Cardiovascular diseases are a class of conditions associated with heart and blood vessels. Anything that affects the normal heart and blood vessel functioning is considered risk factors of the diseases, including the heart's muscle, valves or rhythm, and blockage of blood vessels.
According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 610,000 people die of heart disease every year that's 1 in every 4 deaths. The disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the location that affects the functioning of the heart and blood vessels, including atherosclerosis caused by the blockade of the blood vessel due to the accumulation of plaques in the arteries and arrhythmias caused by abnormal heart rhythms.
Coronary artery disease is a condition of narrowing coronary arteries that lead to blockage of the blood flow in the arteries as a result of hardening arterial wall, cholesterol building up in the arteries, chemicals, such as cadmium clog up arteries, etc.
The disease has been found to affect the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.
Coronary artery disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States.
According to statistics, coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease that causes the death of over 370,000 people every year, representing 28% of all death in the United States.
Sadly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately, 735,000 Americans have a heart attack each year.
What causes plaques to build up on the arterial is debatable. However, researchers suggested that the Western diet is associated with a significantly increased risk of coronary artery disease.
Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belong to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. Since kale's leave is highly nutritious and easy to grow with a range of long season from the middle of winter through the beginning of spring, it is cultivated as foods in most parts of Europe.
On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers evaluated the effect of 3-month kale (Brassica oleracea acephala) juice supplementation on coronary artery disease.
The study included 32 men with hypercholesterolemia (> 200 mg/dL) recruited after annual health examinations among the faculty and staff at university and consumed 150 mL of kale juice per day for a 12-week intervention period.
Based on the blood samples used to evaluate biochemical profiles before and after supplementation, researchers found that
* Serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol, and HDL- to LDL-cholesterol ratio were significantly increased by 27% and 52%, respectively.
* The LDL-cholesterol concentration and the atherogenic index were significantly reduced by 10% (P=0.0007) and 24.2% (P<0.0001), respectively without affecting body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, or nutrient intakes after three months of supplementation.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Regular meals supplementation with kale juice can favorably influence serum lipid profiles and antioxidant systems, and hence contribute to reducing the risks of coronary artery disease in male subjects with hyperlipidemia".
Taken altogether, kale may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease in patients with hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
