Ginger' 6-Gingerol Processes Anti-Female Infertility Activity With No Side Effects, Scientists Say
In women, the reproductive organs are the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. The reproductive system works together to produce the female egg cells, transporting them to the fallopian tube where fertilization by a sperm may occur.
In men, the reproductive organs are the testicles. the duct system, which is made up of the epididymis and the vas deferens and the accessory glands, which include the seminal vesicles and prostate gland.
The reproductive system in men plays a critical role in producing, maintaining, and transporting healthy sperms and semen.
Infertility is a condition characterized by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy, including the inability of the woman to carry the pregnancy to full term, after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.
Some researchers suggested that obese women may have the negative implication of getting pregnant and maintaining pregnancy.
Dr. Moran LJ, the lead scientist at the University of Adelaide in the concern of obese effect on the reproductive system wrote, "Overweight and obesity are significant and increasing health problems associated with increased risks of morbidity, quality of life, and metabolic and reproductive health consequences"
And, "In women, being overweight or obese is associated with impaired fertility and decreased the chance of conception both in natural and assisted reproductive technology births. During pregnancy, overweight and obesity are associated with increased risk of adverse maternal and infant health outcomes".
The results strongly suggested that healthy weight women are associated with a lower risk of infertility and adverse maternal and infant health outcome.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of infertility examined the effects of 6-gingerol on the biochemical parameters and ovarian histological improvements in estradiol valerate (EV) induced polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) rats.
The 6 female Wistar rats selected to the study were divided randomly into 4 groups:
* Control were given a normal diet,
* PCOS control, were given4 mg/kg EV injection for 28 days and
* The two experimental groups, were given an EV injection for 28 days and followed by 6-gingerol (200 μg/kg and 400 μg/kg) for 14 days.
Without an injection of 6-gingerol, EV application showed an increase in body and ovarian weights, abnormality in serum sex steroid profile.
Furthermore, EV application also expressed a decreased antioxidant activity and increased production of proinflammatory cytokines associated with the expression of the protein Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2.
6-gingerol treatments, particularly the 400 μg/kg dose, markedly attenuated all these alterations.
Dr. Pournaderi PS, the lead scientists said, "6-gingerol showed beneficial effects in the EV induced PCOS rats via decreased expression of COX-2, restored biochemical parameters to normal and decreased of cysts in the ovaries".
In other words, 6 gingerols improved the fertile profile of female Wistar rats through restored the normal function of the ovaries.
Taken altogether, ginger processed a major compound 6 gingerols may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of female infertility caused by overexpression of ovarian cysts patients with PCOS, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
