Bromelain Protects the tissues On Chronic Wound Healing

A chronic wound is a wound that does not heal within a predictable period of time.

It may be a result of the interruption of the stage of wound healing or damage of the blood vessels that have a function in providing necessary conditions to promote the closure of the wound as seen in a diabetic leg ulcer.

In other words, any wound that does not heal with 3 months is considered a chronic wound.

According to the statistics provided by the study "An Economic Evaluation of the Impact, Cost, and Medicare Policy Implications of Chronic Nonhealing Wounds", approximately, 2% of the population in developed countries suffer from chronic wounds.

Additionally, every year, more than 305 million cases of acute, traumatic and burn wounds are treated globally.

Believe it or not, chronic and acute wound affects more than nine times of people around the world compared to those living with cancer.

Some researchers suggested that pressure, trauma and/or lower extremity wounds, increased the bacterial load, interruption of the stage of wound healing including excessive proteases, degraded cell surface structures, and inappropriate treatment are considered the most potential causes of the conditions.

More precisely, if we can protect all stages of wound healing without interruption, the chronic wound can be preventable.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent for the treatment of pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of the chronic wound, researchers examined the efficacy of bromelain-based enzymatic debridement of chronic wounds.

The study included 24 patients with chronic wounds of different aetiologies.

According to 2 consecutive single-arm studies assessing the enzymatic debridement efficacy in 2 medical centers, all wounds achieved an average of 68% ± 30% debridement in an average of 3.5 ± 2.8 enzymatic debridement 4-hour sessions.

17/24 patients showed the responding wounds (venous, diabetic, pressure, and post-traumatic aetiologies) of an average of 85% ± 12% debridement in 3.2 ± 2.5 applications, compared to 7/24 patients with no response.

There were no adverse effects reported by the patients. Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "These preliminary results indicate the potential safety and efficacy of bromelain-based enzymatic debridement in chronic wounds".

In vitro, according to the results of two soft tissue healing--fibroblasts and microvascular endothelial cells--were used as mono- and co-culture with bromelain, bromelain attenuated endothelial cell and fibroblast proliferation moderately.

The inhibition of cell proliferation was not associated with cell apoptosis but cell cycle arrest in the G0 phase.

In the comparable tested, bromelain did not reduce endothelial cell migration. whereas fibroblast migration was clearly slowed down.

In other words, bromelain displayed a significant decrease of myofibroblasts under both normoxic (from 19 to 12 %) and hypoxic conditions (from 22 to 15 %) coincident with higher levels of anti-inflammatory expression.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Usage of bromelain as a therapeutic drug for chronic human wounds thus remains a very promising concept for the future".

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other remedies may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic wounds, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Enhances the Ratio of Human Gut Microbiota

Gut microbiota is a community of microbes living in the gastrointestinal tract.
Believe it or not, there are over trillions of microorganisms, including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes.

In a healthy individual, the ratio of good and bad microbes in the gut are balanced. However, people who are under constant stress or have a psychological condition such as anxiety, and depression, and long-term use of antibiotics may have a negative impact on the ratio.

In other words, emotional problems, use of antibiotics may alter the ratio of the microbes in the gut, leading to inflammation, oxidative stress, and blood sugar imbalances.

Dr. Ruth K. Dudek-Wicher, the lead scientists wrote, "Gut microbial imbalance (dysbiosis) has been linked to important human diseases and inflammation-related disorders".

And, "...the impact of different antibiotics causing such long-term consequences as decreased microbial diversity, modulation of the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratio, Clostridium difficile overgrowth, and increased expansion of the opportunistic pathogens Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia spp., and Klebsiella spp.".

More precisely, imbalanced gut community microbes ratio can induce certain health problems including
* Decreasing the interaction with the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.

* Increasing the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

* Reducing nutrient extraction from the diet, thus increasing the risk of obesity and obese complication.

* Failure to control brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that can lead to bad neurobehaviors.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the improvement of bacterial composition in the gut, researchers
examined the effects of curcumin in the gut microbiota in dysbiosis, a condition that links to many metabolic diseases.

According to the tested assays, curcumin and its derivatives exerted direct regulative effects on the gut microbiota by increasing the ratio of bacteria composition in the flavor of good bacterias.

Futhermore, in the testing the turmeric tablets in the gut microbiota determined by 16S rDNA sequencing, researchers divided.14 healthy human subjects into 3 groups with extract of piperine (Bioperine) (n = 6), curcumin with Bioperine tablets (n = 5), or placebo tablets (n = 3).

According to the bacterial analysis, turmeric-treated subjects displayed a modest 7% increase in observed species compared to control with an overall reduction in species by 15%.

Moreover, curcumin displayed an average increase of 69% in detected species, depending on the gut microbiota response to individual subjects.

More precisely, in "responsive" subjects curcumin increased in most Clostridium spp., Bacteroides spp., Citrobacter spp., Cronobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Enterococcus spp., Klebsiella spp., Parabacteroides spp., and Pseudomonas spp. and reduced relative abundance of several Blautia spp. and most Ruminococcus spp.

In other words, curcumin improved the ratio of gut microbiota by stimulating the production of "good bacterial and reducing the levels of "bad" bacterias in the colon.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "All participants' microbiota displayed significant variation over time and individualized response to treatment. Among the responsive participants, both turmeric and curcumin altered the gut microbiota in a highly similar manner".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of imbalanced ratio of gut microbiome composition, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betanin Normalizes Your High Blood Pressure

Hypertension is a medical condition caused by abnormally high pressure that presses against the wall of the arteries, affecting the heart function in pumping blood to the body.

Hypertension is a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome that facilitates the risk of cardiovascular disease and types 2 diabetes

Epidemiologically, uncontrolled high blood pressure has been found to induce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Most patients with high blood pressure are asymptomatic. However, the long-term elevated force of the blood against your artery walls may result in symptoms of headache, dizziness, and shortness of breath, early signs of heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 75 million American adults (32%) have high blood pressure. In other words, 1 in every 3 American adults is affected by high blood pressure.

Believe it or not, the actual numbers of high blood pressure are substantially higher if people with the stage of prehypertension are also taking into account.

Sadly, only half of the people with high blood pressure in the US are under control.

There are 2 types of hypertension, including primary hypertension that takes years to develop and secondary hypertension associated with other medical conditions, such as kidney and thyroid disease.

Out of many prevalent factors, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a direct implication on the onset of hypertension in American adults.

Dr.Dixon W. Wilde, the lead scientist wrote, "Dietary fat contributes to the elevation of blood pressure and increases the risk of stroke and coronary artery disease".

And, "an elevation of plasma FAs may contribute to the development of hypertension via a process involving the elevation of Ca2+ current density and alteration of channel kinetics in the vascular smooth muscle membrane".

The results strongly suggested the high-fat diet induced elevated FAs associated with the alternation of vascular smooth muscle membrane in the initiation of hypertension.

Betanin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of betanin against a hypertensive animal model.

The study included animals divided into six main groups with each group containing 5 animals.

* Group I received the vehicle,

* Group II received dexamethasone injection (20 µg/kg/day, s.c.) for 14 days,

* Group III received an extract of Beta vulgaris (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days,

* Group IV received an extract of Beta vulgaris (300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days,

* Group V received dexamethasone injection (20 ugs/kg/day, s.c.) and extract of Beta vulgaris (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days and

* Group VI received dexamethasone (DEXA) injection (20 µg/kg/day, s.c.) and extract of Beta vulgaris (300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days.

At the end of the experiment after 14 days, the group treated with a combination of dexamethasone and beta vulgaris (100 and 300 mg/kg p.o. for 14 days) showed a significant decrease in heart rate compared to Dexamethasone group.

According to the tested assays, Dexamethasone treated group showed a significant elevation (p<0.05) in systolic blood pressure (SBP), vascular reactivity changes to Catecholamine, compared to the control group.

Injection of beta vulgaris extract (100, 300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days in dexamethasone administered rats significantly (p<0.05) demonstrated a significant reversal of such change.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "The methanolic-HCl extract of Beta vulgaris has antihypertensive activity in Dexamethasone models".

In other words, betanin detected by phytochemical analysis from beta vulgaris extract protected the heart function and blood vessels through its antihypertensive properties.

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Whole Food Cucumber's Cucurbitacin B (CuB) Neuroprotective Effects

Neuroprotection is mechanisms and strategies associated with the protection of the brain functioning through the use of agents, including herbal medicines.

In other words, the neuroprotective effect is to protect the integrity of the viability of the neuron against nerve injury or degeneration that affects the central nervous system functioning.

Neurological disorders are diseases of the central nervous system including the brain, spine and the nerves that connect them. Most common diseases associated with neurological disorders in the elderly are dementia.

In the elderly, most common types of neurodegenerative diseases are
* Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking, and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

Over 1 million people in the US alone are currently afflicted by Alzheimer's disease because of degeneration of hippocampus and cerebral cortex of the brain where memory, language, and cognition are located.

* Absence of acetylcholine
If the nerves located in front of the brain perish causes the diminished quality of acetylcholine that affects language difficulty, memory loss, concentration problem, and reduced mobile skills.

* Dementia due to long-term alcohol abuse
Dementia is common in patients with alcoholism. Most classic is the Korsakoff's dementia that affects short term memory and often associated with memory losses.

* Multi-infarct dementia
Also known as vascular dementia, is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's disease in older adults caused by different mechanisms all resulting in vascular lesions in the brain.

5. Parkinson's disease
Parkinson disease (PD) is a disabling, progressive condition associated with the cognitive deficit due to the interruption of frontal-subcortical loops that facilitate cognition and that parallel the motor loop.

6. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)
People who have eaten contaminated beef many years may be infected without even knowing it. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a quickly progressing and fatal disease that consists of dementia, muscle twitching, and spasm.

7. Subdural hematoma
It is the accumulation of blood beneath the outer covering of the brain that results from the rupture of a blood vessel. Subdural hemorrhages may cause an increase in intracranial pressure.. Acute subdural hematoma has a high mortality rate.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural compound which processes neuroprotective property, researchers investigated cucumber leaf extract against oxidative stress induced neuron dysfunction associated with diabetes mellitus.

The study included 30 adult male albino rats divided into 5 groups (n=6) including a normal control group and four diabetic groups.

Single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ; 60 mg/kg bw) induced diabetes rats also assigned into untreated diabetic control group compared to the other three other groups treated with cucumber leaf extract at the doses of 30, 60 and 120 mg/kg bw for 30 days.

According to brain evaluation, treated rat showed a significant effect in lowering the levels of blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin.

Proinflammatory expression and neurons oxidative stress in the brain is also decreased observed by the levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin levels, and brain malondialdehyde content, respectively.

Furthermore, a protein associated with programming neuron death was inhibited by the injection of cucumber leaf extract compared to control.

The efficacy of cucumber leaf extract that exerts neurons protection was attributed to the increased production of plasma dopamine, melatonin in the promotion of brain activity accompanied by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels and antioxidants produced by the host.

In other words, cucumber leaf extract improved the brain function not only through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties but also the promotion of energy supply to the brain cells.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "it can be concluded that the C. melo var. flexuosus leaf extract exerts a neuroprotective effect against oxidative damage associated with diabetes".

Taken altogether, cucumber leaf extract may be used as a neuroprotective supplement, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry, Protect the Brain Cell Against Memory Impairment

Memory impairment is a condition associated with a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. Over time, the condition can worsen enough to affect the quality of life and daily activity.

Memory loss can be temporarily forgotten, such as forgetting to pay a monthly bill and permanent such as no longer know your name. Many factors can cause memory change. However, memory impairment in the elderly in most cases is associated with a gradual loss and death of neurons such as Alzheimer's disease.

Some memory change can be resolved on their own or cured by medical treatment. Others due to the loss of neuron and quantity capacity cannot be revered such as dementia.

According to statistics, dementia affects 47.5 million people worldwide. Every year over 7.7 million new cases are diagnosed. The disease is a leading cause of dependency and mental impairment among the elderly population.

The aim of the treatment of irreversible memory impairment is to improve the quality of life by delaying the progression of underlying diseases such as AD and PD.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of memory deficits, with no side effects compared to those of conventional medicine, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin pigments, a group of flavonoids, and a widespread class of phenolic compounds found abundantly in bilberry.

The study included the examination of elevated plus-maze and radial maze tasks cognitive performance fed approximately 3.2 mg kg(-1)day (oral) the anthocyanins. The lyophilized berries were administered for 30 days before the first training.

According to the step-down inhibitory avoidance, open field analysis, lyophilized berries significantly enhanced short-term memory, but not long-term memory and induced an increase in the number of crossings in the first exposure to the open field.

Interestingly, prolonged treatment with lyophilized berries did not have any significant effects in the elevated plus-maze task but improved working memory in the radial maze, with significant differences observed during sessions 1-2 and 4, but did not alter reference memory in this task.

Researchers after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "These results suggest that lyophilized berries may be beneficial in the prevention of memory deficits, one of the symptoms related to AD, and corroborate previous findings showing that flavonoids present effects in several learning paradigms".

In other words, the efficacy of bilberry protects the memory function against the onset of deficits was attributed by the bioactive compound anthocyanin.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment symptom of memory deficits in patients with AD, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Lycopene Kills Head and Neck Cancer Cells, According to Study

Cancer is a group of disease caused by cell growth irregularly in the affected tissue caused by DNA alternation.

Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers originated from the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, approximately 4,300 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer of the head and neck every year. Head and neck cancer also cause the death of nearly 1,610 of Canadian.

The overall survival rate of 5 years after diagnosis is 62% tobacco use, alcohol consumption and viral infection including human papillomavirus (HPV) infection (for oropharyngeal cancer), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection (for nasopharyngeal cancer).

Some researchers suggested that diet pattern may have a strong impact on the onset of the disease.

Dr. Shu-Chun Chuang, the lead scientist wrote, "A dietary pattern score combining high fruit and vegetable intake and low red meat intake, was created. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the dietary items on the risk of HNC were estimated with a two-stage random effects logistic regression model".

And, "Higher dietary pattern scores, reflecting high fruit/vegetable and low red meat intake, were associated with reduced HNC risk (per score increment OR=0.90, 95% CI=0.84–0.97)".

In other words, if you are Western diet follower, you risk of head and neck cancer increased substantially compared to those who follow a traditional diet.

Most common symptoms of head and neck cancer are totally depending on the location of cancer including a lump or sore that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, trouble swallowing, or a change in the voice.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.
In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of head and neck cancer, researchers examined the lycopene overload and cytotoxic effects on HNSCC cells.
According to the cell analysis, lycopene at a dose of >10 µM for >24 h inhibited the growth of FaDu and Cal27 cells in a time‑ and dose‑dependent manner.
Furthermore, injection of lycopene not only provided the clearest increase in growth inhibition by cell apoptosis but also limited the cancer cell invasive activity at a dose of 25 µM.

More precisely, lycopene killed cancer cell by exhibiting the protein associated with cell death programming and apoptosis.
Dr. Ye M, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, " lycopene induced the upregulation of the pro‑apoptotic protein, B‑cell lymphoma‑associated X protein".

Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of head and neck cancer, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Inhibits Parameters Associated with β-thalassemia

Anemia is a health condition in which our body do not have enough red blood cells or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood that carries the function of delivering oxygen and nutrient to the tissues.

Patients with Beta- thalassemia minor have a slight lowering of the beta hemoglobin level in the blood similar to those with mild iron-deficiency anemia.

Beta thalassemia can be classified into
* Thalassemia minor, the mild case of anemia. is the most common anemia in people of Mediterranean descent. The blood cells of patients with thalassemia minor are smaller than normal blood cells and easily die off, causing not enough new blood cells to replace the loss of red blood cells.

* Thalassemia major
Thalassemia major also called Cooley's anemia is an inherited disorder that affects the production of normal hemoglobin. Thalassemia major is a deadly disease without frequent blood transfusions, people with this kind of anemia may not survive because of iron building up in heart and other organs, resulting in heart failure.

Most common symptoms of beta thalassemia are fatigue, weakness, or shortness of breath, a pale appearance or yellow color to the skin (jaundice), irritability, deformities of the facial bone, slow growth, a swollen abdomen, and dark urine.

If you have experienced persistently the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor for preventive measure.

On finding a natural treatment of anemia, researchers examined the effects of curcumin, the active polyphenol in turmeric, on iron overload, hepcidin level, and liver function in β-thalassemia major patients.

The double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on 68 β-thalassemia major patients, randomly divided into 2 groups to receive either 500 mg curcumin capsules (total: 1,000 mg) twice daily or placebo for 12 weeks.

Based on the observation of the tested assays, curcumin group showed a significant decrease in levels of nontransferrin bound iron (NTBI), aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) compared to the placebo group.

In other words, turmeric protects the integrity of the red blood by reducing the cellular oxidative stress and inhibiting the iron toxicity in the β-thalassemia major patients without affecting the levels of hepcidin and other variables.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Curcumin administration alleviated the iron burden and liver dysfunction by reducing NTBI, ALT, and AST levels in patients with β-thalassemia major".

Additionally, according to the evaluation of the Mahidol University on 10 β-thalassemia/Hb E patients treated with 500 mg curcuminoids daily for 12 months, injection of the supplement showed significantly decreased intensity in thalassemic plasma, compared to those of normal subjects, including increased levels of plasma levels of proteins associated with the condition and reduced levels of oxidative damage.

More precisely, serum non-transferrin bound iron associated with iron overload, platelet factor-3 like activity, oxidative stress parameters and antioxidant enzymes were also improved after curcuminoids treatment.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of β-thalassemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin, the Best Free Radical Scavenger Against the Onset of Oxidative Stress

Free radical scavengers are antioxidants that inhibit free radicals before they can cause damage to the tissues and organs.

Free radicals are unstable and high reactive atoms with a single electron in the outermost ring. Therefore, in order to maintain stable, free radicals are ready to steal or donate a single electron from other stable atoms in the body, leading to a cascade that cannot be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

In the body, free radical is produced by cell metabolism that provides energy for body needs. Outside of the body, free radicals can be anywhere including the air we breathe and the foods we eat.

In other words, any chemical compound containing oxygen atoms can be free radicals during the process of a chemical reaction.

Most common types of free radical scavengers include
* Bilirubin
Bilirubin is a prosthetic group which breaks down molecules into smaller units to release energy, excrete them through bile and urine.

* Carotenoids
Carotenoids are organic pigments, occurring in the chloroplasts and chromoplasts of plants and some other photosynthetic organisms like algae, some bacteria.

* Flavonoids
Flavonoids neutralize many of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including singlet oxygen, hydroxyl, and superoxide radicals.

* Thiols (R-SH)
Chemically, thiol, an organosulfur compound have strong odors resembling that of garlic plays an important in the functioning of enzyme regulation, control of gene expression, protein trafficking, and receptor signaling.

* Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 enhances energy production by promoting the process of the production of ATP then serving as fuel for the cells and acts an antioxidant to prevent the generation of free radicals during this process.

* Vitamin A, C, E. D.
**Vitamin A
Vitamin A plays an important role that scavenges free radicals in the lining of the mouth and lungs. The vitamin also boosts the immune system in controlling free radicals, preventing oxidation of LDL and enhances the productions of insulin pancreas.

** Vitamin C
Vitamin C, an antioxidant and water soluble vitamin, vitamin C can be easily carried in the blood, The vitamin not only restores the vitamin E but also fights against the forming of free radicals.

** Vitamin E
Vitamin E not only protects muscle weakness, repairs damaged tissues, lowers blood pressure and induce blood clotting in healing wound, but also moves into the fatty medium to prevent lipid peroxidation.

** Vitamin D
vitamin D, a group of fat-soluble secosteroids is also a membrane antioxidant with the ability to inhibit iron-dependent lipid peroxidation in liposomes compared to cholesterol.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the alliin ability to inhibit osteoclast differentiation and fusion on osteoporosis.

According to the results of the experiment, alliin showed significant effects in improvement of bone density in osteoporotic patients by inhibiting receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast fusion and differentiation.in bone resorption by blocking the signaling pathway activation.

Additional differentiation of the alliin osteoporosis protective activity, researchers found that alliin decreased the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by inhibiting the expression enzyme involved in the generation of free radicals.

In other words, alliin protects the bone density by decreasing the bone reabsorption and oxidative stress in the bone tissues.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "The overall results revealed that alliin could be a potential therapeutic agent in the treatment of osteoporosis".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements as a free radical scavenger against the onset of oxidative stress, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

HerbaLTurmeric Blocks the Onset of Oral Mucositis Caused By the Bacterial Infection

Oral mucositis is considered a side effect in patients who undergo cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy and radiation.

In cancer, oral mucositis is caused by the reduced function of the immune system to protect the infection of open sores in the mucosa.

However, poor oral or dental health, smoking or chewing tobacco and drinking alcohol, female gender, dehydration and patients who had previously cancer treatment, have kidney disease are some of the most common risk factors that cause the onset of oral mucositis.

Most common symptoms of oral mucositis are red, shiny, or swollen mouth and gums, sores in the mouth or on the gums or tongue, pain in the mouth or throat, mild burning, or pain when eating food.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of difficulty swallowing or talking, soft, whitish patches or pus in the mouth or on the tongue, particularly the increase of mucus or thicker saliva in the mouth.

Some researchers suggested the onset of oral mucositis in most cases are associated with people with a weakened immune system, including the use of chemotherapy.

Dr. Francesco Chiappelli wrote, "Mucositis is observed in a variety of immunosuppressed patients, but is most often consequential to cancer therapy. It appears as early as the third day of the intervention, and is usually established by Day 7 of treatment".

And, "The precise immune components involved in the etiology of mucositis are unclear, but evidence-based research (EBR) data has shown that applications of granulocyte–macrophage-colony stimulating factor prevent the onset of the exacerbation of oropharyngeal mucositis".

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of oral mucositis(OM), researchers evaluated the effects of turmeric and curcumin in the management of oral mucositis in cancer patients undergoing chemo and/or radiotherapy by searching the database of Cochrane Library, LILACS, LIVIVO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science.

After a two-step selection process, four randomized and one nonrandomized clinical trials were included in the analysis in which 2 studies suggested that topical application of turmeric/curcumin as a gel or mouthwash showed a reduced grade of mucositis, pain, erythema intensity, and ulcerative area.

In other words, the topical application of turmeric or curcumin may be effective in controlling signs and symptoms of oral mucositis in tested patients.

Furthermore, according to the study of 72 golden Syrian hamsters induced mucositis (OM) by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for 4 days randomly allocated into four groups: control, placebo, chamomilla, and a mucoadhesive formulation containing curcuminoid (MFC)
* On day 5, all groups exhibited OM

* On day 8, both MFC and chamomilla groups exhibited better-wound healing compared to other groups.
* Moreover, also on day 8, the MFC group demonstrated inhibited protein associated with stimulating new blood vessel for the OM to grow and proinflammatory cytokines to facilitate symptoms of OM, compared to placebo and control group.

Collectively, Dr. Schmidt TR, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "these findings suggest that MFC has a therapeutic effect on OM, accelerating wound healing through re-epithelization and anti-inflammatory action as modulation of angiogenesis and TGF-β1 expression".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of OM, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Cucumber Protects the Stomach Against Hyper-Acidity

A stomach ulcer is an opened sore in the lining of the stomach.

In other words, if the mucus layer of your stomach that protects your stomach tissues against stomach acid is worn away and stops functioning, you may have a stomach ulcer.

Most common symptoms of stomach ulcer are indigestion caused by reduced function of the stomach, pain or discomfort in the stomach area.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of heartburn, vomiting or vomiting blood, leading to dark blood in stools, or stools that are black or tarry, unexplained weight loss, appetite changes.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms that often change over time, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Epidemiologically, long-term intake of NSAIDs, smoking, excessive alcohol drinking psychological symptoms such as stress and eating spicy food are some of the most stomach ulcer prevalent factors.

According to the statistics, in the US, peptic ulcer disease (PUD) affects approximately 4.5 million people annually and the lifetime prevalence infected by H pylori is approximately 20%.

Believe it or not, approximately, 1/10 people in the US will develop an ulcer in the stomach or small intestine at some points in their lives.

Conventionally, depending on the causes of stomach ulcer, the patient may be prescribed by
* Antibiotic medications for the treatment of bacterial infection.

* Medications that reduce or block acid production and promote healing.

* Particularly, the medications that protect the lining of the stomach.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of stomach ulcer, researchers compared the compares the antacid effect of broccoli, kale, radish, cucumber, lemon juice, cold milk and curd in an artificial stomach model.

According to the tested results, cucumber exerted an acid neutralizing effect better than those of water.

Compared to other healthy foods, cucumber exhibited a significantly higher duration of consistent neutralization.

In other words, cucumber protected the stomach against acidity by restoring the natural gastric balance and function, which may have a strong impact on curbing acid reflux and reducing the burning sensation due to hyperacidity.

Through its acid neutralizing effect, cucumber may soothe the inflamed mucosa of the stomach against the onset of ulcer.
Based on the results, Dr. after taking other factors into account wrote, "It may be concluded that the natural food ingredients used in this study exhibited significant antacid activity, justifying their use as essential dietary components to counter hyperacidity".

Taken altogether, cucumber may be used for the treatment of stomach hyperacidity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane Suppresses the Progression of Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is an advanced form of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) caused by a buildup of fat in the liver.

NASH has been found to induce the formation of scars of the liver, a leading cause of cirrhosis associated with the onset of liver cancer and liver failure.

The progression of NASH has been a leading cause of liver transplant.

Patients with NASH are asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience vague pain and discomfort in the abdomen.

The causes of NAFLD are identified. Some researchers suspected that long-term unhealthy diet accompanied by physical inactivity may have a strong impact in accelerating the onset of the disease.

Dr. Kristen Stephenson in the investigation of the western diet in the risk NAFLD, wrote, "Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a disease of increasing interest, as its prevalence is on the rise. NAFLD has been linked to metabolic syndrome, which is becoming more common due to the Western diet".

And, "WD mouse models consisting of high fat, cholesterol, and a combination of high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, or glucose not only lead to metabolic syndrome but also induce NAFLD".

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

On finding the natural ingredient for the treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), researchers at the joint investigation led by the Fudan University examined the effects of 3, 3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) on methionine-choline-deficient (MCD)-diet induced mouse nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

NASH mice were administrated with or without DIM at different concentrations for 8 weeks

In vivo, DIM treatment alleviated hepatic steatosis and inflammation and restored the Treg/Th17 imbalance from MCD diet-induced Th17 dominance to Treg dominance.

In-vitro, instead of suppressing the expression of Th17m, DIM not only significantly promoted the expression of the mRNAs that purify spleen CD4(+) T cells, but also enhanced the immunosuppressive function of these Treg cells.

In MCD-diet mice, DIM significantly exhibited the function of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 in metabolizing liver toxicity, whereas down-regulated those of TLR4 on CD4(+) T cells in the promotion of autoimmune inflammation, leading to Treg/Th17 imbalance.

In other words, DIM treated NASH by dramatical induction of Treg dominance to alleviate intra-hepatic inflammation.

Dr. Liu Y, the lead scientist wrote, "dietary cruciferous vegetables (containing abundant DIM) might exist as a protective factor for patients with NASH-related liver diseases".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betanin Inhibits Lung Cancer in Vitro and Vivo

The lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest with the main function to process of gas exchange during breathing.

In other words, lung transfer life-giving oxygen into the blood supply and remove carbon dioxide produced by cells metabolism from the blood.

Additionally, the lung is also the first line defense against inhaled particles and prevent the circulation of emboli such as blood clot (thrombus), a fat globule (fat embolism), a bubble of air or other gas (gas embolism), or foreign material.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the lung as a result of the alternation of cells in the lung tissue.

Most cases of lung cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the lung tissue, before proliferating into deeper layers to induce a tumor.

At the early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic. However, as the proliferation continues over time, as the later stage, the primary lung cancer not only can elevate the general symptoms shared by all cancers accompanied by localized specific symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding, but also travel a distance away from the lung to cause secondary metastasis via circulation of blood and fluids.

Most common secondary metastatic cancers from primary lung cancer are adrenal gland, bones, brain, and liver.

Out of many risk factors associated with lung cancer, smoking has been found to a strongly negative implication to induce the early onset of the disease.

Dr. Ozlü T, the lead scientist said, "Nowadays, around one-third of adults are known to be smokers, and smoking rates are increasing among the female population. It is estimated that deaths attributable to tobacco use will rise to 10 million by 2025, and one-third of all adult deaths are expected to be related to cigarette smoking".

And, " The association between cigarettes and lung cancer has been proven by large cohort studies. Tobacco use has been reported to be the main cause of 90% of male and 79% of female lung cancers. 90% of deaths from lung cancer are estimated to be due to smoking. The risk of lung cancer development is 20-40 times higher in lifelong smokers compared to non-smokers".

The finding strongly suggested the risk of lung cancer in smokers is substantially higher compared to non-smokers.

Betanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive activity of betanin by oral consumption was investigated in two mouse lung tumor models.

The study included Vinyl carbamate (VC) and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) induced lung tumors in female A/J mice, following by the treatment of betanin in drinking water.

Betanin significantly decreased tumor multiplicity and tumor load induced by Vinyl carbamate (VC) and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P).

Precisely, tumor multiplicity and tumor load were decreased by 20% and 39% in the VC lung model, and by 46% and 65% in the B(a)P lung model, respectively.

Betanin inhibited the lung tumor by reducing the number of microvessels formation and increasing the expression of a protein associated with programs cell death.

In other words, the lung tumor inhibitory effects were involved in the induction of apoptosis and angiogenesis.

The findings strongly suggested that betanin significantly inhibits lung tumorigenesis in vivo.

Moreover, compared to capsanthin, cranberry, red onion skin, and short and long red bell peppers, betanin showed in a vitro inhibitory effect on Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA) induction using Raji cells.

According to the results from the lung bioassays, betanin also revealed a significant lung tumor inhibitory effect.

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Artichoke, the Best for the Treatment of Chronic Constipation

Constipation is a condition of hard and dry stool that are infrequent or hard to pass.

Acute constipation reversed in a few days mostly is caused by staying in a sitting position for long periods of time that kinks up your colon and restrain stool from passing through.

Chronic constipation is a condition characterized by difficult, infrequent, or perceived incomplete evacuation of bowel movements with less than 3 bowel movement a week,

Chronic constipation other than structural and medical problems is normally caused by a diet with low fiber accompanied by the intake of certain medications such as calcium channel blockers, narcotics.

The total fiber intake per day is 25-35 grams, are recommended for people with constipation and general health, depending on your sex, age, and weight.

If you are taking the requirement of fiber daily, but experience symptoms of excess colon gas and flatus, you should cut down on soluble fiber first.

In order to maintain good colon health against constipation, people with chronic constipation with no structural and medical problem should follow a high fiber diet accompanied by increased fluid intake and moderate exercise.

Some researchers suggested that there is a correlation between psychological disorders such as depression in the risk of constipation.

Dr. Janique G. Jessurun, in the study the relationship between psychiatric diagnoses and constipation wrote, "In the stratum of patients older than 60 years, all psychiatric categories except for substance-related disorders were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of constipation".

And, " In the elderly, all measured psychiatric diagnoses are strongly associated with an increased prevalence of constipation".

In other words, adults who are 60 years of age and over with psychiatric disorders are at a higher risk of constipation.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine for as liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researcher on the finding a natural therapeutics for chronic constipation researchers evaluated the effects of probiotic-enriched artichokes on treatment preference, symptom profile and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in constipated subjects, compared with ordinary artichokes.

The double-blind method included 20 constipated patients (3M/17F; 38.8 ± 14.4 years) using a computer-generated randomization list. Each patient consumed 180 g per day of ordinary artichokes or artichokes enriched with Lactobacillus paracasei IMPC 2.1 for 15 days (daily dose of 2 × 10(10) CFU).

80% of participants preferred probiotic-enriched artichokes to ordinary ones. Satisfactory relief of symptoms was significantly higher (P = 0.0014) during the probiotic-enriched artichoke period.

The Bristol chart cluster scores were significantly higher in the combined treatment group (3.3 ± 1.2, 2.9 ± 1.3 2.2 ± 1.2) compared to the baseline, ordinary artichokes, and probiotic-enriched ones, respectively.
Furthermore, GSRS constipation was significantly lower (13.9 ± 0.9, 10.2 ± 0.8, 8.3 ± 0.9; P = 0.032) in the combined treatment group compared to the probiotic group and baseline.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "This trial shows a positive effect on symptoms in constipated patients after intake of probiotic-enriched artichokes".

In order to understand more information about artichoke in the promotion of constipation, researchers assessed the suitability of some vegetables, particularly olives and artichokes, to vehicle probiotic strains into the gastrointestinal tract.

The study included 8 volunteers (3M/5F age 40+/-14 y) integrated their normal diet with artichokes (180 gr) enriched with 20 billions of L. paracasei LMGP22043 for 15 days.

There were no significant differences in the microbiological counts throughout the experimental period. However, the treatment group showed a significant increase of butyric and valeric acids with a concomitant decrease of lactic acid.

The treatment also reduced the fecal beta-glucuronidase activity and abdominal distension and feeling of incomplete evacuation.

Taken altogether, artichoke combined with probiotics may be considered a functional formula for the treatment of patients with chronic constipation with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry In the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

Cardiovascular disease is a general term of diseases associated with the blood vessels and heart, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) affected by obstruction of arteries and stroke affected by the capillaries in the brain.

In other words, the disease in CVD is vary depending on the affected locations. Atherosclerosis is also the most common cause of cardiovascular disease.

The exact causes of CVD are not clear. However, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes mellitus, lack of exercise, obesity, high blood cholesterol, poor diet, and excessive alcohol consumption, are found to associated with the increased risk of CVD.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, over 84 million people in the US suffer from some forms of cardiovascular disease, causing the death of 2,200 people a day.

Sadly, approximately 15 million U.S. adults have coronary heart disease.

Out of many risk factors, some researchers suggested that high blood pressure found in 103 million U.S. adults are one of the major cause of CVD. Believe it or not, approximately 54% of strokes and 47% of coronary heart diseases, worldwide, are attributable to high blood pressure.

Dr. Chen-Yi Wu, the lead scientist said, "The cardiovascular and expanded-cardiovascular mortality risks were lowest when systolic blood pressures were 120 to 129 mm Hg, and increased significantly when systolic blood pressures (SBPs) were ≥160 mm Hg or diastolic BPs were ≥90 mm Hg".

And, " The impacts of stage 2–3 hypertension on mortality risks were significantly increased among women. The mortality risks of hypertension were not attenuated with older age".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer,

In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), a leading cause of death researchers examined the bilberries beneficial effects on CVD risk reduction.

The study included women (n=25) and men (n=11) who consumed 150 g of frozen stored bilberries 3 times a week for 6 weeks.

According to the tested assays, consumption of bilberries showed a decrease of total cholesterol, LDL-C, TG, glucose, albumin, γ-glutamyltransferase, and a positive increase in HDL-C.

All parameters associated with the risk of CVD were decreased substantially at the end of the study. In other words, bilberry reduced the risk of CVD by promoting the blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.

Interestingly, in men, favorable changes were observed in total cholesterol, glucose, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and HDL-C compared to women.

The results strongly support the regular use of bilberries as a dietary source of fruit to reduce the CVDs risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C.

Dr. Habanova M, after taking into account co and confound wrote in the final report, "Changes in other parameters were not significant, for both women and men. Thus, the regular intake of bilberries can be important to reduce CVDs risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a function remedy for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ginger Successfully Treats Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in Vivo, Scientists Find

A polycystic ovarian syndrome is a medical condition characterized by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interfere with the function of the normal ovaries resulting in enlarged ovaries, leading to a hormonal disorder that affects between 6 to 10% of women.

According to the statistics, in the US, about 6 to 10% of women suffered from PCOS.
The causes of PCOS are not identified. However, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition may play a critical role in facilitating the hormone levels and insulin resistance.

Some researchers in the comparison of 80% PCOS prevalent rate in overweight and obesity in women in the US and much lower prevalent rate outside the US suggested that the prevalence and severity of obesity are lower in women with PCOS outside the U.S. probably associated with some environmental factors, such as lifestyle, contribute to development of obesity in PCOS that do not exist in other counties.

Women with PCOS due to hormonal imbalance are associated with a higher risk of infertility.

As of today, treatment of PCOS are medications used mostly to balance the hormones and relieve some of the symptoms, such as acne and weight gain.

Most common symptoms are menstrually related such as irregular period, no period and painful period, insulin resistance, obesity, acne, and male pattern hair growth.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers in the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), compared the effectiveness of ginger with clomiphene on sexual hormones such as Luteinizing hormone (LH), Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estrogen and progesterone in order to treat PCOS effectively with fewer side effects.

The study included 63 adult female rats (170-200 gr) divided randomly into 9 groups as control (not received any interventional substance for 60 and 89 days), sham (were given distilled water and ethyl alcohol intraperitoneally daily for 60 and 89 days), and 7 experimental groups receiving estradiol valerate (PCOS inducing agent, intramuscular) alone and with 100 mg/kg clomiphene or different doses of ginger extract (175 and 350 mg/kg) orally daily for 60 and 89 days.

Clomiphene and ginger extract groups demonstrated significant improvement in hormonal secretion compared to the PCOS-induced group.

Furthermore, clomiphene, compared with the lower dose of ginger extract, had a better improving effect on balancing sexual hormones in PCOS.

Moreover, ginger extract at higher doses has better effects on improving PCOS.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote in the final report, "the long-term administration of clomiphene citrate has some side effects, the use of ginger as a herbal medicine without any side effects at high doses can be an effective and good alternative in improving PCOS".

In order to reveal more information about ginger anti-PCOS property, scientists evaluated the effects of 6-gingerol on the biochemical parameters and ovarian histological improvements in estradiol valerate (EV) induced PCOS rats.

In the study, 36 female Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control, received normal diet, PCOS control, received 4 mg/kg EV injection for 28 days and two experimental groups, received an EV injection for 28 days and followed by 6-gingerol (200 μg/kg and 400 μg/kg) for 14 days.

Before injection of 6-gingerol, administration of EV led to the increasing body and ovarian weights, abnormality in serum sex steroid profile, decreasing antioxidant activity and stimulating the production of COX-2 gene in the expression of inflammation caused by oxidative stress.

Administration of 6-gingerol particularly the 400 μg/kg dose, markedly attenuated these alterations.

The bioactive compound not only inhibited symptoms of PCOS rats by decreased expression of COX-2, but also restored biochemical parameters to normal and decreased of cysts in the ovaries.

Take all together, ginger processed a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
