Cruciferous Vegetables, the Best Anti- Obesity Natural Whole Food Medicine

Recent study conducted by the Taipei Medical University suggested that indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a cruciferous vegetable derivative, may have a potential effect in decreased body weight and fat accumulation in obese patients

Cruciferous vegetables are the group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli, etc.

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat that has accumulated over time.
According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI over 30 is an indication of obesity. Approximately, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese,

According to the Taipei Medical University indole-3-carbinol (I3C), isolated from Cruciferous Vegetables, induced anti-obesity expression by inhibited intracellular lipid accumulation of cell size increase of fat cells and pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6), the parameters related to obesity.

In Male C57BL/6 mice fed with a control diet (C group), high-fat diet (HF group) and HF+5 mg kg(-1) I3C (HFI group), than HFI group injected with I3C intraperitoneally for 12 weeks, I3C treatment group ameliorated free radicals production and increase expression of the gene in regulated fatty acid storage and glucose metabolism, important parameters in related to obese onset.

Additionally, in vivo treatment with I3C reduced inflammation caused by the infiltration of macrophages, a type of white blood cell in epididymal adipose tissue and in vitro, the addition of I3C decreased oxidative production and activation of inflammatory expression.

Dr. Chang HP, the lead author said, " decreased body weight and fat accumulation,....., were associated with improved glucose tolerance and with a modulated expression of adipokines(secreted by adipose tissue.) and lipogenic(the process converted to fatty acids)-associated gene products"

In fact, Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) prevents diet-induced obesity by modulation of multiple genes expression involved the process of cell differentiation in production of fat cell and induced heat caused by inflammatory of fat cell underneath the skin.

By inhibiting the gene expression involved obesity and regulating the cell differentiation in the fat cells and preventing fat tissue accumulation through its chemical constituents, cruciferous vegetables may have a potential benefit in preventing obesity and metabolic disorders.
