Honey Promotes Drainage of Bile and Pancreatic Duct Against Obstructive Jaundice

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, according to studies.

Obstructive jaundice is a condition caused by the obstruction of bile or pancreatic duct, that interferes with the drainage of bile from the bloodstream into the intestines.

On the other hand, jaundice is a result of overexpression of bilirubin, a yellowish pigment found in hemoglobin in the blood.

Increased expression of bilirubin in the blood in some cases is caused by liver injury.

Some researchers suggested that gallstones, pancreatic disease, including cancer and cysts, developed on or nearby the tube connecting the pancreas to the intestines.


In other words, any diseases associated with the narrowing and blocking of the normal function of the drainage of bile from the blood may be considered the causes of obstruction jaundice.


According to the statistics, obstructive jaundice is a very common symptom found in approximately 10-15% of patients with Gallstones. Sadly, most cases of obstructive jaundice were a result of cancers with a 2-year mortality rate of 95%.


Dr. D. PHILIP MACGUIRE, M.D. in the article of obstructive jaundice suggested that in the differentiation of obstructive jaundice, physicians should also take into consideration the biochemical analyses of icterus index, bile acids, blood sedimentation test, cholesterol, nonprotein nitrogen, urea and amino nitrogen, uric acid of the blood, and urobilin excretion in the urine.


The doctor continued, " there is also a distinctive change in the chemical composition of the blood in obstructive jaundice as shown by an increase of cholesterol which is present in two forms: (a) free alcohol and (b) combined with acid as esters".


The statement is clearly suggested that a surgeon should also know the extent of liver impairment in patients with obstructive jaundice before the surgery.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural and therapeutic compound for the treatment of obstructive jaundice (OJ), a serious, life-threatening condition that can lead to death, researchers examined the anti-obstruction jaundice of honey and immunonutrients.

The study included forty 24-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats, randomly placed into five groups, each group consisted of eight rats. The sham group underwent only common bile duct (CBD) dissection and no ligation was performed. CBD ligation was applied to the other groups and after the operation, one CBD group was fed with rat chow only, the others were fed with rat chow supplemented with honey, or immunonutrients, or honey plus immunonutrients.


On the final day of the experiment, researchers found that honey and immunonutrient reduced the markers of oxidative stress observed by the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) compared to the other groups.


Bacterial translocation (BT) rates also significantly reduced in the honey and immunonutrient treatment group according to the liver and spleen samples.

Futhermore, the mean mucosal thickness of ileum samples also improved notably in the BDL+HI group compared to the other groups.

Dr. Oguz S after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "Immunonutrition applied with honey had immunostimulant effects, decreased BT due to an additive effect, and had positive effects on intestinal mucosa".

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about honey anti-OJ property, researchers once again investigated the possible effects of honey supplementation on anastomotic wound healing in obstructive jaundice (OJ) model.

The study included 80 Wistar-albino rats divided into four groups as control, OJ, O plus artificial honey and OJ plus honey.

Selected rats were fed with standard rat chow (SRC) in group-I&II, SRC plus 10 mg/kg/day honey in group-4 and SRC plus artificial honey including the same caloric amount with honey in group-3. Colon anastomoses were performed in all groups.

Also, common bile duct ligation was performed in group-1, group-2, and group-3.

Honey treatment significantly lowers the levels of jaundice in the animal by inhibiting the levels of hydroxyproline compared with the controls and those given honey or artificial honey.

According to the anastomotic bursting pressure assay, the use of honey significantly increased the bursting pressure compared with that of the bile duct ligated group.

Dr. Ergul E, the lead scientist said, based on these results, "The oral administration of honey can be considered when attempts at conventional internal drainage fail in obstructive jaundice".

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of obstructive jaundice (OJ), pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
