Yoga Participated Attenuated Symptoms and Treatment of Depression

Good news for attendees in yoga lessons, some scientists suggested that yoga may be the best treatment used as adjunct intervention for patients with continued depressive symptoms despite antidepressant treatment.

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a love one, and illness. Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing in an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.

Antidepressant is a type of conventional medicine used as first line treatment of depression.

Yoga is an ancient practical technique of India, included breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture,..... with an aim to achieve harmonization of the body, mind, and spirit.

In a randomized controlled trial of weekly yoga classes (n = 63) vs health education classes (Healthy Living Workshop; HLW; n = 59) in individuals with elevated depression symptoms and antidepressant medication use. HLW served as an attention-control group, with intervention period of 10 weeks, with follow-up assessments 3 and 6 months afterwards, group attended yoga class showed decreased levels of depression in comparison to control group.
At 6-month follow-up, researchers found that 51% of yoga participants displayed an improvement of great than 50% in reduction in depression symptoms compared with 31% of HLW participants.

Healthy Living Workshop is a form of self management program with an aim to assist participants to learn self-management skills in dealing symptoms of their chronic condition, and emotions when living with a chronic condition..., particularly in patients with chronic depression.

The program also is considered as a self care tool for caregivers, including family and friends caring for older adults suffering with chronic conditions to reduce personal stress, change negative self-talk....

In fact, yoga participation in deep relaxation and meditation creates a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping stage with an aim to improve sleep, calm the mind and ameliorate stress that may boost the production of hormone endorphins in reduced state of depression.

Furthermore, deep breathing and meditation in yoga practice also promoted physical and mental health, particular for people struggling with depression and induced far fewer side effects and risk of potential drug interactions. Most students after taking yoga class for a few weeks also indicated that they have reduced intake of anti depressant doses.

Indeed, in compared to anti depressant in induced serious symptoms of mood disorder causing sadness and serious mental health issues accompanied with physical side effects of nausea and insomnia, yoga deep breathing and meditation eased the the above symptoms and side effect without the use of potentially harmful medication, the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine study suggested.

Dr. Uebelacker LA, the lead author suggested, yoga participants expressed a fewer depression symptoms which was found over the entire follow-up period. the benefits of yoga may gradually accumulate over time.

Nevertheless, a recruited 38 adults in San Francisco meeting criteria for major depression of mild-to-moderate severity, per structured psychiatric interview and scores of 14-28 on Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI) study also found that the efficacy of yoga in demonstration of decline in BDI scores than controls and yoga participants were more likely to achieve remission, defined per final BDI score ≤ 9 (p-value = 0.018)in adults with mild-to-moderate major depression.
Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI) is a psychometric tests used to measure the severity of depression, containing questionnaire of 21-question multiple-choice self-report inventory.

And reduced BDI is an indication of improvement in compared to before intervention score.

Collectively, people with the depressive syndrome may be benefits in reduction of symptoms, if participated in yoga class regardless of the treatment of antidepressant medicine.
