Phytochemical Carotenoids Blocks the Liver cancer Onset and Progression

Liver cancer is a medical condition casued by irregular cell growth in the liver tissue due to the alternation of the cells DNA.

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

Since the organ is a soft tissue with less nerve, most liver cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer.

liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

According to the statistic, approximately 42,030 adults (29,480 men and 12,550 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer in 2019 in the US.

Believe it or not, since 1980, the incidence of liver cancer has tripled. Between 2006 and 2015, the number of people diagnosed with the disease increased by approximately 3% annually.

The exact causes of liver cancer are not identified. However, epidemiologically, age, gender, geography, cirrhosis (severe scarring in the liver) and medical conditions such as diabetes and obesity are some of the most common prevalent factor associated with liver cancer developing.

Some researchers suggested the increased liver cancer incidence may be associated with the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. VanSaun MN, the lead scientist wrote, "Chronic changes induced by the prolonged consumption of a high-fat diet alone culminate in the development of primary liver dysplasias".

And, "High fat diet-induced steatosis, coupled with a splenic injection model of experimental liver metastasis using syngeneic MC38 colon cancer cells, resulted in an increased number of secondary tumor nodules and metastatic burden in steatotic livers. Metastatic nodules were associated with focal peritumoral areas of infiltrating inflammatory cells and associated apoptotic cell populations".

Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of liver cancer researchers examined the carotenoids effects on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression.

According to the tested results of the delivery of siFOXC1 using novel carotenoid functionalized dendritic nanoparticles (CDN), the CDN not only displayed a markedly reduced toxicity profile but also achieved ∼90% FOXC1 knockdown.

In other words, the established delivery CDN inhibited the expression of transcription factor FOXC1 which has been found to induce hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression.

Including carotenoids, the CDN achieve the ∼18% greater delivery efficiency compared to treatments of particles with no carotenoid tagging.

Researchers after taking other factors into account said, "thereby emphasizing the role of carotenoid mediated cell internalization in the efficient delivery of CDN-siFOXC1 complex in liver cancer cells".

More precisely, using the aforementioned delivery system, carotenoids are more effective in the inhibition of liver cancer compared to oral injection.

Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Yoga, The Best in Reduced Symptoms and Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a condition of digestive disorder affecting the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach with symptoms of heartburn or acid indigestion.

Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the study to compared the efficacy of yoga intervention and frequent consumption of over-the-counter or prescribed proton pump inhibitors (PPI), researchers filed the following results
1. PPIs and other over counter medicine are insufficient to relieve the symptoms of gastric reflux.
The combination of yoga intervention and medicine expressed a significant reduction of the severe symptoms of GERD, including bloody stools or bloody vomiting, dysphagia in the ameliorated sensation of food being stuck in your throat. and prevented nausea.

2. The combined treatment also showed a strong effect in avoid or delay the necessity of invasive procedures

Proton pump inhibitors are a class of drugs used in conventional medicine in reduced gastric acid production with pronounced and long-lasting effects

Based on the finding information, Dr.Kaswala D, the led author said, " regular practice of Kapalbhati and Agnisar kriya along with PPI, patients with hiatal hernia had an improvement in severe symptoms of GERD, which were initially refractory to PPI alone".

Kapalbhati and Agnisar kriya, are exercises in yoga lessons with an aim to in increased digestive system and metabolism.
Hiatal hernia is an abnormality of the stomach in induced acid backs up into the esophagus, causing acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). In most cases, surgery is necessary, if patients do not a response to heartburn and acid reflux.medication.

Additionally, in a case study of a 14-y-old girl who had two surgeries for gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and continued with chest and abdominal pain, as well as vomiting, difficulty eating, weight loss, and anxiety assigned to 4 months of Iyengar yoga, researchers at the University of California after taking into account of her symptoms which had not been improved with treatments by specialists over an extended period of time, found that

1. Yoga intervention expressed a significant improvement of the chest and abdominal pain, and vomiting, difficulty eating, weight loss, and anxiety.
2. Yoga participated in improved school attendance, sleep, socialize, or eat, and physical functioning
3. After 4-mo treatment of Iyengar yoga, patient have resumed activities and re-engage with her environment

Iyengar, a form of Hatha Yoga emphasized on detail, precision, and alignment in the performance of posture (asana) and breath control (pranayama), according to some yoga instructors, the practice has a pronounced effect in the reduced system of digestive disorder and promoted energy restoring.
Dr. Evans S., the led author said, "(The purpose of this report is) to stimulate the scientific study of this form of treatment for children and adolescents with chronic pain".

There was a report that Iyengar yoga restorative poses with gentle strength-building poses have slowly increased symptoms of GERD of an adolescent girl.

Mrs. Beth Sternlieb, a yoga instructor at the UCLA Pediatric Pain Clinics suggested that Iyengar yoga lessons implication not only reduced intake of medication but also improved her medical complications after medication withdrawal.

Taking all together, there is no doubt that yoga may be used as an integrated form of physical exercise in reduced symptoms and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Tomato Inhibits the Onset of Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is a type of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by a buildup of fat in the liver.

Most cases of NASH if untreated can lead to liver scars or building up of scar over time, a condition of liver cirrhosis and one of the most common causes of liver cancer.

Most people with non-inflammatory-alcoholic fatty liver disease are asymptomatic, however, the inflammation caused by non-alcoholic steatohepatitis may induce liver damage, leading to a reduced function of the liver that orchestrates the onset of liver symptoms.

Most common symptoms are abdominal swelling, enlarged blood vessels just beneath the skin's surface, enlarged spleen, red palms, and jaundice.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms that do not recede in a short period of time, you may have some forms of liver disease. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Out of many prevalent factors associated with increased risk of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, some researchers suggested the rise of the condition in the US population may be correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. H. Cortez-Pinto, the lead scientist said, " Comparison of their diet history with control data (C) revealed that carbohydrate consumption was lower in patients (P): P—243.6±5.7g vs. C—261.5±1.6g, P<0.05, and most patients had very low fiber intake. Conversely, total fat consumption was higher in patients: P—79.7±1.7g vs. 73.0±0.4, P<0.01. A significantly higher intake of n-6 fatty acids (P=0.003) and the then-6/n-3 ratio was found in patients, P<0.001".

And, "Our results suggest that the quality and combination of carbohydrates and fat intake may be more relevant than their isolated amount; an increased fat intake with an excessive amount of n-6 fatty acids can be implicated in promoting necro-inflammation, and provides further grounds for individualized dietary therapy".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to discover healthy foods for the treatment of liver disease, researchers examined the effect of lycopene, a non-provitamin A carotenoid and the pigment principally responsible for the characteristic deep-red color of ripe tomato and tomato products on subjects with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

According to the review of the epidemiological study, tomato extract supplementation showed a significant protective effect against HFD-induced hepatic inflammation compared supplementation of lycopene.

In patients with NASH, increased levels of plasma lycopene may have a strong impact on the progression of NASH as patients have been shown to have significantly reduced plasma lycopene.

In vivo, dietary lycopene inhibits liver carcinogen-induced preneoplastic lesions in the rat liver that was effective in reducing NASH-promotion in rats.

The efficacy of lycopene in the inhibition of NASH and another chronic disease may be associated with the body in lycopene metabolism involved in both the chemical and enzymatic modifications.

Futhermore, in vivo synthesis of ACR from lycopene showed toattenuate hepatic steatosis, by decreasing the macrophage conditioned medium induced and TNFα-mediated induction of pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokines.

Taken altogether, tomato processed a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplements for the prevention and treatment of NASH, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Yoga, the Best in Reduced Risk and Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a condition of abnormal blood pressure, blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist,... which can lead to early onset of diabetes, cardiovascular disease,.
..
People who participated in yoga class regularly are likely to have a lower risk of metabolic syndrome development, a renowned study suggested.

Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

According to the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, yoga, a form of physical activity that incorporates psychological components (e.g., maintaining attention, relaxation) may process health benefits in the alleviated risk of metabolic syndrome and improved mental stress and quality of life.

In a sixty-seven adults at risk for MetS enrolled (mean age [SD]: 58 [10] years; 50% male; 79% non-Hispanic White) in 12-week yoga program coupled with an evidence-based health education program (HED), in compared to HED alone, researchers found that participants in the yoga program coupled with an evidence-based health education program (HED) showed a significant improvement of twice quality of life domains in compared health education group.

Dr. Sohl SJ, the lead author said, " implemented lifestyle education along with yoga to evaluate the potential unique effects of yoga on participants at risk for MetS".

Furthermore, in another 12 weeks yoga lessons of 173 Chinese men and women aged 18 or above either assigned to either the yoga intervention group (n = 87) or the control group (n = 86), after taking into account of other confounders, researchers indicated that yoga group showed a greater decline in waist circumference (p<0.001), fasting glucose (p<0.01), triglycerides (p<0.05), and MetS z score, in comparison to control.

Also, the yoga group expressed a significant improved general health perception (p<0.01), physical component score (p<0.01), and social functioning (p<0.01) domains score of HRQo with no difference in the enhanced systolic/diastolic blood pressures or high-density lipid protein cholesterol in both groups.

Promisingly, the 2009-2012, 48-week randomized trial comparing restorative yoga vs. stretching among underactive adults with the metabolic syndrome at the Universities of California, San Francisco and San Diego of 180 participants randomized and 135 (75%) completed the trial, at 12 months, suggested that yoga participants displayed a magnificent decrease of fasting glucose, insulin, and HbA1c and an increase in HDL-cholesterol in compared to stretch group.

Taking all together, yoga may be used as physical therapy in reduced risk and treatment of metabolic syndrome with greater effect in comparison to other forms of treatment in the article, but participants should always engage only to class tailored to their needs.

Phytochemical Lycopene Protects the Kidneys Against Renal/Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer or renal cancer is primary cancer caused by irregular cell growth in the kidney tissue.

Kidneys are to bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood and remove waste through urinary secretion.

The kidney also plays a critical in maintaining the levels of fluids in the body, by removing extra fluids to make urine.

Furthermore, the kidney also regulates electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin.

There are 2 most common types of kidney cancer including
* Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of adult kidney cancer, originated in the lining of the proximal convoluted tubule that transport primary urine, accounting for over 85% of all kidney cancer diagnosed.

* Urothelial carcinoma is also called transitional cell carcinoma accounting for 10% to 15% of the kidney cancers diagnosed in adults.

The stages of renal cell carcinoma are
1. Stage 0
Kidney (renal cells) cancer is classified as Stage 0 if the cancerous cell has not penetrated in deeper tissue but in the surface of the kidney lining.
2. Stage I
In stage I, The cancerous cells are no longer in the surface but have invaded into deep kidney lining, but still completely inside the kidney.
a. Stage IA1
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1: The spreading is < 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2: The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide.
b. Stage IB: cancer in this stage have invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5mm (1/5 inch).
b.1. Stage IB1: Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2: Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (1/5 inch)
3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the kidney.
4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the kidney.
5. Stage IV
In the stage, IV is the most advanced stage of renal cell carcinoma as cancerous cells have spread to the distant parts of the body

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of kidney cancer, researchers examined the role of a lycopene-rich diet in the development of RCC in the TSC2 mutant Eker rat model.

Selected 10-week old female Eker rats (n=90) in the study were assigned in equal numbers to receive 0, 100 or 200mg/kg of lycopene as part of their daily diet sacrificed at the 18 months.

According to the tested assays, tumor size was decreased from 94% in control animals to 65% in the lycopene group.

Furthermore, the mean numbers of renal carcinomas and tumor length were statistically significantly decreased in the lycopene group compared to untreated controls. More precisely, tumor numbers decreased (P<0.002) in the lycopene group were linearly (P<0.003) to the increased lycopene injection from 0 to 200.

Compared to lycopene treated group, the control rats fed only the basal diet had a greater length of tumors.

Additional differentiation of lycopene efficacy, researchers found that lycopene inhibited the kidney cancer cell by blocking the protein in signaling cell proliferation, and in promoting the cancer cell invasive response.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "dietary supplementation with lycopene attenuates the development of renal cell cancers in the predisposed TSC2 mutant Eker rat model".

Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of kidney cancer, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Yoga Intervention in Enhanced Smoking Cessation

Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

According to the joint study led by the Alpert Medical School of Brown University in examine the smoking-relevant characteristics of individuals enrolling in an 8-week randomized controlled trial, for testing yoga as a complementary treatment to standard smoking cessation, on the sample of 55% female, 86% non-Hispanic white, with a mean age of 46 years,
1. Males smoked more cigarettes/ day than females and had the lower motivation to quit smoking
2. Females were more likely to smoke for weight control, social and mood-related reasons, and had higher expectations for the efficacy of yoga
3. Age was negatively associated with the presence of other smokers in the household, and smoking in response to negative moods
4. And Age was associated with more willing in quitting

After taking into account for other co-founders, researchers said, "both males and females were interested in a program offering yoga as a complementary therapy for smoking cessation".

The results indicated that yoga may be considered as an integrated form of exercise to assist smoking.cessation.

Further discussion of smoking cessation, in a study to examine the rates of cessation among women randomized to either a novel, 8-week Yoga plus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) smoking cessation intervention versus a Wellness program plus the same CBT smoking cessation intervention, scientists showed that after 8 weeks period
1. Innovative treatments are needed to address barriers as mentioned in the above study for successful smoking cessation among men and women.
2. Yoga may be an effective complementary treatment for smoking cessation
3. Yoga can offer an alternative to traditional exercise for reducing negative symptoms that often accompany to smoking cessation and predict relapse to smoking among recent quitters.

The results of finding suggested that Yoga plus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are the better choices to improve smoking cessation outcome, compared to yoga alone or standard treatments.

Additional analysis of the effect of yoga intervention in smoking cessation, researchers at the University of Cincinnati, conducted a review of literature published of database from MEDLINE (PubMed), EBSCOHOST, PROQUEST, MEDINDIA, CINAHL, Alt HealthWatch, and AMED between 2004 and 2013, suggested that 10 studies satisfied the criteria and guidelines selected have produced the following results
1. Yoga participation expressed a significant effect in improved quitting smoking rates in the majority of studies
2. Yoga-based interventions hold a promise for smoking cessation

Unfortunately, all these studies also expressed some of the limitations including short follow-up measurements and short duration of intervention, Dr. Dai CL, the led author concerned

The finding evidence suggested that yoga adapted to smoker age, gender,...... and used in conjunction with standard treatment may have a profound effect in enhanced smoking cessation in short-term.

Herbal Bilberry Normalizes the Angiogenesis In the Body

Angiogenesis refers to the formation of new blood vessels from the existing vasculature.

Angiogenesis, on one hand, plays a critical role in repairing the tissue damages including arteriosclerosis, myocardial infarction. On another hand, the expression of angiogenesis has been found to cause diseases and induce progression of retinopathies, benign tumor, and cancer.

In other words, abnormal blood vessel growth that cause either excessive or insufficient has been linked to underlying many deadly and debilitating conditions.

Under normal condition, the development of angiogenesis totally depends on the functional demands of the body. For example, exercise stimulates angiogenesis in skeletal muscle and heart and a lack of exercise can lead to capillary regression.

Clearly, these results demonstrated the needs of angiogenesis for the body to function better and the formation of new blood vessels occurs throughout human life.

However, in the cancer perspective, new blood vessel growth is important for cancer proliferation and metastatic spread. The survival of tumor cells totally depends on an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients.

Dr. the lead scientist said, "Levels of expression of angiogenic factors reflect the aggressiveness of tumor cells. The discovery of angiogenic inhibitors should help to reduce both morbidity and mortality from carcinomas".

In other words, if we can stop the tumor in stimulating the production of new blood vessels to supply energy for them to grow, we may cure cancer.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find potential treatment for diseases associated with angiogenesis, with no side effects, researchers examined the antiangiogenic properties and antioxidant activities (a) of the main anthocyanidins (delphinidin, cyanidin, and malvidin) found as constituents in Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) anthocyanosides (VMA) and (b) of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC).

Anthocyanidins exerted a significant inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) associated with the grow od new blood vessel in a concentration-dependent manner.

Anthocyanidin at 3 and/or 10 microM are the most effective compared to those of NAC at 1 microM (the only concentration tested).
Moreover, both anthocyanidin (0.3-10 microM) and NAC (1-1000 microM) concentration-dependently also exerted a significantly scavenged the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical.

The findings suggested that VMA processes an anti-angiogenic activity depending on the main constituent anthocyanidins (delphinidin, cyanidin, and malvidin), presumably via antioxidant effects.

Additionally, in vitro and in vivo, Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry) extracts (VME) showed an anti-angiogenic effect on 0.3-30 µg ml(-1)) compared to those of GM6001 (0.1-100 µM; a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor).

In human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), VME inhibited VEGF-A-induced proliferation of HUVECs.

According to the vivo assay, intravitreal administration of VME inhibited the formation of neovascular tufts during oxygen-induced retinopathy in mice.

The results suggested that VME may be effective against retinal diseases involving angiogenesis.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases involved angiogenesis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
