Beet, the Best functional Food in Exhibited Hepatoprotective Effects

Beet may be considered as a functional food to protect the liver against any forming of liver disorders a renowned institute proposed.

Liver diseases are class of disease characterized by the disordered function of the liver, including cirrhosis, hepatitis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, nonalcoholic liver disease, non-infectious liver diseases, benign liver tumor, liver cancer,......

Beet, best known as beetroot or garden beet, belonging to the amaranth family, is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

According to Dr. Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Beta vulgaris Linn. (BV, Chenopodiaceae) leaves extract showed a significant effect in protecting the liver against hepatoxicity, measured by levels of serum markers enzymes together with antioxidants.

In vitro studies, n-butanol fraction of BV leaves (BVBF) isolated from beet, at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg exhibited liver protective action against ethanol-induced hepatic toxicity by the restoration of biochemical changes in liver tissues.

Furthermore, in carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver toxicity injured rats, oral administrated ethanolic extract of Beta vulgaris roots exerted a profound hepatoprotective activity at doses of 1000, 2000 and 4000 mg/kg.

Moreover, in the finding of new phytochemicals isolated from beetroot, researchers found that vitexin 7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), and vitexin 2''-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, the new compounds also exhibited hepatoprotective effect at rates of 65.8 and 56.1%, respectively in rat induced liver toxicity model.

More importantly, others' newly differentiated flavonoids, 2",2"'-di-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl-vicenin II, a di-C-glycosyl flavone, and herbacetin 3-O-β-xylopyranosyl- (1"' --> 2")-O-β-glucopyranoside extracted from leaves of beet, once again demonstrated hepatoprotective effects in the intoxicated rat by the administration of acetaminophen.

Additionally, the newly acquired compounds of above also demonstrated hypolipidemic activity in reduced risk of liver diseases in rats with a high-fat diet.

Taking together, beet is a potent functional food with plenty of liver-protective phytochemicals used for the prevention and treatment of liver disease.
