Herbal Turmeric Protects the Neurons Function Against Parkinson's disease

Dementia is a medical and neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of mental ability, that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease (PD), the most common types of dementia in aging people.

Dementia accounts for 5-8% of all people over the age of 65, and this number doubles every five years.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a type of dementia that affects the nerve cells associated with the production of dopamine in the brain, leading to muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait.

Epidemiologically aging, gender, long-term exposure to certain toxic chemicals and genetic deposition are some of the prevalent factors involved in the increased risk of the disease.

Some researchers in the examination of the dietary habits in different parts of the world suggested that people who drink green tea regularly, are less likely to get Parkinson's disease compared to those who don't.

Dr. Jurado-Coronel, the lead scientist at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana wrote, wrote, "This (green tea) beverage is prepared from the leaves (steamed and dried) of the Camellia Sinensis plant and contains strong antioxidant and neuroprotective phenolic compounds from which the most important is (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate"

And, " Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second more common neurodegenerative disorders, after Alzheimer's disease and is characterized by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra of the basal ganglia. It has been shown in pre-clinical and clinical studies that green tea may be able to prevent PD".

The results strongly suggested if you drink green tea, your risk of PD is decreased substantially.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of neurological disease, researchers examined the effects of Curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a polyphenol extracted from the plant Curcuma longa on Parkinson's disease (PD) in an animal model.

According to the 13 studies with a total of 298 animals describing the efficacy of curcumin in animal models of PD were selected by searching the online medical literature,* The majority of the experimental studies suggested that curcumin processes significant neuroprotection for the treatment of PD compared to control group.
* 5 selected studies indicated that curcumin had an anti-inflammatory effect in the PD animal models.

* Furthermore, , four studies suggested that curcumin processes antioxidant capacity in the protection of substantia nigra neurons and improvement striatal dopamine levels in PD animal model.

* Additionally, two studies also displayed that curcumin treatment was also effective in reducing neuronal apoptosis and improving functional outcome in animal models of PD.


Based on the findings, researchers said, "Most of the preclinical studies demonstrated the positive findings while one study reported that curcumin had no beneficial effects against Mn-induced disruption (induced neurotoxicity) of hippocampal metal and neurotransmitter homeostasis"

And, "The results demonstrated a marked efficacy of curcumin in an experimental model of PD, suggesting curcumin probably a candidate neuroprotective drug for human PD patients".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
