Alterations in thyroid function among the different polycystic ovary syndrome phenotypes

Posted by Chantel Martiromo, research contributed by PubMed

In the study of population consisted of all PCOS patients, attending the infertility and IVF unit of Department of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine of University of Siena, Italy, and compared them to regularly cycling, healthy, infertile controls. Upon admission, blood was drawn from all patients during the early follicular phase, for complete hormonal and metabolic profiles, posted in PubMed, showed that in IR-PCOS patients treated with insulin sensitizers, blood was drawn again after 6 months. PCOS patients had a significantly higher prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction compared to infertile controls. While no significant association was detected between TSH value and the presence of hyperandrogenism, overweight and obese PCOS patients, as well as IR PCOS patients showed significantly higher prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction. Moreover, among IR PCOS patients, 6 months treatment with insulin sensitizers significantly reduces TSH levels. Infertile PCOS patients have a high prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction, which may be successfully treated in IR PCOS patients by insulin sensitizers.

With the real calorie and carbohydrate contents of these meals often being double that of published amount. With little or no fibre. And we then wonder why the sudden spike in obesity rates.
Shiratake noodles. Remember that name it is important. Is considered by many to be a miracle food. Currently gaining popularity in western diets, this eastern food staple is the secret behind all those Chinese woman (and men) who remain so slim.
What's the secret?
Tofu Shiritaki Noodles are completely organic. They have no additives, preservatives; they don't even contain any wheat, gluten or egg. So not only are they 100% organic, they are hypoallergenic. A real miracle food indeed.
Shiritaki noodles are made from flour derived from the Konjac plants' roots. This flour is mixed with water and in some instances mixed with Tofu (bean curd) before passing through a press to shape the paste. Landing in boiling water to be cooked. They may also be known as yam noodles, however contain no yam.
The addition of Tofu or bean curd is done to improve the texture of the noodles whilst boosting the protein and calcium contents.
Tofu is the is the end result of the of curdled soya milk. High in protein as all soya products are. Tofu is also high in natural calcium that is easily absorbed by the human body.
Even with the combination of these two, shiratake noodles are still 100% organic. The curdling process of the soymilk is done using either seawater, calcium sulphide or magnesium chloride.
The combination of these two raw materials results in one of the best dietary foods available on the market today. A bold statement to make: but when considering that not only are they high in natural fibre, calcium and protein, whilst being low in calories. They provide the bulk your digestive system requires to function properly.
So your familiar with the nutritional benefits, how will they improve your lifestyle
Well for one they are precooked only needing to be rinsed and heated (wet type) or cooked for a few minutes (dry). They may not have a great taste on their own but the addition of some spices makes for a quick nutritious meal on those nights you really just don't feel like cooking.
Should you be a more adventurous cook there are numerous recipes available on the Internet incorporating these noodles. They are not only healthy and nutritious, but will also help rid you of those few extra pounds.
Tofu Shirataki Noodles cannot only be used as a quick and nutritious meal, they are also inexpensive and can go a long way to helping you shed those unwanted pounds. So what are you waiting for, go get yours.

N-acetyl cysteine in clomiphene citrate resistant polycystic ovary syndrome

Posted by Chantel Martiromo, research contributed by PubMed
Clomiphene citrate (CC) has been the gold-standard drug for ovulation induction in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but still CC resistance is seen in approximately 15-40% in women with PCOS. According to the study by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,, potsed in PubMed,  N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a safe and cheap drug available in the market many years ago as mucolytic agent, was found to have a role in infertility management. Recently, some reports discussed the possible beneficial effects of NAC on ovulation. The biological properties of the NAC make this drug a potential candidate for its use in the infertility treatment, especially in the PCOS in inducing or augmenting ovulation. An updated electronic search was performed through PUBMED, MEDLINE, and COCHRANE and focused on peer-reviewed, full text, randomized controlled trials, and observational cohort or case-control studies for role of NAC in CC-resistant PCOS. Thorough search through all the clinical studies showed mixed results. Studies with positive results showed improvement in induction of ovulation as compared to negative studies showing contrary results. More randomized clinical trials are still needed to establish its definitive role in CC-resistant PCOS.

The treatment of infertility in polycystic ovary syndrome

Posted by Chantel Martiromo, research contributed by PubMed
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of anovulatory infertility. Lifestyle change alone is considered the first-line treatment for the management of infertile anovulatory PCOS women who are overweight or obese. According to the University of New South Wales, posted in PubMed, first-line medical ovulation induction therapy to improve fertility outcomes is clomiphene citrate, whilst gonadotrophins, laparoscopic ovarian surgery or possibly metformin are second line in clomiphene citrate-resistant PCOS women. There is currently insufficient evidence to recommend aromatase inhibitors over that of clomiphene citrate in infertile anovulatory PCOS women in general or specifically in therapy naive or clomiphene citrate-resistant PCOS women. IVF/ICSI treatment is recommended either as a third-line treatment or in the presence of other infertility factors.

Spicy Boiled Noodles With Fried Beancurd, Eggs And Fresh Prawns (Mee Rebus)

Posted by Chantel Martiromo., Recipe By

This is a spicy balanced meal. It is a local recipe for Singaporeans and Malaysians. This dish is a traditional hawker food and commonly known as Mee Rebus in Asean Countries. Translated into English the dish means simply "boiled noodles".This name is however misleading as the dish is more than boiled noodles. It has a rich spicy sauce and is served with an elaborate garnish.
A decade ago Mee Rebus was sold by hawkers who used to carry two baskets over a pole. At one of the pole in one basket will contain his traditional stove and a pot of boiling water. At the other end of the pole contained a basket with his ingredients for the Mee Rebus. After that they used pushed cart with a bicycle fixed to it when they have made enough money.
Lately, Mee Rebus is sold in local hawker centres.
Ingredients:
1/2 kg noodles
1/2 kg bean sprouts
3 tbsp dried anchovy (for stock)
3 tbsp dried shrimp
10 shallots
4 tbsp curry powder
1 sweet potato (boiled and mashed to thicken gravy)
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tbsp salt
3 lemon grass (serai)
Garnishing:
2 stalks Chinese celery (chopped coarsely)
4 pieces fried bean curd cake
6 shallots (sliced thinly and deep-fried till crispy)
6 fresh prawns (boil for a few minute)
2 green chillies (sliced thinly)
2 hard boiled eggs (sliced)
Method:
Preparing the gravy:
1. Grind and boil dried anchovy in a pot with 6 cups of water for the stock.
2. Grind dried shrimps with shallots and add this paste to the stock. Bring to a slow boil.
3. Add the crushed lemon grass into the gravy.
4. Add the curry powder and then sweet potato to thicken the gravy. Stir frequently to achieve a smooth consistency.
5. Add salt and sugar to taste
Preparing the noodles:
1. Blanch noodles and beansprouts in a pot of boiling water. Do not overcook the noodles and bean sprouts or they will be soggy. Place on a dish.
2. Pour gravy over the noodles and bean sprouts.
3. Garnish with fried bean curd, prawns, fried shallots, Chinese celery and sliced green chillies and also slices of hard-boiled eggs.
Tips:
1. Eggs may be sliced using a piece of string, egg cutter or a sharp knife. This way the slices of eggs can be cut very thinly without breaking.
2.Prepare noodles only when the dish is about to be served.
Learn about the simple, nutritious and ever delicious asian food. Happy cooking!!:)
