Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause
in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their
difference in living style and social structure. It is defined as faulty
function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it
effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes
with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome
occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the
period starts.
Chinese herbalists believe PMS is also caused by a) Deficiency of yang
qi Deficiency of yang in the kidney leading to over production of bad
estrogen and kidney abnormal function in regulating urinary secretion
resulting in back pain,
water retention, tiredness and fatigue. b) Deficiency of yin qi Yin qi
deficiency normally happens to women in peri menopause. It may happens
to women with PMS with symptoms of night sweats and other symptoms of
menopause as resulting of low levels of estrogen being produced before
period.
1. Rehmannia glutinosa (shu di huang)
Rehmannia glutinose besides has been used in traditional Chinese
medicine in treating kidney disorder, it also helps to restore the
balance of yin and yang qi of the kidney resulting in lessening the
symptoms of water retention, weight gain for women with pre menstrual
syndrome. It is said to contains substances which help to improve sexual
desire before and after ovulation.
2. Morinda root ( ba ji tian)
Morinda root besides has been used in traditional medicine in treating
yang kidney qi deficiency, it also helps to improve immune system before
ovulation resulting in lessening the nervous tension for some women
with PMS.
3. Cuscuta (tu si zi)

4. Cinnamon bark (rou gui)

our body including liver and kidney, it also promotes the kidney yang
qi circulation and healthy adrenal gland resulting in lessening the
symptoms of nervous tension caused by over production of certain hormone
in the adrenal gland.

Water plantain root helps to release the kidney qi by improving the
kidney in water metabolism resulting in lessening the symptoms of water
retention and weight gain for some women with PMS.
