Yoga, an ancient technique may have a therapeutic effect on blood glucose parameters in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, a recent and renowned institute study suggested.
Diabetes is a medical condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose, caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.
Yoga, the ancient technique practiced for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
According to the joint study lead by the Yoga and Naturopathy Government Hospital, yoga participants showed an improvement on the blood glucose parameters in diabetes, through motivated 'lifestyle modification practices' including maximizing adherence to yoga should be the focus to experience any beneficial effects of yoga.
In a single group longitudinal study over 6 months conducted at VASK yoga center, Bangalore., researchers after taking account of other confounders suggested that patients with type 2 diabetes attending the yoga class over 6 months, showed a decreased fasting blood glucose through reduced stress.
Furthermore, the study qualitative data also revealed that most of the participants joined and expressed to complete the yoga program which they believe can help cure their diabetes. Drope out of the participants is low with most reasons related to travel, ill-health and increased work-load at the office.
Interestingly and importantly, in the parallel, randomized controlled pilot study, 8-week yoga participants showed a decreased risk of diabetes through induced weight loss and reduced waist circumference and improved quality of life and potentially increasing psychological well-being in compared to a walking control.
Also in compared to the walking group, there is no significant difference in improvement in fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose, insulin resistance or any other factors related to diabetes risk.
The efficacy of yoga in reduced risk and management of diabetes complications may be attributed the ameliorated systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, anxiety, depression, negative affect, and perceived stress.
Other in an open-label parallel three-armed randomized control trial conducted among 124 recruited women with Diabetes for three months, the yoga group showed a trend in decline of fasting plasma glucose and of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) with a significant decrease of diastolic blood pressure and hip circumference with 90% of women attended classes regularly.
Taking together, yoga participant with type 2 diabetes showed significantly in decreased blood glucose, through many mechanisms, including weight loss, lower blood cholesterol, improved physical and psychological aspects,..... People should ask instructors for a class tailored to their needs.
