Strawberries, A Natural Treatment for High Blood Pressure with No Side Effects

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belonging to the family Roseaceae.

The tasty fruits have been grown all over the world in a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

The major chemical compounds of strawberry include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

Hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure.

High blood pressure can be acute or chronic. Acute high blood pressure most often occurs to people with sudden stress.

Sometimes it can be caused by intense physical exercise. As the heart must pump harder to provide the needs of nutrients and oxygen.

Most cases of chronic high blood pressure are associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and chronic diseases such as kidney disease, leading to the onset of strokes and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Duangtep Y, the lead scientists in the team of heart disease and stroke at the District Health Office, Mae Fah Luang in the examine the risk of an unhealthy lifestyle and hypertension wrote, "Multiple logistic regression analysis shows the factors associated with hypertension among the hill tribe people studied were smoking, no or irregular exercise, being overweight, having obesity, and having a high-frequency intake of fatty foods".

These results strongly indicated that by following a healthy lifestyle, hypertension is preventable.

Unfortunately, according to the statistics, approximately 75 million American adults (32%) have high blood pressure. In other words, high blood pressure affects 1 in every 3 adults in the US.

In the differentiate the association of the high blood pressure in the contribution to cardiovascular disease and stroke, some scientists indicated these results overwhelmingly suggested hypertension has become a global burden and a growing public health problem worldwide.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, researchers at the Universidade de São Paulo assessed the fruit extracts of different strawberry cultivars for their potential in inhibition of hypertension.

According to the DPPH radical scavenging assay, the fruit extracts inhibited alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) relevant for potentially managing hyperglycemia and hypertension.

The Strawberries high alpha-glucosidase and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity was attributed to the presence of ellagic acid, quercetin, and chlorogenic acid.

Water extracts of Jewel and Ovation cultivars strawberry had moderated ACE inhibition compared to low inhibition observed in other cultivars.

In vitro, strawberry fruit extracts inhibited the expression of angiotensin-1-converting enzyme (ACE) activity correlated to phenolic content and antioxidant activity.

These results suggested that strawberries could be considered a potential dietary source with anti-hyperglycemic and antihypertensive potential.

Dr. Cheplick S, the lead author said, "Strawberry cultivars with combined inhibitory potential against alpha-glucosidase and ACE and with moderate or low alpha-amylase inhibitory potential could be targeted for potential management of hyperglycemia-linked type 2 diabetes and related complication of hypertension".

Furthermore, by examing the potential health benefits of purified ellagitannins from strawberries in relation to the antiproliferative activity and in vitro inhibition of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) relevant for potential management of hyperglycemia and hypertension in patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers found that purified ellagitannins isolated from the strawberry have high α-amylase and ACE inhibitory activities.

However, these compounds had low α-glucosidase inhibitory activity.

In the final report of the experiment, Dr. Pinto Mda S, wrote, "the ellagitannins and ellagic acid have good potential for the management of hyperglycemia and hypertension linked to type 2 diabetes".

Taken altogether, adding a portion of strawberry into a daily diet may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of high blood pressure.
