Asparagus, the Anti Inflammatory Natural Whole Food

Asparagus is a flowering plant belongs to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia, used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

Asparagus may be the next potential whole food medicine in the inhibited expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in inducing fever, pain and swelling in affect location,...

Inflammation is a natural expression by the immune system in the induction of while blood cells for protection our body against infection with foreign invasion.

According to the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine, in an investigation of chronic skin inflammation, using 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced mouse ear edema, administration at 200mg/kg (i.p.) of ethanolic extract from Asparagus cochinchinensis Merrill (ACE)expressed strong anti-inflammatory effect through inhibited topical edema in the mouse ear, and substantial reductions in skin thickness and tissue weight, inflammatory cytokine production,.....

Dr. Lee DY, the lead author in the study said, "ACE is an effective anti-inflammatory agent in murine phorbol ester-induced dermatitis" and " the compound may have therapeutic potential in a variety of immune-related cutaneous diseases."

The study of pharmacological properties of Asparagus racemosus root extracts (AR), also addressed the potential used of extract formulation for topical and/or transdermal drug to provide anti-inflammatory activity, due to its significant attenuation involved in systemic inflammation, without causing toxicity to experiment monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1.

Furthermore, the extract from asparagus also exerts an inhibitory effect on pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely interleukin 1β and tumor necrosis factor α, and on the production of nitric oxide in free radical-mediated lipid oxidation stimulated by lipopolysaccharide in regulated immune response in vitro.

Some researchers insisted the properties of anti-inflammation of asparagus may also due to the presence of phytochemical saponin contents in comparison to the group treated with crude saponin extracts in the rat paw-edema and the control group.

Taking all together, Asparagus may have a potential anti-inflammatory effect in reduced risk and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases. The efficacy is not due to a single ingredient in the food but the whole food.
