Manuka Honey (MH) and Tualang Honey (TH), the Potential Natural Antibiotics Alternative with No Side Effects
Scientists may have found natural alternative antibiotics for the treatment of diseases caused by a bacterial infection, some studies found.
Infection is a medical condition caused by bacteria multiplication after entering the body.
Most bacteria were killed off by the white blood cells of the first line of defense of the immune system before they can enter the body.
In this stage, the immune systematic response stimulates the production of proteins associated with the production of coagulation to seal the wound and damage and pro-inflammatory cytokines to destroy the invaded bacteria, leading to symptoms of fever, skin redness in the infected area.
However, if they enter the body successfully, they can initiate infection through the stage of incubation where bacterial multiplying in the specific tissues and organs, leading to colonization and facilitating disease development.
Patients with acute bacterial infection usually recover in a short period of time within 3 weeks.
Some bacterial pathogens can establish life-long chronic infections in the host by the persistent establishment after an acute infection period.
Dr. Young D, the lead scientist, at the Technology and Medicine, said," Bacteria have evolved specific pathogenic mechanisms and harbor sets of genes that contribute to the establishment of a persistent lifestyle that leads to chronic infection"
" Persistent bacterial infection may involve occupation of a particular tissue type or organ or modification of the intracellular environment within eukaryotic cells".
"Bacteria appear to adapt their immediate environment to favor survival and may hijack essential immunoregulatory mechanisms designed to minimize immune pathology or the inappropriate activation of immune effectors".
These results firmly suggested that if you have a weakened immune system you are at a higher risk to the onset of chronic bacterial infection.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
On finding natural sources as a new antibiotic with no side effects, researchers examine the Manuka honey (MH) antibacterial effect in bioactive wound dressings.
Epidemiological studies suggested that MH provides unique antibacterial activity compared to conventional kinds of honey, due to its constituents, methylglyoxal (MGO).
In the evaluation of the antibacterial activity of both MH and MGO (at equivalent MGO concentrations) when applied as a physical coating to a nonwoven fabric wound dressing, researchers found that* Application of concentrations of 0.0054 mg cm-2 of MGO in the form of MH and MGO is sufficient to achieve a 100 colony-forming unit % bacteria reduction against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative Klebsiella pneumonia.
* However, a 3- to 20-fold increase in MGO concentration (0.0170-0.1 mg cm-2) was required to facilitate a good antibacterial effect.
These results suggested that Manuka honey antibacterial activity processed a linearly and MGO concentration-dependent manner.
Dr. Bulman SEL, the lead scientist said, "The results presented in this study, therefore, demonstrate the relevance of an MGO-based coating as an environmentally friendly strategy for the design of functional dressings with antibiotic-free antimicrobial chemistries".
Additionally, in the investigation of the traditional use of Tualang honey (TH) for the treatment of bacterial infection against various microorganisms, including those from burn-related diagnoses, compared the anti antibacterial activity of Aquacel-Tualang honey, Aquacel-Manuka honey, Aquacel-Ag, and Aquacel- plain dressings against bacteria isolated from patients.
Four types of Gram-negative bacteria, namely Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas spp. and Acinetobacter spp., and three Gram-positive bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus aureus (CONS), and Streptococcus spp. were included in the study.
All tested agents showed a significant effect inhibiting the total bacterial count on day 6 and onwards.
Aquacel-Ag and Aquacel-Manuka honey dressings gave a better zone of inhibition for Gram-positive bacteria compared to Aquacel-Tualang honey dressing.
The comparable results were also found in the Aquacel-Manuka honey and Aquacel-Tualang honey dressing against Gram-negative bacteria.
Researchers after taking into account co and confounders suggested that Tualang honey has a bactericidal as well as bacteriostatic effect and is easier to apply and less sticky compared to Manuka honey.
Taken all together, there is no doubt that Manuka honey (MH) and Tualang honey (TH) may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection. However, before they can be used as antibiotics similar to those of conventional medicine, a larger and multicenter human study is necessary to reconfirm the viability.

Vegetables and Fruits in the Prevention and Treatment of Subtypes of Esophageal and Gastric Cancer in Vitro
The esophagus, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads foods from the pharynx to the stomach.
Esophageal cancer is a medical condition that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the esophageal tissue caused by the alternation of cell DNA.
The most common types of esophageal cancer are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Adenocarcinoma arises from the glands in the mucosa, and squamous cell carcinoma begins in flat cells lining the esophagus.
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.
Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.
According to the Cancer Genome Atlas Research Network Group (TCGA), gastric cancer can be classified into four subtypes: EBV-positive tumors, microsatellite unstable tumors (MSI), genomically stable tumors (GS), and tumors with chromosomal instability (CIN).
The stages of both subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer can be classified into
1. Stage 0,
If the cancerous cell has not penetrated in deeper tissue but on the surface of the inside lining of the stomach.
2. Stage I
In stage I, The cancerous cells are no longer on the surface but have invaded into deep the inside stomach lining but still completely inside the stomach
a. Stage IA
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1:
The spreading is not less than 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2:
The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide. b.
Stage IB:
Cancer in this stage has invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5mm (1/5 inch).
b.1. Stage IB1:
Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2:
Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (1/5 inch)
3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the stomach lining.
4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the stomach lining.
5. Stage IVIn this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately outside of the stomach to distant parts of the body.
Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
On findings a natural wholefood for the prevention of subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer, researchers examined the association between vegetables and fruits consumption and risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA), and gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma (GNCA).
According to the results of the Netherlands Cohort Study in 1986, including 120,852 Dutch men and women aged 55-69 filled out a questionnaire on diet and other cancer risk factors, and after 16.3 years of follow-up,
* Total vegetable consumption was nonsignificantly inversely associated with EAC and ESCC risk, but not with GCA and GNCA risk.
More precisely, Significant inverse associations were observed forraw vegetables and EAC risk [RR per 25 g/day: 0.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68-0.98], and Brassica vegetables and GCA risk (RR per 25 g/day: 0.72, 95% CI 0.54-0.95).
* Total fruit consumption was associated with a nonsignificantly decreased EAC risk.
Particularly, citrus fruits were inversely associated with EAC and GCA risk (RRs for highest vs. lowest intake: 0.55, 95% CI 0.31-0.98 and 0.38, 95% CI 0.21-0.69, respectively).
More Profoundly, for current smokers, vegetables and possibly also fruits intake was inversely associated with ESCC and EAC risk.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Consumption of (specific groups of) vegetables and fruits may protect against subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer".
Taken altogether, regular intake of vegetables and fruits may prevent the onset of subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Potential Anti Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) Functional Food, According to Studies
Honey may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of varicella-zoster virus (VZV), some scientists suggested.
Varicella-zoster virus is a member of the herpes viruses that cause chickenpox in children, teens, and young adults, and shingles and recurrent shingles in adults.
The disease has been found worldwide and is highly contagious.
Chickenpox usually caused by exposure either through direct contact with a skin lesion or airborne spread from respiratory droplets from infected patients.
In the initial stage of infection, the symptoms usually resolve within 7 to 10 days.
After initial infection, VZV establishes lifelong latency in cranial nerve and dorsal root ganglia and can reactivate years to decades later.
Reactivation of the dormant virus results in the later years can lead to painful dermatomal rash followed by pain in the distribution of the rash.
In some cases, the diseases can cause infrequently complications of hepatitis, pancreatitis, pneumonitis, and encephalitis and be life-threatening.
However, some adults and children are more likely to develop such complications from primary infection
According to the statistic, in the US, more than 90% of adults acquired the disease in childhood, due to vaccinated with the live virus vaccine.
Dr. Maria A. Nagel and colleagues in the summary of the disease associated with the Varicella zoster virus (VZV), said, "With advancing age or immunosuppression, cell-mediated immunity to VZV declines and virus reactivates to cause zoster (shingles), which can occur anywhere on the body"
" Skin lesions resolve within 1-2 weeks, while complete cessation of pain usually takes 4-6 weeks" and "Zoster can be followed by chronic pain (postherpetic neuralgia), cranial nerve palsies, zoster paresis, meningoencephalitis, cerebellitis, myelopathy, multiple ocular disorders and vasculopathy that can mimic giant cell arteritis. All of the neurological and ocular disorders listed above may also develop without rash".
These results clearly suggested that the elderly due to the increase in age and weaken the immune system, are considered to be the risk group for the development of serious and even life-threatening complications.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient ]or whole food for the prevention and treatment of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection, researchers at the University of Colorado Denver evaluated the anti-viral effect of honey on the varicella-zoster virus in vitro.
The tested VZV was obtained from a zoster vesicle.
Manuka and clover kinds of honey were used at concentrations ranging from 0-6% wt/vol in the study.
During the experiment, various concentrations of manuka and clover honey were added to the tissue culture medium of the VZV-infected human malignant melanoma (MeWo) cell.
According to the assay, both types of honey demonstrate significantly antiviral activity against the varicella-zoster virus with an approximate EC50 = 4.5 % (wt/vol).
In the final report, researchers suggested honey can be considered an anti-varicella-zoster virus agent, because it is an inexpensive product that can be bought at any grocery store and convenient for skin application.
Dr. Shahzad A, said, "honey may be an excellent remedy to treat zoster rash in developing countries where antiviral drugs are expensive or not easily available".
Taken altogether, honey may be used as a topical function food for the prevention of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of chickenpox in children and shingles and recurrent shingles in adults with no side effects.
However, further data collection large example size, and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of honey anti chickenpox and anti shingles possibilities.

Fennel, the Best Functional Food to Normalizes Your Blood Cholesterol Quickly With No Side Effects
Scientists may have found a natural whole food with the potential to treat hyperlipidemia without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.
Cholesterol, the natural ingredient produced in the liver plays an important role in stimulating the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and bile acids and maintaining healthy cell membranes.
Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of cholesterol in the plasma of the blood.
The causes of hyperlipidemia are unknown. However, an unhealthy diet with a lot of unsaturated fat and trans fat is associated with the early onset of the disease. Foods such as cheese egg yolks fried and processed foods and red meat have found to increase blood cholesterol, long-term intake of such foods in great amount have been found to increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, epidemiological studies found.
The Beni-Suef University, in the study to determine the development of obesity in response to a high-fat diet (HFD) an Egyptian Herbal mixture formulation (HMF), including fennel, showed, "feeding HFD diet significantly increased final body weight, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, & LDL concentration compared with controls, while significantly decreasing HD".
Hyperlipidemia is a lifelong condition that is treatable.
Dr. Robert B. Kelly at the Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program in the article "The most beneficial changes result from reducing intake of saturated and trans fats; increasing intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fortifying foods with plant stanols or sterols; isocalorically adding tree nuts to the diet; consuming one or two alcoholic drinks per day; and adopting a Portfolio, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, or low-fat diet. Smaller but still beneficial effects result from reducing intake of dietary cholesterol, increasing intake of soluble fiber and soy protein, and eating fatty marine fish or taking marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid supplements".
Therefore by changing the diet pattern and engaging in regular physical exercise are the fundamental
options that not only can prevent the onset of the condition, particularly in people who are at a higher risk of hyperlipidemia, and also treat high blood cholesterol in patients who already have the condition.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of a genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS.
In the study to examine the effect of the aqueous extract of fennel in the reduced risk of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experiment in Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemia in mice.
Mice treated with the extract at different doses display a significant reduction of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein-B decreased by 40%, 23%, 61%, and 61%, respectively.
Further analysis, the application also increased the levels of HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 by 85% and 58%, respectively
According to the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences which also conducted a study to assess the effects of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) on lipid profiles, in sixty eligible postmenopausal women, randomly assigned into the fennel and placebo groups.
Measurement of total blood cholesterol, cholesterol fractions, and triglycerides was tested at the baseline, and after a three-month follow-up.
At the end of 3 months, blood profiled withdrawn from the women suggested
* There are no significant difference in triglyceride (P = 0.679), total cholesterol (P = 0.103), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C; P = 0.146) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.266) levels between the two groups.
* Fennel treated group demonstrates a significant borderline improvement for HDL-C and triglyceride, compared to the placebo group.
Additional differentiation of the process of the double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled trial, researchers suggested that longer durations, higher doses, and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate the results.
These results indicated that intake of foods for the treatment of conditions or diseases must be on a long-term basis. The times of 3 months may be too short for foods to exert their potential effects.
Taken all together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Intake of fennel should be increased gradually for the food to reach its antihyperlipidemic stage, a longer duration may be needed. In other words, please be patient.

* There are no significant difference in triglyceride (P = 0.679), total cholesterol (P = 0.103), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C; P = 0.146) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.266) levels between the two groups.

Healthy Foods Brassica rapa Suppresses Oxidative Nephrotoxicity in Vitro and Vivo
Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found on the left and right side in the retroperitoneal space in the body.
The function of kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.
Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.
Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.
Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.
Nephrotoxicity or acute kidney failure is a condition of toxicity in the kidneys.
The disease is caused by the poisonous effect of prolonged use of certain medications and the accumulation of harmful chemicals.
According to the American physician association, long-term use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics, furosemide, NSAIDs, and rifampicin are associated to increase damage to the kidney.
And people age over 60 is at increased risk of nephrotoxicity if the above medicines are prescribed for prolonged periods.
Oxidative nephrotoxicity is a condition of kidney damage caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to levels of antioxidants.
Dr. Keiko Hosohata in the examining "Role of Oxidative Stress in Drug-Induced Kidney Injury",
Said, "Because the kidney is exposed to a larger proportion and higher concentration of drugs and toxins than other organs through the secretion of ionic drugs by tubular organic ion transporters across the luminal membranes of renal tubular epithelial cells, and through the reabsorption of filtered toxins into the lumen of the tubule, these cells are at greater risk for injury".
And "In fact, drug-induced kidney injury is a serious problem in clinical practice and accounts for roughly 20% of cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) among hospitalized patients".
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, researchers examined nephroprotective effects of 6-hydroxy-1-methylindole-3-acetonitrile (6-HMA), which was isolated from the roots of B. rapa, on cisplatin-induced toxicity in renal epithelial LLC-PK1 cells and in rats with acute renal injury
The study included 16subjects that were randomized, and fifteen subjects completed all visits.
According to the tested analysis, in vitro and Vivo
* The pretreatment of LLC-PK1 cells with 6-HMA ameliorated cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity caused by oxidative stress.
* The pretreatment also decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and kidney stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased levels of glutathione (GSH).
* Furthermore, 6-HMA inhibited cisplatin-induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression involved in oxidation and inflammation by the binding activity of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), the antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.
* Moreover, 6-HMA administered rats showed lower levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and urinary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) associated with kidney damage than cisplatin alone-treated rats in cisplatin-induced renal injury model.
* Additionally, 6-HMA inhibited the cisplatin-induced formation of MDA and GSH depletion and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR).
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " these findings indicate 6-HMA is a major active constituent from the roots of B. Rapa to have a protective effect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by attenuating oxidative stress.".
Taken altogether, Brassica rapa processed abundantly 6-HMA may be considered supplements for the prevention of oxidative nephrotoxicity, ending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

RAW Fruits and Vegetables Inhibits the Risk of Pancreatic Cancer
The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, the pancreas aids the digestive system to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
Traditional Chinese medicine suggested that the pancreas is a vital organ responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our body.
Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.
At the early stage, patients with pancreatic cancer may be asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, besides the common symptoms shared by all types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue and gastrointestinal discomforts, patients with the condition may also experience localized symptoms such as internal bleeding and severe pain due to the oversize tumor which suppresses the nerve cells and blood vessels.
According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.
The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate at stage IA pancreatic cancer is only14%.
Researchers do not know what causes pancreatic cancer. Scientists do not know the exact causes of pancreatic cancers, but they do know several risk factors that can make a person more likely to get the disease, including the genetic and acquired genetic mutation of p16 and TP53 and KRAS, BRAF, and DPC4 (SMAD4).
Other prevalent risk factors, including long-term use of tobacco, exposure to certain chemicals, overweight, and obesity, and unpreventable risk factors of family history, gender, the increase of age, and ethnicity are associated with the early onset of pancreatic cancer.
Researchers at the John Hoskins medical center suggested an unhealthy diet high in meats, cholesterol, fried foods, and nitrosamines may increase risk, while diets high in fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer.
However, most people with some of the above risk factors do not get the disease.
On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with abnormal cell growth, researchers investigated the consumption of raw fruits and vegetable effects on pancreatic cancer.
According to the dietary habits and medical history variables in a prospective study of fatal pancreas cancer among 34,000 California Seventh-day Adventists between 1976 and 1983. Forty deaths from pancreas cancer occurred during the follow-up period,
* Compared to all US whites, Adventists experienced decreased risk from pancreas cancer death (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 72 for men; 90 for women),
* Furthermore, increasing consumption of vegetarian protein products, beans, lentils, and peas, as well as dried fruit, was associated with highly significant protective relationships to pancreas cancer risk compared to increased risk in increasing meat, egg, and coffee consumption.
In other words, regular consumption of raw fruits and vegetables exerted protective relationships associated with a protease-inhibitor content that decrease the risk of pancreas cancer in high-risk patients.
Taken altogether, fruits and vegetables may be considered a functional food for the prevention of pancreas cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Brassica Genus Inhibits the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-Positive Burkitt's Lymphoma
Herpesvirus is a large family of DNA viruses that cause diseases, depending on the types of viral infection.
According to viral classification, there are 8 types of herpes virus, including human herpesvirus 1 that causes cold sores around the mouth. and 2 that causes genital herpes, herpes zoster that causes chickenpox and shingles, Epstein-Barr virus that causes infectious mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus (CMV) that causes mononucleosis, Human herpesvirus 6 and 7(HHV6 - 7) that causes roseola and Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) that causes cancer, such as Kaposi's Sarcoma.
According to statistics, in the United States, half of teens and adults under age 50 are still infected with the oral herpes virus, and about 1 in 8 have an infection with the genital herpes virus.
All herpes viruses like other viruses are nuclear-replicating, infecting healthy cells nuclei through replication of viral DNA and transcription of viral mRNA.
People infected may experience symptoms of painful sores in the genital area, anus, buttocks, thighs, itching, painful urination, vaginal discharge,..... and tender lumps in the groin.
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive is early in the course of the illness associated with VCA-IgM antibodies caused by EBV infection.
The Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), is also known as human gammaherpesvirus 4, one of the nine known human herpesvirus types in the herpes family.
Unlike other types of the herpes virus, symptoms of EBV may vary, including extreme fatigue, fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.
Conventionally, there is no specific treatment for EBV. The most common treatment is to improve quality of life by targeting symptoms such as reducing swelling of tissues with corticosteroids
On finding a potential plant with infectious diseases, researchers compared the effects of indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) is a natural product found in broadly consumed plants of the Brassica genus, such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, effects on the various vegetablesEpstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive
Based on the tested results, I3C efficiently induced apoptosis in cell lines derived from EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphomas (virus latency I/II).
However, I3C did not have any cytotoxic activity against EBV-negative Burkitt's lymphomas and immortalized EBV-infected lymphoblastoid cell lines (virus latency III).
Furthermore, The effect of I3C on cell viability. in EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma was attributed to C6-methylated derivative, but not other 3-substituted indoles.
Moreover, 3C treatment caused apoptosis characterized by loss of cancer cell mitochondria membrane potential and caspase activation by alternating the expression of proteins involved in the control of apoptosis and transcription regulation in EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines.
Particularly, I3C derivative 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) prolonged survival and reduced tumor burden of mice xenotransplanted with EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma Daudi cells.
Based on the results, researchers said, "these results, together with previous reports from clinical trials indicating the lack of toxicity in humans of I3C and derivatives, support the use of these compounds as a new therapeutic approach for treating patients with endemic (EBV-positive) Burkitt's lymphoma".
Taken altogether, Brassica Genus may be considered anti the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive induced cancer remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Cynometra Cauliflora, the Anti-Obesity Functional Foods
Obesity is a chronic and medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.
According to the statistics provided by the National Center for Health Statistics (2015-2016), in the US, approximately 39.8% of adults aged 20 and over were obese accompanied by another 31.8% overweight.
Visceral fat is a layer of fat that surrounds the organs. Overexpression of visceral fat has been found to promote insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation.
In obese, accumulation of visceral fat is predominant in the intra-abdominal cavity.
According to the BMI index, a person is considered overweight, if he/she has a BMI between 25 to 29.9 kg/m2. A BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more is an indication of obesity.
In other words, obesity is a progressive chronic disease characterized by abnormal fat accumulation in the body tissues that may impair health.
Similar to other chronic medical conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure, obesity has recently become a serious health problem in the US as nearly 35% of Americans are obese accompanied by a similar percentage of overweight adults.
Obesity and overweight in the U.S. economy have eclipsed $1.7 trillion, equivalent to 9.3 percent of the nation's gross domestic product, according to a new overweight report on chronic diseases.
Dr. Maximilian Tremmel, the lead scientist in a systematic literature review of the economic burden of obesity, wrote, " almost half of the world’s adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030 if the prevalence continues on the current trend [6] and consequently also the costs attributable to obesity will increase".
And, "A useful example for rapidly rising costs attributable to obesity from these selected studies are the two mentioned studies from Germany [44,46]. The results of the two papers together show that total societal costs in Germany due to obesity have increased from €9.8 million to €12.2 million between 2002 and 2008. Therefore, public health interventions should focus on the prevention of obesity as soon as possible, ideally at a young age".
Description
Cynometra cauliflora is a species of the genus Cynometra, native to Malaysia, and found mainly in northern Peninsular Malaysia.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the anti-obesity and lipid-lowering effects of ethanolic extract of C. cauliflora leaves and its major compound (vitexin) in C57BL/6 obese mice induced by a high-fat diet (HFD).
The study included male C57BL/6 mice induced obesity by feeding with HFD (60% fat) for 16 weeks followed by the treatment that starts during the last 8 weeks of HFD feeding with C. cauliflora leaf extract at 200 and 400 mg/kg/day, orlistat (10 mg/kg) and vitexin (10 mg/kg).
According to the chemical analysis,
* The oral administration of C. cauliflora (400 and 200 mg/kg) and vitexin significantly reduced body weight, adipose tissue and liver weight, and lipid accumulation in the liver compared to the control HFD group.
* Both doses of C. cauliflora also significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased serum triglyceride, LDL, lipase, IL-6, peptide YY, resistin levels, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperleptinemia compared to the control HFD group.
* C. cauliflora significantly up-regulated the expression of adiponectin, Glut4, Mtor, IRS-1 and InsR genes associated with the sustaining weight loss and significantly decreased the expression of Lepr in white adipose tissue involved in stimulating weight gain.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study shows interesting outcomes of C. cauliflora against HFD-induced obesity and associated metabolic abnormalities".
Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infectious diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Brassica Vegetables Reduce the Risk of Prostate Cancer
The prostate warped around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.
The prostate gland is considered a reproductive organ in men.
Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous due to the alternation of the cell's DNA.
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.
Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.
At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination, and urinary difficulty.
The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis tumors.
According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages of prostate cancer is nearly 100%.
Believe it or not, more than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.
Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age, and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.
On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers examined the effects of Brassica vegetables, including mustard greens on prostate cancer risk.
According to the tested results
* Brassica vegetables exerted a strong effect on the metabolic breakdown products associated with the modulation of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes that protect DNA from damage.
According to the 12 published studies that analyze the relationship of Brassica vegetable intake and prostate cancer risk* Three reported statistically significant reduced risks (P < 0.05) and one reported a borderline significantly reduced risk (P = 0.06) with high Brassica vegetable consumption.
* 6 showed a clear explanation of the prostate cancer risk involved in the consumption of Brassica vegetables.
Collectively, researchers said, " The epidemiological literature provides modest support for the hypothesis that high intakes of Brassica vegetables reduce prostate cancer risk".
Taken altogether, mustard greens may be considered a functional food for reducing the risk of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tomato Suppresses the Onset of Pulmonary Diseases
Pulmonary diseases are a class of diseases associated with the lungs, including asthma, COPD, influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis, and lung cancer.
In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lung are pulmonary diseases.
The most common pulmonary diseases are
* Asthma
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.
* Pneumothorax
Pneumothorax is a condition of collection of air within the pleural cavity, from either the outside or from the lung.
* Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a condition of an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi, the larger and medium-sized airways that carry airflow from the trachea into the lung parenchyma.
* COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)** Emphysema is a type of COPD with a long-term and progressive condition that causes shortness of breath, depending on the stage of lung function associated with the damage of tissues of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs.
** Chronic bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammation of the lung’s bronchi that cause the increased production of mucus in the lung associated with the difficulty of breathing.
*Lung cancer a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancers are derived from epithelial cells
* PneumoniaPneumonia is a condition of the inflammation of the lung caused by bacteria, such as bacterial infection, Streptococcus pneumonia, or influenza viruses in most cases.
* Pulmonary edema
Pulmonary edema is a condition of fluid accumulation in the air spaces and parenchyma of the lungs that lead to difficulty of breathing and respiratory failure.
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of pulmonary disease, researchers examined the dietary supplementation of tomato juice, TJ protection against the developing lung injury caused by breathing hyperoxic gas.
Neonatal mice (C57BL6/J) breathed either 65% O2 (hyperoxia) or room air from birth until postnatal day 7 (P7d)selected to the study underwent necropsy at P7d or raised in room air until adulthood (P56d). A subset of both groups, drinking water was replaced with TJ (diluted 50:50 in water) from late gestation to necropsy.
In P7d, TJ injection increased pulmonary total antioxidants (TAC) and COL1α1 expression associated with pulmonary fibrosis and attenuated the hyperoxia-induced increase in production ROS without affecting the changes in lung structure.
Furthermore, in P56d, TJ increased TAC, decreased oxidative stress, and reversed the hyperoxia-induced increase in bronchiolar smooth muscle by ameliorating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "TJ supplementation during and after neonatal exposure to hyperoxia protects the lung from some but not all aspects of hyperoxia-induced injury".
In other words, TJ protects the lung against injury by stimulating the expression of circulation of antioxidant concentration.
Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Hibiscus, the Natural Anti Bacterial Infection Functional Remedy
Infectious diseases are medical conditions caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi.
Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.
In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.
According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.
A bacterial infection is an infected caused bacteria.
Infection can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the messages from the central nervous system related to the danger of microbial infection, the immune macrophages in the first line of defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of the infection to kill off pathogens which try to enter the body.
However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection has also killed off or damage the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.
In most cases in a healthy individual, depending on the size of the wound, the immune system can easily eradicate all foreign invaders and the wound is recovered within days and weeks.
Symptoms of the acute infection include gastrointestinal discomforts, such as congestion vomiting or nausea, and diarrhea, short term joint or muscle pain, fever, headache, skin rash, and cough, Some patients with acute infection also experience symptoms of swollen lymph nodes, an indication of the body is fighting infection.
The most common types of bacterial infections are bacterial meningitis, otitis media, pneumonia, and tuberculosis.
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a species of Hibiscus probably native to West Africa used in traditional Chinese medicine to resolve phlegm and food stagnation and regulate the Liver to aid digestion, promote weight loss, reduce cholesterol, improve circulation, lower blood pressure.
With an aim to find natural food for the treatment of infectious diseases,, researchers compared the effects of rude, phenolic-rich extracts (CPREs) isolated from different sources, such as Hibiscus sabdariffa (H. sabdariffa, Roselle), Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. Rubra (B. oleracea, red cabbage) and Beta vulgaris (B. Vulgaris).
According to the tested differentiation, the administration of CPREs showed potential antibacterial and antifungal activities.
According to chemical analysis, total anthocyanins content (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC), and other compounds found in all three CPREs demonstrated strong antimicrobial effects against pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
Hibiscus sabdariffa CPRE (HCPRE) at a dose of 50 μg/mL exhibited signs of asymmetric, wrinkled exterior surfaces, cell deformations, and loss of cell shapes against Staphylococcus aureus DSM 1104 and Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 43816.
The injection of CPRE also led to cell clumping, malformations, blisters, cell depressions, and diminished cell numbers.
In other words, CPRE induced the death of bacterial cells and loss of cell contents.
Taken altogether, Hibiscus sabdariffa may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
