Yoga, in Reduced Risk and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Disorders

Yoga, as an adjunct intervention may be combined to standard treatment in reduced symptoms and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, some scientists suggested.

Gastrointestinal diseases are the class of diseases of the digestive system including the diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum

In comparison of the effectiveness of standard medical care (SMC) and mixture of yoga poses, meditation, and relaxation exercises given once a week in group of 69 patients, ages 8 to 18 years, with abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorders (AP-FGIDs), at the end of experiment, yoga participated group demonstrated a significant improvement of all aspects related to abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorders (AP-FGIDs) of 58% in conpared to only 29% of non yoga group.

Subanalyses over the time period of 12 months, also expressed a significantly greater reduction of pain score by 50% in favor of YT.

In fact, the presence of abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorders (AP-FGIDs may be a stress-related disease. As stress elevates hormone production of cortisol levels in the activation of the "flight or fight" response which directs blood flow to the nervous system, causing the reduced blood circulation for the muscle of the digestive system to perform its function optimally, thus inducing symptoms expression of digestive disorder such as abdominal pain.

According to Dr. E A Mayer in the article of The neurobiology of stress and gastrointestinal disease, "the role of stress in the modulation of the most common gastrointestinal disorders has traditionally been considered a domain of psychology and has frequently been lumped together with the role of ..... Chronically elevated cortisol levels".

Additionally, stress also was found to associate to reduce the function of the immune system in fighting against viral bacterial invasion, in induced gastrointestinal infection and inflammation.

Some researchers suggested that chronic stress may induce ulcer as a result of overexpression of hormone adrenaline and depressed digestive system.

Yoga exercise has been found to induce a state of calmness in reduced central nervous tension caused by stress events and create a clear mind to tackle the stress in a positive way through relaxation and breathing, particularly, in harmonization of the mind and body, yoga leads us to the stage existed in the present moment and connected mindful, conscious and connected way in solving stress.

Dr. Korterink JJ, the led author said, "At 1-year follow-up, YT in addition to standard care was superior compared with SMC according to treatment success, PIS, and reduction of school absence".

Interestingly, yoga therapy also showed to improve gastrointestinal disorder in day time behavior problems of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), by reduced levels of inflammation in the intestinal tract, irritation bowel syndrome, bloating and other digestion related problems.

Additional analysis also suggested that child attended yoga class also expressed improved Gl problems such as chronic constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloody stools, vomiting, and flatulence.

In-depth differentiation, yoga exercised by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exerted a significant improvement in overall aspects.

Dr. Kumar Narasingharao, the led author after taking into account of other confounders, at the conclusion said, "Yoga affects both physiological and psychological level which helps in the overall development of ASD children and thus, enhancing the quality of life of children as well as family".

The information findings suggested that yoga may be used as a secondary form of therapy to assist standard intervention in reduced risk and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders
