstream.
Endothelial dysfunction is a medical condition that reduces the function of the endothelium caused by the failure of the endothelial inner lining of the small arteries to function normally, affecting the cardio-functioning.
Epidemiologically, endothelial dysfunction has been found to induce cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease (CAD), hypertension, and diastolic dysfunction.
The causes of endothelial dysfunction are associated with a low level of free radical NO that modulates vascular tone and endothelial function.
Endothelial dysfunction caused by reduced levels of NO in the body induces excess vasoconstriction of blood vessels, increases the risk of platelets activation and inflammation of the arterial wall and stimulates lipid peroxidation, leading to the complications of hypertension and coagulation.
Dr. Tousoulis D, the lead scientist wrote, " This substance (Nitric oxide (NO)) ....has a wide range of biological properties that maintain vascular homeostasis, including modulation of vascular dilator tone, regulation of local cell growth, and protection of the vessel from injurious consequences of platelets and cells circulating in blood, playing in this way a crucial role in the normal endothelial function'.
And, "A growing list of conditions (associated with reduced levels of NO), including those commonly associated as risk factors for atherosclerosis such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, diabetes mellitus, and heart failure are associated with the diminished release of nitric oxide into the arterial wall either because of impaired synthesis or excessive oxidative degradation".
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of endothelial dysfunction researchers examined the effect of consumption of onion peel extract (OPE) on endothelial function in healthy overweight and obese individuals.
72 healthy overweight and obese participants included in the randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study were randomly assigned to receive a red, soft capsule of OPE (100 mg quercetin/d, 50 mg quercetin twice daily; n = 36 participants) or an identical placebo capsule (n = 36) for 12 weeks.
According to the tested analysis and compared with baseline values, the OPE group showed significantly improved flow-mediated dilation (FMD) associated with increased blood flow in the artery at 12 wk, from 12.5 ± 5.2 to 15.2 ± 6.1, compared to the placebo group.
Furthermore, the circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) involved in the cells of bone marrow that enter the vasculature by circulating angiogenic factors were significantly increased in the OPE group, compared to no change in the placebo group.
In the OPE group, there was no change of nitroglycerin-mediated dilation associated with impaired arterial dilatation response compared to the placebo group.
In the comparison of the endothelial dysfunction on the lowest quartile (cutoff value, 8.6%), the FMD improved from 26% to 9% by OPE.
These results display a strong effect of OPE in the promotion of endothelial function through many aspects of the overweight and obese participants.
Based on the results, researchers suggested, "Medium-term administration of OPE an improvement in FMD and circulating EPCs".
Taken altogether, onion processed a higher mount of onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of endothelial dysfunction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Potential Anti-Colon Cancer Functional Food
Scientists may have found a sweet functional food that processes a potential for the prevention and treatment of cancer, some studies suggested.
Cancers are the group of chronic diseases, caused by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in some specific tissue and organs.
Most primary cancers start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissue caused the alternation of DNA.
At the later stage, after penetrating deep in the tissue of the infected organs, most primary cancer can travel a distance away from the original site to damage other healthy tissue and organs.
As they grow large enough, they can also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, causing severe pain and localized symptoms.
Researchers do not know the exact causes of colon cancer. Neither they know why some people with the same health conditions, diet pattern and ethnicity and family history, some are susceptible to the early onset of the diseases, while many others do not.
Most common risk factors, epidemiologically are associated with the types of cancer. The National Cancer Institute suggested that aging, tobacco, long-term sun and radiation exposure, chemicals and other substances, some viruses and bacteria, certain hormones, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight are the common causes of cancer.
In the challenges, the idea that cancer cannot be prevented among older adults, researchers at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion launched a study by examining different aspects of the relationship between age and cancer said, "Although the sequential patterns of aging cannot be changed, several age-related factors that contribute to disease risk can be".
What are the age-related factors that contribute to cancer be changed? researchers continued. "For most adults, age is coincidentally associated with preventable chronic conditions, avoidable exposures, and modifiable risk behaviors that are causally associated with cancer", and "current evidence suggests that for most adults, cancer does not have to be an inevitable consequence of growing older. Interventions that support healthy environments, help people manage chronic conditions, and promote healthy behaviors may help people make a healthier transition from midlife to older age and reduce the likelihood of developing cancer:
These results furtherly emphasized the needs to prevent chronic diseases and support a healthy environment and promote a healthy lifestyle in the transition from midlife to the older age are most important factors that can reduce substantially the risk of cancer.
Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient without side effects for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, launch an investigation to examine the anti-tumor and anti-inflammation properties of crude ginger extract and Gelam honey against many types of cancer, including colorectal cancer.
The cells used in the experiment were divided into 4 groups: the first group represents HT29 cells without treatment, the second and third groups were cells treated singly with either ginger or Gelam honey, respectively, and the last group represents cells treated with ginger and Gelam honey combined.
Combined ginger and Gelam honey treatment stimulated the early cell death response through enhancing the function of proteins associated with programming cell death, namely, the caspase 9 and IκB genes and inhibiting the function of proteins associated with cells proliferation.
The IC50 of ginger and Gelam honey alone were 5.2 mg/ml and 80 mg/ml, respectively also demonstrated similar efficacy as of the IC50 of the combination treatment of 3 mg/ml of ginger plus 27 mg/ml of Gelam honey.
These results suggest ginger and Gelam honey used alone or a combination may be an effective chemopreventive and therapeutic strategy for inducing the death of colon cancer cells.
Further differentiation of the anti-proliferative effects of ginger and Gelam honey and their efficacy in enhancing the anti-cancer effects of 5-FU (5-fluorouracil) against a colorectal cancer cell line, HCT 116. researchers showed that
* Ginger (IC50 of 3mg/mL) is more potent than the Gelam honey (IC50 of 75 mg/mL) in inhibiting the growth of HCT 116 cells.
* Combined treatment (35 mg/mL) of the two compounds (3mg/mL ginger+75 mg/mL Gelam honey) synergistically lowered the IC50 of Gelam honey to 22 mg/mL without reducing the inhibitory effect against colon cancer cell line.
* Gelam honey markedly enhanced 5-FU inhibiting effects on the growth of HCT 116 cells.
Subsequent analysis on the induction of cellular apoptosis also suggested the individual treatment of ginger and Gelam honey produced higher apoptosis compared to 5-FU alone.
These results once against suggested that Gelam honey and ginger extract used alone or combination could potentially enhance the chemotherapeutic effect of 5-FU against colorectal cancer.
Taken altogether, honey used alone or combined with ginger might process significant and profound effects in reducing the risk of colon cancer and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of colon cancer.
However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of honey anti-cancer possibilities.

Herbal Turmeric and Supplemental Copper Suppress the Oral Cancer Progression
Oral cancer is a medical condition caused by any malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva) and the roof of the mouth (palate).
Oral cancer can be classified depending on the types of cells that cause the onset including
* Squamous cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common types of oral cancer, accounting for over 90% of all cases and arise from the squamous cell layer in the lining of the oral cavity and oropharynx.
* Verrucous carcinoma
The low grade and rarely spread verrucous carcinoma is uncommon cancer, accounting only to an approximate 5% of all cases, but it can spread deeply into the surrounding tissue.
* Minor salivary gland cancers
The cancer is originated from the salivary gland accounting for less than 1% of all cases.
The grades of oral cancer are depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancer indicates otherwise.
Most prevalent factors associated with a higher risk of oral cancer are tobacco use including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, and snuff, among others.
Some researchers suggested that heavy alcohol use also in one of the most common risks of oral cancer.
Dr. Binh Y. Goldstein the lead scientist wrote, "The evidence for the human carcinogenic effects of alcohol drinking on the risk of cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx has been considered sufficient in the IARC Monograph 44 on alcohol and cancer in 1988".
And, "Generally, the dominant type of alcohol consumption in each population is associated with the greatest increases in risk. A large number of studies on joint exposure of alcohol and tobacco consumption demonstrate a more than multiplicative synergistic effect".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of curcumin found abundantly in turmeric on intracellular copper levels that affect the sensitivity of oral cancer cells.
According to the differentiation of intracellular copper levels and response to curcumin treatment in a panel of OSCC cell lines derived from oral cancer patients, the concentrations that inhibited 50% OSCC cell viability (IC50) of curcumin was reduced up to 5 times in the presence of 250 µM copper.
Furthermore, increased copper level in curcumin-treated OSCC cells exerted a significant effect in increased levels of intracellular ROS and Nrf2 which regulates oxidative stress responses in the cancer cells.
Moreover, supplemental copper also inhibited migration of curcumin-treated cells by suppressing epithelial-mesenchymal transition in the promotion of cancer cells metastasis.
Interestingly, early apoptosis in combined treatment is not found in treatment with curcumin or copper alone.
In other words, copper and curcumin work synergistically to induce cancer cell death, compared to no effect in either alone treatment.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Supplement of copper significantly enhanced the inhibitory effect of curcumin treatment on migration and viability of oral cancer cells".
Taken altogether, curcumin found abundantly turmeric may be combined with the copper supplement for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Broccoli, Processes Depressant-Like Property
Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting physical and mental functions of patients, including the patients feeling, thinking and acting.
Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
There is no exact cause of depression. Changes in hormone levels, medical conditions, stress, grief or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with depression.
Most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.
In severe case, some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering and thoughts of harming his or herself.
According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression of Association of American, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.
Conventionally, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is the primary medication for the treatment of depression due to its relatively lower side effects comapred to depressants. Other types of antidepression medication may include serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), typical antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Dr. Steven S. Clevenger and colleagues in examining the role of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the relapse risk of major depressive disorder wrote, "According to the included studies, the relapse risk in adults was lower when SSRIs were combined with psychotherapy".
And, " the combination of SSRIs and cognitive behavioral therapy may effectively reduce relapse. Escitalopram appeared to yield better results and fewer side effects than did other SSRIs or SNRIs".
On finding a potent compound which process depressant-like activity, researchers examined the effects of Sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate compound derived from broccoli on inflammation-related depressive symptoms.
On lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 0.5 mg/kg) induced depression-like behavior in mice, pretreatment SFN showed a significant effect in the blockage of the increase in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokine (tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)) level and an increase in microglial activation of the brain associated with the inflammatory response by increasing the expression anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.
Activation of microglia is a hallmark of brain diseases.
In the tail suspension test and forced swimming test, immotility caused by LPS of the tested mice was also attenuated by the injection of SFN.
Degeneration of the cognition in the brain caused by the alternation of the density of the proteins associated with the brain functioning due to the LPS was also restored by the SFN.
More importantly, dietary intake of 0.1% glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate precursor of SFN) food in the juvenile and adolescence has been found to prevent the risk of LPS-induced depression-like behaviors and dendritic spine changes in the brain regions at adulthood.
In other words, SFN isolated from the rich broccoli sprout exhibited depressant-like activity was attributed to the anti-inflammatory property.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "supplementation of SFN-rich broccoli sprout could be a prophylactic vegetable to prevent or minimize the relapse by inflammation in the remission state of depressed patients".
Taken altogether, broccoli sprout with rich of SFN may be considered a functional food for the treatment of depression, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
