In the investigation of essential oil isolated from wild carrot umbels effect in mice induced skin cancer through injection of 7,12-dimethyl benz(a)anthracene (DMBA), after 20 weeks of administered to animals via gavage (0.02 mL of 100% oil), intraperitoneal (0.3 mL of 2% oil), and topical (0.2 mL of 5, 50, and 100% oil) with half-maximal inhibitory concentration IC50, researchers showed that topical administration of 100% mice group exerted in delay skin cancer appearance and inhibited tumor incidence of 89%.

With the concentration of IC40, topical 50% and 5% treatment inhibited tumor incidence by 83% and 36%, respectively.

Topical ingestion of 100, 50, and 5% oil, also revealed a significant decrease of tumor volume by 99, 91, and 70%, respectively.

Intraperitoneally, treatment mice displayed an inhibited tumor by 43% and decreased tumor volume by 85%, whereas gavage treatment showed minimal effects on both.

These results suggested that intraperitoneal and topical treatment of wild carrot essential oil decreased infiltration and proliferation with an increase of abnormal thickening of the outer layer of the skin.

Further analysis of the wild carrot essential oil anti-cancer effect on human epidermal keratinocytes and the chemopreventive activity of the pentane diethyl ether fraction on DMBA/TPA induced skin carcinogenesis in mice, scientists in the joint study lead by the Lebanese American University suggested that application of all fractions isolated from the essential oil exhibited significant cytotoxicity, with HaCaT cells being 2.4-3 times less sensitive than HaCaT-ras A5 (benign tumorigenic), and HaCaT-ras II4 (malignant) cells observed by western blot.

In Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, 2-himacharlen-6-ol. a derivative isolated from pentane/diethylether fraction (F2), demonstrated strong inhibition of HaCaT-ras A5 and HaCaT-ras II4 cells through cell cycle arrest in the accumulation of cells of the sub-G1 apoptotic phase and apoptosis in decreased the population of cells in the S and G2/M phases.

These results were attributed to the F2 fraction in enhanced expression of pro-apoptotic (Bax) in induction cellular apoptosis and attenuated expression of anti-apoptotic (Bcl2) proteins in promoted cancer proliferation.

Interestingly, all fractions also decreased the phosphorylation of AKT, (AKT is an essential component of the PI3K (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway) in monitor skin cancer cell growth and resistance to apoptosis and ERK(components of mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways) in mediated different anti-proliferative events, such as apoptosis, autophagy and senescence.

Based on the information fonding, Dr. Shebaby WN, the lead author said, " F2 fraction has remarkable antitumor activity against DMBA/TPA-induced skin carcinogenesis, an effect that may be mediated through inhibition of the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT pathways".

The above differentiation was supported by the joint study lead by the University of Surrey in the evaluation of Daucus carota oil extract (DCOE) activity in inhibition of HaCaT-ras II-4 epidermal squamous cells.

According to the experiment, β-2-himachalen-6-ol isolated from the wild carrot essential oil at dose-dependent decreased in skin cell survival with an IC50 and IC90 of 8 and 30 μg/ml, respectively.

Observation of Flow cytometry analysis also revealed that treatment of by β-2-himachalen-6-ol is linearly associated to volume injection, as dose of 10 μg/ml HC significantly increased the number of cells undergoing late apoptosis (28%), while 25 μg/ml caused a larger cell shift towards late apoptosis (46.6%) and necrosis (39%).

Beside decreasing the phosphorylation of AKT, and ERK as shown in the mentioned above, β-2-himachalen-6-ol also inhibited the significant decrease in protein levels of p53 and Bcl-2 in acting as tumors suppressor, caused by 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)/ 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and increased p21 and Bax function in cell cycle arrest and activation of apoptosis.

Astonishingly, the application of essential oil extract of wild carrot inhibited skin cancer proliferation and induced apoptosis withing harming the nearby healthy cells in tested mice.

Taken together, essential oil of carrot and its bioactive derivative may be considered as an adjunct therapy in reduced risk, progression and used a combination with standard medicine for the treatment of skin cancer.

Broccoli Sprout Inhibits Parameters Associated with Sickle Cell Anemia

Anemia is a medical condition associated with a lack of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood.

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common anemia, caused by poor iron levels in the blood, leading to the reduced delivery of oxygen throughout your body.

A long-term deficiency of folate and vitamin B-12 plays a critical role in the production of healthy red blood cells associated with an increased risk of Amenia.

Also, people with the mutated gene inherited from the parent are at substantial risk of the disease. The Duliajan College study suggested that certain genes have been found to induce anemia.

Sickle cell anemia (SCD), a genetic preposition form of anemia is a condition associated with not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body.

The red blood cells in sickle cell anemia patines are rigid and sticky with the shapes of sickles or crescent moons.

The normal red blood cells live for about 120 days compared to the sickle cells that die in 10 to 20 days. In other words, the inability of the body to replace the cell that dies rapidly with new blood cells is a cause of sickle cell anemia.

According to the statistics, provided by the CDC, approximately 100,000 Americans are living with SCD. Ethnically, 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births, 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births and 1 in 13 Black or African-American birth are sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers.

Conventionally, except for bone marrow transplant, treatments of sickle cell anemia are to improve quality of life, by relieving symptoms and preventing complications.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of inherited blood disorder, researchers examined the effects of broccoli sprout homogenate (BSH) containing sulforaphane and sulforaphane in the activation of NRF2 on sickle cell disease (SCD).

Nrf2 is a protein that processes the function in the regulation of the expression of antioxidant enzymes against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

According to the tested analysis, sulforaphane (SFN) significantly increased the expression of NRF2 associated with the increase of antioxidant enzymes that inhibits oxidative stress such as HMOX1, NQO1, and HBG1 in a dose-dependent manner.

In adults with SCD,

* BSH consumption showed no adverse effects.

* BSH consumption increase the mean relative whole blood mRNA levels NRF2 target HMOX1

* Furthermore, BSH injection increased mean relative mRNA levels of the NRF2 target HBG1, compared to the baseline at end of treatment, without affecting the levels of HbF protein.

In other words, BSH displays a similar effect compared to that of sulforaphane in the promotion of the production of antioxidant enzymes against sickle cell disease (SCD).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "BSH, in the provided doses, is safe in stable SCD patients and may induce changes in gene expression levels".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprout processed abundantly SFN may be considered a functional food for the treatment of SCD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Collard Greens (Brassica) Protects the Nerves Against the Risk of Peripheral Neuropathy in Diabetes

Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of patients with diabetes associated with nerve damage, inducing pain and numbness in the legs and feet to conditions associated with the digestive system.

Most cases of diabetic neuropathy in diabetics are involved in a history of hyperglycemia caused by long-term high levels of glucose in the bloodstream, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart due to poor lifestyle.

Peripheral neuropathy is the main type of diabetic neuropathy, affecting the nerves that control the feet and legs first, followed by the hands and arms. Other main types of diabetic neuropathy are
* The autonomic neuropathy that affects the nerves that control the heart, bladder, stomach, intestines, sex organs and eyes.

* Radiculoplexus neuropathy found mostly in older patients affects nerves that control the thighs, hips, buttocks or legs.

* Mononeuropathy, or focal neuropathy also found commonly in older patients affects the nerves that control the face, middle of the body (torso) or leg.

The most common signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are a gradual onset of numbness, prickling or tingling in the feet or hands, over time which can spread upward into your legs and arms.

Some patients with peripheral neuropathy may also experience sharp, jabbing, throbbing or burning pain and skin that extreme sensitivity to touch.

The causes of peripheral neuropathy that damage nerves and blood vessels in the affected area have been found to induce by overtime, uncontrolled high blood sugar.

In other words, peripheral neuropathy is preventable by keeping the blood glucose in the healthy range.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the prevention of diabetes complications-induced loss of limbs' sensation that results in lower limb amputation in patients with diabetes, researchers examined the effects of sulforaphane on peripheral neuropathy in an animal model.

The experiment included diabetes rats induced through single intraperitoneal injections of nicotinamide (50 mg/kg) and streptozotocin (52.5 mg/kg) randomly divided into five groups
* Two groups were treated with saline or sulforaphane

* Three diabetic groups were either untreated or given sulforaphane (1 mg/kg, p.o.) or pregabalin (10 mg/kg, i.p.).

According to the results of tested analysis after 2 weeks, groups treated with sulforaphane restored animals' body weight, reduced levels of blood glucose in the nicotinamide (50 mg/kg) and streptozotocin (52.5 mg/kg) treated group

Furthermore, glycated hemoglobin and increased insulin levels were also normalized by the administration of sulforaphane, compared to the untreated diabetes groups,

Histopathological changes induced by the nicotinamide (50 mg/kg) and streptozotocin were also reversed in the sulforaphane-treated group observed by the normalizing motor coordination and the latency withdrawal time and increasing the latency withdrawal time.

Furthermore, sulforaphane also decreased markers (malondialdehyde) of oxidative stress of sciatic nerve and inhibited the overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of the production of proinflammatory cytokines and cellular damage compared to untreated groups.

Moreover, levels of antioxidant enzymes in the sciatic nerves produced the treatment groups also significant increase by the injection of sulforaphane.

The results strongly suggested that sulforaphane processed a neuroprotective effect against peripheral neuropathy in diabetic rats possibly through modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, and extracellular matrix associated with cellular differentiation remodeling,

Collectively, researchers wrote in the final report, " In NA-STZ model of diabetes mellitus, sulforaphane, restored animals' body weight, reduced blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and increased insulin levels. In parallel, it normalized motor coordination and the latency withdrawal time of the tail-flick test increased the latency withdrawal time of cold allodynia test and ameliorated histopathological changes".

Taken altogether, collard green processed abundantly bioactive compound sulforaphane may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of peripheral neuropathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus), the Potential Anti-Pancreatic Cancer Functional Food

Primary pancreatic cancer is a medical condition originated from the pancreas as a result of the alternation of cells DNA in the pancreas tissue.

Most cases of pancreatic cancer at the early stage begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of pancreas before growing in the size that affects the function of the organ.

At the very early stage of the pancreas, most patients are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, patients may experience the symptoms shared by all cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue and gastrointestinal discomforts accompanied by jaundice, belly and back pain, enlarged liver and gallbladder and blood clot.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US this year, approximately 56,770 people (29,940 men and 26,830 women) will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The disease also will cause the death of 45,750 people (23,800 men and 21,950 women) in the US.

The 5 years survival rate of localized pancreatic cancer is only 34%. The rate is relatively low compared to other types of cancer in the localized stage such as 100% in breast cancer.

The causes of pancreatic cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that aging, gender, ethnicity, family history, smoking, people with certain medical con conditions as diabetes, are the most prevalent risk found in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Michaud DS in the examination of the rate of pancreatic cancer risk arisen in patients with obesity compared to overweight and healthy subjects over past few decades wrote, "Obesity has surfaced as an important risk factor for pancreatic cancer as epidemiological studies with strong methodological designs have removed important biases and solidified the obesity associations".

And, "Moreover, studies indicate that obesity early in adulthood is strongly associated with future risk of pancreatic cancer and that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor".
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, researchers examined the Cucurbitacin B (CuB), a natural tetracyclic triterpene product found abundantly in cucumber antitumor activity.

According to the tested assays, CuB arrested pancreatic cancer (PC) cells in the G2/M cell cycle phase by suppressing the expression of AFAP1-AS1, an RNA gene associated with poor prognosis in cancer patients.

Elevated AFAP1-AS1 expression is found in patients' TSCC tumor tissues and tested cell lines.

Additional differentiation of the CuB effects, researchers found that Cub suppression the tumor proliferation by enhancing high miR-146b-5p expression in pancreatic cancer (PC) cells, an indication of cancer cell suppression.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "CuB suppresses the proliferation, in vitro and in vivo, of PC cells through the... effect of AFAP1-AS1 on miR-146b-5p".

Additionally, according to the results from the Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University,
* CuB inhibited the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in the promotion of solid tumor growth.

* CuB blocked the activation of signaling pathways (PI3K/Akt/mTOR and STAT3.) associated with the cell proliferative stimulation.
* CuB also exhibited cytotoxicity by enhancing t

The protein (ERK-activating AMPK signaling) associated with cellular metabolism and tumor suppression

Taken altogether, cucumber processed abundantly bioactive compound CuB may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Eggplant In Attenuated Risk and Treatment of Melanoma

Eggplant may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and treatment of melanoma, some scientists suggested.

Eggplant is a species of S. melongena with deep purple color, belongings to the family Solanaceae and native to India, cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory.

Melanoma cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the skin. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissues and organs.

According to statistics, approximately 87,110 new cases of invasive melanoma cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017.

The investigated the glycoalkaloids isolated from numerous Solanaceous plants, including eggplant in the risk of melanoma, suggested that eggplant glycoalkaloids derivatives α-solamargine and α-solasonine demonstrated a significant effect in inhibition of cancer cells proliferation, in both vitro and Vivo.

Further analysis of the chemistry and structure-activity also suggested that both α-solamargine and α-solasonine exert a strong antioxidant effect in increased cancer cell apoptosis and decrease tumor formation through the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in cancer cellular processes and NF-kappaB cascades in enhanced T-cell development, maturation, and proliferation, in animal models.

Interestingly, in melanoma cell lines, application of glycoalkaloid solamargine showed a complete
inhibition of the growth of metastatic and primary melanoma cell lines WM239 and WM115 with minimum effect on normal and benign WM35 melanoma cells through reduced blood supplies in induced necrosis by rapid induction of lysosomal membrane permeabilization in controls the passage to allow intracellular or intraorganellar antigens into and out of lysosomes.

Moreover, the action of glycoalkaloid solamargine in exhibition of cancer cell apoptosis was found to attribute to the physiological processes activated by cathepsin B activity in triggering the extrinsic mitochondrial death pathway through releasing cytochrome c, a hemeprotein found loosely in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion and tumor necrosis factor receptor 1(TNFR1) in expression of the transcription factor NF-κB in mediated apoptosis.

In the intrinsic apoptosis pathway, Solamargine disrupted the function of hILP/XIAP in blocking cancer cells apoptosis through an interaction with TRAF protein activated by mediating activation of transcription factors of the NF-κB, thus improving caspase-3 cleavage in the execution phase of cell apoptosis, up regulating Bcl-xL, and Bcl2 in regulated apoptosis, cell cycle arrest and cell cycle entry and suppressing apoptotic peptidase activating factor 1 Apaf-1 and Bax family in expression of both anti- or pro-apoptotic regulation.

Dr. Al Sinani SS, the lead author, after taking into account other confounders said, " Solamargine showed high efficacy in vitro particularly against the vertical growth phase melanoma cells" and "is a promising anti-malignant melanoma drug".

More profoundly, in the researching of chemically isolate and explore an antimelanogenesis inducer in extracts of Solanum melongena L. "Usukawamarunasu" eggplant, the identified dioscin ([25R]-Spirost-5-en-3β-yl) 2-O-(6-deoxy-α-L-mannopyranosyl) - 4-O-(6-deoxy-α-L-mannopyranosyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside] displayed an overwhelming effect in inhibition of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH)-induced melanogenesis in B16 murine melanoma cells.

According to the immunoblot analysis, dioscin prevented B16 murine melanoma cells proliferation was found to attribute to ameliorate the expression of tyrosinase in intracellular production of melanin, tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP-1), and TRP-2 which were significantly correlated to tumor cell stage and grade and metastasis-free survival (DMFS), overall survival.

Additionally, the suppression of tyrosinase, TRP-1, and TRP-2 expression also attenuated
alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in the production of melanogenesis in B16 cells.

Further differentiation also indicated that the identified chemicals also exerted anti-melanoma cells preoperative effect through mediating pro-survival functions microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), through inhibition of Cyclic AMP-responsive element-binding protein (CREB) in express a cassette of regeneration-associated genes with alternated DNA transcription caused by phosphorylation in an expression of α-MSH-induced melanogenesis in B16 cells.

Taking all together, there is no doubt that Eggplant with abundant phytochemicals may have a therapeutic effect on reduced risk and treatment of melanoma. People with a high risk of melanoma are recommended to add some portions of eggplant into their diet for risk prevention.

Beet, in Prevention and Treatment of Colon Cancer

A recent study suggested that people consuming beet regularly have a reduced risk of early onset of colon cancer. and may be considered as a functional food for the treatment of colon cancer.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition characterized by uncontrollable cell growth in colon tissue. depending on the grade, colon cancer cells might spread a distant away from the original tissues to other organs.

Beet, best known as the beetroot or garden beet, belonging to the amaranth family, is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

Dr. Ninfali P, the lead author in the above study showed that betaxanthins and betacyanins isolated from red beetroot exerted considerable antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and antiproliferative activity may have a profound effect in blocking the spread of colon cancer and inducing cell death.

In fact, when used combination with Vitexin-2-O-xyloside, these 3 chemical compounds not only enhanced the conventional anticancer drugs treatment through regulating gene in the expression of cell pro-apoptosis but also reduced the adverse effect of chemotherapy-induced toxicity and overcome the multidrug resistance of cancer cells.

Further to the study of the efficacy of phytochemicals isolated from beetroot against colon cancer, the University of Urbino "Carlo Bo" demonstrated that Vitexin-2-O-xyloside (XVX) and avenanthramides (AVNs)used in the testing of CaCo-2 colon cancer cells, exhibited a strong pro-apoptotic effects and modulation of the pro-survival factor against the tumor, through antioxidant activity.

Another study suggested that the inhibition of colon cancer cell lines of phytochemical isolated from beet, namely betaxanthin (R1) and betacyanin (R2) fractions is a result of cytotoxicity mediated by the intrinsic apoptotic activity as well as increasing cancer cell death through pro apoptotic and anti-inflammatory mediation.

Dr. Farabegoli F, the lead researcher said, "the use of a cocktail of R1, R2, and XVX as a chemopreventive tool against colon cancer".

Taking all together, beet with abundant anti-tumor phytochemicals used alone or combined with conventional medicine may serve as a functional food in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

Dried Peas and Beans In Reduced Risk and Treatment of Colon Cancer

Dietary factors can influence cancers formation and growth, intake of dried peas may have a potential effect in reduced risk of colon cancer, a recent study suggested

Dried pea is a small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, genus Pisum belongings to the family Fabaceae with healthy source of proteins, fibers, vitamins and minerals.

Colon cancer is a condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the tissues of the colon.

In a case-control designed study of 186 men and women with a mean of 58 years of age revealed that consumption of legumes such as dried beans, split peas, or lentils daily and regularly was inversely associated with reduced risk of colon cancer, after adjusting all potential confounding variables.

The relative risk odd ratio of colon cancer occurrence in these subjects was ameliorated substantially compared to control.

Researchers also indicated that risk colon cancer decrease may be attributed to legumes dietary fiber together with enormous presences of phytochemical compounds.

Dr. Agurs-Collins T, the led author said, "Nurses working with African-Americans should encourage consumption of these foods to decrease this risk".

Other, in the study of the same subject, suggested that modifying diet and lifestyle habits, adenomatous polyps and 25-35% of colon adenoma risk could be avoidable. As consumption of legumes at least 3 times/wk reduced the risk of colon cancer by 33% after adjusting for meat intake.

Furthermore, the research result also postulated that a high frequency of consumption of cooked green vegetables, dried fruit, legumes, and brown rice was associated with a decreased risk of colorectal polyps.

Interestingly, in the investigated effect of consumption of standard diets supplemented with freeze-dried vegetables (peas, spinach, sprouts, and broccoli) and carotenoids (all-trans beta-carotene and palm oil carotenoid extract) on surrogate end-point markers for colorectal cancer in an azoxymethane-induced rat model, researchers at the Unilever Research Vlaardingen, illustrated that
peas, spinach, sprouts and a mix of all vegetable diet expressed a significantly reduced number of foci with >2 aberrant crypts/focus by 37, 26, 23 and 26%, particularly in the pea and spinach intervention groups.

After adjusting to other risk factors, researchers filed the following reports
1. Peas, spinach, sprouts and a mix of all vegetable diet was beneficial effects in reduced risk of colorectal carcinogenesis
2. Consumption of several types of vegetables inhibits the early onset of colorectal carcinogenesis
3. and suggest that the vegetable-induced effect is more pronounced in advanced lesions.

Taking all together, dried peas may be used as therapeutic ingredients in reduced risk and treatment of colon cancer and diseases related to colon abnormalities.

Lentil (Other Sources) Lectins as Biomarkers and Treatment of Kidney Cancer

Lentil, a type of pulse and tiny legume that can be cooked quickly and rich in protein and fiber is a bushy annual plant of genus Lens to the Fabaceae family, native to the Middle East.

Lentils' (plant sources') lectin may be considered as biomarkers for detection of the stage of varies types of cancer and treatment of renal cancer, some scientists suggested.

Renal or kidney cancer is a serious medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the tissues of the kidney. At the late stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other tissues and organs.

According to the investigation of plant lectin effect in the risk of cancers, by resisting digestion, lectins after intake maintained full biological activity in binding to the cancer cell remembrances or. and receptors to induce cytotoxicity, thus reducing cancer cell proliferation and inhibiting tumor growth.

Further analysis also indicated that lectins can also incorporate into cancer cells as an antigen to cause agglutination and/or aggregation in the induction of cytolysis and inhibited expression of polyamines, small organic cations that are essential for cancer cells to grow.

Moreover, plant lectin altered the production of various interleukins that are essential importance for the function of both innate and adaptive immunity by activated certain protein kinases in regulating signal transduction pathways which are important for both innate and adaptive immunity in control tumor progression.

Additionally, lectins can also bind to cancer cell mutated ribosomes, a cell structure that makes protein and inhibits protein synthesis, thus disrupting the critical cellular processes necessary for sustained cancer cell growth and modified the cancer cell phase 1 division and exhibited G2/M phase cell cycle arrest.

Interestingly, the injection of lectins also inhibited telomerase expression in cancer cell activity in maintaining tumor progression and angiogenesis in stimulated production of the new blood vessels to provide nutrients and oxygen to cancer cells proliferation and tumor expansion.

In clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), Galectin-9 (Gal-9), an animal lectin injection exerted a significant effect in inhibited cancer cell proliferation through binding to β-galactoside which is important to provide energy to tumor survival.

Further investigation of the expression of Gal-9 in a total of in 196 patients with ccRCC who underwent nephrectomy, with 48/196 patients died and 61/196 patients suffered recurrence to assess the prognostic value of Gal-9, suggested that Gal-9 expression not only associates positively with tumor size but also induces a direct impact in the relative survival ratio, used to predict overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) of patients.

Indeed, high levels of Gal-9 was found to associate correlated to poor survival and early recurrence and the expression of lectin also can be considered as a biomarker in diagnosed clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) in early-stage and lower of grade of tumor, node, and metastasis in patients who are at higher risk of the kidney cancer developing.

The findings suggested that lectins from all sources may be considered as therapeutic substances and biomarkers for treatment and monitoring the progression of kidney cancer which can be helpful in making medical decisions in prescribing chemo-drugs.

Broccoli Sprout Protects Diabetics Against Diabetic Cardiomyopathy

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by the failure of the body to utilize the insulin in converting glucose to energy, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

Most cases of diabetes are associated with either beta cells of the pancreas died-off or insulin receptor site clogged-up by fat and cholesterol.

Diabetic complications in most cases are caused by long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes.

Most common complication of diabetes is associated with the damage of tiny blood vessels that nourish the related organ and tissues, leading to the risk for developing microvascular and macrovascular complications. includes cardiovascular disease.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a complication of the heart muscle in people with diabetes, leading to heart failure that causes the reduced function of the heart to circulate blood through the body.
The most common symptoms of diabetic cardiomyopathy are the accumulation of fluid in the lungs or legs.

Dr. Adeghate E, in the examination of the diabetic cardiomyopathy associated with the structural changes in the myocardium of diabetes, wrote, " If left unmanaged, DM can lead to numerous long-term complications including micro- and macro-angiopathy and heart failure (HF)".

And, "Most diabetics usually die as a result of HF resulting from diabetes-induced coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathy. Coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathy are normally preceded by hyperglycemia (HG)".

In other words, management diabetes by preventing the onset of hyperglycemia is the most effective way to reduce the risk of diabetic cardiomyopathy in diabetes.

More precisely, by following a healthy diet to normalize the levels of HbA1c level, accompanied by moderate exercise, the risk of diabetic complications can be manageable.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. It has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy, researchers examined the effect of broccoli sprout extract in an animal model.

The study included male db/db and age-matched wild-type (WT) mice given sulforaphane (SFN, an Nrf2 activator) and its natural source, broccoli sprout extract (BSE) by gavage every other day for 3 months, including vehicle (0.1 ml/10 g), BSE-low dose (estimated SFN availability at 0.5 mg/kg), BSE-high dose (estimated SFN availability at 1.0 mg/kg), and SFN (0.5 mg/kg).

According to the results of echocardiography and histopathological analysis, both BSE and SFN showed significant prevention of diabetes-induced cardiac dysfunction, hypertrophy, and fibrosis.

Furthermore, BSE, like SFN, significantly exhibited the Nrf2 transcriptional activity associated with protective effect oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

In other words, stimulating Nrf2 function of the protein, BSE, and SFN significantly prevented cardiac oxidative damage and inflammation.

Moreover, BSE at high dose exerted a similar effect as those of SFN. particularly, in BSE at a high dose that works synergistically with SFN to prevent DCM.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "BSE could potentially be used as a natural and safe treatment against DCM via Nrf2 activation".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprout processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous Vegetables, the Best Natural Whole Food Medicine for Reduced risk and Treatment of Cancers

Intake of Cruciferous Vegetables may reduce the risk of cancers.
According to the recent study, Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a substance present in cruciferous vegetables suppressed the proliferation of different tumor cells, including those isolated from breast, prostate, endometrium, and colon cancers, in vitro.

Dr. Popolo A, the lead author suggested, the effect of the chemical compound in the treatment of various cancers may attribute to the interference of cancer cell cycle division and expression of a diverse set of genes involved cell differentiation.

Cruciferous vegetables are the group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli, etc.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, have become progressively worse and damaged other healthy tissues, sometimes spreads to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.

Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), according to Dr. Aggarwal BB and Dr. Ichikawa H., also inhibited DNA-carcinogen abducted formation, and suppressed free-radical production, stimulated 2-hydroxylation of estradiol in reduced cell proliferative and estrogenic activity and formation of blood vessels involved cancer cell survival.

Furthermore, indole-3-carbinol and its derivatives in the other studies not only expressed the anti-cancer effects through gene formation but also inhibited free radicals production, ... but also interfered with the cancer cell cycle division phase to induce apoptosis.

Other chemical compounds found in cruciferous vegetables, showed to possess potent antitumor and chemopreventive activity including sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate and Allyl nitrile (3-butenenitrile).

Taking together, there is no doubt, cruciferous vegetables have exhibited anti-cancer activities, through many aspects. Intake of cruciferous vegetables regularly is associated with reduced risk and treatment of various types of cancer.

Red Chinese Cabbage Inhibits Vascular Inflammatory Diseases in Vivo

Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.

During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off harmful microorganisms.

However, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain to the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation that affects tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off the foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involved immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air, the increase in age, being obesity or obesity, low sex hormone production, sleep disorder and diet.

Furthermore, vascular inflammation increased the risk of CVD are found to have a close link between inflammation and redox balance or oxidative stress caused the imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host.

Dr. Steven S, the lead scientist said, "Clinical trials have identified chronic inflammatory disorders as cardiovascular risks, and recent research has revealed a contribution by various inflammatory cells to vascular oxidative stress. Atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease are closely associated with inflammation, probably due to the close interaction of inflammation with oxidative stress".

And, "The value of immunomodulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease was recently supported by large-scale clinical trials demonstrating reduced cardiovascular mortality in patients with the established atherosclerotic disease when treated by highly specific anti-inflammatory therapies (e.g., using monoclonal antibodies against cytokines)".

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belonging to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention against disease associated with vascular inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich extract from red Chinese cabbage (ArCC).

According to the analysis of cultured endothelial cells, ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α-in atherosclerotic plaque formation by inhibiting endothelial adhesion molecules.

The action of ArCC against vascular inflammation was attributed by decreasing the expression of a protein associated with cytokine production.

In hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) showed a similar effect on the inhibition of aortic inflammatory cytokines, reduction of plaque formation accompanied by the lowering the leukocyte infiltration.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The results suggest that the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases".

Taken altogether, red Chinese cabbage processed abundantly anthocyanin may be considered a dietary vegetable for the prevention and treatment of vascular inflammatory diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of anthocyanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Broccoli Sprouts Protect the Brain Cells Against Neuro-degenerative Disease

Age-related neurological disorders or neurodegenerative diseases are the conditions associated with the progressive death of neurons due to aging, leading to the problems with movement (called ataxias), or mental functioning including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia.

Dementia is a general term of neurodegenerative disease that causes a decline in memory and thinking skills that are severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities and quality of life.

About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some forms of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age.

Most common types of dementia are Alzheimer's disease, the condition that destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking, and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

Over 1 million people in the US alone are currently afflicted by Alzheimer's disease because of the degeneration of the hippocampus and cerebral cortex(3) of the brain where memory, language, and cognition are located.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a disabling, progressive condition that causes cognitive deficit due to the interruption of frontal-subcortical loops that facilitate cognition and parallel the motor loop, and the loss of substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) dopamine (DA) neurons.

Besides aging, geographical, hereditary and viral and toxicological exposure may also correlate to the development of the diseases on the elderly.

Dr. Hung CW in the examination of the neurodegenerative disease in the aging population wrote, "Ageing, which all creatures must encounter, is a challenge to every living organism. In the human body, it is estimated that cell division and metabolism occur exuberantly until about 25 years of age. Beyond this age, subsidiary products of metabolism and cell damage accumulate, and the phenotypes of aging appear, causing disease formation".
And, "Among these age-related diseases, neurodegenerative diseases have drawn a lot of attention due to their irreversibility, lack of effective treatment, and accompanied social and economical burdens".

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disease, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane, an active compound produced after conversion of glucoraphanin by the myrosinase enzyme in broccoli (Brassica oleracea var) sprouts inflammatory conditions in aged models involving microglial activation.

According to the results of pretreatment of pulsed electric fields that trigger the biological role of normal broccoli against lipopolysaccharide-activated microglia, sulforaphane-enriched broccoli sprouts showed an excellent potency against neuroinflammation conditions, particularly in both 6 and 24 h of microglial activation.

Sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts also inhibited an inflammatory cascade by decreasing the function of proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, proteins associated with the production of antioxidant enzymes and inhibition of oxidative stress (Nrf2 and HO-1) were also increased by SFN followed by the lowered neuronal apoptosis induced by activated microglia.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " sulforaphane-enriched broccoli sprouts improved the scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice through Nrf2 activation, inhibiting neuronal apoptosis particularly through inhibition of caspase-3 activation which could lead to the neuroprotection against neurodegenerative disorders".

In other words, SFN protected the integrity of the neurons against neuron damage through it's anti-neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective activities.

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention of neurodegenerative disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous Vegetable, the Best Detoxified Natural Whole Food

Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), a natural product formed from gluconasturtiin in certain cruciferous vegetables may be the next generation of detoxified natural food against benzene, acrolein, and crotonaldehyde in cigarette smokers.

According to the University of Pittsburgh, the phytpchemical phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) reduced the level of benzene by 24.6% (P = 0.002), and acrolein by 15.1%, but had no effect on crotonaldehyde, in the study of 82 cigarette smokers.

Detoxification is the process of removing toxic or harmful substances from our body.

Cruciferous vegetables are the group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok-choy, broccoli etc.

A randomized phase II clinical trial with a crossover design conducted to evaluate the effect of 2-phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), against toxin in cigarette smokers, suggested that 2-Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) treated mice showed reduced metabolic activation of NNK by 7.7%.
NNK is a tobacco carcinogen, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone found to induce lung cancer.

In support of the detoxified effect of cruciferous vegetables against body toxins, isothiocyanates from cruciferous vegetables showed to promoted Nrf2, a protein in regulated the expression of antioxidant proteins in protected cells against oxidative damage, induced production of cytoprotection by detoxification mechanisms, and excretion of both harmful substances and toxic metals.

Furthermore, in Hepa1c1c7 murine hepatoma cells study of the induction of detoxification enzymes by benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) and its synthetic N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) conjugate (NAC-BITC), Dr. Hwang ES said, "BITC and NAC-BITC inhibited Hepa1c1c7 cell growth in a dose-dependent manner. Cell growth was 4.5~57.2% lower in Hepa1c1c7 cells treated with 0.1~10 μM BITC than in control-treated Hepa1c1c7 cells."

Taking together, there is no doubt that cruciferous vegetables having a strong effect in reduced the accumulation of toxic chemicals in the body, particularly in cigarette smokers. But further larger sample size and multiple studies are necessary to confirm its viability.

Kidney bean, the Best Anti-cancer Healthy Whole Food

Kidney bean may have potential effects against irregular cell growth in the body, causing various types of cancer, a recent study proposed.

Kidney bean is popular food, with kidney shape, strong flavor and color in reddish-brown in nature used often as an excellent dietary selection because of enormous health benefits with a good source of protein and minerals.

Cancer, a group of diseases characterized by cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable in our body. At the late stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to invade other tissues and organs.

According to the joint study led by the Shenzhen University, chemical compound 60-kDa glucosamine binding lectin, white kidney bean lectin (WKBL), showed efficacy in inhibited HepG2 activity in compared to MCF7 cells through induced anti-proliferative and anti-apoptotic activities.

The study also found that epithelial tumor cell lines ( HONE-1) also are inhibited by chemical compound lectin in the activation of various extrinsic apoptosis pathway involved cell death.

Dr. Chan YS, the lead author said, " The (anti-proliferative) activity could be reduced by the addition of glucosamine, which occupies the binding sites of WKBL, indicating that carbohydrate-binding is crucial for the activity".

Beside chemical compound 60-kDa glucosamine binding lectin, 64-kDa glucosamine-specific lectin isolated from brown kidney bean also exhibited antiproliferative activity against numbers of cell lines including human breast cancer (MCF7) cells, hepatoma (HepG2) cells and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (CNE1 and CNE2) cells with concentration of an inhibitor of 5.12 µM, 32.85 µM, 3.12 µM and 40.12 µM respectively after treatment for 24 hours.

Particularly in breast cancer cell line MCF7, the formation of apoptotic bodies of the tumors is associated to apoptosis involved estrogen receptor(ER) stress and directed protein response.

Taking together, Kidney bean processed anti-cancer effects by exhibited anti-proliferative and anti-apoptotic activities against the early stage of development and progression of cancer in the various pathways. Please note that raw kidney beans are toxic.

Celery, the Functional Vegetable for the Prevention and Treatment of Lung cancer

Scientists may have found a veggie with the potential for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, some studies suggested.

Lung cancer is a chronic and medical condition that caused irregular cell growth in the lung tissue due to DNA alternation.

Most cases of primary lung cancer start from the alternated cell on the surface of the inner ling of the lung.

At the later stage, after colonizing most parts of the lung, the cancerous cell can travel a distance away from the lung to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

At the early of lung cancer, patients may not have any symptoms. however, as the tumor grows larger, it can suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, leading localized pain and discomforts.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of lung cancer. Long-term cigarette smoking is one of the major risk factors associated with the substantial risk of the disease, according to epidemiological studies.

Other risk factors including long-term exposure to secondhand smoke and radiation have also increased the risk of lung cancer onset.

Dr. Beate Pesch, the lead scientist in the study "Cigarette smoking and lung cancer,..."Current male smokers with an average daily dose of >30 cigarettes had ORs of 103.5 for SqCC, 111.3 for SCLC, and for AdCa. In women, the corresponding ORs were 62.7, 108.6 and 16.8, respectively".

The risk of lung cancer increased proportionally to the increase of numbers of cigarettes daily depending on the types of lung cancer.

Male smokers are at a higher risk of lung cancer, compare to female smokers.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

In the concerns of the widespread of lung cancer in rural China, researchers at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, launched a study to evaluate the relationship between dietary intake of vegetables and fruit and lung cancer risk in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, northeast China.

The case-control study, conducted from 1987 to 1990, among 218 cases with the incident, histologically confirmed lung cancer and 436 controls admitted to the same hospitals as cases with non-neoplastic, non-lung diseases unrelated to smoking and other potential risk factors for lung cancer.

After taking a closed differentiation of the returned questionnaire, high intake of celery was found to be the most outstanding vegetable in lowering the cancer incidence compared to the high intake of Chinese cabbage, chives, and carrots.

Sadly, the OR was more than six-fold elevated for smokers reporting low intake of vegetables and more than four-fold elevated for smokers reporting low intake of fruit, as compared with never smokers reporting high intake of these items.

Furthermore, in the reaffirmation of vegetable intake in reducing the risk of lung cancer in the Tin Corporation (YTC) miners in Yunnan, researchers once against suggested that high intake of celery is associated with the lower risk of lung cancer.

However, the reducing risk of lung cancer also is dependent on the type of vegetable intake and the total volume of vegetable intake daily.

Taken all together, celery may be considered a functional vegetable in reducing the risk of lung cancer and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of lung cancer without inducing any adverse effects.

Black Bean In Reducing the Risk of CVD and Diabetes in Metabolic Syndrome Adults

Intake of black bean and other common beans may associate to the ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome induced type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, a joint study of renowned institutes suggested.

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.

In a pilot study consisted 12 men and women with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to eat three standard meals in a crossover design on three different occasions that contained either no added fiber (control (NF)), extrinsic or added fiber (AF), or whole black beans as the source of intrinsic fiber (BN). 5 hours after meal intake, the black bean injection group showed a remarkable improvement of blood glucose, insulin, cholecystokinin (CCK) and the GI hormones in compared to other groups.

Unfortunately, even with such results, the black bean meal was not the meal of choice of a tested adult compared to NF meal which tended to result in more satisfaction.

Dr. Reverri EJ, the lead author said, "incorporating whole black beans into a meal has acute beneficial metabolic and GI hormone responses in adults with metabolic syndrome and are preferred over adding equivalent amounts of fiber from a supplement."

Other, in the study of 12 adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS) consumed one of three meals (black bean (BB), fiber matched (FM), and antioxidant capacity matched (AM)) on three occasions with included blood collection before (fasting) and five hours postprandially, black beam intake group showed an improvement of insulin resistance, antioxidant capacity, oxLDL and inhibited pro-inflammatory expression against risk factor of metabolic syndrome in increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The study also suggested a black bean group according to observed plasma antioxidant capacity may be less at the beginning in compared to AM group, but at the endpoint, BB group showed a significant antioxidant level compared to the other 2 groups.

The findings suggested that black bean may be considered as a therapeutic functional food in reduced risk of metabolic syndrome which is an early indicator of the onset of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Navy Bean Promotes Gut Digestibility

Digestibility is a process that a percentage of foods absorbed by the body after intake by an individual.

On the other hand, digestion is the process that breaks down broken down into nutrients through both mechanical and chemical digestion.

The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract and organs of digestion, including the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder.

The digestive system plays a critical role in maintaining the proper function of the body involved in the breakdown of food into smaller and smaller components before being absorbed and assimilated into the body.

The digestive disorder is medical conditions that affect the function of the digestive tract, including heartburn/GERD, IBD, and IBS that orchestrate symptoms of bloating, diarrhea, gas, stomach pain, and stomach cramps.

Although there are many prevalent factors that cause the onset of digestive disorder, some researchers suggested that the imbalanced gut microbiota may be one of the major culprits that elevate the risk of the disease.

Dr. Caitriona M. Guinane, the lead scientist wrote, "The human gut microbiota has become the subject of extensive research in recent years and our knowledge of the resident species and their potential functional capacity is rapidly growing".

And, "the resident microbiota influence host metabolism, physiology, and immune system development while perturbation of the microbial community can result in chronic GI disease.".

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.

On finding potential health food which enhances the digestive function, researchers examined the total tract digestibility and safety of cooked navy bean powder when incorporated into a canine diet formulation at 25% (wt/wt).
The randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled for a 28-d dietary intervention study included 21 healthy, free-living, male and female adult dogs of different breeds.

In the comparison of the apparent total tract energy and nutrient digestibility of the navy bean powder diet with the control diet, researchers found that
* Digestibilities and metabolizable energy (ME) content were 68.58 and 68.89% dry matter (DM), 78.22 and 79.49% crude protein (CP), 77.57 and 74.91% organic matter (OM), 94.49 and 93.85% acid-hydrolyzed fat, and 3,313 and 3,195 kcal ME/kg for the navy bean diet and control diet, respectively.)

* There are no differences observed between the groups, particularly in those of flatulence or major change in fecal consistency.

* Navy bean powder at 25% (wt/wt) of total diet was found to be palatable and digestible in tested animals.

Based on the finding and after taking other factors such as complete blood counts, blood biochemical profiles into the account, researchers wrote, "cooked navy bean powder can be safely included as a major food ingredient in canine diet formulations and provide a novel quality protein source,....for chronic disease control and prevention".

Taken altogether, the cooked navy bean processes total tract digestibility that can be used for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beet, Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular Disease by Balancing Endothelial Function

Beetroot with rich in inorganic nitrate may be used as dietary supplementation or functional food to improve endothelial function via reduced expression of harmful free radicals, a respectable institute study illustrated.

The endothelium is a thin membrane lined the inside of the heart and blood vessels with function in control vascular relaxation and contraction, as well as enzymes that control blood clotting, immune function and platelet adhesion.

Endothelial dysfunction, due to the inability of the arteries to dilate fully, may exhibit high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol.... in promoting stroke and heart attacks.

Beet, best known as the beetroot or garden beet, belonging to the amaranth family, is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

In a total of 20 healthy overweight and slightly obese men with a BMI between 28 and 35 kg/m(2) received in random order a mixed meal of 56.6 g of fat with beetroot juice or a control drink, oral administration of beetroot juice (140 mL) with approximately 500 mg dietary nitrate group, showed a significant improvement of postprandial endothelial function in compared control.

The efficacy of beet juice in attenuated postprandial impairment of flow-mediated dilation (FMD) following a mixed meal, probably due to the expression of increased plasma NO concentrations in the blood stream, according to the Maastricht University Medical Center.

Furthermore, beet roots with biological activity provided a natural source of nitric oxide (NO) in reduced risk of endothelium dysfunction inducing the imbalance between vasodilation and vasoconstriction of arterial vessels.

The study also suggested that phytochemical betalain isolated from beetroot may also hold a significant effect in maintain healthy endothelium function, acting simultaneously with increasing levels of nitric oxide (NO).

More importantly, the review database of literature fromMEDLINE, EMBASE and Scopus databases from inception until November 2014, 9 crossover trials and three parallel trials met inctlusion criteria, included a total of 246 participants with 10-64 participants per study, also indicated the efficacy of inorganic nitrate and beetroot consumption in reduced risk of cardiovascular disease by improved vascular function. But the effect on endothelial function was significantly associated with the dose depended of inorganic nitrate, found abundantly in the vegetable

The finding evidences indicated that beetroot may be considered as a promising therapeutic treatment in ameliorated risk of cardiovascular disease through improvement of vascular and endothelial functions.
